FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

Hello, everyone, You don’t have to look far to see things happening in our city. Site preparation for the new Pelham Ridge Elementary School has begun on the east side of town. In the same neighborhood, on Huntley Parkway, the Grand Reserve Apartments have broken ground. Toward the center of town, we continue to vacate the property adjacent to Pelham City Park for the construction of Pelham Park Middle School that should begin early 2016. Not as visible is the build-out of the second floor of the Pelham

Water Works building. This space will be used as administrative offices for Pelham City Schools. A project that has been a long time coming is the expansion of the Pelham Senior Center. We will be breaking ground in May to expand this facility by a thousand square feet. Commercially, I am eagerly waiting for Harbor Freight Tools to open its doors, an event that should be mere weeks away and Burger King has committed to build a second store where Golden Rule BBQ has been for many years. As we continue to promote “Play & Stay” in Pelham, those of us who already “Stay” here almost have too many things to

do and “Play.” In the last few weeks I’ve almost had too much fun while attending the Prom at the Linda Nolen Center, the Riverchase Middle School Talent Contest, the opening night of the South City Theatre, the Alabama Frozen Tide end-ofseason Banquet, the Crawfish Boil at the Pelham Event Center and the Faculty Softball game where the Pelham High School squared off against the Helena High School Faculty. The final score was somewhat lopsided, so I won’t rub it in here. Then there was the Carly’s (Motorcycle) Ride and the Developmental Hockey League (“D” League) Exhibition Game carried on APH Radio raising funds for Carly’s Clubhouse. Collectively, these two events raised three thousand dollars. Speaking of the “D” League, Pelham now has an “on ramp” for adults who want to learn to play hockey. For the past 20

weeks, the developmental league has introduced 75 maniacal adults (some who have never skated) to the fun and challenges of hockey. I encourage you to call Randy Murphy at the PCC if you are interested. There will be another “Learn to Play Hockey” class beginning soon. Coming up we have the X-terra Off-Road Triathlon Competition at Oak Mountain State Park on the 16th of May and the Bump & Grind Mountain Bike Races the last weekend in May. In closing, congratulations to Pelham resident and PHS graduate Elliot Spiller who was elected President of the University of Alabama Student Government Association. It’s a great day to be a Panther. I’ll see you around town.

FROM COUNCILMAN SCOTT A straightforward discussion about Sunday Sales: With very little fanfare, the Alabama Legislature last month passed legislation that will allow voters of Shelby County to vote on legal alcohol sales on Sundays. The vote on Sunday alcohol sales in Shelby County will take place in March of 2016. The legislation mirrors to a large degree the regulation now found in Jefferson County with a 12 noon start time and other similar language. It is time to start an honest discussion in Pelham and throughout Shelby County about how the lack of Sunday alcohol sales is having a negative impact on our community and the county. Each Sunday, residents of Shelby County drive to multiple locations in Jefferson County to play golf, eat at restaurants, see sporting events and purchase groceries due in large part (in my view and that of many others), to the availability of adult beverages that can be purchased. The net effect of this Sunday migration north is the loss of thousands of dollars in tax revenue that could be

going into the coffers of Pelham, Shelby County and our local public school systems. There will soon be academic studies commissioned that will show exactly how much money is lost each year due to our lack of Sunday sales. I am certain that the amount is large, and I believe that you will be taken aback by the amount of tax income that is lost to us each year. Years ago, some Sunday alcohol sales were allowed in the county under a state license that allowed “Club” sales. The ABC Board decided to eliminate this type of license some time ago but grandfathered in those few restaurants that held a “Club” license. The result is that only a few restaurants can serve on Sunday which is, in my opinion, a bit disingenuous and favors a small number of municipalities. A vote to allow Sunday sales by all vendors holding an ABC alcohol license will correct this archaic type of alcohol sales regulation. Let’s focus in on what this vote and its passage could mean to Pelham financially. By allowing Sunday sales the city

will see an increase in tax revenue allowing the expansion of city services and the ability to cover rising costs associated with running a municipality. The Pelham City School System would see increased revenue due to the one cent education tax. This would be additional money to enhance educational offerings in all of our schools. The purchase of new teaching equipment, professional development for all employees and facility enhancements are other potential benefits. Our municipal golf course is one of the finest courses found in the Birmingham area. We are in competition with other courses in area for players and rounds of golf. Every Sunday, the Ballantrae Golf Course is excluded from consideration by many golfers due to the inability to purchase a beer while enjoying a round of golf. How many rounds of golf and how much income associated with it do we

lose each year? We may never know the actual number, but it is substantial and income we can no longer afford to lose. Our Pelham Civic Complex is one of the finest facilities in the metro area. We are fortunate to host a wide variety of events each year, but if you speak with the staff at the complex, they will verify that we lose out on the ability to host many events due to the lack of Sunday sales. Over the last two years, I have had the opportunity to speak with owners and representatives of numerous restaurant operations that have had an interest in locating in Pelham. Representatives of the city have reached out to multiple types of businesses seeking to get them to locate in Pelham. These are restaurants and businesses that the citizens of Pelham have Continued on page 7

FROM PELHAM CITY SCHOOLS’ SUPERINTENDENT DR. COEFIELD

I am a strong believer that no city can be great without having a great public school system. So that is our challenge – to build a great school system and we began that quest with the 2014-2015 academic year being the first year for Pelham City Schools as an independent school district. It is an exciting time filled with many challenges. The first few years are critical, because we know building a strong foundation will allow opportunities for future success. In 2014-2015, we have begun building that foundation with the development of a strategic plan. This plan is rooted in the premise that certain essential items must be done well in order for us to have a great system. Those essentials include having safe and disciplined schools, great teachers and administrators, a rigorous curriculum, 21st century technology, exciting extracurricular programs, adequate staffing to support provided services, clean and adequate facilities, community support, and proper planning that will sustain continuous improvement. Here is a quick outline of actions and board-approved agenda items within each one of those essential strands, all taking place just in the second semester of this school year (since January of 2015).

Safety • Approved purchase of 20 new school buses, all with the latest bus safety features (and air conditioning too!). • Expand partnerships with our local officials to improve equipment related to communications and surveillance. Great teachers • Approved a system-wide, comprehensive administrative and teacher professional development for the months of June and July. The only summer days where there are no training involving Pelham City teachers are July 2 and 3. A rigorous curriculum • Approved a new course selection guide for Pelham High School. Parents have attended orientation meetings and 8th grade students have started developing their 4 year academic plans. There is great excitement with the introduction of our new college and career academies. Technology • In the 2014-2015 school year, we upgraded or replaced over 400 outdated devices and have worked to upgrade our existing infrastructure, including installing new wired and wireless networks to provide the foundation to support for future growth. • During the 2015-2016 school year, we will put hundreds of new devices into the hands of our teachers and students that did not exist prior to becoming Pelham City Schools. We will also provide our students and

6 PelhamOnline.com / Late Spring 2015

teachers with new resources that will benefit learning as we transition to a 21st century digital environment. Extracurricular programs • Discontinued the practice of parents raising money to pay for coaching supplements and facilities to support the band and athletics. The board has assumed those costs, and parent fundraising is now going to reduce the participation cost of our students. • Approved expenditures to help with the infrastructure of many extra-curricular programs, including the purchasing of band equipment and renovations, kilns for our elementary art programs, summer renovations to our auditorium, and an allocation of funds to support athletic programs. Staffing • Adjusted staffing numbers as we continue to strive for the most efficient models that provide the needed services required to support students. Facilities • Pelham High renovation to be completed by 2015-2016 include the following: renovations to the gym, auditorium, and reinforced stadium seating required based upon structural analysis. By 2016-2017 renovations will expand to include academic labs to include science labs, biomedical labs, and other academy features to begin operation with students in 2016-2017. • Construction beginning at Pelham Ridge Elementary (that’s the name approved at April board meeting) with the school to open in 2016-2017. The board approved Pelham Oaks as the

new name for our other K-5 school to open in 2016-2017 (currently Valley Intermediate). Pelham Park Middle School will open in 2017-2018. Community Support • We see communications as an area of needed improvement. The staff is being re-organized in year 2 to make sure that we have the proper internal and external communications so all our stakeholders are properly informed. Planning • Administered and collected teacher surveys to gain feedback and insight. • Completed peer reviews by principals and central office administration to ensure that we have an appropriate level of lateral accountability. • Developed model budgets so the school board can have a clear understanding of our goals and the costs associated with achieving those goals. These items are just current examples of our desire to achieve at a high level of success. We see these nine essential strands as our commitment to this community. We know that great things will happen when we build a great plan and hold ourselves accountable for executing the plan. That work has started and is on-going. We plan to finalize our strategic planning document in 2016-2017 and it will get revisited and revised each year with board approval. We look forward to the work and we are excited about our future. Sincerely,

Scott

Scott Coefield, Ed. D. Superintendent Pelham City Schools

Naming Pelham City Schools In a Pelham Board of Education meeting in April, the board approved new names for Pelham City Schools' elementary and middle schools as another way to bring the community closer together. “We allowed our teachers at the elementary schools to submit some suggestions, and theirs were better than ours,” said Pelham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Coefield, laughing. Pelham Ridge Elementary is the name of the new elementary school under construction on on Applegate Parkway off Highway 52, which will open for the 20162017 school year. The PBOE

awarded a bid of $19,111,763 to Argo Construction Company for its construction during the same meeting. Pelham Oaks Elementary will be the new name for what is now Valley Intermediate School after it is converted from a 3rd-5th grade school to a kindergarten-5th grade school, which will happen by 2016. Pelham Park Middle School is the name of the school that will be constructed on land in Pelham City Park, adjacent to Belle Vista Mobile Home Park, which will open

requested that we recruit, and they would be enjoyed by all of our residents. The number one reason that so many of these concerns reject Pelham is the lack of Sunday sales. I have lost count of the number of recruitment efforts that have ended with this statement… “Contact us in the future if you ever get Sunday sales of alcohol.” In my mind the issue of Sunday sales of alcohol in Shelby County is an economic one. Nothing more, nothing less than a question of are we comfortable in continuing to help finance the cities and

the 2017-2018 school year. “I think those are great names

and will serve us well,” said PBOE President Rick Rhoades.

Pelham Senior Center expansion finally underway The Pelham Senior Center finally broke ground to expand its main room May 7 after more than eighteen months of planning and working with contractors and Construction Manager Brad Davis to get it just right. After nine years serving the residents of Pelham, its programs have grown so much that the facilities are no longer big enough to accommodate that level of participation. “When it was built nearly a decade ago, we thought it was as much room as we would ever need,” said Pelham Senior Center Director Barbara Roberts. When she first took over as director, before the center was built, there were only about 15 participants. At the time of construction, around 90 were active. Now, she estimates around 300 seniors participate in various daily activities. "It

has grown tremendously in this time," Barbara said. A book club, Tai Chi, art classes, Wii bowling, guest speakers, bingo, music, bridge, and other programs are offered at the Senior Center daily. Monthly Friday night dances have become increasingly popular, and are one of the big reasons for expanding the main room—to allow for a bigger dance floor. The other biggest draw to the facilities are the annual holiday luncheons, which are also held in the main room. Barbara describes tables laden with Thanksgiving or Christmas staples, surrounded by eager faces, set out in the hall and overflowing into adjacent rooms. The chosen plan adds a little over 1,000 square feet to the room, almost doubling its size. The walls of the main room will

hoever said, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life,” must have known Dr. Priscila Denny, orthodontist and owner of Oak Mountain Orthodontics. If anyone ever loved a job, Denny loves hers, and “work” is the last word she uses to describe it. For her, it’s mostly about relationships and helping others. “When we can help people feel confident about their smile, that’s really big,” she said. Denny cites the example of a 13-yearold patient who barely spoke when she

first came to the clinic. Whenever the girl did speak, she put her hand over her mouth to hide it. “After six to eight months of treatment, she had stopped covering her mouth, and her whole face would light up when she smiled,” said Denny. “By the end of treatment, she had undergone a huge change. Something like that is very rewarding. While Denny’s patients range in age from children to adults, she feels that teens probably benefit the most from orthodontics. “That’s usually when they become more

aware of how their teeth look,” she said, “and improving their smile helps them not to be so intimidated by the changes teens are going through.” And Denny should know. Not only did she wear braces herself as a youngster, but all her life she’s seen how orthodontics can affect people and their smiles for the better. A Brazilian by birth, Denny comes from a family of dentists, including several orthodontists. In fact, her mother and aunt are orthodontists, serving as the best role models Denny could have ever wished for. “If I had stayed in Brazil, it would have been easier,” she said. “My family is known for dentistry there, and everything would have been laid out for me to practice after I finished school.” Instead, Denny met her future husband during a visit to Birmingham in 1994, and within a year she had married, moved to Alabama and enrolled at UAB. It took a decade for her to complete the education required for her specialty and establish Oak Mountain Orthodontics, but she did it. And she’s understandably proud of all she’s accomplished. “It was long, hard path, a 10-year journey, but it was worth it,” said the busy mother of two daughters. “And I always knew it was possible.” Oak Mountain Orthodontics, with offices in Pelham and Helena, offers full orthodontic care in a fun, comfortable environment. Dr. Denny was recently named Birmingham Parents’ Choice for Best Orthodontist for the second year in a row.

My daughter loves going every morning and can't wait to tell Ms. Haley stories or show her something new every day. Thanks Noah’s Park!!!”

Former Deputy Chief Larry Palmer takes over as Pelham Police Chief A year ago, Larry Palmer became the first Deputy Chief of the Pelham Police Department. Just a year later, he has taken the helm of Police Chief following the retirement of former Chief Tommy Thomas. "I'm real honored the department and the city have that confidence in me, that I can continue to build on the good reputation and success we have had in our department," Chief Palmer said. "I've been with this department for many years, and I'm tickled for this opportunity." "I'm from here. I've worked my way up through the ranks, I've sat in every chair in this department," Chief Palmer continued. "And at this point, I've hired almost everyone who works here, except a handful of dinosaurs who started with me, and that just adds to the sense of

community." And that sums up what the new chief wants to promote: community. An informed community who works with its law enforcement officers to promote safety and openness in Pelham. "Every morning, I pray for me, I pray for my family, and I pray for my community," asserted Chief Palmer. "I need your help as engaged witnesses—but if you or your business is unfortunate enough to be robbed, do not confront the robber, do not try to be a hero; we do not want you to get hurt." Plans underway include looking into a new radio system, computers, a fingerprint database, the hiring of new personnel, several promotions over the next few months, and a long, hard look at the

department's five-year-plan. New body cameras should be on all officers by the end of May, to help breach the gap occurring between police and their public across the country. "The tensions, violence and riots across the country concern me," Chief Palmer said, quick to say there are no problems of that sort in Pelham. "We will always

strive for excellence and reach out to the community to buy into our program to help us." "We have a real good group of guys," he continued. "Our greatest tool is our officers. Trained, quality guys who take care of our citizens. They respect me, and I respect them. They work real hard. I'm excited to see how well we work together."

Remembering Fire Chief Oliver Ray Oliver C. Ray, Pelham’s last volunteer Fire Chief and father of current Fire Chief Danny Ray, passed away last month at the age of 84 after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. The funeral was held at Pelham Church of God. “My family grew up next door to the Jowers’, so Phillip, Robert (Bo) and I were around when our fathers got together to organize the “Pelham Fire Department” in the area in 1965,” Chief Ray began. “It was only about a dozen or so men, all volunteers, who lived in the area where City Hall is now.” At that time, the building served as the only Pelham School. When it was transformed into city hall, city leaders gave the “north” end of the building to the fledgling fire department as their first home, complete with a bay they cut out of the existing building. “The first big question was, ‘where will we get our first fire truck?’ and I don’t think anyone expected the answer to be Jack’s Hamburgers,” Chief Ray said, laughing. Jack Caddell, who lived in Homewood and started the fast food company in 1960, had an old fire truck that he used for advertising at the Jack’s in front of Shelby County Baptist Hospital, where Arby’s is now. He donated the truck to the volunteer fire department in 1965. Under the direction of Roy Jowers, Pelham’s first fire chief, the

truck was retrofitted with a water tank and pump, but not before Danny and some of the other firefighters’ kids got to ride around on the flatbed. The following year, the city was able to purchase a new Howe fire truck for only $10,840, compared to $800,000+ for the new quint truck purchased in 2014. “The biggest way the department affected our lives at first was the fact that the after-hours emergency number came to our house,” Chief Ray described. “When it began to ring, outside my parents’ bedroom, I’d run to get ready too.” He recalls going on many runs with the volunteer guys, including a lot of calls to the houses of people he knew. “We got a call one Christmas Eve when I was 14, and I remember glancing at my Christmas presents on the way out the door,” he said. “It was a house fire at Wooddale Lane in Indian Hills, and I got to pump the water for the very first time. They let me ride back in one of the compartments on the side of the truck because it was warmer.” In 1972, when Roy Jowers was elected to the Pelham City Council, O.C. Ray became the new fire chief, and served in the role until 1977. Still just a boy, Danny and a few of his friends went to Chief Ray and Assistant Chief Tom Davis that year with the idea of starting a Junior Firefighters program, a precursor to the Fire Explorers program they have now. “I stayed in that program through high school,” Chief Ray said. “My father’s example of serving his

community is where the roots of my desire began to serve the Pelham community.” It comes as no surprise that the former chief was proud of his son. “My dad always introduced me as a ‘firefighter from Pelham who is finishing what I started,’” Chief Ray described. A few of his proudest moments are associated with his father and the Pelham Fire Department. When Mayor Waters–Fire Chief Waters at the time–named Danny EMS Division Chief, his father was there to pin on his badge. He came to the dedication of the new Station

One in 1996. Again on March 23, 2009, the former Chief Ray was present to pin the Pelham Fire Chief’s badge on the new Chief Ray. “My son, Corey Ray, asked to take that badge with him to Iraq in 2011,” Chief Ray said proudly. “I’m so glad he brought it back, with himself safe.” The current chief still has his father’s badge, but pinned his first badge onto his father during the funeral proceedings. “I know my dad was just as proud of me as I am of him, and that extends to my son as well,” Chief Ray concluded.

We are pleased to announce that Rena C. Lewis, O.D., has joined our staff. Dr. Rena Lewis remembers moving to Birmingham from Simsbury, Connecticut at the age of seventeen and loving the area immediately. “I am not a fan of the cold weather,” she laughed. In fact, her parents and all of her siblings, except one, still reside here. “As a young adult, I knew that I wanted to enter a health care profession, but I was not certain of y direction. My dad was on faculty at the UAB School of Dentistry. He helped me arrange a college internship at the UAB School of Optometry, and it was ‘love at first sight.’” While in optometry school, Dr. Lewis decided that she wanted to pursue a specialty in pediatric optometry. Her dilemma at that time: UAB did not offer a residency in pediatric optometry, although there was a strong residency program in place for other specialties. “I decided to approach the pediatric faculty, and with their support, I was the first optometrist to complete a pediatric residency at my alma mater,” she explained. Dr. Lewis loves helping children because they have their entire lives ahead of them and visual problems can impact their entire lives, including learning socialization, school performance and behavior. “I am so touched by every child who hugs me, draws me a picture, or says ‘thank you for fixing my eyes.’” Dr. Meyer feels very proud for helping thousands of patients enjoy better vision and healthier eyes for almost three decades. Our mission is to deliver superior medical eye care for patients of all ages in a family-oriented environment. Be assured, staff will take the time to address your questions and concerns. AllSouth Appliance Group partners with Wellborn Cabinets Brings new level of home customization through new remodeling service Tyler Hillman is a local resident and co-owner and founder of AllSouth Appliance Group with his brother Josh. AllSouth has become known for not only its large selection of appliances you can see for yourself in their beautiful showroom, but for offering a full customer service package. After purchasing an appliance through AllSouth, the company will work with your contractors and electricians to make sure the installation is done correctly so you get the most out of your purchase. Now, after spending years shaping the appliance business in this area with innovations like this, the brothers are at it again with another new service: kitchen remodeling and design. “This is growth on the part of the company to add to our total appliance package,” Tyler explained. “We have partnered with Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. out of Ashland, Alabama, to furnish the cabinets we sell with our appliances because Wellborn is a local, family-run company like us. They have good values and a quality product.” Top: Kitchen designer Lynne McWhorter and Veteran kitchen designer Lynne AllSouth owner Tyler Hillman in one of the LivMcWhorter has been designing since ing Kitchen displays in the AllSouth showroom. 1993 and been involved with the Bottom: Lynne with the Alabama built Wellborn National Kitchen and Bath Association Cabinet Display, a new offering from AllSouth. (NKBA) since 1995. She is happy to

lead the Wellborn Cabinets and Kitchen Design projects for AllSouth, and she is passionate about her products and her displays. At least two of the kitchen displays in the AllSouth showroom are “live areas,” meaning the kitchens ate fully functional. For a few months now, AllSouth has hosted one public event per month after-hours at one of these live areas in its showroom. “We talk about trends in the industry, sometimes have appliance representatives give a presentation with a slideshow, and we always have food,” Lynne said. (For more information about these events, please visit the AllSouth Appliance page on Facebook.) Lynne also talked about the Living Kitchen displays, “Not just any showroom gets a Living Kitchen from appliance manufacturers like SubZero and Wolf.” AllSouth had to keep theirs consistently professional, clean and organized to receive these displays, which shows just how much pride these guys at AllSouth take in their work. Partnering with Wellborn shows another level of dedication because of the levels of customization they allow with their cabinets. With Traditional, Inset, Garage and Bath lines to choose from,

plus their Color Inspire Program (which includes not only paint and staining, but glazes, too), a myriad of handles and visual styles—Wellborn has a cabinet style for you. And yet they go a step further— can’t find one you like? Design your own custom cabinet with their “You Draw It” program, and if the engineers can build it, they will. Using 20-20 Design software, after obtaining the measurements of your kitchen, Lynne will show you what your new kitchen can look like in 3D, so you can really visualize it. The current AllSouth location on Oxmoor Road will be closing near the end of July, when the business makes a big move to Lakeshore into the old Babies“R”Us building. “That location has around 30,000 square feet of showroom and warehouse, giving us around three times the current amount of space we have,”Tyler explained. This will allow AllSouth to display more full kitchen designs by Lynne, and expand the design area to include projectors. If you’re in the need of something new in the kitchen, give the folks at AllSouth a call today!

Youth Government Day 2015 proves just how smart Pelham kids are The annual Youth Government Day, where fifth graders from Valley Intermediate School learn about local government, was held May 4. While the majority of the students toured city facilities, a group elected by their peers to city leadership positions shadowed their respective city leaders and learned the specifics of the positions they held for the day. The students’ City Council consisted of Council President Nico Ramos, along with Avery Fuller, Brian Benevides, Shay Walsh and Austin Wallace. Marvin Ornelas was the student mayor. Other student leaders were: Julia Marshall, director of public works; Citlaly Roman, finance director; Randy Martinez, G.I.S. (Geospatial Information Systems); Cristian Matias and Nicholas Higdon, I.T. directors; Heather Sides, library director; Grayson Reid, parks and recreation director; Zariah PurdieLarkin, risk management; Ashlee Mann, school board president; Chloe Plummer, superintendent of Pelham City Schools; Jonathan Pena, president of the Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce; Ayman Mozeb, chief of police; Catharine Hartley, court clerk; Noelle Smith, Pelham Civic Complex director; Zoe Slaughter, fire marshal; Jordan Holloway, fire chief; Cody Bethers, city engineer; William Lankford, city clerk; Jennifer Hernandez, building official; and Jake Domino, director of golf at Ballantrae Golf Club.

The young student council sincerely surprised city leaders with how in-tune the students’ resolutions were with “pet projects” of the city itself. They want to lower the speed limit through the Tree Tunnel; redevelop Pelham City Park with additional practice/ game fields and a dog park; order a study investigating how to make more time for music, arts, PE and computer/technology labs in school; and support the expansion of Hwy 52, with the addition of a flyover to lessen traffic and train issues—including public safety. The students also wish to have the 3-4th grade school lock-in reinstated and expanded to the entire class, as well as bring back the international bread festival so that students can learn about other cultures and enjoy delicious food. “We are always impressed by how smart they are,” remarked Councilwoman Beth McMillan. “You can tell our future is in bright hands,”agreed Councilman Maurice Mercer. “It is always enlightening to see what they know and pay attention to,” concluded Council President Rick Hayes.

Kionna Miller signs letter of intent to Spring Hill College for track The Pelham High School track team is excited to announce senior Kionna Miller signed a track scholarship to Spring Hill College this coming fall. “On behalf of Pelham athletics, congratulations to Kionna,” said PHS Athletic Director Kim Kiel. “This is such a wonderful opportunity for her after she has represented Pelham so well.” PHS Track Coah Argo agreed. “On our team, she has been the mediator to get us to work together, and we’re going to miss her,” the coach said. “We are proud of all she’s done here and I know she will have continued success at Spring Hill College.” Kionna had a great freshman season at PHS before an injury put her out, but came back stronger than ever in her junior and senior years. “She’s been a really hard worker and developed

into a strong runner over the years, so I’m very glad to see her continue in college,” said Track Coach Springfield. “I thank coaches Argo and Springfield for helping me improve this year and for pushing me to continue running in college,” Kionna said. “I also thank my parents for sticking with me and helping me, and my team for getting me this far.” It was her team’s hard work in the State Track and Field Championship in the 4x400 that helped Pelham win the state championship, coach Argo explained. During the indoor track season, Kionna runs 60-meter dashes as well as 4x200 and 4x400 relays. In the outdoor season, she competes in the 4x100 relay as well as the 100 and 200-meter sprints. When representatives from Spring Hill College visited PHS, Open Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm Emergency Svc. Avail.

things really clicked for Kionna. “I really liked their morals, and the academic scholarship they offered me solidified my decision,” she said, explaining that her grades are equally important to her as track. She plans on running throughout her college career, while studying psychology and business. Her plans after? “We’ll see!” “She has always been outgoing

and outspoken, she is a person of leadership,” her mother Mrs. Miller said. “While we don’t want her to leave and go to Mobile, we are happy she is pursuing her passions.” Close family friend and Christian Rap artist Alreddy Reddy said, “Kionna will do all things through Christ who strengthens her.” Congratulations, Kionna!

Moregan Sharp signs letter of intent to Mississippi College for football Football is the sport Moregan Sharp has loved to play since he was six years old, and it led to a fantastic career at RMS and PHS. To cap it all off, he signed a letter of intent to play for Mississippi College starting this coming fall. “I thank God for the opportunity to play football at Mississippi College and also get a great education there,” he said. The school’s beautiful campus was a big factor in his decision, but getting a great education there is top priority. “I want to get my degree in physical education, and MS college has a great atmosphere,” Moregan said. His career plans have him working up from high school PE teacher to football coach and head coach. “My coaches have always influenced me greatly, some even became father figures to me,” Moregan said, indicating he wanted to have the same effect on the lives of his future players.

“Playing on these great teams at PHS under their direction was amazing—it’s been something I’ll never forget.” Former PHS Head Football Coach Brett Burnett cited 1800 yards rushing, 2400 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns through Moregan’s PHS football career. “He did whatever you asked him to do, consistently throughout his career, so it’s no wonder he’s one of the most played athletes in PHS football history,” the coach said. In addition to thanking all of his coaches throughout the years, Moregan also thanked his aunt and uncle for support, said he has the best grandparents for coming to his games whenever they could, and gave special thanks to the #1 lady in his life—his mom, Parys. When Moregan was in kindergarten, Parys said he would watch SportsCenter–she figured he just liked the music. But one day, he came up to her and said,

GRADY’S

“Mom, do you know why I watch SportsCenter? It catches me up on what I’ve missed during the day.” This avid love for sports has continued to grow. In the past decade of football, Moregan has played just about every position except the line: quarterback, corner back, offensive back, wide receiver, the list goes on. “Coach Burnett always wanted 100% from me in every position I played, but he made sure I stayed focused on school work,” Moregan said. “I really want to thank Coach Burnett and Coach Rhoades for giving me the chance to play on

the varsity team.” “I want to thank my teammates for being there for me through my high school career,” he said, giving “shout-outs” to the cheerleaders, band, student sections and Panther Nation for supporting the school’s many sports teams. “Moregan’s a great kid and a tremendous football player. But as good of a player as he is, he’s that much better of a young man. He has tremendous character, and that will translate into a tremendous future,” concluded Coach Burnett. “He’ll do great things at Mississippi College.” Congratulations, Moregan!

Pelham Racquet Club hosts 11th annual Women’s $2500 Challenger, Anhelina Kalinina is 2015 champion Laura Siegemund was the 2014 PRC Legacy Credit Union Women’s $2500 Challenger singles champion and ranked #154 in the world prior to this year’s challenger. Having competed in this event for the past 6?? years running, she has built up quite a local following who come out en force for support at her matches. She began this year’s tournament as the #2 seed. However, it was Anhelina Kalinina, an 18-year-old tennis champion from the Ukraine, who pulled a big upset at the Racquet Club’s annual tournament. In the first round of the tournament, she took out #7 seed Xinyun Han. Next, in the semifinals, she beat out #1 seed Lin Zhu—who was ranked #111 in the world prior to the tournament. “Last year, I lost the first round and was out. It

was a very short tournament,” Anhelina said. “I spent the year working on my mental preparedness as well as physical training.” The final match for the challenger this year pitted Anhelina against Laura, who had just come from a successful quarterfinal match against #5 seed Miharu Imanshi and semifinal match against #3 seed Johanna Konta. In a heated final battle, game and set leads went back and forth between the two formidable athletes. Anhelina’s hard work this past year paid off, as by the end, she came out on top with a final score of 6-3, 7-5. With this tourney under wraps, Anhelina, who has played tennis since she was five years old, went home for a brief rest before heading back out for another international

completely. Crowds on Sunday, April 19 for the singles semifinals and finals were good, despite the still-overcast weather. Commercial Beautification Award Iberia Bank Iberia Bank at 2695 Pelham Parkway is the recipient of this edition of the Commercial Beautification Award. “Iberia Bank has a 128-year history since beginning in New Iberia, Louisiana. We have grown from three locations to nine in this area and opened in Pelham (the only branch in Shelby County) in 2009,” said vice president and branch manager, Debra Parrott. “We are proud to be in Pelham and as employees and corporately, we are always looking to be involved in the community.” Coming in May is one of Parrott’s favorite annual events, an Art Showing by the art students of Valley Elementary

and Thompson Middle Schools. The reception will be May 12 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. “Iberia Bank’s spring Art Show is by far the most enjoyable event I do. We have about 80 works hanging throughout the bank. It’s incredible how talented these students are and how proud they and their families are to see their art displayed here.” Also a member of the Pelham Library Guild and Rotary Club, Parrott looks forward to the upcoming Taste of Pelham on August 25, of which Iberia Bank is always a sponsor. “We are a large bank with a small community feel,” Parrott added. “We want to be your bank, no matter what your business may be.”

Residential Beautification Award—109 Royal Chase Drive Stroll through the yard of Mark and Cindy Maloof and you will come away a fan of the Bloodgood Japanese Maple. These eye-catching, gently cascading beauties provide color during three seasons. The Maloofs have fashioned their landscape 360 degrees around their home over the years. They recently added new decking that overlooks the back yard (and rear wooded area) and built a stone retaining wall that shores up a sunny hillside where a vegetable garden is planned. The path that leads off the

left side of the yard is lined with Magnolia Little Gem trees and Tea Olive shrubs. “The Tea Olives have glossy leaves and small white blooms with the most wonderful fragrance in spring and fall,” Mark says. “They are dense and evergreen, relatively disease free and long lived.” In both the backyard and front central bed are native redbuds, Oak Leaf Hydrangeas and dogwoods transplanted from the woods behind their home. They recently replaced the older dogwood in the bed nearest the mailbox and added marigolds and petunias for color. The central liriopelined bed near the house contains

azaleas and peonies that are now blooming. Cindy transplanted the pink peonies from her mother’s yard. New pops of color will emerge soon in the cannas and daylilies. In the small, sunnier bed along the driveway, Knock-Out roses are already in full bloom. Both beds also contain clusters of Asiatic Lilies, but their elegant blooms were lost during the recent heavy rains. Their Oriental Lilies will flower later in the summer.

“At one time I was the main gardener and plant caretaker,” Cindy said, “but due to the demands of my work, that has mainly fallen to Mark now.” Cindy is a nurse at Shelby Baptist Hospital and Mark Maloof owns System Green Landscape (Commercial Landscape Irrigation and Maintenance). With the help of their son, Adam, no plantings go unmulched, and these details add up to this inviting and wellmaintained yard.

Emilee Blue signs letter of intent to play soccer at LaGrange College Emilee Blue is only the second student under PHS Soccer Coach Brittany Pollard to receive an athletic scholarship to college. Just last month, the senior signed a letter of intent to play soccer at LaGrange College this coming fall. Emilee’s twin sister Elizabeth has also played soccer at PHS for the last four years, but she has chosen to attend UAB. Emilee and Elizabeth have two other siblings: Brittney, who plays golf, and Gregory, who plays soccer, football and runs track. “They’re running us ragged,” father Jason Blue said, laughing good-naturedly at Emilee’s signing. “But we love all our children and wish them the best.” Mom Marcy agreed. “We are very proud of them, especially Emilee and Elizabeth as they go to college,” she said. “We are so glad all Emilee’s soccer success has paid off.” Students, teachers, family and coaches gathered in the PHS

lunchroom for the occasion. “On behalf of PHS and the athletic department, we are proud of you and everything you have helped us achieve in the past four years,” said Athletic Director Kim Kiel. “Emily has made a huge impact on the program since her freshman year,” explained Coach Pollard. “She is a talented midfielder who sees the field well and will be an asset to LaGrange.” Emilee began playing soccer at age four in a local recreational league in South Carolina, where the Blues lived before moving to Pelham. She was coached by Ashley Kirk in the Georgia/ South Carolina Bulls Soccer Club while living there as well. Once the Blues moved to Alabama, she joined the Vestavia Soccer Club, where she furthered her experience under coach AJ Adcock. While at PHS, she played as a centermid, finding forwards and playing balls through the field to make plays

for the Lady Panthers. This fall, she is excited to be making plays for her new Panther team at LaGrange. “It’s a small campus, the classes are small, and I liked Coach Greg Wagoneer when we met,” Emilee said. The coach came to see her play and win with Pelham against Montevallo, as well as win with the Vestavia Soccer Club in Montgomery. “I’m looking forward to

making new friends in college,” the soccer player said. She plans to study physical therapy and exercise at LaGrange, which she wants to lead her into a sports medicine career working for a collegiate or professional team. “Emilee has a bright future ahead of her, and we look forward to seeing what all she does and the impact she has on the LaGrange team,” Coach Pollard concluded. Congratulations, Emilee!

You can tell by the smiles that this was another fun, family event that has become an annual tradition in Pelham. Thanks also to the city employees who pitched in to insure it all ran smoothly. And last but not least, to Peter Cottontail. No Easter Egg Hunt would be complete without an appearance by him. (Or was it her?)

Spring sport student-athletes soaring this season at PHS No one, save the coaches and players themselves, is more excited than PHS Athletic Director Kim Kiel about how much PHS spring sports have achieved this season. “Our coaches and student athletes have been working tirelessly to accomplish their goals,” she said. “Our athletic programs have been consistently supported throughout the year with attendance from our Superintendent, Board Members, Central Office staff & teachers.” The PHS Girls’ Outdoor Track has had a great season. The last week in April, they traveled down to participate in the State Track meet in Gulf Shores. Mary Grace Strozier, State Champion, took 1st place in the 600-meter run and 4th in the 3200 meter run. Melanie Taylor took 6th in the 100 meter hurdles. In the 300-meter hurdles, Jordan Allison took 3rd and Erin Hines took 5th. Erin also took 2nd in the 400-meter run, 4th in the long jump and 5th in the high jump.

Amelia Guthrie took 8th in the high jump. In the 800 meter run, Mary Grace Strozier took 3rd and Jordan Allison took 8th. Emorie Long took 8th in the javelin. In the pole Vault, Amelia Guthrie took third, Melanie Taylor took 4th and Alex Ladewig took 5th. The team of Katie Strozier, Lesya Lackey, Jordan Allison, Mary Grace Strozier took 2nd in the 4x800 relay. The team of Jordan Allison, Katie Strozier, Katie Grace Terry, Kiara Roper took 6th in the 4x400. These scores helped the team come home as 6A State Runner Ups! This is just a cap on top of great meets throughout the year and their #1 win at the Indoor State Championship back in January. Boys’ Soccer hosted the first two rounds of the state playoffs on the PHS campus. They defeated John Carroll 2-1 in the first round. They defeated Homewood in the second round 1-0 in double overtime. The third round was played at

Southside High School and they won 3-0 to advance to the final four in Huntsville Friday, May 8 at 11:00am. If they win that game, the Championship game is Saturday, May 9 at 10:00am. Neither of these games had been played at press time. “This is the first time in school history that our soccer program has advanced this far,” said Coach Kiel. Panthers Baseball hosted the first round of playoffs vs McAdory at PHS and beat them in both games, 8-0 and 13-0. Then, the team traveled to Northridge Tuscaloosa for the second round and beat them in both games, too, 6-0 and 6-5. For the third round vs Hillcrest, it was back to PHS, where the

Panthers continued their streak, beating the other team 4-1 and 5-0. These wins advanced the team to the semifinals, held Friday, May 7 at 4:30 and 7:00pm at PHS, but the games had not yet happened at press time. Lady Panthers Softball placed 2nd in the Area Tournament and also advanced to State Regionals Friday, May 7 in Troy, playing Hillcrest at 2:30. If they won the first round, they played at 6pm Friday, if they lost, they played at 7:30pm. These games also had not occurred at press time. “It has been exciting to witness the students and other athletic teams supporting each other during these playoffs,” Coach Kiel said. “We are a Pelham family!”

Former Panthers take in a game.

The PHS baseball and softball teams are enjoying another successful run in 2015. As this goes to press, both are still vying for state titles. Our best wishes to them both. Go Panthers!

PHS student Danielle Sanders’ essay in top 12 for national contest It all started with an argumentative paper for Danielle Sanders’ English class with Mrs. Connie Nolan, who ‘strongly suggested’ that they write their papers about ‘something important.’ “Then, she told us about this essay contest for the 50th Anniversary of the March to Selma, put on by the National Liberty Museum, and while I was interested, I didn’t think I would have enough time to get all of my thoughts in order,” Danielle said. She had just seen the movie Selma, and while Mrs. Nolan read the prompt 46 PelhamOnline.com / Late Spring 2015

for the essay, she could see pivotal scenes from the movie playing out in her head. Thankfully, the contest entry date was pushed back, giving her enough time to re-work her paper for class into the essay she knew it could be. “Mrs. Nolan kept talking to me about it, and working with me, and she told me, ‘I feel like it needs more you in it,’ and that really stuck with me,” Danielle said. “I went back to the writings of MLK we had just been studying in class. I could hear him saying them—I took his perspective and looked back at what I had written and what I wanted to say,” Danielle explained. Teachers who read the essay told her, ‘I can hear both yours and Dr. Martin Luther

King’s voices when I read the first line,” praise which gives her goosebumps. The essays that came in were so good that the National Liberty Museum team couldn’t narrow them down to a top ten–opting instead for a top twelve, one of which is Danielle’s essay. It was even tougher than that: in the top three, two tied for first place! All winners in the top twelve will receive $500, plus $300 for their school, both of which Danielle is very excited about, but not as excited as she is about her essay. “We learn history so that we don’t repeat ourselves,” she said. “Education is something that is able to get us the knowledge we need to get through life, which is why I talked about it in my essay.”

Nathan Collins takes over Riverchase Middle School football program Riverchase Middle School athletics are sad to announce Head Football Coach Al Godwin will retire at the end of this school year. “Coach Godwin has been a great staple at RMS sports programs, and he will be missed,” said Pelham City Schools Athletic Director Kim Kiel. “I’m sad to see him go,” agreed Principal Susan Hyatt. But with change comes new possibilities. Offensive Coach Nathan Collins, who has taught 8th grade world history and coached at RMS for 11 years now, takes over the position starting this summer. “Coach Godwin is just passing on the whistle, he’s already got a good thing going on here at Riverchase,” Coach Collins said. “I leave the program in good hands, and I know he will do a great job,” said Coach Godwin. “Coach Collins had proven himself to be a pivotal part of our program,” Principal

Hyatt said. Coach Kiel agreed, “He is very deserving, and will do a good job with your sons.” Coach Collins has been Head Baseball Coach, Head Wrestling Coach, Track Coach and Assistant Football Coach at RMS in his tenure. “If they’ve got a sport here, I’ve taught it,” he laughed. “It’s been a pleasure and a blessing so far.”A Thorsby native, Coach Collins joined the United States Marine Corps after Coach Al Godwin, left, poses with Coach Nathan Collins on the field, they will be better But the coach himself said he high school and proudly in the halls, in class, at home,” will make himself available to served in Washington D.C.; Coach Collins said. “That said, students and parents. “I’m very Camp Lejeune, NC; Okinawa, we’re gonna win.
