Sterile Sharps Bins The careful and time consuming cleaning and disinfecting of sharps bins before transferring into controlled aseptic areas and isolators, is not a guarantee these bins will be free from microbial contamination. The crevices and rims of containers are difficult to clean and could harbour harmful organisms.

Winners of the Katherine Miles Poster Competition 2015 We are pleased to announce that Mandeep Matharoo of Addenbrooke’s Hospital became the official winner of the APTUK Katherine Miles poster competition 2015, sponsored by Helapet.

Mandeep’s poster on “An innovative visual tool identifying Education & Development opportunities for pharmacy technicians, incorporating the APTUK Foundation Pharmacy Framework” secured her a cash prize of £250 and her name on the board of poster winners.

Also congratulations to the runners up, Dalgeet Puaar and Emma Walker of London Pharmacy Education and Training (LPET), and Panayiotis Sphikas of University College London Hospital who also received cash prizes.

Helapet.net study day

Successful start to the Helapet.net Study Day Programme 2015 Last quarter Helapet delivered two well received educational day long sessions supporting risk awareness and best practice techniques in aseptic manufacturing. The sessions took place at The Vale Resort, Glamorgan, and Crewe Hall in Crewe.

Each Study Day explored important topics affecting clinical pharmacy, and welcomed professionals from across the country to share their own experiences and knowledge. Subjects included MHRA updates, opportunities and restrictions on vial sharing and handling hazardous spills.

Assessing airborne contamination using a novel rapid microbiological method Abstract: The cleanliness of changing rooms used to access pharmaceutical cleanroom facilities is of considerable importance. This ensures that the changing environment and the act of putting on cleanroom suits do not generate high levels of contamination; for such contamination might be carried on personnel leaving changing areas and into the process areas. Furthermore, it is important to avoid the transfer of contamination to the outside of the garment during the gowning process. A study was undertaken to assess the levels of airborne contamination in a changing room during use. To assess this, a changing room was examined under different conditions: at-rest; occupied (with different numbers of personnel); and post use. For the assessment, a novel rapid microbiological method was used. The assessment of microbiological air quality within changing rooms is conventionally undertaken using methods which rely upon microbial growth media. Due to incubation times, several days are required to ascertain the contamination level risk. This paper describes the use of an alternative real-time continuous monitoring system (the BioVigilant IMD-A® System), based on optical spectroscopy. The paper concludes that increasing the numbers of personnel going through a changing room increases the level of airborne biological activity and increases the length of time required for the room to recover. The study also demonstrates the usefulness of the rapid microbiological method.
