ACSA TIMBER COMPETITION MARTA 2.0 is a transit-oriented developemnt in midtown Atlanta. The design responds to the city’s exisitng and planned built environment with a site-oriented strategy with a post and beam glue-lam timber system and a braced timber protal frame system.

recreational space that concludes the the midtown art walk. The tower on Art Center Way is constructed with a post and beam glue-lam timber system. East facade of the tower forms an intimate streetscape with the meticulously placed skylight elements.

The design proposal is narrated as a three-phase master plan. The first phase is the proposed Midtown Art which connects 10th and 15th street. The second phase is the mixed-use developent which provides affordable short-stay housing, urban marke t place, community center, and urban space connected to the MARTA station. The third phase is a new

The original MARTA station is replaced by a bridge, which hosts retail space, suspending over the urban plaza below it. The new bridge serves as an urban catalyst for the neighborhood and connects Midtown to other parts of Metropolitan Atlanta through public transportation.

THESIS INQUIRY Covid-19 started in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019. As the pandemic spread to the rest of the world in 2020, it was largely controlled in China with the enforcement of the “Zero-Covid policy”.

What would our built environment look like? This thesis intends to speculate the built environment under the total development of the pandemic, consolidates the climax of the state of alerts. Contribute to the architectural discourse by exploring methodologically the potential of architectural narrative.

The Zero Covid policy, while eliminating the existence of the coronavirus, also served as a political campaign for the government. China suppressed the spread of the virus and its citizens were able to get back to normal life while other countries were struggling. However, the peace achieved by the anti-virus campaign was compromised by omicron which is much more transmissive than the previous variants of the virus. Following a series of socio-economic events triggered by the intensification of the campaign, anti-virus policy were lifted at the end of 2022.. But what if the campaign against the virus went on? 24

“Among different manifestations of wall - bearing wall, partition wall, party wall, feature wall - the defensive wall best captures the element’s essential political character as a way of setting a limit between self and other.” In the Pandemic, mechanisms of separation are implemented - face covering, social distancing, partitioning - to contain the spread of the coronavirus. It’s not surprising to see that the essential qualities of the wall and pandemic method of control align with each other. The architectural idea of the wall is related to the spatial experience of the pandemic, and it could be established as the basis for an architecture of the pandemic.

ARCHITECTURE SCHOOL The 2047 Campus Master Plan of VIrginia Tech calls for the relocation of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies from North Academic District to the Creativity and Innovation District. This project reimagines the Squires Student Center to be the new school of architecture building. While the design responds to many elements such as solar

orientation, circulation, programming, and construction. The main focus is to preserve the ground condition of the courtyard space between the two wings and provide members of the university community a space to relax and wander.

HOUSING OPERATION Manenberg is a township in Cape Town that was categorized “coloured” in the apartheid-era South Africa. Till today, a significant portion of its residents still live in apartheid-era flats with very poor living conditions. We were given the oppturnity to replace a pair of apartheid--era flats with our schemes. The project aims to deal with the small living space and uninhabitable court-

yards by redesigning existing floor plans and imposing a mega structure onto the site. Redesigned units provide the residents more spacious and enjoyable living spaces. The mega structure allows residents to expand their living space and provides shading against the harsh south african sun. Residents can inhabit the semi-open courtyard space protected by the shading devices.
