FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings all! Summer is almost done, and what a great summer it was! I hope you all had a chance to enjoy many of the great events from First Fridays and the July Fireworks Show to Market Days and Jazz in the Park this summer. It was certainly one to remember. I want to personally thank all the wonderful volunteers that help make Helena great! There are many unsung heroes in this community who volunteer their time on committees for various events and the many labor intensive projects that take place all around town. There are so many hard working volunteers that I fear some may occasionally feel overlooked or under appreciated. Rest assured you are not forgotten—I truly appreciate you all! As we transition to the fall and with the start of a new school year, I would like to thank you all for your attention to safety as you drive to and from our schools. Your patience during these heavy traffic times is appreciated and insures everyone stays safe. Our public safety officers work hard to keep traffic flowing safely—I certainly appreciate their efforts. In regards to road improvements, ALDOT is now in the engineering phase for the proposed improvement at the

Elementary School and 261 intersection. I am pushing this project as fast as possible with the engineers and ALDOT. I continue to negotiate a funding agreement to widen 261, and I am very hopeful to have an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) for funding with ALDOT and surrounding cities very soon.

I am very proud of the many improvements we have made and have proposed this year, and I am pleased to report that we will continue to make needed improvements in the coming budget year. I will continue to work closely with our City Council to make sure that we always use your tax dollars wisely with accountability and transparency. This budget year I will be introducing a new funding structure to the Council regarding new home construction permitting and inspection fees. After doing a survey of fees assessed to developers and builders in neighboring cities, we found that we were charging much less in permitting and inspection fees and realized we were experiencing a loss in this area. This proposal will increase inspection fees by approximately one thousand dollars, plus variances on fees for inspections which will still be a very reasonable permitting and inspection fee structure for new construction when compared to nearby cities. The added fees will ONLY apply to NEW home construction permits and inspections. This new fee structure will help make sure we are not losing revenue that goes toward funding the city inspection department and also insures that new home construc-

tion contributes funding toward current and future infrastructure needs, maintenance, road improvements and road construction. Again, this proposal only affects the builders/developers permitting fees on new home construction and does not impact currently occupied residential housing or its residents. I am presenting this proposal to the City Council in an upcoming September session. I am excited to see another year of football kick off in the city as our Helena High School Huskies welcome new Coach Richie Busby and staff this season. Coach Busby brings experience with great enthusiasm and energy to the program. I look forward to seeing the City Youth

League Football and other fall sports get under way at the City Park and Recreation Department as well. I am very pleased that we will be opening a brand new Soccer Field at the Sports Complex for City Youth League Soccer this month—it has been much needed. I can’t wait to see it in use! I hope you all have a great fall! I look forward to seeing you around town and under the lights at Husky football games on Friday nights! Kindest Regards,

Mark Mark R. Hall, Mayor

Senator Ward delivers for Helena again! At a July council meeting, Senator Cam Ward delivered a community development grant for $8,000 to the city for improvments to the Boundless Playground at Joe Tucker Park. “My thanks to Senator Ward for first of all finding these avaiable funds and then for helping secure them for us,” said the mayor. “Several pieces of equipent on the playground are due for replacement, and the money couldn’t come at a better time.”

Bo Bice back home in Old Town Helena with a new business— Premiere Instruments (and more!) “It’s a blessing to pass on a love for music and a passion for playing instruments and singing.” —Bo Bice Bo Bice has officially hung out his shingle on Main Street in Helena right next door to the Old Town Barber Shop. Premiere Instruments is the name, and from there, Bo is offering guitars, amps, recording sessions and lessons in both instruments and voice. He is also offering a Musician’s Master Class for those serious musicians and singer song writers looking to take their careers to the next level. “After Mary Chambliss talked to me about coming back to Helena and helping promote fund raising for Helena’s Miracle League, I noticed the little gray building that was vacant on Main Street, talked with it’s owner, Mr. Ward, and decided to open a music store, complete with a recording studio, and give guitar lessons,” said Bo. “It’s a blessing to pass on a love for music and a passion for playing instruments and singing.” Premiere Instruments has the feel of a museum, as Bo has memorabilia from his illustrious career hanging all over the walls—items from his American Idol Days are shown as well as “Gold Records on the wall,” to borrow a phrase from an old song. Bo has a Martin Guitar

given to him by the famous guitar maker on his 31st birthday, a Jim Croce model. There is also a press proof of the Time in a Bottle album by Croce, signed and presented to him by the late singer’s wife, Ingrid, with the words, “Bo, this was the beginning for Jim, now it’s your turn.” Visitors will find guitars signed by music legends such as the late Ian Evans, who became a family friend, and of Gary Rossington, both members of the iconic musical group, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the two who joined Bo on stage at the Old Town Amphitheater during his American Idol run. “We became such good friends with Ian that my wife and I named our middle son, Ian, in his honor. Currently, Bo said he is serving a varied mix of budding musicians and singers in his Helena studio. “We have 6-year-olds and one who’s almost 60, and every age in between,” said Bo. Instrument rental and repair is offered as well as sales of all types of instruments and musical equipment. Be sure to register for the Bo Bice Jam Camp coming up in October. Welcome home, Bo!

Jay and Shetal Modi— Thank you, Helena, for a great 20 years! Jay and his wife Shetal, and their kids Khushee and Krish have loved living in Helena! Jay said Helena feels like “ A city of good neighbors” which is why he chose to move here. Jay knew a lot of the city employees from Helena from when they’d come in to purchase technology gadgets from him when he worked for Office Depot in Hoover. Jay’s family bought what was then the Conoco station in 1998 and the rest, as they say, is history. Jay flipped the Conoco brand to Chevron in 2005, and then came a string of Modi additions to the business community, each of which Jay said was a need not being served at the time he opened them. In 2011, he opened “Top It Off,” the yogurt shop and in 2015, he opened “Wash It Off” to give Helena a first class, state-of-the-art drive-through car wash. Over the past few years, the Chevron station has become the King of craft beer sellers in town, offering craft draught beer by the gallon from their modest looking store front as well as a nice selection of IPAs and high gravity beer selections. Looking for a healthy meal alternative in Helena? It can be a challenge depending upon your needs as wants, but “Top-It-Off” has come up with an exciting new, healthful twist

with their vitamin packed Açaí Bowls. Filled with the antioxidant rich açaí fruit from Brazil, customers can choose from a variety of blends and toppings from coconut flakes and granola to fresh fruits, seeds and nuts to give you a complete “good-for-you” meal at close to 400600 calories. This writer just sampled one called “Summertime Happiness” that was made from an açaí base with big chunks of mango, banana and pineapple with granola, coconut flakes, chia seeds and honey that was out of this world! You finish feeling full but energized as opposed to feeling as if you could use a good nap. Stop in and try one soon! Jay said he and Shetal have been blessed by their ever-growing extended family (a term they refer to when speaking of their employees). “They all live right here in Helena, so they care as much about the town we serve as we do,” said Jay. Jay says he is currently looking for another “need” to fill here in town. My guess is that he will find it, and it will be a winner. “Helena is my town,” said Jay. Congratulations to the Modi family for a great 20 years, and here’s to the next 20 being just as successful as the Modi’s thriving business empire grows! Wash It Off Car Wash Brochure v5.indd 1

A/C dealing you fits? Call Helena’s own Brian Segars! Is your air conditioner dealing you fits during these last, hot, dog days of summer? Mine was too, cutting off after a few hours of running (my upstairs unit), so that when we were ready for bed, the temperature was in the 80s on the bedroom level, the unit wouldn’t turn back on, and we were relying on portable fans to sleep. One call to Jack Segars Heating and Air was all it took though to get us back to sleeping in the cool, air conditioned comfort to which we’ve become accustomed. Owner Brian Segars (the late Jack Segar’s son) came out, checked

a couple of gauges and immediately diagnosed my problem. It seems grass clippings had covered my outside cooling fins, and a simple removal of the outside case and a thorough rinse with water was all it needed. (And here I was thinking I was about to shell out major $$$!) Thanks Brian! If you are in need of trustworthy and reliable A/C service now, or as fall rolls around, heating service, call Helena’s own Brian or Wendy Segars at 205491-6363. They’ll appreciate the business, and you’ll appreciate dealing with these honest professionals who call Helena home!

Caleb Jones recognized for Eagle Project: renovation of nearby historical site Caleb Bennett Jones, a Boy Scout in Troop 532 of Helena, was recognized at a council meeting recently for his interesting and historically important Eagle Scout project—the restoration of the David Lindsay Historical Cemetery Site on Hwy 17 in nearby Maylene. The grave has been cleaned, a new aluminum fence has been erected and the treeline pushed back. What once was a practically invisible historic site is now restored. Caleb set up a Go Fund Me account to help with expenses. On the page, David Lindsay is described: “David Lindsay was a patriot during the American Revolution, and I think it is fitting that his final resting place be the best looking we can possibly provide for a man who fought for the United States of America.” Well said, Caleb, and thank you for a job well done! Trae Santos wins Frontier League Home Run Derby The Gateway Grizzlies first baseman, Helena’s Trae Santos hit 32 total home runs recently to win the 2018 Frontier League Home Run Derby at CarShield Field in O’Fallon, Missouri. Santos outslugged all participants over the first, second and third rounds. This narrowed down the eight Frontier League players to one representative, and Trae belted four homers in the final to beat former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher and outfielder Rick Ankiel. Santos, a former San Diego Padres minor leaguer who reached Double-A San Antonio in 2016, ranks sixth in the Frontier League with 16 home runs this season. He was the only Grizzly to appear

in each of Gateway’s 53 games prior to the All-Star Break. The native of Barrigada, Guam, was one of four Grizzlies selected to represent the organization Wednesday night in the Frontier League All-Star Game at CarShield Field. Starting pitcher Alec Kisena joined Santos on the Experienced team, while starting pitcher Max MacNabb and shortstop Artemis Kadkhodaian opposed them on the Rookies team.

ABOUT THE GATEWAY GRIZZLIES:

The Gateway Grizzlies are a professional baseball team, located just 10 minutes from downtown St. Louis. ABOUT THE FRONTIER LEAGUE: The Frontier League is a professional, independent baseball organization. Since its inception,

UAB Golden Girls team features two former Helena High School Dance Team members When you see the two brightest stars on the UAB Golden Girls’ squad this season and they look familiar to you, it’s because you just saw them performing at midfield of a Helena Husky football game a little over a year ago as members of the Husky Dance Team, Courtney as captain of the team her junior and senior years. Kennedy Lenz was born and raised in Helena. When the county began building a high school here, Kennedy and Courtney Zajic were freshmen at Pelham High. After that year, the brand new Helena High School opened, and both girls transferred home and became Huskies. Kennedy was selected Homecoming and Prom Queen her senior year in 2017. She is currently pursuing a degree in biology at UAB, where she attends on academic and athletic scholarships. She hopes to go to dental school after graduating.

Courtney Zajic was also born and raised in Helena. Like Kennedy, she graduated from Helena High in 2017 and now attends UAB on academic and athletic scholarships. Her major is nursing. “I haven’t yet decided what field I want to go into when I graduate though,” she said. As members of UAB’s Spirit Team, (which includes the Golden Girls, the cheerleaders and the mascots), the girls stay busy year round. The Golden Girls perform at football, basketball and volleyball games for the Blazers and make appearances at lots of UAB events throughout the year. Both say they wouldn’t trade anything for the days they spent growing up in Helena and will remain Huskies for life. Good luck to them both as they begin their sophomore year in college! Helena lady feels the call — Missy Narkates travels to Uganda and ministers to “Simone’s Kids” Helena resident, Missy Narkates, received what some would call the trip of a lifetime this summer. Simone Puccinelli, Founder and President of “Simone’s Kids,” planned to travel across the globe once again to God’s Hope School in Nakaseke, Uganda. While attending a ladies gathering, Simone felt led to invite Missy along on the journey. As they say, the Lord works in mysterious ways; things quickly fell into place, and the ladies were off to Uganda just five days later. “This trip and the way it all came about was nothing short of a miracle,” said Missy. “I fell in love with Simone’s Kids through Simone, and I was inspired by the care she showed for others. I knew God was directing my steps to Nakaseke, but I didn’t know when or how at first.” Simone’s Kids is a nonprofit organization that Simone began from her dorm room as a sophomore in college. After receiving word that a small school in Uganda was closing due to a lack of funding, Simone began raising the $500 needed to keep it open and has not slowed down. Since 2010, the school has grown from 46 students to over 1,000. God’s Hope School provides education, nutrition, housing, medical care and much more to children from three-years-of-age to graduation. “It was amazing to see the school in person and witness the growth that has taken place,” said Missy. “God’s Hope School was once a small, brick building with just a few teachers. The school has since grown into a full campus that includes its own medical clinic, farm and dormitories.” “I was touched to hear from students that shared what a difference this school has made in their lives. The obstacles that these children face day in and day out are unfathomable to me. Some are

orphaned, others are abandoned or poverty stricken. It was clear from each of them that Simone’s Kids was providing much needed love, hope and stability to those who otherwise would not be able to attend school at all,” Missy explained. Simone’s Kids is funded on donations alone. If you would like to sponsor a child, donate or find out more about God’s Hope School, please check out their website @ simoneskids.org.

Dr. Brittany Henry’s Old Town Dental opens across from Helena post office “I look forward to being an asset to the entire community.”

—Dr. Brittany Henry

There is a new family dentist in town with a smile as wide as the great outdoors. Brittany Henry, DDS, opened “Old Town Dental” this month in the building that formerly housed Abbas Dentistry. “Abbas Family Dentistry is being renamed Old Town Dental as soon as our new sign is ready,” said Dr Henry. “I discovered an opportunity here when I learned that Dr Abbas was moving to California,” “so I took it. I think it’s in an ideal location next to the elementary school, and I look forward to being an asset to the entire community.” Dr Henry grew up in a small, agricultural community in Nebraska and then attended

Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then spent a year working at a pediatric dental office in Fort Collins, Colorado, before dental school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. While attending Creighton Dental School, Dr. Henry met her husband, Gordon Henry. “He was a classmate of mine and grew up in Birmingham. In early May we moved to Birmingham to begin our lives where Gordon was raised.” The couple was married on June 16th. “I started working in Helena on August 2nd, and I look forward to becoming an integral part of the

community, she added.” Dr. Henry offers complete restorative dental services for the entire family, from annual exams, cleanings and fillings to crowns, bridges and dentures. Dr. Brittany, as she is known to many of her patients, loves children

and you can tell by her smile and gentle nature that kids are going to love her, too. If you are a looking for a family dentist, look no further than Old Town Dental and Dr. Brittany Henry. Please join us in welcoming her to Helena!

Independence Day Celebration A BIG HIT IN OLD TOWN HELENA JULY 3RD!

With this year’s Fourth of July holiday falling smack dab in the middle of the work week, thousands of residents and visitors flocked to the free celebration hosted by Jim Wathen and Kristi Scozarro’s First Friday committee and the city. The event featured the traditional First Friday events with merchants, vendors, churches and community professionals under tents lining parking lots along Main Street with throngs of food

trucks gathered on both sides of 2nd street with the thoroughfare totally blocked with hungry folks selecting from a wide assortment of choices ranging from desserts like funnel cakes and frozen treats to more hardy fare like Cajun and southern cuisine. Revelers gathered at Old Town’s latest purveyor of spirits on the Party Deck overlooking Main Street at Goodfella’s in a scene right out of New Orleans. Bo Bice used the event to hold

a soft opening of his new studio in Old Town in the small building that formerly housed the Scozarro Law Firm. Bo showed fans and Mayor Hall through his studio where the walls are adorned with mementos collected from the years since Bo’s American Idol days. One of these is a guitar that belonged to the late Jim Croce with an encouraging note to Bo from the late singer’s wife framed below it. Other rooms payed homage to the late Jimi Hendrix and Jerry

Garcia from the Grateful Dead. From his studio in Old Town, Bo is offering voice and instrument lessons as well as selling quality musical instruments. The evening culminated in a big fireworks show funded by donors and purchasers of t-shirts designed by Adam and Deedra George, and the City of Helena. Thanks to all who pitched in to make the afternoon and evening such a success and all who came out to enjoy the festivities.

AND Owner Eric Durrett grew up in Alabaster, but served as a police officer in Helena for several years before a traffic accident left him unable to continue in that line of work. “I developed a deep love for Helena while I worked here though,” said Eric, who has since worked a variety of jobs, mostly in loss prevention and security. “I worked for a short time at a cigar bar on Hwy 280,” said Eric. “I love cigars, and I thought something like that would do well on this side of town. In talking with friends here, a need that kept coming up was a no smoking bar. I thought then and there that the possibility was there to create two complimentary businesses, which we did—a bar with no smoking that features craft beers, premium liquors and an excellent wine selection with a kitchen that serves great food (Goodfellas), and a sealed off cigar bar with a large humidor of

cigar selections (House of Havana) and a private area where VIP members can rent their own humidified cigar lockers in the “Godfather’s Lounge,” complete with engraved nameplates. So a guy who is a cigar aficionado can bring his lady who is not, and both can enjoy a fun night out.” Drinks are served in House of Havana as well, and they offer some of the finest premium brands in the area. There is a hand crafted domino table in the Godfather’s Lounge, and you’ll find a VIP atmosphere here where a member can entertain his VIP guests. There’s an area of the wall here with the building’s original plaster signed by past guests. Already, you’ll see where NFL players and top notch musicians have left their marks. There is a back smoking deck overlooking 2nd Street where visitors wanting a bit of fresh air can get as they enjoy their stogies.

The no smoking bar, “Goodfellas Social Club,” opened June 22 in an upstairs space two doors down from the railroad tracks in Old Town. The entryway, a single first floor door on Main Street, is reminiscent of the entrance to a Prohibition era speakeasy. True to that era’s form, House of Havana is located behind sealed doors in the rear of Goodfellas. This is where fine selections of hand crafted cigars are available from the humidor, starting for as little as $5. More expensive blends are available too, of course, and exotic new selections are added each month. Discounts are available to connoisseurs who often purchase by the box, and this makes an excellent gift idea for the man who is hard to buy for. (Staff cigar experts can help with the selections.)

All bars have Happy Hours, but how about a Happy Hour lunch menu? From 11am til 2pm every day, enjoy Goodfellas’ Killa Combos are offered. Choose from a Chicken Salad Croissant, or a hot BBQ or Roast Beef Sandwich with kettle chips for just $5.99! The regular kitchen menu is loaded with delicious sandwiches served with sides like homemade Mustard Potato Salad and Bacon Baked Beans. A crowd favorite is the “Dippin Danno,” seasoned and sliced roast beef with provolone cheese served on a hot hoagie bun with au jus, mustard potato salad, pickle and kettle chips. The “Tommy Gun” features a pulled pork whiskey BBQ sandwich with bacon baked beans and mustard potato salad. It’s all delicious, and the kitchen is open from open ‘til about 30 minutes before closing: 11am til about 11pm Sunday Thursday and 11am - 1am Friday

and Saturday. Nice to have late night food options on the weekends! “This space just sort of fell into our lap,” said Eric, “there hasn’t been anything here that I know of since the old Emporium closed 20 years ago. In addition to the main bar area in Goodfellas, visitors often take advantage of the Main Street Party Deck out front. With bar stools lined against the rails, it creates a New Orleans feel, especially at night looking out over the street in Old Town. There is no smoking allowed in Goodfellas Social Club or the Main Street Party Deck, so visitors won’t have to worry about being assaulted by smoke when visiting. Recently added is the Wine Loft Stage. Elevated above everybody’s head, various artists pop in to play. From local favorites to Nashville

based recording artists, you never know who might be playing on any given night. Live entertainment is enjoyed Thursday - Saturday evenings at Goodfellas. “The Legends bar at Good- Fellas is constantly being added to. As our regular customers share their treasured mementos, we put them on display,” said Eric. “One of our most interesting items to date is an Rx for alcohol that dates from Prohibition days. There are also antique bottles of liquor, and you never know what tomorrow’s visitors may bring in.” Trains are a fact of life in Helena, so the gang at Goodfellas decided to make their arrivals fun. Every time one passes through town, from the opening whistle until they clear the tracks, $1 Train Shots are sold. Made from a Goodfella family’s secret recipe, they are a popular item— now everybody listens out

for the trains with excitement! “We work with several vineyards with regards to our extensive wine selections, breweries who make our craft beers and distilleries creating unique brands, so we can offer the best possible prices on unique and tasty labels. We have a retail license, so if a customer likes a particular selection, we can sell them a bottle or a case reasonably for their enjoyment at home. Selections such as actor and Alabama native Channing Tatum’s ‘Born and Bred’ Vodka are served at Goodfellas. Our #1 draft beer, ‘Good Wood,’ is brewed in a Kentucky distillery and is whiskey barrel aged for a unique taste. We work hard with all our vendors to insure both our price and our quality is where it needs to be,” said Eric. Football season is upon us, and you’ll never miss any of the action at Goodfellas or House of Havana.

Whether it is college or the NFL that you enjoy, both venues offer a number of large flat screen TVs with all the best games on for your pleasure. The next time you’re needing a little time to get away from it all, make your way down to Goodfellas for your favorite drink to unwind and a great meal, always served with the biggest smiles in town! And of course, House of Havana is right next door if you get the urge for a fine cigar afterwards. You’ll truly feel as if you’ve been transported to another place and time!

BBQ COOKOFF 2018 Judges: Mayor yard BBQ team and the Brother Beard’s Back m Ward. Ca tt Fridy and Senator Hall, Representative Ma

Annual BBQ Cookoff another hit at Market Days in July The grill masters started their set ups Friday night for the big event at Market Days on Saturday, July 14. Proceeds from the day’s events benefitted the Helena Miracle League, and Mary Chambliss, the group’s founder, says the day was a huge success. “We raised over $1,000 today,” exclaimed Mary. Visitors to Market Days paid a donation to sample each grill team’s BBQ offering, with the team earning the most winning the “People’s Choice Award. The Judge’s Competition Award was given to the team which, in the opinion of the judges (Mayor Mark Hall, Senator Cam Ward and Representative Matt Friday), had the best tasting BBQ. Brother Beard’s Backyard BBQ won the People’s Choice Award this year, and the Judge’s Competition Award went to Que’s Brothers. Mary also wanted to include a special thanks to the judges, BBQ Cookoff organizer Brian Crumpton, Market Days organizer Scot Newman and also to Russell Biciste, Scott Pruitt and the Helena Belles for all they did to ensure another successful and fun family event in Old Town. As the Helena Market Days 2018 season has come to a close for the summer, a special thanks to Scot Newman and his team for organizing the chef demonstrations, entertainment and vendors each Saturday morning. See you next year!

Que’s Brothers BBQ team and the Judges, flanked by two of the Helena Belles on hand for the big event.

One of the most unusual grill tops was provided by Scott Pruitt of Oversoul Brewing with his whole hog display. Scott is planning to open Oversoul Brewing soon in the little buidling at the entrance to the Old Town Amphitheater.

Even churches got in on the grilling action. Above, Helena United Methodist Church had its “Guy’s Bible Study” representing with some tasty BBQ for visitors to partake of.

Erech “EJ” Brown

I do believe that there is an “artiste” in our midst. Helena High School graduate and special education student Erech “EJ” Brown attends Falcon Flight, a program at the University of Montevallo, where he is intent on pursuing his dreams.

28 Winter 2018

“Dream big like you are surfing on an ocean wave!” “Don’t give up your passion!” “Don’t give up your dreams!” These are some of the quotes that our son shares as his own. Some may talk about believing in what you can’t see, but it becomes a reality knowing that your child with a disABILITY has the full potential to achieve more than many could ever imagine. Our son, Erech (EJ) Brown, is an aspiring and thriving artist; determined, hard-working, dependable, AND he has Autism. Everybody has a gift to share, and many are life changing with the hope to inspire and empower others.

It has always been our desire for Erech’s gift to do this. In 2006, we moved back to Alabama, and in 2008, we sought out the help of an amazing advocate, Susan Ellis, who now leads a powerful advocacy group known as People First of Alabama. She mentored a few in our family and especially our son, Erech, for a very long time when we were faced with challenges during a few of Erech’s school years. Many were unaware of the skills that he possessed and were unaware of the results that could take place. He was often faced with being told what he would never be able to achieve, do or what he would not be able to accomplish. Life took an amazing turn for the better during his middle and high school years. (His elementary years were great as well). As his advocates, we (his parents), the Full Life Ahead Foundation, many great educators (para-professionals and LEAs) continued to pour high expectations into Erech’s life. Something began to happen

within our son, and he began to show a lot more interest in digital art when using his iPad. We saw some interesting art being created by him. As he moved up to a higher quality iPad and began to research various types of art (due to the art classes that he took during high school), his digital artwork began to soar and catch the attention of the few that we shared it with. Fast forward to 2018, and we are proud to share that Erech hosted his first exhibit at the SABE (Self-Advocates Becoming Empowered) National Conference 2018 that was held in Birmingham. The conference was led by self-advocates who led presentations and hosted booths. This opportunity was made available by Susan Ellis, and it was the “door opening” to more than we could have ever imagined. Many people from around the world, some from as far away as Guam came to have an opportunity to see Erech’s artwork, win gift baskets, and enjoy his creations on stickers, shirts and more! While walking back to his hotel room one night after the conference, he began to make some motions with his hands and I asked, “Erech, what are you doing and saying?” He replied, “Believer! Be a Believer! I want to present on believing!”

It was at that moment that I realized that he was given a vision. He saw how much his artwork was being appreciated by so many and that many who did not know him still believed in him and his work! Erech had his younger brother, Jakkob, who is 12-years-old to be his mentor at his booth and to help answer some challenging questions and try to better explain his at this time “unofficial” business. As of today, his artwork is in the copyright stage to protect what is to come. His dad has officially registered the business name, Erech Bro-Looza, Inc. People can visit his website at http://www.erechbro-looza.com/. Erech created the name himself and will make all decisions about what he will create. We want to encourage many youth, young-adults, and adults with disABILITIES as well as parents, caregivers, educators, advocates, business owners, and well, EVERYBODY to believe in ALL individuals with disABILITIES by empowering each person in knowing that they have a purpose in this life no matter how big or small. Erech is living proof how vital it is to have a team of people who may not be able to see the vision but who ARE willing to believe. Keep Believing, and as I like to say, “Aim farther than the next galaxy—and don’t just settle for the stars!” —Gwendolyn Brown Erech busy at work for Screen Printing by George. Illustrations on this spread are examples of Erech’s imaginitive digital art.

Erech interned with us over the summer and was a pleasure to work with. He had an exceptional attitude and work ethic day in and day out. He assisted us with screen printing, sign making and computer graphic design. He said his favorite thing to do while working here was graphic design, and that seems to be his passion. Erech surprised us one day when he did not have a ride home. Several people on our staff including myself offered to give him a ride home. He stated that he preferred to use Uber. Erech pulled out his phone, contacted an Uber driver and within minutes was on his way home. Few of us here had used Uber and were quite impressed. Erech used Uber a few other times while working here. Erech made an impact on all of us working here. Adam George, Screen Printing by George, speaking of Erech and his summer internship there.

Local Eagle Scout Hopeful Partners with Helena Rose Trial Team On Project As a part of earning Eagle Scout status, a scout must ‘plan, develop and carry out a leadership service project.’ Helena High School senior and Eagle Scout hopeful, Garrett Hinds, did just that recently by partnering with the Helena Beautification Board on a service project to help improve the Helena Rose Trial site. Noticing that the rose trial beds required frequent weeding, Garrett devised a plan to help lessen the problem. “I thought if I could plant grass seed and create a border around the beds, it would greatly diminish the need for weeding,” said Hinds. Brian Puckett, Curator of the rose trial, says, “the original plan for the site was to maintain a three foot border surrounding the trial beds, but the entire area was excavated instead, and when Garrett offered to pull this project

together, we welcomed the idea.” On Saturday August 18, Garrett led a team of fellow scouts and volunteers from Troop 2 at the rose trial grounds to excavate, rake, sow grass seed then cover the area with straw. “Garrett had his work cut out for him, as this is a very large trial,” said Puckett. Three beds, each 270 feet long, contain 78 roses that are under evaluation in Texas A&M’s Earth Kind Rose Trial, and we were proud to partner with Garett on this service project as a part of our overall continuing educational efforts about the trial and the roses under cultivation there.” Great job Garrett, and congratulations on the successful Eagle Scout project!

Helena U10 Softball Team takes Second Place in World Series The Helena U10 All Stars, aka “The Rage,” made 2018 their best year ever with an amazing string of victories leading them to a second place finish in the World Series Finals held in Fairhope, AL, July 1-5. Head Coach Rick Sprouse noted his history with this team. “I have been coaching most of the girls since they were six-years-old, and they have worked so hard over the last four years. In my mind, they have been all-stars since they were six. I can remember as they moved through the years, how they were one of the smallest group of girls, but fought hard and played respectably well.” “This year, when we took the field, they were one of the biggest and most athletic looking teams in the state,” Sprouse said. “Put that together with their abilities and their hard work, and you get the results that they achieved this year.” All-Stars began June 1. The 30 Winter 2018 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Rage went 13-0 in this area, (everything between Pelham and Prattville) with 10 shutouts. “We went 7-2 in the state tournament with 28 teams participating, winning over Corner, McCalla, Walker County, Blount County, Trussville, and Odenville, before losing to Hoover in the Championship Game. In the “World Series,” Helena U10 “the Rage,” only lost in the championship series, (best 2 out of 3) to Atlanta, splitting the first two games 5-4 and 4-3, before losing 6-3 in the final and deciding game. “The Atlanta ‘Golden Power’ squad was 54-0 this year before we beat them to force Game 3,” Sprouse said. “We had victories over Centronelle, AL, Slidell, LA, Hoover (Revenge), AL, New Orleans, LA and Biloxi, MS in reaching the finals in the World series.”

“Every girl on the team made a contribution at some point that helped us put together this unbelievable run.” Assisting Sprouse were Coaches Jeffry Fulmer, Keith Osborn, Michael Darabaris and Pitching Coach, Sue Parsons. Team Mom and Manager was Laura Sparks. The Helena U10 All-Stars pictured here are: Top row l-r:

Coach P.J. Guy honored at council Helena High’s Meredith Byrd ‘Girls Nation’ in Washington D.C.

Since 1947, American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation has provided aspiring young women leaders firsthand experience with practical insight into how the federal government works. Two participants per state, known as “senators,” are chosen to represent their respective ALA Girls State programs. A week is spent creating a mock legislature, submitting bills and resolutions, participating in senate sessions, holding a national convention, and electing officials such as president and vice president. Special field trips include visits to the White House, Arlington National Cemetery, monument tours, and a day on Capitol Hill meeting with state senators and representatives. While the event may happen once in a lifetime, the memories made last a lifetime! Meredith Byrd was sponored by Helena High School to attend the Girls State Program at the beginning of summer. Girls were split into cities and at the end of the week, each city nominated a delegate to interview to represent Alabama at Girls Nation in late July. I was nominated by my city, Redstone, and interviewed with the American Legion Auxiliary staff as well as some counselors who previously attended Girls Nation. At our commencement ceremony, Meredith and one other girl were chosen from over 400 girls and twelve nominees to represent

Alabama. “I was overwhelmed and honored to be chosen; I still am,” said Meredith. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsored Meredith’s full trip and travel to D.C. “I did not have to pay a dime,” said Meredith. I owe so much of my incredible experience to them. Priors to the week of the program, each state submitted selfwritten pieces of legislation, either resolutions or bills. “During the week, we got the opportunity to debate and pass those pieces of legislation. Although we did not get through all fifty pieces, the bill written by me and my co-senator, Claire, from Vestavia Hills, The Death with Dignity Act, was passed! It was incredible to accomplish something so unique. It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience.” “Through every mock senate session and party meeting, the most rewarding part was spending a week with 100 incredibly diverse and empowered young women,” said Meredith. “We elected federal positions, and with each speech, we heard new ideas and opinions. It was so wonderful to spend a week with such a driven group. The girls were encouraging to everyone’s beliefs and backgrounds. I have never been a part of a program with so many people who were so open minded and accepting.” “My favorite part of the whole trip was the day we joined with the delegates of Boys Nation and

Senator Cam Ward and Representative Matt Fridy were in attendance at the August 27 Helena City Council meeting to make a presentation to a perennial championship contender, Helena High Baseball Coach, PJ Guy. Senator Ward said to Coach Guy, “You’re the kind of coach we need when we’re going through high school sports. I ended up running track and field for so long because I had a coach who said, ‘son, you can’t run, you have no coordination and you can’t catch the ball, but you can run in circles the rest of your life.’ When you take all your students and nurture them, it will mean something to them for the rest of their lives.” Representative Matt Fridy read

a House and Senate proclamation commending Coach Guy for being named Coach of the Year for the second year in a row: “Whereas P. J. Guy has led the HHS Baseball team to three state championship games, winning 26 plus games each season, with a total of 127 wins over four years as Helena High School Head Coach. Extending our heartiest congratulations and sincere best wishes for continued success.” Also in attendance were Representatives Allen Farley and Arnold Mooney as well as Coach Guy’s biggest fans, wife Lee Anne Guy and daughter, Eleanor Grace. Congratulations to Coach Guy and family on this latest recognition of P.J.’s coaching prowess. Go Huskies!!!

met with our state senators. I got to meet with Senator Jones (pic above left) and the staff of Senator Shelby. They were all very welcoming and willing to answer our variety of questions. We spent the day walking around Capitol Hill and received a personal tour from Senator Jones’ assistant. Overall, the trip was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. I learned more about our Nation and its government, and

how to approach hot topic issues intelligently and respectfully. I would not trade the experience for anything, and now I have 99 new friends from all over the country! Congratualtions to Meredith Byrd on the honor of being selected and hats off to the American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation for providing such an inspiring experience for our leaders of tomorrow.

July 2018 Helena Beautification Award Winner The Helena Beautification Board is proud to announce the Helena Beautification Award for July is awarded to Kim & Tom Edwards of 100 Creekwater Street. This imposing residence is affectionately called “Mount Edwards“ as it sits atop a hill. Built 2014 by local builder Brett Winford, the homes floorplan was designed by its owners. “We found a floorplan we wanted and with a few tweaks, we made it our own, says Kim. The driveway leading up to the house is lined with tall pine trees creating an inviting drive up to the house. Alongside the driveway you’ll find shade and sun gardens in addition to a dry creek bed they created themselves to alleviate a drainage issue and bring beauty

and functionality to the space. Her desire was to create a “selfmaintaining landscape” and they are achieving that by selecting the right plants for the right space. In shady areas, Limelight hydrangeas, hosts, elephant ears along

On the sunny side of the drive and interspersed throughout the property you’ll find colorful perennials and shrubs planted for maximum display potential. Drift roses, lantana, mandevilla, gladiolus, Nikko Blue hydrangeas as well as many other plants that create a striking display along the hillside garden. Around back, you’ll find an outdoor oasis with a pool, outdoor fireplace and beautifully crafted patio that looks like one large slab of stone. “Everyone needs a pink flamingo near the pool, don’t you think?” said Kim. This fun element adds whimsy to the garden. Their next move: A self-poured stone path. “Each year we allocate funds for garden projects and we spend hours in this garden making it happen, says Tom. Their hours of hard work and dedication have paid off. Congratulations! Many times, a photograph can say so much more than words can describe. They paint a vivid picture and capture moments in time. In January of this year one Helena mover and shaker set out to showcase Helena online through a photo essay on social media he calls #Helena365. Brian Puckett is involved in many things in Helena. From serving as a past treasurer of the Helena Elementary PTA, coaching soccer, serving as Curator for the Helena Earth Kind Rose Trials or as Vice Chairman of the Helena Beautification Board, Brian sees and does a lot. I just wanted to show the world what Helena was really all about, says Brian. Armed with a new iPhone, he set out on January 1st to capture his first picture. “It’s an effort to capture all the people, places, things and events that make Helena a special place to live. It’s a photo a day that captures our past, our present and a glimpse of the future. My work

on the Helena Beautification Board has shown me that people and places truly are profoundly connected and trying to capture the essence of this town is what I hope to accomplish. It’s a sometimes-quirky, sometimes serious look at places, at objects and buildings, at landscapes that form the backdrop for our lives”, says Puckett. His recent ariel photos of the old Helena train trestle and of the main intersection in town he dubbed “The Intersection of Happiness and Frustration” garnered attention from followers around the nation. We all know that the best part of Helena is its people. It’s a cast of characters that are unique to our town. Recent photos of Ron Holly, Helena’s self-proclaimed welcome center ambassador, and American Idol star Bo Bice have captured the hearts and minds of followers as well. “These photos are an invitation to explore our town, visit our businesses and to get to know our people. I’ve had people tell me they’ve visited Helena because of this essay. If that’s happened, I think I’ve accomplished my mission.” Brian said. Follow Brian’s photo essay on Instagram @Jbpuck or simply by following the #Helena365 hashtag.

Friday Night Lights–a New Era! Helena loves its high school sports, and there is nowhere that is more evident than Friday nights in the fall as fans flock to the stadium to watch their Husky football team in action. With the season already started, Helena football players and coaches put in some hard work all spring and summer making preparations for the 2018 season. Helena High School made a big move earlier this year hiring Coach Richie Busby away from Fultondale High School. Busby, a longtime resident of Helena, spent 18 years with the Wildcats serving as head coach five of those years. He brings with him a very impressive head coaching résumé boasting an overall record of 4017. Busby replaces Watt Parker who went 18-25 during his four seasons with the Huskies. Coach Busby and the Huskies wrapped up their spring season preparations with a scrimmage Saturday, May 19th. They also made strides over the summer and during fall camp. He explained that his staff was able to implement their base offense and defense over the time periods allowed by the AHSAA for coaches to evaluate and work to develop their teams. Coach Busby says getting the numbers up from last year, in terms of students playing football, is key to building a foundation of success on the gridiron here at Helena High School, and this first step has been accomplished. From just over 70 student athletes in the program last year, the coach reports that 115 are playing this year from grades 9-12, representing about a 153 percent increase in the number of players. “We went after every athlete playing other sports who we felt could contribute to the football team, and we tailored a lot of our workouts this summer around baseball and baketball. We’re doing everything we can to get

those kids playing for us. We’ve gotten some terrific athletes to join us and hopefully, as time goes on, we’ll get more. They will see that we are going to make sure that we tailor our program around the other sports here so that one does not interfere with the other.” “I think that is key when programs are trying to share athletes, so that will be a point of emphasis with our staff. And that will be a key to our success here at Helena—getting all the boys from other sports who should be playing football to suit up for us. All we ask is for them to give us a chance. We recruited a couple of basketball players to join this year’s team who should give us immediate help. Dante Cave is on the team this year as well as Matthew Hobbik and a couple of other basketball players. They see that it is not going to interfere with them. In fact, the basketball team worked out with us during June.” “We hope to get more participation from all the other sports, too, like baseball, track and wrestling. It takes more time to build a football program than it does other sports—there are just a lot more people involved,” said Coach Busby. “The weight room, strength and conditioning and proper sports nutrition can’t be addressed all in one year. It’s a multiple year project, so I hope that everybody will pull in the same direction and give us the support we need to be successful here. We’re trying to feed the players as much as we can after workouts, as this is vital to the athletes’ physical development. So far it’s been mainly peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with chocolate milk, but the key is caloric intake to keep good

weight on the kids and develop them physically. It’s the cheapest, next best thing to protein powders and expensive protein bars, and that’s the thing–they need to eat something within about 30 minutes of working out to take advantage of all the strength training. We have other kids who have lost bad weight though, and it was needed to make them better football players on Friday nights. Jonathan Williams lost 25 lbs and will be able to go harder now.” “Most of our players are young this year and without a lot of experience. The offensive line in particular needs time to play together and get reps in order to gel as one unit. That’s not something that happens overnight, but we

are certainly trending in the right direction,” finished the coach. We all need to come out and support our Huskies this fall! Let’s show our new head coach and the team patience as they set about the task of creating champions on the football field.

Sports fans: Please support your Helena Athletic Association Since Helena High School opened its doors in 2014, many of its athletics programs have already seen a lot success. An integral part of all successful athletics programs is a strong support system. With more than 100 members, the Helena Athletic Association has been one of the main support systems for athletics in Helena. The HAA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed to provide financial support for all Helena schools and their athletic programs. While Helena High School was being built, the HAA took out a loan to build the weight room there, which is expected to be paid off by July 2019. In addition to the weight room, the organization has provided additional supplements for coaches to assist Helena schools with attracting and retaining top talent, as well as providing additional funds for teams that are eligible to participate in state championships. The Helena Athletic Association is always looking for new members to join their organization. HAA is a completely volunteer-driven organization, and all funds go directly to the

school administration to be divvied out to the different sports programs. HAA President Brian Turner stated that, “To be able to be as successful and far reaching as possible, we will need to increase our participation so that we can do more.” Prospective individuals can join the association through three different levels. These levels include: Blue - $45 per year, Black - $75 per year, or Lifetime - $500. Typically, the group meets at least quarterly at the Helena High School field house. For those that are not interested in joining the organization but would still like to make a donation, all donations are tax deductible. For more information about the organization or to inquire about membership, you can find the group on Facebook, or you can visit their website at www.hometeamsonline. com/teams/HELENAHUSKIESATHLETICS/. Be sure to clear your schedule on Friday nights this fall and come out to support the Helena Huskies as they enter their first season under Coach Richie Busby. The Helena Athletic Associatio n will have Helena Husky attire this football season at each home game, so be sure to swing by their tables and get all the gear you’ll need to support the team.

Meet Helena’s newest American Citizen—Jennyfer Goodnight “I had the opportunity to visit America in 2002 with a friend and decided to make it my home due to the opportunities here,” said Jennyfer. “When I first got here, I worked many different jobs like carpet and vinyl installation, cleaning houses, a babysitter, and restaurants. My job at a Brazilian steak house in Vestavia is where I met my husband in 2004. I have been working for Iberia Bank for the past nine years and also currently manage Jacob’s Corner Event Center, an event venue in Alabaster since 2017.” “I was raised with a strong sense of community which comes from my family’s big heart and the encouragement they showed me to always help others. I spent many Sundays with my grandmother cooking meals for 40 children and their families who were less fortunate than us. This is why most of my experiences here revolve around giving back to the community,” said Jennyfer. “I am a Junior Board Member for The Bell Center Early Intervention Programs in Homewood. The Bell Center is dedicated to maximizing the potential of infants and toddlers who are at risk for developmental delay. Since 1984, The Bell Center has provided therapy for over 1,500 infants and toddlers, producing dramatic results for the children and their families. I’m a member of the Brazilian Day Festival committee at Horizon Church in Vestavia. The church supports 18 different mission projects. These missions build churches, provide Biblical training for pastors, ministry to widows, and bring hope to those in need. The Brazilian Day Festival is one of these projects. It raises money to support missionaries and projects both here and around the world. One of the great benefits of this annual event is that it allows our community the opportunity to become partners in support of missions and humanitarian efforts both here and abroad.

“Helena is a very special town for my family. When I was pregnant with our first and we were looking to purchase a first home, we chose Helena because of the excellent schools and affordable housing. Helena is a great family community to live in. We have several Brazilian friends who have also chosen Helena!” “The whole process of becoming a U.S. citizen is long and expensive. I had to hire an attorney to help me with the first part of the process, obtaining my green card. I was able to do the second part of the process on my own, which was applying for citizenship. It took over a year. I applied in May, 2017, had my immigration interview in July, 2018, and learned that I was approved! On August 2nd, I attended my Oath Ceremony. I thank God for this victory. I couldn’t do this by myself, but for God, nothing is impossible! I thank this country for the opportunity of becoming an American Citizen. Living here for the past 16 years, I have built the most unforgettable memories!” “I thank my family and friends for being there at my oath ceremony to support me and applaud my victory. That meant so much to me! I thank my family in Brazil for all the love and support that they have given me through these 16 years of being away from them. (Even though we were far away, our hearts were always so close.) I thank my American family, the Goodnights, for welcoming me into their family with so much love and support for this crazy little Brazilian girl. I thank the American friends that I have made through the years for always being so kind and welcoming to me! And finally, I thank my Horizon Church family for making me feel so loved and for always being there for me through the good and the not so good moments of my life. I now know what it means to say, “I am PROUD to be an American!”

Young Helena Resident to be local Honoree in Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell Run The Arthritis Foundation leads the fight for the arthritis community. Their mission is to help people with arthritis conquer everyday battles through life-changing information and resources, access to optimal care, advancements in science and community connections. The Arthritis Foundation’s goal is to chart a winning course, guiding families in developing personalized plans for living a full life – and making each day another stride towards a cure. A local Helena resident, Julia Vaughn, is gearing up for the Arthritis Foundation’s annual Jingle Bell Run as this year’s youth honoree. This race is a fun way to get decked out and be festive while racing to raise funds and awareness to cure America’s #1 cause of disability, arthritis. Julia was diagnosed with JIA,

Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, when she was two years old. Her mom noticed she was limping and her ankle was severely swollen. Julia’s mom immediately called the pediatrician, and a few days and several blood tests later, they were referred to a Pediatric Rheumatologist at Children Hospital of Alabama. The rheumatologist confirmed that Julia had JIA. Julia also suffers from Enthesitis, inflammation of the tendons, and Uveitis, inflammatory of the cells inside the eye. Thankfully Julia was diagnosed early, saving her from severe and permanent joint damage. She has dealt with arthritis for nearly nine years and has had many challenges along the way but continues to be a light in our community. She is involved in swimming, volleyball, and even plays clarinet. Julia is so excited to be the Youth Hon-

oree for this year’s, Jingle Bell Run and plans to educate others about how kids get arthritis too, as well as be an ambassador for the organization. Julia says, “If there is one thing I want everyone to know about having arthritis, it is that even when you are hurting, to always believe in yourself and never stop what you love doing.” This year’s Jingle Bell Run will be held at Railroad Park on Saturday December 8th. To find out more information and to register, visit: www.jbr.org/birmingham. To join

Julia’s Personal Team or to make a donation, please visit: https://events. arthritis.org/team/8883.
