FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Hello Everyone, “We must be free not because we claim Freedom, but because we practice it.” –William Faulkner I’ve been thinking about these words a lot lately. It may be because I’ve only recently noticed how three of our most prominent Patriotic Holidays – Memorial Day, Flag Day and Independence Day – are celebrated within a six-week period. Or it may be because having recently attended two of the three, the Memorial Day Celebration at the Alabama National Cemetery and the Cahaba Valley Elks Flag Day celebration at the PCC, that

I am sorely disappointed at the poor turnout at these events. I suppose it’s possible to practice freedom by associating these holidays with cooking meat on the grill, being away from work, or enjoying a long weekend at the beach or lake. Certainly, there is nothing unAmerican about a hot dog or a day at the beach, but I fear hedonism is replacing patriotism in our country; and it appears to be a generational thing. Webster defines the word patriot as: “One who loves and zealously supports one’s own country.” It was hard to miss that the good citizens in attendance at both the National Cemetery and the Flag Day celebration were disproportionally gray. Who will carry on our Patriotic displays,

traditions and ceremonies when our seniors are no longer able to do so? Heredity passes many things down to our children, but Patriotism is not one of them. Patriotism must be taught. Our children, friends and neighbors will only learn to revere, love and pay tribute to all things, Patriotic and American, if we give them an example to follow. Congratulations to Pelham Police Officer Mike Williams and Pelham Fire Department Firefighter/Paramedic John Meredith for being selected as the American Legion, Pelham Post 555, Police Officer and Firefighter of the year. Fire/ Medic John Meredith went on to be recognized in Huntsville, Alabama, as the American Legion Firefighter of the year for the State of Alabama. Thank you for what you do and for representing us so well. Lastly, I wish to extend my appreciation to the City of Pelham Personnel Board, the Pelham City Council and Ms. Janis Parks, City o0f Pelham

Human Resources Director, for their selfless effort in the revision of the City of Pelham Civil Service Law. Furthermore, many thanks to the Shelby County Legislative Delegation for getting this revised document – Act 2015-410 - through the legislative process this session and signed into law by Governor Bentley. To IAFF Local 5049, I’ll close by sharing my opinion that your efforts to represent the interests of but a slice of the Pelham workforce put at risk nine months of hard work and the welfare of 220 other city employees. Thanks for nothing. Don’t forget Fire on the Water, July 3, Oak Mountain State Park. The fireworks show begins at 9 pm/dark. Come early for best viewing. I’ll see you there. Have a great and safe summer, everyone.

FROM COUNCILMAN MERCER Greetings to All Residents, Businesses, and Visitors to Pelham. It seems as if summer came in on a steam roller! We all know Pelham is the perfect place to Play & Stay but please exercise caution in the heat. According to the CDC, “During 2006–2010, 10,649 deaths of U.S. residents were attributed to weatherrelated causes of death. Exposure to excessive natural heat, heatstroke, sun stroke, or all were cited as either the underlying cause or a contributing cause of death for 3,332 (31%) of these deaths.” Please stay hydrated with plenty of water and wear the appropriate sunblock. There are many things happening in Pelham this summer. I want to encourage each of you to join us at our 2nd annual Fire on the Water on Friday July 3rd. If you missed the fun last year, then you are in for a treat this year. Please make plans to attend. Exactly two weeks after our Nation’s anniversary on Independence Day weekend, we will host the Pelham Palooza, which will be our 3rd Festival. Please be sure to join us. The City of Pelham recently received an unqualified

opinion at the completion of our FY 2014 Audit at our June Council Meeting. The unqualified opinion (Best/ clean opinion) represents that the financial statements present a fair and accurate picture of the city’s finances and comply with generally accepted accounting principles. I’d like to acknowledge Tom Seale, our Finance Director, and Eddie Jowers, our Public Works Director, for the complete cooperation with our independent auditor which helped make the process smooth. There is no doubt that they each work within their budgets and do a great job for the city! Next, the council has received many calls in support of the current moratorium on certain businesses within the city of Pelham. We extended the moratorium for one more year to gather data and analyze the need for having certain business like vape (E-Cigs) shops, pawn shops, car dealers, etc. Thank you for your continued support on this issue. In creating and promoting Pelham as the Best Place to Play & Stay, we have to make sure businesses fit into the model. Do we have too much

of one type of business and not enough of another type of business? Many of you know this answer. Furthermore, July marks the 1 year anniversary of our CDA. I’m grateful for the Commercial Development Authority which will continue to work to see what opportunities are presented for Pelham for new and existing businesses. I cannot encourage you enough to SHOP & EAT-IN PELHAM FIRST. We have a lot of businesses in Pelham to handle most of your needs. As I talk to business owners, they have suggested we take a more Pelham First approach. I have always been an advocate for our restaurants and will continue to be. We have excellent and award-winning establishments here. With “Licensed” Food Trucks in Pelham, the food just got better! Please do your part and anonymously report an unlicensed food truck to our code enforcement officer. Since we are talking about food,

don’t forget the 3rd Annual Taste of Pelham sponsored by the Pelham Library Guild scheduled for August 25, 2015 at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena. This event has grown tremendously and it’s a time to support the Library Guild and local restaurants in Pelham & Shelby County. I’d like to go on record by thanking the City of Pelham, City of Helena, and City of Alabaster for proclaiming June as Scleroderma Awareness Month. This Proclamation is near to my heart and the 300,000 patients living with scleroderma each year. We may not have found a cure while my mother lived, but the continued research and awareness may help someone else soon! With this text, I’d like to honor our fellow 9 Americans who lost their lives in a heinous Continued on page 7

and senseless act in Charleston, South Carolina, at Emmanuel AME Church. As a gun owner, I’ve never taken a weapon into a church as I have always considered it a safe haven. I understand why the members were helpless at their place of worship. I cannot imagine going through anything like that. It seems like something out of a 1960s playbook. There is a song called “A New Hallelujah” and its words are simple, Arise, Arise Let the church Arise. Let Love reach to the other side Arise let the church come alive...let everyone sing a new Hallelujah. We must unite against all acts of terror both foreign and domestic. When we see the world from a kid’s perspective, we are in a better place. I watch my oldest Emma and her friends, and you would think they were

born friends. As a country, we are stronger by the things that unite us. That is no different in Pelham. We all want Safe Communities, Great Schools, Freedom of Faith, and Family. I’m glad to live in a community that recognizes that. I can say our Pelham Police Department works hard to make sure those areas are protected! Let’s continue to be a light to other cities and show them how to do it right! Yours In Service,

Pelham City Schools teachers spend time in the classroom this summer This summer, Pelham City Schools organized numerous professional development (PD) clinics that will be attended by nearly all teachers. According to PCS Curriculum Director Dr. Elisabeth Davis, the school board and administrators worked together to determine professional development plans that support the implementation of targeted, rigorous courses in the school system. Building an aligned curriculum through all schools that feeds into the new academies at Pelham High School will help prepare students to successfully transition to the workforce and/ or college. “We needed to be strategic about the scope of PD offerings, so we could promote college and career readiness throughout the system,” Dr. Davis said. “We had to build the foundation this summer, so going forward, our entire system will have the vision and tools to provide instruction for

21st century kids.” “This trumps everything I’ve ever been a part of,” Dr. Davis said about the scope of the professional development offerings. With teachers learning how to implement everything from The Leader In Me initiatives, to Project Lead the Way, We The People and others, it’s easy to see how right she is. Middle and high school teachers are also being certified in teaching a larger selection of Advanced Placement (AP) and Pre-AP courses being offered this fall. The foundation for the new curriculum initiatives was based on the results gathered from community input when the school system was being developed. “The survey results were used to create the plans for the curriculum and technology programs we’re now implementing,” Dr. Davis explained. In addition to the focus on professional development, plans are being rolled out this summer to

introduce over one thousand new student devices in the schools, and additional laptop carts and computer labs that will provide students with increased access to technology. PCS will also be introducing Pathways, a new initiative that gives middle and high school students the option to do course work completely online or in combination with some face-toface classes. This program provides a powerful digital platform for students who benefit from a nontraditional learning experience.

With rigorous and varied courses of study, Pelham teachers will be ready to teach students everything they learned in PD classes this summer. “We are constantly evaluating to make sure we have a focus on what we need for our teachers and our students,” concludes Dr. Davis. The year-round dedication of Pelham City Schools’ teachers and administrators, even in the lazy days of summer, is key to new and exciting learning opportunities for students come fall.

Karyl Rice received 30 Year Service Award

At the May 19 city council meeting, Mayor Gary Waters presented Councilmember Karyl Rice with a 30 Year Service Award from the Alabama League of Municipalities and the National League of Cities. “I’ve seen a lot of changes in

my 30 years,” Karyl began. “I was fortunate to be first elected when Mayor Hayes, the father of our esteemed council president, was elected.” She explained that city council and mayor worked together to bring a sewer system for the residents of the city as one of its first projects after being sworn into office. “We tackled that and the city began to explode!” she said. “Since then, I think we have kept up with the amount of growth in a manner that is beneficial to the city.” With a city career spanning three mayors and many fellow city council members, countless city council meetings and town halls, from bringing a sewer sys-

tem to a school system to the city, Karyl really has helped do so much for Pelham. “Congratulations, Karyl, for the amazing things you have done,” Council President Rick Hayes said during the meeting. “The work you guys put in really means a lot to us and to the city.” Ever humble, Karyl passed on the thanks to the many city employees who have worked in Pelham the last 30 years. “Thanks to all the city employees—they grew the departments pretty quick in that time (while the

city was booming after the sewer became a reality), we couldn’t have done it without them.” “It has been a pleasure to be a part of the growth of this city,” Karyl said in conclusion. “And I cannot wait to see what else we can accomplish in the time that I am here.”

Hunter Stovall named Gatorade’s baseball player of the year for state PHS star athlete and now graduate Hunter Stovall was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Alabama for 2015! character across the county. According to the Gatorade website, prospects are rated in three areas: Athletic Achievement, Academic Excellence and Exemplary Character. Anyone who has played with or against Hunter or watched him play have seen his sportsmanship in action. His skills, playmaking abilities and leadership were a contributing force to team success over the course of his career at PHS, so it’s no wonder why he was considered for this honor. “I think what really stuck out for them is just the kind of person I am,” Hunter said about receiving this award. “I am a big Christian, I work with charities and help disabled kids learn how to play baseball.” The catcher has worked with St. Jude, the March of Dimes and groups raising money for ovarian cancer. Earlier this year, Hunter and several of his teammates at PHS worked with Urban Purpose in Birmingham,

feeding and serving the homeless. Hunter was actually on a family cruise when Gatorade let him know he won the award. “My girlfriend was getting our mail for us while we were gone, and she let me know they sent me a plaque and a Gatorade water bottle with ‘Player of the Year’ on it,” he said. “But the coolest thing to me was, they emailed me a link to a video where they congratulated me for winning,” Hunter said. “At the end of the video, John Smoltz, Derek Jeter, LeBron James and several other athletes all welcomed me to the Gatorade club, because each of them won player of the year when they were in high school, too.” Hunter’s plans for the rest of the summer are to play some baseball and finish getting ready to head off to Mississippi State in August. “I’m very ready to go,” he said. Congratulations, Hunter, Gatorade Player of the Year.

Residential Beautification Award—708 Wilderness Road

This month’s Beautification Award goes to the home of Robert and Gail Thomas at 708 Wilderness Road. The Thomas’ neighbors have watched the complete transformation of this yard since the inception of this project, which began a year ago in June. Robert and Gail have re-styled their home of twenty-one years from the inside out. “This all

began when our roof was damaged by hail and replaced,” Robert explained. “Both the front and back yard were so overgrown, we had forgotten we had so much space.” The overgrown trees—magnolia, huge water oak and a sycamore were cut down and removed; the yard was leveled and new sod— Bermuda in the front and Zoysia in the back are now lushly green. Tiered stacked stone-bordered beds were added at the right side of the house and planted with Burning Bush and Hydrangea and ZouZou Lorepetalum that segue around to the front bed where variegated Kaleidoscope Abelia and Pittsporum lead the eye to the anchoring feature, a Juniper Procumbens on the far left. From there, a curving bed of pink Drift Roses curves out to the sidewalk that leads to the front door. A rose that belonged to Gail’s mother is incorporated in this

A connection that can’t be broken When 8-year-old Connor Herrero thinks about his time at Valley Elementary School, a very special person sticks out in his mind—his friend, the late Connor Jacobs. The pair met in Mrs. Trainer’s kindergarten class at VES and immediately hit it off. “I just felt like I’d known him my whole life,” Connor H. said. “We had a connection that couldn’t be broken.” Kristen and Jack Jacobs could not have been more thrilled when the Connors became friends. Their son, Connor J., had cerebral palsy, which confined him to a wheelchair and meant he did not speak. “Sometimes kids don’t understand kids with special needs, but that never seemed to bother Connor H.,” Kristen said. “He would sit and read to him, and just spend time with him. It was so nice for him to have a friend.” Jack agreed, “That Connor H. would spend time with him, hours of the day with our son, means the world to us.”

Principal Deberah Miller recalls asking Connor H. about his favorite memory from VES before he moved up to the intermediate school. She said he thought for just a moment before answering, “The day I met Connor J.” A few months ago, Connor J. lost his battle with cerebral palsy, and Connor H. lost his best friend. “In my heart I feel really sad, and in my head I’m emotional,” Connor H. said. He wanted to do something to honor his friend, so he talked with his mother Ashlea Herrero and they thought up the idea for a hat day fundraiser for Carly’s Clubhouse. Both VES and VIS students participated in this fundraiser. “I was very happy the school decided to do this, but thinking about Connor makes me sad,” the 8-year-old said. “The Connors talked about how excited they were for Carly’s Clubhouse to open so they could play together,” Principal Miller added. “So Connor H. wanted

Their daughter, Samantha, graduated PHS in1998 and son, Robbie, in 2001. They are grandparents to Liam, Evan and Elliot Reed. “We are looking forward to a big thank you bash this fall for everyone who has worked with us this past year and we will be setting up our new deluxe croquet set on

the Zoysia,” Robert enthused. The final phase at 708 Wilderness Road is the backyard natural area, “that looked like the Amazon” and will be planted with dogwood, Japanese maple and butterfly-attracting perennials. There, too, Robert will place his two beehives, the care and tending of which he learned from his grandfather. This well-earned Beautification Award tells the inspiring tale of what can be achieved when the time is right for renewal!

to give back and honor his friend this way. It’s helping him heal.” “Whoever thought up Carly’s Clubhouse is a very good person—there’s not enough words to describe it,” Connor H. said. “Mr. Dustin Chandler is an awesome man.” He had the opportunity to meet Dustin at VES on hat day, when he came to accept the donation for the clubhouse. Connor J. loved Captain America, so Connor H. specifi-

cally wore a shirt with a symbol of Captain America’s shield to remember him on hat day. Every child, faculty or staff member who wanted to wear a hat in school made a $1 or more donation to Carly’s Clubhouse. VES students raised $505 and VIS students raised $230.50, for a total donation of $735.50 in honor of Connor Jacobs. The Connors’ story proves just how much impact a great friendship can have on people’s lives.

She is co-founder and owner of Grinkmeyer Leonard Financial, Grinkmeyer Leonard Benefits Group (an employer benefits company), and ShutterLuxe, a window treatment company she and her husband own together. With running three successful businesses and being Mom to three small children, staying balanced is very important to Valerie. “I do my best to keep my relationship with God my first priority. It is only by His grace that everything else in my life has fallen into place. My prayer each day is that He will give me ears to hear Him, eyes to see Him, and the courage to do His will in all things. Second is my family, and third is my business. Curiously, though, my clients most often become like my family, so they are a valuable part of who I am.” Valerie notes, “I have heard it said that “It is a beautiful thing when a career and passion come together.” I feel so incredibly blessed that I get to do what I am passionate about every day.” Her family recently started attending Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster, and she is excited about the opportunities there for outreach and discipleship across Shelby County. Valerie’s most recent national recognition came from the InvestmentNews “40 Under 40” award. In March 2015, she was

awarded Employee Benefit News Rising Star Award in advising, which recognizes people in the benefits industry who are innovative, aged 35 or younger and are making a difference. Valerie was also nominated for the NAPA Young Guns: Top 50 Plan Advisors Under 40 and winners will be announced this month. Valerie was recently selected from a small group of leading financial advisors to attend the 2015 NAPA DC Fly-In. In July, she will meet with policy makers in D.C. and provide feedback on key issues and recent proposals while gaining insight into new legislative initiatives. Valerie is very excited about this opportunity and shared, “As the only constituent from Alabama, I will have the chance to meet one-on-one with Senator Richard Shelby to educate him on how federal proposals will impact our clients. I consider this a great honor but also a huge responsibility.” Valerie also noted, “I’ve reached out to Mayor Waters to determine how I can help advocate on the City of Pelham’s behalf while meeting

14 PelhamOnline.com / Summer 2015

with Senator Shelby.” When asked about what makes her different from other financial advisors, she says, “It’s simple; passion is my driving force. Knowledge and expertise are things I crave; genuine concern and proactive service are second nature to me. I feel like the financial services industry has done an injustice to clients everywhere by focusing on generating sales commissions, fees and income for themselves instead of putting their clients first. For me it is always the client first.” Valerie is offering a special video series to Pelham residents featuring “The True Value of Money.” If you would like to receive this

video, please contact info@ grinkmeyerleonard.com.

Pelham Schools Introduce Project Lead the Way Curriculum Project Lead the Way is a new curriculum initiative Pelham City Schools will implement beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, according to Curriculum Director Dr. Elisabeth Davis. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the nation’s leading provider of science, technology, engineering, and math programs and a key course component of the new PHS academies that will guide students on their path to career readiness. Through an activity and project based-based curriculum, PLTW gives students in kindergarten through high school a chance to identify problems and find solutions that lead to their own learning. Earlier this summer, Valley Intermediate School hosted a PLTW workshop with national leaders teaching elementary school educators how to bring engineering and computer science to the classroom. 26 Pelham teachers attended, along with than 20 others from Alabama and Mississippi. “Teachers are participating in

a variety of hands-on activities to discover what the students will be experiencing. We’re working in cooperative groups to solve scientific and engineering problems, discuss strategies for teaching, and solve the required problems or tasks,” commented Valley Elementary teacher Carol Prater. Kay Goolsby, from Valley Elementary, also attended the training. “I’m so excited to start PLTW in 2nd grade because I know the students will be so anxious to explore…They will love being engineers and working in a student-centered environment where they can guide their own learning process, be responsible for their learning, and enjoy their success,” she said. Middle school and high school teachers have also attended in-depth classes and have to pass a test to earn

the PLTW teacher distinction in the upper levels of biomedical science and engineering. These intensive classes are being held this summer at Auburn University, Alabama’s Project Lead the Way affiliate. The biomedical sciences program for students introduces an extensive, year-long project that will force students to think creatively when problem-solving. “They will investigate the death of a fictional person, explore body systems and diseases and present how they could have saved the person,” Dr. Davis

explained. “Only two systems in Alabama will offer PLTW engineering curriculum from K through 12 next year: Pelham and Huntsville City, and we are proud of that distinction,” she went on to say. “Bringing engineering and all this other knowledge to Pelham students at a young age will help their problem-solving skills develop significantly. It’s amazing what kids can do after going through these programs together.” More information about Project Lead the Way can be found at www.PLTW.org.

Commercial Beautification Award—Donut Joe’s

Donut Joe’s celebrated the 6th anniversary of their Pelham location on June 26th! “I’m continually thankful for everyone who has supported us here and in Gardendale,” owner Rich Byrd said. “And appreciate daily our great staff; we couldn’t do it without them.” On National Donut Day, June 5, they gave away a $100 Donut Joe’s gift card and, along the way, they have garnered 11,000 likes on their FB page. Rich Byrd recalls, “Our first customer on opening day at 5:30 am was a Pelham cop and he called his buddies to tell them Donut Joe’s is finally open. Soon we had a swarm of police cars—it looked like a drug bust!” Today the parking area has been enlarged and enhanced with a curb line of yellow knockout roses and nandina (installed by Edge To Edge Lawn & Landscape) near the outdoor sitting area.

Early on, as Byrd saw the success of Donut Joe’s, he trademarked his recipe and branding. Donut Joe’s Coffee and t-shirts are always popular, along with the best-selling maple bacon donut and seasonal special concoctions. “I’m a business person who is creative,” said Byrd, whose son Eric Byrd is also a part of the business. “I continue to analyze what elements make for success.” “I read The Art of the Deal by Donald Trump in my late teens and it hit home with me— the concept of doing business boldly.” Donut Joe’s offers licensing under specific conditions; an interested party can pay to secure the rights in a specific area for a period of time. “Going forward we want controlled growth,” he said. Rich Byrd and Donut Joe’s send out a big Thank You to the Pelham community for six great years together!

Pelham hotel community adds to strong local economy With more than 14 hotels, motels and lodging possibilities in the city, Pelham really is the hotel mecca for Shelby County. “It was the amphitheater being built that brought hotels here,” Mayor Gary Waters explained. “The Oak Mountain Travelodge was the first one.” Performances at Oak Mountain Amphitheater regularly bring the largest amount of visitors to the city to stay in hotels, eat at local restaurants, visit Pelham attractions and gas stations and generally bring in sales tax revenue for the city. ‘ “The Luke Bryan concert, for example, filled every hotel room in the city,” Mayor Waters confirmed. Recent events like the Division III collegiate hockey championship, held at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, not to mention the weddings, conferences and banquets held in that facility year-round, often fill up Pelham lodging facilities. This year’s Bowling Congress at Oak Mountain Lanes and the annual Women’s $25,000 Challenger at the Pelham Racquet Club were also big draws for the city, helping to bring national and international patrons to city hotels. People who travel to stay at Pelham’s hotels tend to visit Oak Mountain State Park (OMSP), Ballantrae Golf Club and other attractions as well.

City Finance Director Tom Seale confirmed that in lodging revenue alone, hotels brought Pelham $310,554 in the fiscal year for 2013, $308,923 in 2014, and $202,508 through May for this year. Add to that other spending travelers do in the city and the strong impact on Pelham’s economy is clear. “I’ve asked people why they chose to stay at hotels in Pelham, and often they say, ‘This is the last stop before you get to Birmingham,’” Mayor Waters said. “And that’s true. People tend to think of anything around 459 as Birmingham, and Oak Mountain is the ‘last stop’ before you reach the higher prices in the Birmingham metro area.” “We actually have people who stay in Pelham during Talledega weekend,” Mayor Waters continued. “It’s like ripples in the water—the farther you get away from the race, the cheaper hotels are. So Pelham really is in a prime location to provide lodging for all sorts of events.” The city is still discussing building a hotel and conference center at OMSP with the Shelby County Commission and the Alabama State Parks Association. A feasibility study conducted last year said seven acres in the park could support a 175-room hotel with more than 15,000 square feet of conference rooms and 350 parking spaces.

Pelham Palooza Echosmith plays Friday, July 17

Saturday, July 18 will be an all-day-long concert featuring Alabama-based Sweet Tea Trio and Act of Congress as well as American Idol finalist Casey James and other up-and-coming artists

Many consider Rollin’ in the Hay to be a Renegade Bluegrass or “Newgrass” band, with Rick Carter on vocals and guitar, Stan Foster on vocals and electric bass, Johnny (Fontana) Kulinich on guitar, mandolin and banjo and Leif Bondarenko on vocals and drums. This lively, foot-stompin’ band has opened for Greg Allman, Charlie Daniels, The Doobie Brothers, Alabama and Widespread Panic, just to name a few.

Act of Congress is a Birmingham-based Americana group consisting of Connie Skellie on vocals and fiddle, Adam Wright on keyboard, Chris Griffin on guitar and Tim Carroll Jr. on the upright bass. They have performed at WorkPlay and with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra as well as opened for Toby Keith and John Mayer.

Casey James was the third-place finalist in the ninth season of American Idol. USA Today music critic Brian Mansfield said Casey was the best guitar player American Idol had ever seen. He signed with Sony in 2010, opened for Sugarland in 2011 and released his hugely popular single Crying on a Suitcase in 2012.

Bring a lawn chair and spend the day listening to good music, shopping and playing on fun attractions at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena during Pelham Palooza!

Echosmith is an American rock and pop band formed in February of 2009 in Los Angeles by the siblings Graham, Sydney, Noah and Jamie Sierota. Sydney (18) sings lead vocals and plays the keyboard and tambourine. Noah (19) plays bass and sings back-up vocals.

Jamie (22) sings and plays guitar. Graham (16) plays drums. Echosmith’s debut album, Talking Dreams, was released on the Warner Brothers label in October 2013. They played the entire Vans Warped Tour that year and have opened for bands like Owl City,

Twenty One Pilots and Neon Trees. Their hit song “Cool Kids” reached number 13 on the Billboard charts last year. Their song “Surround You” is in the soundtrack for the film Endless Love. They played before a speech by Hillary Clinton in June, and will perform in Pelham during

Pelham Palooza! On Friday, July 17, be sure and come check out this sibling foursome who have become one of MTV’s “artists to watch!” They will take the stage at 7pm as part of the 103.7 the Q Just Show Up Show Concert Series, all of which are free, like Pelham Palooza itself.

Sylvia Traynam and Susan Jackson retire from VES

Valley Elementary School Principal Deberah Miller is sad to see two longstanding members of the staff retire this summer: Physical Education teacher Susan Jackson and Kindergarten teacher Sylvia Traynam. "In just a year of being here, seeing the impact these teachers have on our kids is immeasurable," she said. "They are going to be missed!" Principals from years ago and former students returned to VES for the retirement party. "So many people came to show their

love for these teachers, I can only imagine the number of people whose lives they have touched throughout the years," Principal Miller said. She assures any worried parents that the amazing PE program Mrs. Jackson started will continue with PE teacher Ginger Aaron. And it's only fitting that on Susan and Sylvia's last day at school, all the other teachers organized a fully choreographed dance to celebrate their friends. We wish happy retirement to Susan and Sylvia!

RMS OUTSTANDING 8TH GRADERS

Arshnoor Grewal

Arshnoor Grewal (daughter of Harjinder and

Jaswinder Grewal): Arshnoor’s favorite RMS memory was before a band concert. “We had to quietly walk down the hallway to the stage, but it was too hard because I kept trying to laugh because of my hilarious bandmates.” Mrs. Crawford, without a doubt, is her favorite teacher. “She’s so brilliantly different. She’s not afraid to push us. I’ll never forget her. I hope I find another Mrs. Crawford.” Arshnoor’s mom is the biggest influence in her life. “Without her, I’d probably be failing math. She helped me create all my healthy habits, gave me an early statrt. She’s my role model, she inspires me to work hard.” In high school, Arshnoor wants to explore. “I want to find my passion, and soon.” In twenty years, she will be happy, no matter what. “I want to be laughing and having fun with my friends and family there smiling with me.”

Akilaah Cason

Akilaah Cason (dauughter of Allison Cason):

“My favorite RMS memory was when I was picked to be student of the year. I was very surprised and scared at first, but I was pretty excited. I will say that I thought it was a joke at first until after they had called my name twice.” Akilaah’s favorite RMS teacher is Mrs. Brotherton. “She helped me throughout the year and helped me understand some things that I didn’t know. She first influenced me to be a teacher, but I thought about it more and told myself that I would like to be a lawyer when I grow up.” Akilaah’s most influential person is her mom. “She taught me right from wrong. She told me to always work hard to get what you want in life. She told me to stick with your own crowd that won’t bring you down–I will always remember that.” In high school, Akilaah wants to work hard, get good grades, and make more friends. She sees herself living with a friend in New York in 20 years, working as a lawyer, and traveling the world.

Kasey Clark

Kasey Clark (son of Tanya and Chad Clark):

Kasey’s favorite memory at RMS was winning the conference championships in baseball and catching the game-winning touchdown against Briarwood in overtime. “My favorite RMS teacher is Mrs. Melton because we watched The Sandlot for the last week of school.” Both of Kasey’s parents act as influences in his life. “My mom keeps me straight in my schoolwork and my dad keeps me on the right path in sports, and they help me stay humble.” His plans for high school? “Win State in baseball and football, make good grades and set myself up for a successful life in and out of sports.” In twenty years, Kasey sees himself: “Under the lights, playing baseball in front of thousands of people in the Big Leagues.”

Erika Johnson

Erika Johnson (daughter of Phillip and Mary

Johnson): “I have many favorite RMS memories. My first memory was this year when I did the talent show with Cami Weaver. Another memory is being inducted in the National Junior Honor Society.” “My all-time favorite teachers have to be Mrs. Reeves and Coach Collins. I loved Mrs. Reeves’ science class all year, and I loved Coach Collins’ crazy stories.” The most influential people in Erika’s life are her parents. “Throughout my life, they have taught me to only settle for the best and they have taught me many characteristics and many life lessons.” In high school, Erika plans to graduate with an advanced diploma and to “achieve the most I can achieve in high school.” Twenty years from now, Erika sees herself as “a dentist with a husband, a boy and a girl, two beagles, and living in Alabama.”

Stephanie Garcia

Stephanie Garcia (daughter of Victoria and Salusto

Garcia): “My favorite RMS memories are band related. Mrs. Moore is an amazing band director; she provides us with many opportunities. I enjoyed participating in MPA, honor bands, concerts, solo and ensemble.” Her favorite teacher is Mr. McDonald. “He pushes us to reach our fullest potential. He taught me, ‘If it’s not a sentence, its wrong.’” The most influential person in Stephanie’s life is her friend JSB. “He helped me find my way in life by showing me just how important an education is.” Stephanie has many plans for high school. “I hope to learn Mandarin Chinese as a third language, continue to participate in band, play soccer, and expand my knowledge.” Twenty years from now, Stephanie may still be in school. “I see myself attending UAB for a degree in neurosurgery. I would also like to own a small music school where kids can receive private lessons.”

Ethan Reed

Ethan Reed (son of Cari and Daniel Reed): Ethan’s

favorite memories were making the RMS Soccer team, being accepted into the National Junior Honor Society, and being second chair trombone in the RMS Sixth grade band. Coach Collins is his favorite teacher because he is funny and teaches history. “But what I like most is he cracks down on the kids who do wrong.” Ethan’s dad is the most influential person in his life. “I want to be like him. He comes to all my soccer games no matter how far away they are. He is one of the reasons why I am at the place I am now.” In high school, Ethan plans to join the marching band, play on the soccer team, take Spanish, go into the Informational Technology Academy and get the Advanced Academic Endorsement with Honors Distinction diploma. In 20 years, he sees himself as a computer programmer with a family and a good home. “I can see myself teaching my kids sports and helping them with their homework.”

The

Future is in Good Hands

With Pelham High School ’ s Graduates of 2015

Each year, the Senior Counselor (Laura Cochran) and staff select six Pelham High School seniors that embody the traits that make them optimal representatives of their graduating class as well as their community. The following students share their favorite PHS memories and future plans. The day has finally arrived, and we want to commend each and every graduate on this major milestone—earning their high school diploma. Most importantly, we wish the Class of 2015 a future filled with happiness, good health and much success! Our (graduation) caps are off to you—Pelham High School Class of 2015!

ALEX RODRIGUEZARCEO

(son of Jose Rodriguez and Maria Arceo): “My favorite PHS memory is when all the students gather together at Pep rallies to cheer for our teams and how we always end holding each other’s shoulders singing the alma mater as one.” “Mrs. Murray has been my personal bank of trust and my inspiration to keep moving forward. My life at Pelham would not have been completed without her.” “The most influential people in my life have to be the teachers who made a special place in my heart. They taught me to keep moving forward and to learn from your mistakes, my success is dedicated to them. They know who they are.” Alex will attend the Jeff State Culinary program, then get his Master’s in Education at Montevallo. “In 20 years, I see myself offering PHS students internships at my world-renowned restaurant in Pelham while teaching my love of cooking and baking.”

ZACH ALLISON

(son of Jeff Allison): “I have countless memories here at PHS, but my favorite is setting the record for the most points in a Pelham basketball career while having the support of my friends.” “There are many amazing teachers that I have had great relationships with, but Mrs. Ross has been a huge supporter of me since junior year. We blessed each other with our awesome personalities.” The most influential person in Zach’s life is Coach Vincent, his middle school basketball coach and lifelong mentor. “He has been a positive impact in my life. He has taken similar paths in life that I want to take and he has been successful. He has always believed in my and been a huge supporter.” Zach will attend Auburn, major in Business Management, play basketball and room with his best friends. In 20 years, Zach sees himself with a successful job, loving wife with some amazing kids.

(daughter of Kelli Whipple): Abbey’s favorite memory at PHS is this year’s football game against Thompson. “I have always loved the joy and excitement of Friday night football and this year’s win was even better as we took on our rivals for the last time as students at PHS.” Abbey’s favorite teacher is Mrs. Burnett. “Her passion for literature is absolutely infectious and her deep care for each one of her students is very evident.” The most influential person in Abbey’s life was her dad. “He battled cancer so bravely for three years and fought with a smile on his face every day.” Abbey plans to attend the University of North Alabama, where she will double-major in sociology and Spanish. “Twenty years from now, I see myself working in international adoption and hopefully working on reforms to make the system better. I also hope to be married with a family.”

KYLE FULLER

(son of Bruce and Michele Fuller): “My favorite memory is senior night during football season. Being able to stand arm in arm with my fellow senior band members on the field one last time made it extra special.” “So many teachers have touched my life in different ways that I cannot choose just one to be my favorite. They taught me so much and prepared me for the future.” The most influential person in Kyle’s life is Jesus Christ. “He is guiding me as I begin my path towards my career, taking care of every step before I take it.” Kyle will attend UAB for Biomedical Sciences, then going to medical school. He also plans to continue to play her trumpet in the UAB band. “Many things can happen in 20 years. There is no way of knowing where I will be, but I hope to be working in a hospital, taking care of patients and performing surgeries, but also have a family of my own.”

JEREMY ROSS

(son of Donna and Jason Ross): “My favorite memory at PHS would be doing the high school musical with some of my best friends. It was a great experience even though I couldn’t sing very well.” Jeremy’s favorite teacher at PHS is his Spanish and Peer Helper teacher Mrs. Copes. “You could always go to her to just talk and she cared so much for her students.” The most influential person in Jeremy’s life is his brother. “He always sets a high standard and he’s just a very educated person who I model my life around.” Jeremy plans to attend Auburn University. “At Auburn, I will be living with two of my best friends and I will major in Business and Finance.” In twenty years: “I hope I have found a job that I enjoy and also provides for the family I hope to have. “

PRESLEY SHERER

(daughter of Bob and Melanie Sherer): “My favorite memory is marching down the hill before every home game for football as a PHS Pantherette.” Presley’s favorite PHS teacher is Mrs. Cochran. “From being my dance team sponsor, biology teacher, to my counselor, Mrs. Cochran is always there to help better her students.” The most influential person in Presley’s life is her mom. “She always goes the extra mile for me and also she has molded me to make me the person I am today.” Presley plans to attend Troy University to pursue a degree in Collaborative Education. “I see a bright future for myself at Troy and cannot wait to call Troy ‘home!’ GO TROJANS!” And in 20 years, Presley said, “I hope to have a family of my own and be a loving wife and mother of a Christian family. I hope you be successful in my career and be involved in my community.”
