Highlights of STOCKHOLMIA 2019

The largest exhibition stand in the long tradition of Heinrich Koehler was set up together with the four sister companies in the Global Philatelic Network. At STOCKHOLMIA 2019 (28 May - 2 June 2019), Heinrich Koehler ‘s team welcomed many collectors from all over the world. The main focus of the stand was to publicise the sale of the ERIVAN collection, which is one of the most valuable collections in the world. A “Wall of Fame” showed some of the most important items of German States philately. The first auctions of the ERIVAN collection could be closely viewed in the viewing area setup in the style of a collector’s room. Great philatelic personalities of history such as Philipp von Ferrary, Maurice Burrus and John R. Boker decorated the walls. In the library, the latest publications from the EDITION D‘OR and EDITION SPÉCIALE series of books could be admired. The “Home of great collectors” in Stockholm was a place with the feeling of a private environment and at the same time the starting point for many other activities.

With a live-image camera transmitting to a huge screen and additionally recorded photos, it was possible to be very close to these stories and emotions.

Baden error of colour sold for 1.26 euros The legendary Baden error of colour, the icon of German philately, was the highlight of the first auction of exquisite treasures of the German States from the ERIVAN collection.

On 8 June 2019 a collector from Germany purchased the rarity for 1.26 million euros at the Grandhotel Nassauer Hof. This makes the Baden error the most valuable German stamp! “No other German stamp has been sold for a seven-figure sum. A record for Germany”, said the auctioneer and managing partner of the Heinrich Koehler auction house, Dieter Michelson, directly after the auction.

Another first-class rarity, the Oldenburg block of 1859, comprising twelve copies of the 1/3 groschen black on green (Lot 158), was sold for 320,000 euros (starting price: 150,000 euros).

In total, the 330 lots that came under the hammer in Wiesbaden were able to double their starting prices with an increase of almost 4 million euros. Collectors were already expecting a great deal of interest in advance – but in the end the sale exceeded all expectations. “Collectors and dealers from all over the world were extremely motivated and the bids increased in intensive competitive bidding between room, telephone and online bidders, sometimes to sensational heights”, as Tobias Huylmans, Managing Director of the Heinrich Koehler auction house, described the sale afterwards.

In addition to various other five-figure and six-figure realisations from Bavaria to Württemberg, the “smaller” lots with starting prices in the three- and four-figure range also showed how much demand there was for the rare material on offer.

Without exception, the lots increased 2-fold, 3-fold, 4-fold and more several times and often reached amounts that even experts would not have expected.

The auction closed with an impressive 98.5 per cent of the lots sold.

Crown jewels and highlights of the German States with top results Apart from the undisputed highlight, the sale of the “Baden error of colour”, the auction provided many other top results.

Germany‘s first stamp, the Bavarian 1 kreuzer black, caused a sensation with the well-known “tête-bêche block”. This remarkable “jewel” of Bavarian philately increased to 500,000 euros (starting price: 200,000 euros).

The ERIVAN collection to be continued... “Historical moments in philately lie ahead. Over the next five years, the companies of the Global Philatelic Network, Heinrich Koehler in Wiesbaden, H.R. Harmer in New York and Corinphila Auctions in Zurich will have the honour of writing the crowning finale of Erivan Haub’s collection in the history book of philately,” says Karl Louis, also managing partner of the Heinrich Koehler Auction House.The next auction of the German States from the ERIVAN collection will take place in Wiesbaden on 14 December 2019.
