Can the Mad Max prequel Furiosa hold up to George Miller's beloved 2015 Fury Road? The answer is a surprising and delightful yes. Longer, richer in character, and twice as dark in its storytelling, this origin story starring Anya Taylor-Joy is operatic, epic, and hilariously insane in its scenes. It's a revenge story as classic in its plot as True Grit or Kill Bill, and Taylor-Joy keeps the film's rage and bloodlust in her petite frame and stony face. Like Charlize Theron in Fury Road, the heroine barely speaks, but her performance is a marvel of grace and physicality. Furiosa is populated by muscle-bound thugs who can deadlift 12 Furiosas, but Taylor-Joy beats the crap out of them all. TA

A surreal tale of two suburban teens obsessed with a cult 1990s TV show, I Saw The TV Glow is strange, yearning, and deeply nostalgic: a vivid tale of youthful alienation filled with terrifyingly beautiful and sometimes deeply disturbing imagery. It's 1996, and seventh-grader Owen lives his life in a state of painful isolation usually in the glow of the family TV. When he notices a ninth-grader named Maddy reading the paperback episode guide to a TV show called The Pink Opaque, something inside him cracks a little. Maddy invites Owen over to her house to watch an
episode together, and an obsession develops, as does a strange bond between the two. As the film moves through the decades, it builds and impacts your anxiety, and the final scene, with an adult Owen beset by frustration and a bottled-up sense of self, is terrifying and explosive. TA

In Richard Linklater's winning action comedy, Glen Powell plays a goofy, tight-pants-wearing Houston undercover cop posing as a suave, sexy assassin. Things start to go awry when he sparks a romance with a woman he's hired to kill (Adria Arjona). Even more unbelievable than Powell being a nerd? The entire story is actually based on true events. It's so funny, you won't be able to stop smiling. One much-discussed scene had audiences clapping mid-movie avoid spoilers at all costs. LWM
