“He’s a good boy, so he likes to be in the studio when I’m working,” Eilish adds. “He’s really good with loud noises and overstimulation, he doesn’t care.” Indeed, at a listening party for Eilish’s latest album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, Shark even took the stage in front of thousands of fans at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, dancing across the smoky arena floor to album-closing track “Blue” to a roar from the crowd. “I’ve been making music with him in the room his whole life, so that’s all he knows it’s really sweet.”
Clearly, Shark's moment to shine has been a long time coming, which is why Eilish jumped at the chance to have him on the cover of Vogue. (Dogue, at least.) During a shoot at her regular recording studio, Eilish and photographer Tracy Nguyen took inspiration from both Shark's listening party setting and the dark blues of Hype Williams' 1999 classic Belly, starring Nas and DMX. And it turns out that while Shark may be a softie at heart, he knows how to give it his all in front of the camera. "I wish I could take him everywhere with me," Eilish said after the shoot, with a sigh. "I wish I could take him on my whole world tour."
That's not to say Shark's contributions to Eilish and O'Connell's songwriting process have always been melodic. "He likes to snore really loudly and fart during our recording sessions," Eilish admits, laughing. But because Shark was adopted at five weeks old, "he knows nothing but my life," she explains meaning he's a remarkably comfortable companion while she and O'Connell are recording, either napping at their feet while they sit at the computer finishing a new track, or staring at Eilish as she records her vocal tracks.
