Stacy Cobb, Pageant Works

Greetings everyone! I sincerely hope all of you are doing well. It’s back to school for all our Helena students which brings a variety of great activities back to our city. I want to thank all the teachers and staff at our schools for getting everything ready to go for our kids! It’s going to be an exciting time as we ring in the start of the school year with many improvements at the schools through our partnership with the Shelby County Board of Education. We will now have full-time dedicated police officers at every school, and I appreciate the Council’s efforts for funding this. I am very happy to see that the brand-new synthetic playing surface will be ready for action as the Huskies play their first football game on the new state-of-the-art surface in the official season opener August 23rd. The second phase of the improvements to the facilities will be the addition of a rubberized track and the addition of track and field event stations at each end of the field. This is in progress and will be complete in the next few weeks. The field, which is also home to our soccer teams, is marked for soccer and lined 6 feet wider for those events. I am

also pleased to report that new additions to the Joe Tucker Park tennis courts are on schedule for completion soon. Our middle school and high school teams will play there, and the courts remain open for use by our citizens as well. In other important news, intersection improvements are in the survey and final design phase for Hwy 52 and 261 at HES. This is a 2.5-million-dollar project funded by the Regional Planning Commission, ALDOT and the city. This project should bring great improvements for traffic congestion at this location. I will keep pushing and working with ALDOT to help get this done as quickly as possible. I am also very encouraged to receive reports that the proposed widening of Hwy 261 is a high priority with ALDOT as well, and I will have more information to share on this soon. On other fronts, I expect to see a plan for retail development at the old Helena Tire and Wheel to be up for approval very soon. This should provide a great economic boost for our city and allow us to make needed improvements at that location. It will be exciting to see much needed change come to that corner of our city. The development will have the potential to bring added tax revenues to the

CONGRATULATIONS TO NEW MISS ALABAMA, TIARA PENNINGTON! Hats off to newly crowned Miss Alabama, former Helena Belle and Helena High School graduate, Tiara Pennington. Tiara has been involved in pageants from an early age and has many crowns to her credit, including Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen in 2016 and Miss University of Alabama, the first African American to win this coveted title. As this goes to press, a reception is planned in her honor on August 11 where Mayor Hall is to present her with a key to the city. Congratulations to Tiara, and good luck in the Miss America Pageant!

Now TWO Fitts brothers have taken the mound at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska

Two of Helena’s Fitts brothers have now had the privilege of pitching in the College World Series, held each year in Omaha, Nebraska. Trevor Fitts, a 2011 Pelham High School graduate (in the days before Helena had its own high school), helped lead Mississippi State to a historic finish in the 2013 College World Series. The team finished as runners up, which is the highest finish in Mississippi State Baseball history. Trevor gave an impressive performance on the mound as his younger brother Richard, along with the rest of the Fitts family, cheered him on. Upon graduation, Trevor moved back to Alabama to pursue a master’s degree in education from the University of South Alabama. He was then hired as the pitching coach at Daphne High School. In 2018, Trevor joined Mississippi State University as its director of baseball operations. After a new head coach brought in a change of staff at Mississippi State, Trevor joined the coaching staff at Jacksonville State University as an assistant baseball coach. Younger brother, Richard, is a 2018 Helena High School gradu-

ate. Richard grew up watching Trevor play baseball and thought that one day he would follow in his big brother’s footsteps. Those dreams of playing in the SEC were challenged after an injury kept Richard from playing his junior year in high school. In fact, he says he thought that his opportunity to play baseball in college was gone. But after an impressive start to his senior year, Richard’s recruitment picked up mightily. (A 92 mph fast ball thrown with control will do that.) Auburn University coach, Butch Thompson, was one of the coaches interested in Richard. The Fitts already knew Coach Thompson because he had previously been Trevor’s pitching coach. Richard really liked Coach Thompson and chose Auburn University to coninue his playing career. This past season, Richard pitched 62.2 innings in his freshman campaign and helped AU advance to its first College World Series appearance since 1997. In June, With the whole Fitts family cheering him on, Richard took the mound and pitched a total of 5.3 imposing innings in the first and second game at the World Series, thereby fulfilling his childhood dream of following in his brother’s footsteps. Trevor cheered on his little

brother Richard (even when he faced both Jacksonville State and Mississippi State this year). According to Mom, Angie Fitts, “both boys root for each other no matter what. Blood is thicker than anything else!”

Danny and Angie Fitts are the proud parents of three sons, Trevor, Nathan and Richard. Good luck to Trevor as he continues his coaching career and to Richard as he continues in the rotation for the Auburn Tigers!

Service with a smile

Local dentist helps boost patients’ confidence through orthodontics By June Mathews Whoever said, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work another day in your life,” must have known Dr. Priscila Denny, orthodontist and owner of Oak Mountain Orthodontics. If anyone ever loved a job, Denny loves hers, and “work” is the last word she uses to describe it. For her, it’s mostly about relationships and helping others. “When we can help people feel confident about their smile, that’s really big,” she said. Denny cites the example of a 13-year-old patient who barely spoke when she first came to the clinic. Whenever the girl did speak, she put her hand over her mouth to hide it. “After six to eight months of treatment, she had stopped cover-

ing her mouth, and her whole face would light up when she smiled,” said Denny. “By the end of treatment, she had undergone a huge change. Something like that is very rewarding. While Denny’s patients range in age from children to adults, she feels that teens probably benefit the most from orthodontics. “That’s usually when their teeth look the worst,” she said, “and improving their smile helps them not to be so intimidated by the changes teens are going through.” And Denny should know. Not only did she wear braces herself as a youngster, but all her life she’s seen how orthodontics can affect people and their smiles for the better. A Brazilian by birth, Denny comes from a family of

Dr. Priscila Denny dentists, including several orthodontists. In fact, her mother and aunt are both orthodontists, serving as the best role models Denny could have ever wished for. “If I had stayed in Brazil, it would have been easier,” she said. “My family is known for dentistry there, and everything would have been laid out for me to practice after I finished school.” Instead, Denny met her future husband during a visit to Birmingham in 1994, and within a year she had married, moved to Alabama and enrolled at UAB. It took a decade for her to complete the education required for

her specialty and establish Oak Mountain Orthodontics, but she did it. And she’s understandably proud of all she’s accomplished. “It was long, hard path, a 10-year journey, but it was worth it,” said the busy mother of two daughters. “And I always knew it was possible.” Oak Mountain Orthodontics, with offices in Helena and Pelham, offers full orthodontic care in a fun, comfortable environment. Dr. Denny was recently named Birmingham Parents’ Choice for Best Orthodontist for the second year in a row.

GOAT YOGA—a fun, new way to excercise with the “kids!” Now you can exercise with the kids, and enjoy it right here in Helena. (Kids meaning baby goats, lol.) Goat Yoga BHAM (GHB) has captured the hearts of most everyone who has participated in one of the 40 sessions it has hosted since the company opened its doors on March 2, 2019. Phillip and Amy Pruett moved to their little farm just off CR 277 two years ago with their 12-year-old daughter, Abby. Abby has been a tremendous help with everything from setting up the sessions to showing guests how to feed the baby goats. This family owned business is home to about 35 Nigerian Dwarf and Pygmy goats. Although the goat’s range in age, they usually use the younger dozen to participate in a single yoga session, with the youngest being Honey, only fourweeks-old. A typical session at GYB includes an hour-long yoga session led by a certified yoga instruc-

tor, several young goats running around (and on top of) you, feeding time, and endless chances for pictures and memories. A few weeks ago, the Helena High Majorettes visited for a team bonding experience. Sponsor Jordan Smith said, “The owners and instructors were very helpful. I feel like they are able to accommodate all levels of yoga expertise (or lack thereof) and make sure we had the best overall experience.” In addition to the several sessions GYB offers weekly, they also offer a once-a-month Wine Down session. This extra hour after your yoga session not only allows for more time with the baby goats, but gives one the opportunity to fellowship while drinking their favorite beverage and eat some, wait for it, homemade goat cheese with crackers. GYB is far from your typical outing, but is a unique experience that all adventurous souls are sure to enjoy!

VBS means VERY BEST SUMMER for lots of kids in Helena! Vacation Bible Schools broke out all over Helena this summer. A few submitted reports and pictures for this article. ROAR! If you were in town June 10th through the 13th, you must have heard about the African Safari right through your backyards. Of course, we’re talking about Church at Cahaba Bend’s Vacation Bible School. Kids spent these nights braving the savanna with Zion the lion, Hooper the hoopoe bird, Savanna the giraffe, Marge the cape buffalo and Mack the rhino! This safari was not like any other; it was spent making crafts, playing games and singing songs. With the help of countless volunteers, the students embarked on a journey that required big smiles, lots of fun and ferocious faith. Church at Cahaba Bend taught over 80 students that Life is Wild, but God is Good. Their eagerness to serve the community through this program allowed students to explore the wildness of nature as well as the wonders of God’s love.

This year’s theme for VBS at Riverside Baptist Church was ‘The Incredible Race’ — the human race — where we are One Family, One Race, One Savior. Pam Golden, Children’s Minister, said they had a great time with over 100 children from their church and the community, with 30 adults and teens ‘traveling’ to five of the continents and discovering God’s love for the nations. The children enjoyed Bible study, games, snacks, crafts, science and music. Helena United Methodist Church had a ‘Roaring’ good time at VBS in July as the kids learned that God is good! There were 198 kids participating and 104 youth and adult volunteers who served. They ended their VBS week with a Safari Celebration on Thursday night. The kids performed songs they had learned and enjoyed fellowship time with a hot dog supper. “VBS is always the highlight of the summer for the kids at Helena UMC,” said Cynthia Dooley, Children’s

Minister at Helena UMC. Since 1894, Vacation Bible School programs have created positive, faith-based learning environments for students even after school is out. Whether its roaming the desert or racing around the world, Helena’s kids are loving the opportunities VBS offers to learn about the Bible and grow in their faith. Churches all around our city, our state, and our nation utilize this program to teach students in depth about the Bible and to invest in their

lives. Helena loves Vacation Bible School, and the kids love it, too. Maybe VBS should stand for the Very Best Summer!

Breathe well–sleep well–live well Could CPAP treatment be right for you? For anyone who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea (stopping breathing during sleep), the question is, “What do I do next?” Neighborhood CPAP is here to help you arrive at the best treatment option for you.

CPAP is the gold standard in treating obstructive sleep apnea by sending a flow of pressurized air to keep your airway open. As a bonus, it stops snoring! CPAP gives your body undisturbed, restorative, restful sleep.

10 Late Summer 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

So, if you wake up tired, with headaches, or your spouse gets angry because your snoring keeps them awake, you need to be evaluated for sleep apnea. Then, please come and see us at Neighborhood CPAP. Neighborhood CPAP has been in Pelham since 2009, and we have helped thousands of patients. We take pride in our customer service, helping people who are new to CPAP as well as patients who have depended on their CPAP for decades and would not sleep one night without it. We accept Blue Cross, Blue Advantage, TriCare, and Viva insurances. Beginning in January, we will be able to accept

Medicare patients. When you come in, we let you choose your CPAP machine, and we program it according to your doctor’s order. We explain your sleep study results and teach you how to use, clean, and maintain your machine and supplies. We then show you a selection of CPAP masks—we have the largest selection in the state—and we try them on you while you are connected to a CPAP machine. You choose the mask that works best for you, and if you don’t like it, you have up to 30 days to exchange it at no cost. Our goal is for you to be comfortable and feel good. We all spend about one third of our lives sleeping. It is nature’s way for us to rest, dream and help our body heal. Neighborhood CPAP is here to help you sleep well and wake up refreshed and ready for the rest of your life. We look forward to seeing you!

“Many municipalities do not correlate beautification efforts with economic development. Helena however, does. The board’s beautification efforts are all a part of an overall plan to enhance the quality of life for our residents and to provide ‘first visuals’ for visitors who might want to shop our merchants, establish a business or move their family here, said Brian Puckett, Helena City Councilman who also serves as the HBB’s Vice Chairman. This planting of roses will create a visual impact to the Welcome Center area, and we value the ongoing partnership with the HBA, said Puckett. The roses, planted in a bed near the Welcome Center Caboose, is an English variety named “The Lady of Shallot,” and is a large, double flowered rose with salmon-pink blooms. It was named an American Garden Rose Selection winner for the Southeast in 2017. This variety is known for its bloom power,

disease resistance and its appealing apple and clove fragrance. “We are excited to have these shrubs and to be able to add to the ongoing revitalization of the entryway to Old Town. Everyone who passes by these roses when in bloom will be in for a treat,” said Chris VanCleave, Chairman of the Helena Beautification Board. The Helena Beautification Board is an appointed board of the Helena City Council. The board believes that people and places are profoundly connected and thriving communities are rooted in individual responsibility and action. They host a variety of opportunities for the community to come together and serve each year. Events are posted on the Helena Facebook page and announced via Twitter at TweetHomeHelena.

Helena author Melissa Little inspires young adults with novel Born in Helena in 1996, Melissa Little moved back to our town four years ago after spending her childhood away. It was a childhood filled with whatever book she could get her hands on. She penned her first story at the age of eight. “From that day on, I kept writing, but none of it was genuinely good until late high school or college,” she says. Her years of hard work paid off when, after 35 submissions and nine rejection letters, Little’s novel, The Book of Secrets, was accepted by Black Rose Writing, a traditional publishing house based in Texas. The young-adult novel, a fantasy adventure of four siblings, purple cats, and a cross-country journey, releases this month and is her first published work. Little was homeschooled as a child and received an associate’s degree at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Alabama. Between classes, she volunteered at Helena’s Jane B. Holmes library, where she gained much of the inspiration for her novel. (The action kicks off when the main character, a bookshop employee, makes a mysterious discovery in a box of donations.)

“Those are really the two things that enabled me to publish a book so early in my life,” says Little. “With the amount of free time I had growing up, I could read for hours and write terrible things and learn from them, and then the fact that I worked in a library and got my idea from there.” Melissa lives happily in Helena, and several locations in her book may sound familiar to Helena residents. She is focusing now on her theology degree through distance learning with Ohio Christian University and hopes to work as a college professor and freelance writer in the future. Her biggest hope for her book, she says, is that in the future, a handful of people remember reading and enjoying it as kids, the same way hundreds of books have impacted her. The Book of Secrets releases August 15th, 2019, and will be available in both print and Kindle through major retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. It is currently available to preorder at blackrosewriting.com. Use the promo code PREORDER2019 at checkout for 15% off your purchase. You can contact the author on Instagram at @mllittleauthor.

Happy 243rd, America!!! Helena celebrated the Fourth of July on the third this year, and did so in its traditional style, wirh a late afternoon/early evening festival capped off by a fireworks show around 9 p.m. to commemmorate America’s 243rd birthday. Local merchants sold t-shirts to help make the fireworks show bigger and better and to this viewer’s eyes, the fireworks this year seemed bigger and better than ever—thanks to all who 14 Late Summer 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

came out and participated! A big thanks goes out to the Helena Business Association and its new president, Amy Guida, for the work they put into this year’s event, too. Amy and her crew of volunteers helped stage the festival and vendor’s portion of the event. The Helena Belles were out in force providing guest services as well as manning a booth to sell leftover July 4th t-shirts.

Meet Helena’s Woodsmith — Monty Montgomery Monty creates unique heirloom quality masterpieces Talk about a Jack of All Trades, Monty Montgomery of Helena has dipped his toe into “just about everything” before retiring. In retirement, he started Monty’s Wood Crafts. While Monty has been making pens as gifts for about 15 years, this family owned and operated business has been running for the past six years with the help of Monty’s wife, Della, and son, Marty. “I believe one of the greatest points in my craft is that it keeps one young and active. It allows me a purpose and ability to contribute in my golden

years,” Monty said. Montgomery learned most of his craft starting at the age of eight, watching his uncle, a craftsman who made furniture at his shop in the St. Louis, Missouri area. Monty was practicing wood working at a high level before graduating high school and joining the infantry in the United States Army. After the army, he pursued careers as a police officer, medic, nurse, business man, law student, and worked his way up to a vice president’s position at UAB. Della is originally from

Helena, where the two of them moved and started raising a family almost three decades ago. Monty’s backyard shed, originally built to store his boat, is now filled to the brim with woodworking tools and keepsakes from past projects. While he mostly hand- crafts original pens, his other works include pen blanks, walking canes, cork screws, and wine stoppers. Montgomery has produced incredibly memorable pieces of art using dried flowers, digital art pieces, and even wood from the old St.

You can contact Monty on Facebook to contract him to make a commemorative original pen. Or you can find him on his Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/ montywoodcrafts/). F3 Birmingham making an impact in Helena Acountability group known locally as “The pack” Faith, Fitness, and Fellowship are the three words that make up the foundation of the fitness craze having an impact on the Helena community. This peer led workout group, made up of men of various ages and fitness levels, has touched the lives of thousands of men. The program, formally known as F3, is a free program that started in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has expanded to several cities in more than 26 states, including the Birmingham area. Last week, one of our writers met up with the ‘The Pack,’ as the local group is called, at Helena Elementary School. Approximately 30 men showed up to an early morning fitness session that was closed in prayer. This particular group started out as a small group for Church of

the Highlands and after its initial success, decided to keep it going. They became a part of the F3 organization officially two years ago. “Iron sharpens Iron” is a Biblical truth which this group of men use to describe their purpose. They not only hold each other accountable when working out, but also in life. There is no pressure to be a fitness guru when attending an event, but if you feel like it is a good fit, be prepared to receive your own nickname. Jason Awtry, known as Mayhem, has been a member of F3 for two years. Jason was a competitive runner for several years. “After an injury, I had stopped working out to heal, and when my wife saw a post online about this group, I decided to come out,”

said Awtry. He also said that the first couple of sessions were rough, getting back into shape, but the process has paid off in not only physical health, but also in finding true friends. A new member of only two weeks, Patrick Riley, whose nickname is K5, works at Helena Elementary school. Riley said that joining the F3 organization allows him the opportunity to meet and fellowship with other guys and achieve the feeling of accomplishing something before his day really begins. This “fraternity,” as one member put it, allows men to workout, relate, and spend time with other guys in the community and to be a part of a Christian Brotherhood. The Pack also participates in community outreach opportunities, bible

studies, and even a guys’ night out on occasion. F3 has about 17 groups in the Birmingham area that include both running groups and boot camp groups that show up whether it’s rain, sun shine, or snow outside. Our motto is “Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you find him,” explained one of the veterans, Austin Bender (Jiffy). The men of the organization strive to be better in all areas of life while building camaraderie at the same time. If you are looking for a place to go and mature physically, spiritually, and personally, then F3 might just be the place for you. You can find out more information by visiting the organization’s website at f3birmingham.com.

A pair of Peacocks “lost in Helena” find a new home at Helena Hollow! Two female peacocks have been roaming the streets of Helena. Nobody knows where they came from or where they were headed, but they have landed in a new home over at Helena Hollow. After the two large birds were spotted on Frances Lane, neighbors enlisted the help of Jamie and Amy Griffin of Helena Hollow. They were asked to take the birds to a safe environment. The peacocks, now known as “Bette” and “Cher,” fit right in at the farm on Hwy 17 living with a group of chickens, pheasants, and a few other peacocks that the couple were already raising.

The Griffins say they are happy to keep these two beautiful birds with plans to eventually use them to roam around their petting zoo. Make sure you stop by and see Bette and Cher at Helena Hollow’s upcoming pumpkin patch event running from October 5thNovember 3rd. The farm will be open to visitors on Saturday and Sunday from 10am- 6pm for $10 per person. There will be food trucks, live music, and more than 15 family-friendly activities. Mark your calendars and make plans to come out and join in on all of the fun!

2017 6A State Champion Huskies—Where are they now? A few of them are playing college baseball, and we thought we’d bring you an update on their status

Auburn University Tigers Richard Fitts (2018 Helena High graduate)

Jacksonville State University Gamecocks Brett Walton (2017)

After sitting out with an injury his junior year, Richard says he did not think he would have the opportunity to play baseball in college. In the first outing of his senior year, however, his fast ball hit 92 mph, and that caught the eye of many college recruiters. Richard recently pitched in the College World Series as a freshman in Omaha, Nebraska. He is taking classes this summer and looks forward to a place in the starting rotation his sophomore year at Auburn. Richard is the son of Danny and Angie Fitts.

Brett said he was impressed with Jax State’s pitching program and was excited to grow as a player. Brett red-shirted his freshman year but unfortunately, as a sophomore, he was diagnosed with Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS). Brett saw action as a closer against Purdue University as his only game of the year due to his injury status. What he misses most about Helena is being on the field with all the guys he grew up with. He says he wishes they had just one more game together. Brett is a marketing major and has plans to work in advertising after graduation. Brett is the son of Frank Walton and Kimberly Harris.

UAB Blazers Riley Davis (2017)

Martin Methodist College RedHawks Colton Hood (2018)

Riley says he will never forget the love and support from the community while playing for the Huskies. He said he misses his family and friends, but is enjoying his time in college. He just returned from playing summer ball in Virginia. UAB had Riley as a starter in the pitching rotation his sophomore year. Riley is pursuing a degree in Health Care Management and is interested in getting into the Physician’s Assistant program. Riley is the son of Rod and Lauri Davis.

Martin Methodist competes in the NAIA division of college athletics. Colton tells us they moved him to first base his freshman year. “I had a good year, but pulled a hamstring in the championship series, and it hampered my play a bit.” “Pulaski is a small town where everybody knows everybody,” he said, “and there’s not a lot to do. But we are only about 45 minutes from Nashville and about 30 minutes from Huntsville.” Colton reports that his hamstring is back to 100 percent now, and he is looking forward to getting after it on the field again in a few months. In a dorm room his freshman year, he says he is looking forward to moving into an apartment this year with a private bedroom and shared common space. Colton is the son of Denise And Glenn Hood.

Troy Cordrey (2017)

Troy currently resides in Birmingham with his teammate, Riley Davis. He started playing baseball in Helena at the age of four and continued playing all the way through high school. According to Troy, “It would be hard to find a team as close as we were at Helena; we were like family.” Even though he says he misses seeing his high school teammates regularly, he enjoys the brotherhood he has found with the Blazers. Troy is currently going through physical therapy while recovering from Tommy John’s surgery. He is a kinesiology major and says he would like to graduate and continue on in a Physical Therapy graduate program. Troy is the son of Stan and Christy Cordrey.

University of Alabama Crimson Tide Landon Green (2018)

Landon Green sat out his first year at the University of Alabama after having Tommy John’s surgery. “I have one more week of rehab,” said Landon, “and I am looking forward to going to work soon getting ready for next season. I love everything about Tuscaloosa, but I also love the fact that I’m only an hour from home so I can visit often to eat a good, home cooked meal and catch up with my family and hometown friends,” he said. Landon is majoring in Consumer Science. He is the son of Jason and Connie Green.

Jacksonville State University Gamecocks Nash Adams (2017) Nash loved moving back to Jacksonville, where he lived as a child and developed a love for this sport. Adams says he enjoys college, but misses seeing his friends and family from Helena on a daily basis. This fall, Nash will start his third year at Jacksonville State after returning from a summer baseball league in Iowa. Academically he is a junior, but he is a red-shirt sophomore on the field. Nash is a marketing major and would like to work with a sports brand upon graduation. Nash is the son of Chad and Mendy Adams.

According to Husky head coach PJ Guy, Nick decided last year that he was not going to cotinue his baseball career. Since then, he has made the decision to get back on the roster this season. Good luck Nick! Nick is the son of Staci and Jeff Ragsdale.

Shelton State Community College Bucs Nick Ragsdale (2018)

Sam Praytor (2017)

Recruited early by the University of Alabama, Sam started 45 of 56 games behind the plate his freshman year. “I was hitting around .300 the whole year before sliding into a little slump near the end,” said Sam, An injury in the 5th game to his elbow meant Tommy John’s surgery, and he took a redshirt for last season. “My rehab ends this December,” said Sam, “and I will be good to go when the next season rolls around.” Asked what his favorite thing about living in Tuscaloosa has been so far, he says—“Saturdays in the fall, no question about it!” Sam counts several Tide football players among his friends. He is pursuing a major in Human Performance- Exercise Science. Sam is the son of Ben and Tracey Praytor.

Are you ready for some football? Head Coach and Athletic Director Richie Busby

ABLISHED 2012 T S E

The Helena Athletic Association hosts Husky Day 2019! “The varsity squad will dress about 90 players this season, and we have about 125 young men who will dress out including the freshmen,” said Head Coach and Athletic Director, Richie Busby. “We have 29 seniors returning, and that is big for us in terms of team leadership. Our quarterback and returning receivers are all seniors, and we have four returning starters on the offensive line, two of which are seniors,” he continued. “Senior center, Sam Regina recently set a personal best with a 610 lbs squat and Seaburn Hines did the same at 605 lbs, remarkable for an underclassman.

We have made great strides in our strength and conditioning program,” said Coach Busby, who early on put a big emphasis on proper nutrition in addition to building strength and speed, both of which should serve the Huskies well in making strides towards improvement on the gridiron this season. On defense, the 2019 Huskies could have possibly four seniors starting in the secondary. With

perennial wrestling star Nathan Dunaway, middle linebacker, returning as the defensive signal caller and three seniors on the defensive line, this year’s team should provide improved play making the Huskies more competitive this year on defense, too. Ladarrius Rice returns at one corner. “Ladarrius is one of our first to get an offer from a Power Five school, Wisconsin, and he also has an offer from Central Michigan,” said Coach Busby. Senior dual threat QB Luke Stamba has an offer to play for Birmingham Southern and Junior Seaburn Hines already has offers from Central Michigan and Jacksonville State, and there are sure to be many more offers to come as his tough OL play continues. Senior OL Chase Perry, 6’2” and 255 lbs has offers from BSC and Lindsey Wilson College, and tight end Chris Miller has an offer from Birmingham Southern College. Back on the offensive side, Marquis Johnson, a junior running back who had 1100 yards of rushing to his credit last year, and had a great offseason in the Huskies’ strength and conditioning program and will look to add

to his yardage this year running behind a stronger, more experienced line. “We also have two senior tight ends in Chris Miller and Will Griffith, who came over from baseball. Will hasn’t played football since 8th grade, but had four nice receptions for us in our spring game, a 52-0 victory over Childersburg, so we are looking for a good year from both these two young men. They are both big guys with soft hands and a good combination of quickness and strength. Senior Sam Regina returns as a 6’3” 290 lbs center

and will be a force for us in the interior offensive line. He will also be playing college ball in the future,” said Coach Busby. “Our backup QB is a good athlete with room to grow. Sophomore Mac Turner is a 6’1” true pocket passer, and we will look for Mac to be valuable off the bench and provide us with a reliable second option at QB this season.” “Baseball Coach P.J. Guy and basketball Coach Billy Grant have been invaluable to our program in their encouragement of athletes to play multiple sports

Two seniors expected to factor heavily in defensive success this season include these two players—Ladarrius Rice at cornerback and Nathan Dunaway at linebacker.

COACH BUSBY DISMISSES THE TEAM JUST BEFORE START OF FALL CAMP.

HUSKY FIELD

BEFORE as opposed to specializing in just one. So many young athletes, all of whom are still developing at this stage of their careers, are suffering overuse injuries as a result of this specialization. It is thought that by cross training into other sports, that some of the all too frequent repetitive use injuries can be avoided, and it allows us to get the best athletes on the field to play in a variety of sports,” said Coach Busby. “How we finish the season will be determined by our ability to avoiding injuries on the offensive line and to key players on both sides of the ball. We need to control both lines of scrimmage, and we need to have a plus in the turnover category— a big thing no matter what kind of team you have. We can’t commit senseless penalties and get behind in down and distance to be successful this year. We don’t want to give anything away for free. We will have to play disciplined ball and give a full team effort to be successful. We have to develop a winning culture here in football,” said Coach Busby, “and I am proud of the way in which our guys have bought into the strength and conditioning program in the off season. We should see improvement in all areas of our game this year as a result.” “It is not a cheap thing to feed and outfit as many players as we have, and we need all the community spirit and support

we can muster. A single helmet costs about $400 these days, and to outfit a single player is over $1,000,” he continued. The coach showed this writer a new helmet that looked nothing like the ones from only a few years ago. “There is so much technology that has gone into these new helmets to protect the athletes as much as possible on the field. And they have to be recertified by a regulatory body each season, which costs $55 per year, per helmet,” said the coach. “Recent incidences of concussion are far reduced in football as compared to other sports, like girls soccer, where concussions occur about five times to a single football concussion nowadays, and I credit that not only to improved equipment but also to improved tackling and blocking techniques. But football is the sport that takes all the blame for head injuries in the media, it seems. It’s not fair and the actual statistics don’t support the arguments, but head injuries to former NFL stars have had their fair share of time in the national media, and it is hard to fight that public perception. But facts are facts.” “A full team effort requires participation from not just the players and coaches, but also the fans,” he went on. “Our Helena Athletic Association needs the full support of our community,” said the coach. Please encourage

AFTER everybody you talk to to purchase a season ticket package this year. They are only $165 including a reserved parking space. We have to raise money for all sports here, and there is not enough money to fund a successful sports program without everybody pitching in and doing all they can to help create a winning tradition on the football field. The City of Helena has bent over backwards to help us, and we are eternally grateful for all the city does for us. Spectators will see a brand new playing surface on Husky Field this year. It’s being installed by the same company that installed one for the New England Patriots, and not only saves in terms of field maintenance requirements, but is also much less prone to injuries to the players who compete on it. It not only serves high school football, but also middle school football and both boys and girls soccer. We are adding a rubberized surface to our asphalt track in another bid to mitigate injuries such as shin splints and other stress injuries, and are installing facilities for track events we have never had here, such as pole vault, long jump and triple jump sand pits. This will enable us to host area and even statewide track events that we have not had the facilities with which to host before. And that will bring people from all over who will eat, shop and purchase gas, paying sales tax

in Helena and generating even more funds for local improvements,” said Coach Busby. “High School sports have become big business, and we need the community’s support more than ever by coming out, buying tickets and wearing Husky gear whenever they can.” We are proud to announce Husky Day Saturday, August 17. Admission is just $5 and the Helena Athletic Association has a full evening’s activities planned starting with varsity player autographs for the kids with jump houses, dunking booth, face painting and a cornhole tournament. There will also be a Punt, Pass and Kick Contest for Kindergarten through 6th grade contestants. The fun starts at 4pm. Following is the evening schedule: 6:00 pm 7th Grade Scrimmage 6:45 pm 8th Grade Scrimmage 7:30 pm Middle School Cheer 7:40 pm Little League, Flag Football and Youth Cheer Intro 8:20 pm Freshman Cheer 8:40 pm 9th/10th Grade Scrimmage 9:15 pm JV/Varsity Cheer 9:30 pm Varsity Scrimmage 10:15 pm Concert featuring country/ rock McAbee’s Garage Band Be sure to come out and enjoy all the fun—wear your Husky gear and show your Husky pride! Our Summer Reading Program is officially over for 2019! It was a lot of fun! We held 39 great programs over the 2 month period for Summer Reading with a total attendance of over 1000 people! That means that we had almost a program a day with an average of about 30 people per event. That’s AMAZING! Thanks for all of the support! Some of our more popular programs were Animal Tales and The McWane Science Center Program. We also had many of our favorites back again this

This year we also added some new Teen programs; Book Bingo, Art of Origami, and a Teen Close-out Pizza Party. Our teen programs were a great success. As always, special thanks to the City of Helena, all the City Departments who support our program, the library staff, and the many volunteers who help us through the summer. Oversoul Brewing: Brothers, Jason and Scott Pruitt, are passionate about creating unique craft beers Their love of brewing started over a decade ago. In 2006, the brothers decided to try their hand at brewing a batch of beer in the backyard. They had some success and upgraded to Scott’s garage. With more success, they took their hobby and made it a business. Oversoul Brewing was born. Jason and Scott moved their business to Helena in November 2018. They immediately started to work to renovate the old Helena Jail into a welcoming family-friendly brewery. The brothers worked tirelessly to renovate the building and did all the work themselves, with the exception of the deck, weekends and nights after work. On May 10, 2019, thirteen years after they made their first batch, Oversoul Brewing sold out on their soft opening at the Buck Creek Festival. The Pruitt brothers grew up in Pleasant Grove, Alabama. Jason and Scott were both attracted to the Helena community and decided to

take up roots and move here. Jason moved here four years ago and Scott followed about a year ago. They knew they wanted to make Helena home to Oversoul Brewing. Oversoul Brewery is a nano brewery. They produce their beers in small batches. This gives Jason and Scott the opportunity to focus on the techniques they use to brew the beers and develop the flavor and quality. The beer is made in a traditional way and considered craft beer. It takes about four weeks to make a batch of beer. With small batch brewing, every batch is fresh. The brothers use all fresh ingredients for their beers like blackberries or whiskey soaked oats. The brewery offers three or four standards that rotate. Some favorites include: Pistol Porter, Buck Creek Brown, and House IPA (Indian Pale Ale). Diverse flavors are incorporated into some of the beers. The summer beers will include a Peach Saison

made with Chilton County peaches and a Watermelon Saison. Oversoul also offers a Farmhouse style beer in their Market Series made with local fresh produce directly from Helena Market Days. The Pale Ale with Dill is a unique beer made with fresh dill that comes from Helena Market Days. Seasonal beers will rotate with some only being available during certain times of year like Christmas. The brewery also offers delicious root beer for kids or adults. Oversoul is growing, and the brothers hope to start “to go” sales soon with the addition of a glass 32-ounce “growler.” Jason and Scott want people to know Oversoul Brewing is a brewery and not a bar. The brewery is open to everyone: friends, families and even pets. The brothers invite

you to grab something to eat and come hang out on the deck while you sample some of their unique beers. There are coloring books and games for children and adults alike. They built Oversoul to be welcoming to the whole family. Since opening in May, Oversoul has been busy every weekend welcoming the community. Be on the look out for live music and TVs for watching your favorite sports team coming to the deck at Oversoul this fall as well as some food trucks. Do I smell some Brother Beard’s BBQ in the air? See you there!

MARKET DAYS Every Saturday Morning 6am-Noon Big thanks to Scot and Jen Newman for heading up Helena Market Days again this year. The Newmans and their dedicated crew of eager volunteers have outdone themselves this year with terrific chef demos featuring such names as Chefs Chris Hastings, Guy Lagace, Clifton Holt, Matthew Norman and others. The vendors who are there each Saturday during the summer from 8-Noon are a great mix, too, for customers looking to buy local and support area farmers and merchants. It seems that this year, there is truly something for everyone! This season has featured such themed days as the Black and Blueberry Festival and Peaches and Ice Cream Day. There was a BBQ Boston Butt Cookoff featuring guest judges

Councilman Hal Woodman, Mayor Mark Hall and Representatative Matt Fridy. Ques Brothers won the Judge’s Choice Award this year and Brother Beard’s BBQ won the People’s Choice Award with over $611 raised in donations. (Thanks to Brian Crumpton for organizing this event!) There was a Grilled Corn Day, Watermelon Day and even a day made for couch potatoes like myself, Sausage Biscuit Day. Helena Market Days runs through the end of August and there is talk of continuing the event into the fall. Stay tuned and enjoy these pics taken at a few of this year’s Helena Market Days.

BL-R: Blake Lewis Head Baseball Coach Lawson State Community College; Chandler Rose Head Baseball Coach University of Montevallo

These two college baseball coaches are buddies, and both love calling Helena home! Helena is a unique community for many reasons. Did you know that two head baseball coaches from colleges nearby call Helena home? Blake Lewis, Head Baseball Coach for Lawson State Community College and Chandler Rose, Head Baseball Coach for the University of Montevallo (UM), both live in Helena and are close friends. Blake Lewis hails from Pleasant Grove, Alabama. After high school, he played baseball at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton, Alabama, before transferring to UM to play for the Falcons. Blake graduated from UM in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology. He later earned a graduate degree in 2008 from the University of West Alabama. Blake started his coaching career with the University of West Alabama’s baseball program while still in graduate school. He went on to serve as head coach at Lawson State Community Col-

lege for four seasons before joining his friend, Chandler Rose, as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for UM. After a stint at UM, the opportunity to coach his own team at Lawson State Community College presented itself again, and he decided to make the move back to become head man. Blake is now entering his 8th year as head coach at Lawson State, and the school’s baseball program has flourished under his direction. This past season, his team came in 3rd in the state, setting a school record for number of wins. The team also came up just two games short of going on to the World Series tournament from their division, and one player was selected in the MLB draft this year from his roster. “There is a quick turn-around time for a junior college, but I am glad to have some key players coming back and an exciting recruiting class for next season,” said Blake. Blake is married to Amanda,

and they have three children: Fischer, Griffin and Logan. Amanda currently serves as the head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director at Helena High School. The family moved to Helena three years ago. Blake said that he and his wife just knew this was the community in which they wanted to raise their family. Chandler Rose is a Florida native and a graduate of the University of Central Florida, where he played baseball. After graduation, Chandler took on the position of assistant baseball coach for Florida Gulf Coast University. He later went on to serve as the assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator for the Air Force Academy for four seasons. Today, Chandler is entering his tenth year as the Head Baseball Coach of the University of Montevallo, where he has worked hard to turn the Falcons’ program around. In recognition of his hard work, Chandler was named the

Young Helena artist’s work on display this month in Hoover Beck Unnoppet, a second grade student at Prince of Peace Catholic School in Hoover, had his artwork selected recently to be on display at the Hoover Library. Beck was one of only twelve students to have their art chosen to represent Prince of Peace Catholic School in the Hoover Library’s Student Art Gallery for the month of August. Works of art from private schools in the area will be display. In addition, the Hoover Library hosted an art reception on August 11 for the artists and their families. Beck is the son of Dr. Nop and Sonya Unnoppet of Helena. Congratulations to this young artist! 30 Late Summer 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Small College Coach of the Year for 2018. He has coached multiple players who have gone on to play Major League Baseball. The Falcons were 5th in their conference this year. “We were coming off a strong year,” he explained. “We lost a lot of key players from the 2018 team and had lots of new guys on the diamond. Halfway through the season, the team started to come together. I look forward to next year with a couple of key players returning and a talented new recruiting class,” he said. Chandler is married to Sara, and they have three children: Levi, Alayna and Dalton. Chandler and his wife fell in love with Helena and made it their home four years ago. They now live in the same neighborhood as Blake and his family. Best of luck to these two coaches in the future—we’re proud you both chose Helena to call home!

LE A S FOR

tal ToMAKEOVER by Yevette Trussell

Cahoon House (c. 1900) in Old Town gets a total makeover 516 2nd Avenue West, Helena, Alabama 35080 Yevette Trussell is a custom homebuilder and longtime resident of Helena. She started her career in construction in 1994 when someone asked her to build them a house. Yevette’s response was “I don’t have a license.” The potential client knew of Yevette’s reputation as a person of integrity with an eye for detail and waited for her to go through the licensing process to start work on their house. Yevette got her license, built the custom house and has been building and remodeling houses all over Birmingham since then. She has worked most of her career in new home custom construction and worked with one other builder as a superintendent in the past. Yevette says she loves her work. “I design things. I can look at a project and see what it needs,” says Yevette. Her unique approach and determination to do top quality work sets her apart in her field of new home construction. She is not a fan of cookie cutter designs. According to Yevette, “I want my designs and finished projects to be timeless and classic. I have never finished a project that I would not be pleased to live in.”

Yevette started her current remodeling project, the historic Cahoon House in Old Town Helena, in October of 2018. The original house was built in 1900 and was in desperate need of repairs and improvements. Yevette said the house needed a lot of love, but says she could see the diamond in the rough and was determined to see the project through. Yevette started by increasing the square footage with the addition of a master bath and closet. The floor plan was reworked to meet the needs of families today while retaining the character of days gone by. The kitchen was totally rebuilt and updated to today’s luxury home standards. The beautiful handmade cabinets and countertops were custom made just for this home by a local, Garett Payne of Divine Designs. The featured antique brass and hand blown glass pendant lights over the sink were imported from France. Most of the original wood walls, ceiling and floors were refinished. Some of the tongue and groove wood is over 100-years-old. Yevette preserved as much of the original house and character as she could and reused the historic wood that

was removed whenever possible. She is not afraid to mix things up using historic and updated materials side by side. You will see scallops on some of the newly installed fixtures that pay homage to the original scalloped trim in the kitchen. The house features hand-blown Victorian era glass shades on light fixtures and an antique wrought iron railing that Yevette drove to Tupelo, Mississippi to purchase. The details of the materials chosen can not be replicated today. Wide trim was used through out the house, which can be quite expensive, but according to Yevette, “It would not look right to use anything else.” She does not skimp on quality but looks for deep discounts to save money where she can. Yevette claims she looks after the client’s money like they were her family, always trying to find the best deals. Safety is important to Yevette and she made sure all aspects of the home were updated including the plumbing and electrical systems. The house now boasts ample closet and cabinet storage (unusual for a house built in 1900). Yevette worked tirelessly to transform this historic house to

a home that any family would be happy to live in. Today the 4 bedroom, 2 full bath house is sparkling new inside and brimming with personality. It is something you would expect to see on a home restoration TV show. The home is 1743 square foot with an additional 288 square foot studio that could be used for many things. It has a new deck and a big backyard. There is even enough room to add a guest house or garage. To date, this is the longest remodeling project Yevette has undertaken. Remolding this historic home was a labor of love. “Character and details were paramount to this project. I wanted the story of the house to show,” says Yevette. She describes the style of the house as “old southern cottage.” She put her stamp on everything and is pleased with the way it came out. Yevette feels the historic district in Old Town is the heart of Helena and it is important to preserve it. To tour this spectacular home and see if it is the right fit for your family, call Yevette Trussell today at 205-821-4885.

Type 1 diabetes at the age of nine. Although she lives with this disease, she does not let it stop her from doing the things she loves including art and music. After graduating high school she has dreams to attend UC Berkley and study veterinary medicine. She is the middle child to Dr. Derien and Toni Braxton between brothers Dakota (20) and Jalen (11). The JDRF 2019 Children’s Congress took place July 8-10 in Washington, D.C. Children’s Congress is the largest media and grassroots event supporting Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. The goal of the event was to raise awareness about T1D and to let congressional leaders know how essential they are in advancing research. Celebrity T1D role models attended the entire event, sharing powerful experiences of living with T1D with both delegates and congressional representatives. Children’s Congress ended with a critical and emotion-filled Senate hearing on Capitol Hill for the

Special Diabetes Program (SDP), which provides $150 million annually toward T1D research and is essential to JDRF’s mission to create a world without T1D. The program began in 1997 and has contributed nearly $2.8 billion toward T1D research. About JDRF The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading global organization funding Type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested more than $2.2 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement and our vision of a world without T1D. Like mother, like daughter(s) It’s all in the family at the Gardners

Jonah Hyde: Husky track star headed to University of Louisville

Hats off to Kirsen Gardner on the scholarship to pursue her track career and education at Jacksonville State University. We caught up with the former Husky State Champ and sat down with her and a couple of family members. Kirsen is following a similar path as her mother, Dominga, did as a high school graduate. Growing up in Columbus, Mississippi, Dominga also had a State Championship on her resume from Columbus High School. (“Kirsen’s ring is bigger than mine,” she said.) Dominga says she met her husband, LaKeon, in high school. After graduation, the couple went on to Mississippi State, during which time they got married. Dominga competed on the Bulldog track team, throwing both the shot put and the hammer throw. These days, Dominga works for Jefferson County as a computer application developer and programmer while LaKeon is a landscape manager for the City of Birmingham. Oh, and Dominga is also Kirsen’s throwing coach on Coach Richard Anderson’s track team at Helena High School. The family have been Helena residents since 2006. The Gardners actually have two state champion daughters: 11th grader, Kya, is a rising junior and last year, competed on the 4 x 100 state championship team. She is also on the Husky basketball team. This family needs a large trophy

Jonah was born in Limestone County, Alabama, but was adopted by his loving parents, Reginald and Dianna Hyde at five months of age. Originally from Mississippi, the Hydes bought a house in The Highlands neighborhood in Helena about this same time. Jonah is Helena through and through, having attended and graduated from each of the city’s four schools. It was during his sophomore year at Helena High when his math teacher, Coach Sparks, encouraged Jonah to go out for the track team. “At first, I was a sprinter. They tried to get me to do high jump, but I was hesitant. I finally gave in, though, and thought, why not? My first event, I won first place with a jump of 6’3,” and I knew then that I could do this.” That first meet would prove fortuitous, as three years and three state titles later, Jonah will attend the University of Louisville in the ACC this fall on a track scholarship. Jonah credits Coaches Anderson and Winstead with helping him secure the scholarship from such a prestigious university. “Coach Winstead knew the retiring jump coach at UL, who put a word in to the current track and field jumps coach, Jeff Petersmeyer, who offered me the scholarship. Set to report into Louisville August 15, Jonah says he is

case, as Dominga says that Kirsen has over 100 medals she has won over the years, including for her three State Championships in Shot Put. She had offers from Navy, Missouri, Samford, Austin Peay and lots of others, but settled on Jax State. “Coach Boone is a great coach,” said Kirsen, who says in college, she will not only throw shot put, but also discus and the weight and hammer throw, (which isn’t allowed in high school), and will compete in both indoor and outdoor events. “I’m jealous that I won’t be here to compete on the new track the city has invested in here this summer,” said Kirsen, alluding to the new facility here that will allow Helena High School to now host large scale track events at the school. Best of luck to Kirsen as she competes for the Gamecocks and Kya on her upcoming junior year at Helena High!

excited at the opportunities that lay before him. “I’ll definitely miss my family and friends here, but I am excited for the future.” Jonah is 6’3” at present, but he is not through growing. His doctors have told him that he is projected to peak at about 6’7” in height. Could his future hold an Olympic appearance? We’ll have to wait and see. “Right now, I have the lowest PR (personal record) jumper on the team, so I will have to work hard to grow stronger and increase my jumps,” said Jonah. “I’m excited about that because it gives me the motivation to go to work and improve my performance.” Three state championships tell this writer that hard work will not be an issue with this Helena track star. Jonah has two sisters: Spencer, 22, who will soon graduate from Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, N.C. and a sophomore at Helena High. Best of luck to Jonah Hyde in all his future endeavors—his hometown of Helena will certainly be pulling for him!

Meet Helena High School 2019 Valedictorian: Jessie Zou Jessie was born in New York and moved with her family to Helena in the first grade. This writer’s first time to meet Jessie was when she was a second grader and served as translator for her parents in their new the time restaurant, Zou’s Chinese. She was old beyond her years, it seemed to me in those days, and her most recent accomplishment bears that out—she just earned the top spot in the Helena High School Class of 2019 graduating with a 4.6 GPA, and the coveted title that goes along with that—Valedictorian. During her time at Helena High, Jessie was inducted into many honor societ-

ies, including National Math, History, English and Spanish. She was a member of the Art Club and the Math Team, and also served in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program the past two years mentoring Helena Intermediate student Alexis Windham. Her parents, Vicky and Kevin Zou, are both of Chinese descent and speak halting English, so Jessie and her younger sister, Sharon, a 15-year-old sophomore at Helena High, have proved invaluable to their parents in the operation of their popular Helena restaurant over the years. As if earning Valedictorian status in her graduating class was

not enough, Jessie was recently awarded a partial scholarship to attend the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania this fall. Jessie credits her time in her high school business class, known as DECA, along with her business background and experience gained during her youth working at her parents’ restaurant, for much of her current success. Jessie says she plans to focus on business economics and public policy during college. “I don’t have to declare a major until my sophomore year though, so we’ll see,” she said. Jessie says she enjoys reading

in her spare time and also loves to cook. She says with a smile that some form of noodle soup would probably be her “last meal” request. “I haven’t really processed the fact that I am leaving home soon, to be honest,” she said. “I’ll probably do that after I’ve moved to Philadelphia.” Jessie says that in the future, she would like to open a non profit and help with humanitarian issues. Good luck and best wishes to this young lady who has such a bright future ahead of her!

Former Husky, Tiara Pennington named Miss Alabama 2019!

44 Late Summer 2019 / www.CityOfHelena.org

On June 8, Helena resident Tiara Pennington was crowned Miss Alabama 2019. Tiara grew up in Helena, served as a Helena Belle and graduated from Helena High School. Tiara was formerly crowned Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen 2016, and also has the title of Miss University of Alabama on her growing resume. She made history as the first African American to win the UA crown. Tiara will represent Alabama at the Miss America Pageant in 2020, where she will show her talent as a gifted opera singer and talk about her Philan-

thropic cause, “Psoriasis: Take Action Alabama.” She is currently a political science major at the University of Alabama and plans to attend law school after she graduates. The Helena City Council announced a resolution declaring Au-

gust 11, 2019, Tiara Pennington Day. A reception was given in Tiara’s honor and was held at city hall from 2-4 p.m. where she was also given the key to the city by Mayor Hall. Tiara is the daughter of Don Lee and Dedra Eastland Pennington.

SIX WHO STOOD OUT IN THE HUSKIES’

W

e asked six seniors, selected as exemplary students by the counselors’ office, a few questions. Here are their replies…

Meredith Byrd Byrd, daughter of Houston and Jill Byrd: “My favorite Helena High School memory was Homecoming week of my senior year. SGA put a lot of work into decorating, and we had so much participation in the dress-up, class games and other activities it was a huge success. DeLeisa Lowery is my favorite HHS teacher because in one unit she teaches through different methods; whether it’s through notes, videos, lecturing or hands-on, she gives every student the opportunity to really understand the material. Teacher and mentor, Tara Watts, has been the most influential person in my life. She has shown me what it means to have unwavering faith and love without restraint. She has always supported me, no matter what. I plan to attend Anderson University this fall to study Biochemistry. I hope to pursue a doctorate degree and a career in disease research. In 20 years, I’d like to have saved the world, but if not, then I will probably have cured cancer. I might be President after that. Who knows?” Caroline Locke, daughter of Chris and Lori Locke: “My favorite memory from Helena High School would have to be Senior Day on May 1. I absolutely loved getting to walk through the feeder schools and hang out at Helena Hollow with all of my friends. My favorite teacher at HHS is Mrs. Knight. She is always so optimistic and genuinely loves her students and the material she is teaching. The most influential person in my life my mother. She has literally shaped me into who I am today by guiding me through the rough times, allowing me to make my own decisions, and overall always supporting me. I plan to attend the University of South Alabama and major in speech pathology starting this fall. I also wish to get involved in some fun on-campus activities. In 20 years, I hope to be established in a career I love and that pays the bills. I want to have a family of my own as well.” Jessie Zou, daughter of Kevin (Wenhui) Zou and Guoying (Vicky) Lin: “My favorite Helena High School memory was Senior Prom. It was really nice to get away from school and see everyone dressed up and enjoying themselves. Mrs. McKinney is my favorite HHS teacher. She radiates so much joy and kindness. I can’t thank her enough for all she has helped me with the past three years. The most influential people in my life are my parents. They work 12 hours a day and six to seven days a week, but they never hesitate going through the continuous stress and fatigue for my sister and me. They are my heroes. This fall, I will attend the University of Pennsylvania to study Business Economics and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business. No matter where

I end up or what I am doing in 20 years, I hope I am truly happy, enjoying life, and making a mark on the world.” Brooks Lovoy, son of John and Cindy Lovoy: “My favorite Helena High School memory is senior awards day. Being recognized for your achievements is very satisfying and shows that all your hard work has paid off. My favorite HHS teacher is Mrs. McKinney. She not only helped me develop my skills as a student, but as a person as well. The most influential person in my life is my mom. She is always supportive of me and is willing to make sacrifices to help me succeed. She pushes me to do my best and try new things. Next fall, I plan to attend Auburn University and major in chemical engineering. Twenty years from now, I plan to be employed as an engineer and give back to the community through charity and volunteer work.” Chris Moon, son of Paul and Esther Moon: “My favorite Helena High School memory is the free lunch times during Pack-Go because it was where I was able to spend the most time with friends at school. My favorite HHS teachers were Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. McKinney because they were able to make their classes enjoyable and are just great in general. My parents are the most influential people in my life, because for 18 plus years, I have seen what they have done, and continue to do for me and my siblings. Starting this fall, I plan to attend Auburn University and study a business major there. I am really looking forward to it. In 20 years, I hope to be able to start a business overseas, preferably in Korea or Japan because I like the scenery there.” Christian Hill, son of Christopher Hill and Vicki Hill: “My favorite Helena High School memories would have to be the state championship track meet trips with my team. We always have a great time with each other as well as other great athletes we’ve come to know over the years. I plan on visiting them, but I’ll certainly miss them. I’ve been blessed with having many wonderful and impactful teachers at HHS, and I feel like they all deserve recognition for being the incredible people that they are. The most influential person in my life is undoubtedly my father. I owe much of what I’ve become to him. He’s not only been a true friend to me, but also an excogitative man that I strive to be. I’m planning to go to UAB and major in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. From there, I’m going where God is leading me. The future is never certain, but I think I would love to be a biochemist working to cure diseases and form treatments in 20 years.”
