WELCOME to our first City of Helena Parks and Recreation Guide! I’m new to being the Helena Parks Director, having just started this summer, but I’m not new to Helena and the great search for winter activities and recreation.

I’ve always said that you have to partake in winter recreation to Ponozzo make it through a Montana winter. Kristi City of Helena Parks, Recreation and Open Lands Director Luckily, in Helena we have plenty of opportunities. This guide is just the tip of the iceberg of the many amazing opportunities Helena has to offer.

Our ice skating rink located in Memorial Park is a fun and affordable way to get outside, do a little skating and maybe enjoy a warm cup of cocoa.

We provide year-round use of our parks and plow parking lots and urban paths for playing, walking, biking and jogging. We even plow the parking lots of our open lands trailheads for easy access to hiking, snowshoeing and skiing.

The Bill Roberts Municipal Golf Course is not just for golfing.

In the winter, the Last Chance Nordic Ski Club grooms skate and classic track. And there’s indoor golf with our golf simulators in cozy Muni’s Sports Club and Restaurant, also open year round.

Helena parks are open all winter. So bundle up, throw on your boots, and head outside!

Memorial Park Warming House and Ice Skating The Memorial Park Warming House is a cozy place to rent skates, enjoy hot chocolate and glide along the ice under twinkling lights.

Warming House hours are weather dependent.

Dates: Mid December - Mid February Extended hours during Helena School District Winter Break.

Unattended Ice Rinks Rinks are located at Cunningham Park, Barney Park and Lincoln Park. The rinks are open from dawn to dusk. You must bring your own gear and skates. Please avoid the ice while it is freezing.

About the Helena Civic Center Originally built as a Shrine temple in 1920, the Helena Civic Center is now owned and operated by the City of Helena. The Helena Civic Center offers the community a unique place to enjoy concerts, conferences, conventions, banquets, balls, wedding receptions, expositions, art shows and other special events. To book your special event contact the Civic Center today.

The Helena Civic Center houses two major facilities: the 1,925 seat Auditorium Theater and the 15,000 sq. ft. Ballroom exhibition hall, which is used for banquets, craft shows, dances, weddings, trade shows and conferences. The Auditorium and Ballroom may be booked separately or together for an event. The Ballroom facility includes a second floor mezzanine over-looking the ballroom and a catering kitchen with a walk-in cooler. The Auditorium contains a Green Room, two (2) stage-level dressing rooms and two (2) upper-level dressing rooms.

How to Buy Tickets ONLINE: You may BUY TICKETS ONLINE 24/7 through our online Box Office. Tickets that are purchased more than four days before an event will be mailed to patrons. Tickets that are purchased within five days of the event will be held at will call. We encourage all patrons that have will call tickets to pick their tickets up prior to the event to avoid long lines.

BY PHONE: You may purchase tickets by phone during regular business hours by calling 406-447-8481. Tickets that are purchased more than four days before an event will be mailed to patrons. Tickets that are purchased within five days of the event will be held at will call. We encourage all patrons that have will call tickets to pick their tickets up prior to the event to avoid long lines.

IN PERSON: If you wish to buy tickets in person, you can come to the Civic Center Box Office during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Box Office is located in the vestibule at the main entrance (south side) of the building.

Bill Roberts Golf Course Ski Tracks The Last Chance Nordic Ski Club, in partnership with the City of Helena’s Parks and Recreation Department, grooms approximately four kilometers of skate and classic track around the perimeter of the golf course. The route of the groomed tracks are well-maintained and typically loop together across the gently rolling terrain.

Skiing is free, and all skiers are welcome!

Parking for the Golf Course is located at 2201 North Benton Avenue, which is immediately east of Benton Avenue, two driveways north of the railroad tracks. After your ski, stop in at Muni’s to relax, enjoy a beverage and a bite to eat.

If you are snowshoeing, walking your dog or on foot, please avoid the groomed ski tracks as well as the golf course’s tees and greens. For trail use suggestions, guidelines and a track map visit the Last Chance Nordic Ski Club’s website: WWW.LCNSC.ORG

The Holiday season begins with the annual Parade of Lights on November 29th, 2019. Be a spectator or sign up and participate in the parade. After the parade join us in Pioneer Park for some exciting announcements.

Rise and Shine Saturday morning and come meet Santa. Breakfast with Santa takes place at Bert & Ernie’s. After Breakfast with Santa, enjoy downtown and participate in Small Business Saturday.

The Parade of Lights is a Downtown holiday tradition to kick off the holiday season co-sponsored by the Helena Business Improvement District and Downtown Helena, Inc. This event gathers friends and families together to officially start the holiday season off with a parade and festivities.

Prizes will be awarded to the Best of Show: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place of all entries regardless of category.

PARADE ROUTE: The parade starts at 6 p.m. and goes from Fuller Avenue to Placer, turns right onto Last Chance Gulch, proceed through the Pedestrian Mall past the Lewis & Clark Library and Pioneer Park.

The parade will end at the Lewis & Clark Library and awards immediately to follow.

Helena’s Open Lands

Helena’s open lands hold precious scenic, cultural and recreational values. Open lands are a spectacular backdrop for our town and with provide citizens with access to a variety of recreation opportunities.

The City of Helena currently owns and manages over 1,950 acres of undeveloped parkland, including the popular Mount Helena City Park and several other trail locations.

Helena’s Parks

Helena has 30 parks that include playground equipment, tennis courts, basketball courts, community events, bike and pedestrian trails, dog parks, skate parks and bike jumps. All of our parks and trails are beautifully maintained by Parks Maintenance staff and our Urban Forestry Division.

These features are designed and developed so that people of all ages, abilities and incomes can participate in the excellent recreational activities this wonderful city has to offer.
