I hope this message finds everyone safe and healthy. This will be a historic year for the world, the City of Helena and for Parks and Recreation. The global pandemic has compelled us to hold tight to our communities. The City of Helena Parks and Recreation Department is working tirelessly to provide safe public spaces and recreation opportunities while addressing the ever-changing situation of COVID-19. Our focus as a City throughout this pandemic is providing essential city services, limiting community spread and supporting citizens and employees. Parks, open lands and our shared recreation places have proved essential throughout spring and summer. They’ll be critical this fall and winter as we continue to see a surge of use. Parks employees have been thoughtful, creative, resilient and adaptable. Our parks, playgrounds, recreation programs, open lands, golf course, pool, Civic Center, and city trees are all incredibly valuable and continue to provide much needed resources to the community of Helena. Parks employees are dedicated to safety and are putting COVID plans together, working with public health, and implementing the detailed operations required of a regular day, or an event or program, all with a high level of professionalism and care. They stay home when sick - or when roommates or loved ones are sick or exposed to COVID - wear masks and ask others to wear masks; stagger shifts and start times; clean and sanitize, a lot; social distance; modify hours, operations and schedules; and other countless things to keep you and them safe and healthy and our parks open. The Civic Center and the golf course, while temporarily closed this spring, have been open and providing recreation opportunities and important venues for gathering where social distancing can be achieved. The Helena Civic Center is a community venue for small events, meetings, important gatherings and has large capacity so all events prioritize public health with plenty of social distancing. Muni’s Restaurant at Bill Roberts Golf Course is thriving and offering a new menu and outdoor seating well into the winter months. We are fortunate that the City of Helena has invested in, and supports, outdoor recreation. May our parks and open lands provide a welcome place in the months ahead to breathe fresh air, enjoy the sun, or hike with your kids and dogs. Stay safe, stay well, and stay healthy, Kristi Ponozzo - City of Helena Parks, Recreation & Open Lands Director

Sasquatch Hunt A nine-foot-tall Sasquatch has been spotted on open lands. From 09/11/2020 through 11/20/2020 Sasquatch will be moving through Helena’s trails for an eleven week long, city wide scavenger hunt.
Who knows where Sasquatch will be every week? No one knows for sure, but the Helena Parks and Recreation team is out on the trails and has a pretty good idea when he’s on the move. If you have any questions, feel free to contact them: 406-447-8077.
What should I do if I find him? Take a selfie! And don’t forget to tag
@HelenaParksRecreation and use the hashtag #SQUATCHOUT to enter our photo contest.
When is Sasquatch on the move? Typically, he likes to find a new trail
on Fridays to make everyone’s weekend adventures a bit more interesting. Check our social media every week to get clues on where he’s off to next.
Where do I start? Try downloading an app or visiting a website like
AllTrails.com that has information on popular hikes and trailhead locations around Helena. Basecamp has paper maps for sale if that’s more your style. Once you are on the trails, markers will direct you, making it easy to stay on the course you’ve chosen. If you’ve never hiked or biked before, getting started doesn’t need to be intimidating. Remember that everyone is there to enjoy themselves so don’t worry about the destination and enjoy the journey!
Why should I participate? Sasquatch knows Helena’s open lands better
10 9
than anyone. Pay attention to where he’s been and try to figure out where he’s going. You will find brand new trails you didn’t know existed before – maybe even a new favorite. No tickets, entry fee or reservation needed to participate – get outside and have some fun!
Join the fun, Join the hunt.

Cross Country Skiing The Last Chance Nordic Ski Club, in partnership with the City of Helena’s Parks and Recreation Department, grooms approximately four kilometers of skate and classic track around the perimeter of the golf course. The route of the groomed tracks are well-maintained and typically loop together across the gently rolling terrain. Skiing is free, and all skiers are welcome! Parking for the Golf Course is located at 2201 North Benton Avenue, which is immediately east of Benton Avenue, two driveways north of the railroad tracks. After your ski, stop in at Muni’s to relax, enjoy a beverage and a bite to eat. If you are snowshoeing, walking your dog or on foot, please avoid the groomed ski tracks as well as the golf course’s tees and greens. For trail use suggestions, guidelines and a track map visit the Last Chance Nordic Ski Club’s website: www.LCNSC.org

Helena’s Parks & Open Lands Centennial Trail and the trails around Centennial Park are open year round for hiking, biking and enjoying our public parks The Parks Maintenance Department keeps them plowed and relatively free of ice. The open lands trailhead parking areas are plowed as needed and the trails are open to hiking year round. Ice cleats are recommended once the trails are packed with snow and ice. Helena has thirty parks that include playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, community events, bike and pedestrian trails, dog parks, skate parks and bike jumps. All of our parks and trails are beautifully maintained by Parks Maintenance staff and our Urban Forestry Division. These features are designed and developed so that people of all ages, abilities and incomes can participate in the excellent recreational activities this wonderful city has to offer. Helena’s open lands hold precious scenic, cultural and recreational values. Open lands are a spectacular backdrop for our town and provide citizens with access to a variety of recreation opportunities. The City of Helena currently owns and manages over 1,950 acres of undeveloped parkland, including the popular Mount Helena City Park and several other trail locations. Turn the Recreation Guide Sideways to check out some animal tracks that you may see as you spend time on Helena’s open lands. Can you identify who’s tracks are circling this page?
