A small group travel company for women specializing in itineraries that offer transformative experiences that support female entrepreneurs, Wild Terrains has just launched its first domestic trip, a four-day/three-night girls’ trip to NOLA. “It was important to me to design an experience that not only celebrated the rich culture of Louisiana, but also connected travelers to the women who are the backbone of this complex and vibrant city, and what better way to do that than through food,” says Wild Terrains founder Lauren Bates, whose family hails from Louisiana. The itinerary is packed with exclusive experiences, such as an evening cruise through the waterways of Louisiana’s fragile coast on a small fishing boat headed to a swamp dinner. If getting a reservation at the Mosquito Supper Club is difficult, imagine sitting down to a soulful private dinner prepared by Melissa and inspired by her mother’s recipes; shrimp and okra gumbo, crispy soft-shell crab and raspberry dumplings. The evening embodied what it means to share a meal in South Louisiana: talk about life on the swamp, the fragile ecosystem, rich Cajun cuisine and the close-knit communities that thrive here.

Former professional dancer turned pastry chef Kaitlin Guerin describes her journey to opening her bakery as a true homecoming. After honing her craft in top kitchens across the U.S. and abroad, she returned to New Orleans to launch her pop-up pastry shop just before the pandemic hit. Reflecting on her path, Kaitlin shares, “As Edna Lewis said, ‘All roads to self-discovery lead home.’” Her creations offer elegant tributes to the African diaspora and Southern cuisine, showcasing local ingredients through a seasonal lens. “I think of pastry as a form of storytelling,” she says. Kaitlin’s newly opened brick-and-mortar shop in Central City features her signature sweet and savory creations made with seasonal, local ingredients and a top-notch coffee program. From croissants filled with locally made sausage from Vau Cresson, a fourthgeneration Creole sausage maker, to cornbread drizzled with honey butter, the emphasis is on sustainability and local sourcing. “Every ingredient tells a story. From the flour milled by the women at Carolina Ground to the honey drizzled on our cornbread it’s all about connection,” she says. Be sure to try the pain au chocolat, which features a delicious, fruity Tanzanian chocolate bar from Piety and Desire.

Mosquito Supper Club, the restaurant she opened in 2014 in a double-hung, wood-frame house tucked away in Uptown, reflects this philosophy. The menu features staples from Melissa’s childhood in Chauvin, Louisiana, like soft-shell shrimp, jambalaya, seafood gumbo, and classic

oyster chowder, along with upscale options like oysters with caviar and shrimp and watermelon salad. Fall is especially magical here, as the restaurant’s menu changes seasonally, featuring heartier dishes as the temperatures cool. Despite the menu’s evolution, 99 percent of the ingredients remain local, honoring the generosity of the shrimpers, oystermen, crabbers, and farmers who shape South Louisiana cuisine.
