Health & Safety Measures

It takes a perfectly orchestrated effort to balance the schedules, logistics, and operations of the 200+ members of our Heifetz summer community. For our students especially, this is an opportunity that they anticipate (and for which their families budget) all year long. And so, while we cannot control every variable during such a dynamic program, we intend to take every precaution available to mitigate the risks associated with the ongoing pandemic. For a student to miss one week of their time here in order to isolate should they get sick is not only a huge disappointment for them, it presents myriad logistical challenges, from ensuring their comfort and safety to reorganizing their chamber group activities and performances. The wellbeing of our community informs every decision we make, and so we thank our students for going above and beyond in accepting these safety measures, and appreciate you doing the same in order to ensure we can all enjoy a healthy and harmonious season together. Sincerely, The Heifetz Institute's Leadership Team

WHAT YOU NEED WHEN ATTENDING A HEIFETZ CONCERT OR EVENT:

A SELF SYMPTOM CHECK

We ask that patrons do a symptom check. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please do not attend a performance. If you cannot attend a performance due to illness, we are offering a flexible rescheduling and refund policy.

YOUR FAVORITE MASK

The Heifetz Institute is practicing universal masking for all patrons, staff, and volunteers—regardless of vaccination status. These steps, recommended by our medical advisors, provide the best layers of protection.*

PROOF OF VACCINATION AND YOUR PHOTO ID

Under the guidance of our medical partners, and in order to provide the safest experience possible for patrons and staff, the Heifetz Institute will require audiences to provide proof of full vaccination, paired with a valid photo ID, to attend concerts. If you are unable to be vaccinated due to a sincerely held religious belief, a medical condition, or because you are under age 5—we will accept proof of a negative NAAT or PCR COVID test (taken no more than 72 hours prior to your attendance), paired with a valid photo ID.

* Masks are not required at outdoor events, though are recommended for individuals at higher risk of severe illness if they cannot maintain distance from others

Greetings and Welcome to the Heifetz Institute 2022!

As you read through this program book, you are peering into a living legacy that is created and shared at the Heifetz Institute each summer. Twenty-six years ago, Daniel Heifetz founded an institute based upon a generosity of spirit and artistic mastery that aimed not only to give young artists the most expert guidance on their instruments, but also to communicate the magic of music when shared together in this concert setting.

Our legendary Instrumental faculty brings a wealth of experience in making such music that carries us away, and that knowledge and craft is passed on to the young artists through lessons and coachings. The incredible Performance & Communication Training faculty assembled by Daniel Pettrow widens the scope of what these young artists discover within themselves through acting, speaking, movement, yoga, and more. We all together guide them to feel how much is possible, how much they have to give, and how they are encouraged to rise to their most spectacular self. When they take these cues and fly, fly, fly with that possibility, the results are truly breathtaking! How lucky we are to have the opportunity to take all of this in.

My hope is that these words could convey at a distance what all this signifies, but I know that here and now there is no distance at all! As you hold this book and open your ears to what unfolds in every concert this season, it is as if you have spread a sail that is about to catch the fabulous winds of every one of these efforts. We will ride this wind together through the summer, and I am already happy to think where it may take us!

Nicholas Kitchen Artistic Director

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Heifetz International Music Institute, it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to our 2022 season. For the past two summers, the Institute has pioneered groundbreaking programs born of necessity—an “all virtual” summer in 2020, and a “hybrid program” in 2021, with senior students splitting their summer between on-site activities in Staunton and online instruction. But this summer, the Institute is back in Staunton in full force, with a complete complement of world-class faculty and exceptionally talented students from around the world. We are thrilled that you can be part of this triumphal return.

While the past two years have been challenging in many ways, the Institute has continued to develop and grow as an organization, and we have incorporated many new learnings into our programs. We have expanded our commitment to and initiatives around diversity, equity and inclusion; we have further refined our unique communications curriculum; and, through the generosity of many supporters like you, and the steadfast support of our Board, we have enhanced the Institute’s scholarship funding, enabling us to attract and admit the highest quality students regardless of financial need.

I would like to especially thank our capable and professional leadership team: President & CEO Benjamin Roe; Artistic Director Nicholas Kitchen; Director of Programming and Operations Claudia Encinas; Development and Marketing Manager Andrew Green; and Accounts and Logistics Manager Cameron Daly. They have sustained the Institute through trying times and are poised to take it to an even more glorious future.

I sincerely hope you enjoy tonight’s concert and will sample as many offerings as you can from our Festival of Concerts, 2022 edition—a schedule of events to rival or surpass anything we have ever done. You will have the opportunity to experience the world-renowned artistry of our virtuosic Heifetz Institute faculty, breathtaking performances by Heifetz students, and repertoire ranging from classics to new discoveries, including the inevitable surprises of a Saturday night Heifetz Hootenanny. And don’t miss the new series of Junior Division Showcases we are instituting on Saturday afternoons this year, where you will be dazzled by the artistry of promising talents as young as 9 years old.

Thank you for coming tonight, and for your support of the Institute and its students, faculty and staff. We’re so happy to have you as part of the Heifetz community.

Bruce E. Rosenblum Chairman, Board of Directors Heifetz International Music Institute

Dear Heifetz audience members,

The Institute has done a remarkable job of keeping us connected through difficult times. Yet, nothing is more exciting than a full season of wonderful music played by gifted Heifetz students and faculty. We in the larger audience are fortunate to again be an integral part of this extraordinary venture.

Thank you for continuing your support and your appreciation of all the Institute has to offer.

Sincerely,

Christopher Little Chair, Community Advisory Council Heifetz International Music Institute

Dear Friends:

This is a milestone year as Mary Baldwin University and the Heifetz International Music Institute celebrate a decade of partnership. In the summer of 2012, Mary Baldwin welcomed Heifetz to Staunton and our campus. That first summer was very special, as our campus transformed into a vibrant hub of performances, studios, communication training, and community engagement.

These ensuing ten years have brought transformational evolution both to Mary Baldwin and to the Heifetz Institute. Mary Baldwin celebrated 175 years and became a university, opened a new campus for the Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences, became fully coeducational, expanded other new programs, garnered record enrollment, and exceeded fundraising goals. Heifetz International Music Institute has undergone a similar evolution in programmatic expansion, enrollment, fundraising and support. We have been partners in these parallel developments.

Together, we join in our commitment to this community of Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County as our national reputation as a region of educational, cultural, and artistic prominence rises. We are grateful for this transformational partnership and look forward to our next decade together.

Sincerely,

Dr. Pamela R. Fox President and Professor of Music Mary Baldwin University

Dear Participants, Teachers and Friends,

Welcome to the 26th Season of Heifetz InternationalMusic Institute's Summer Program at Mary Baldwin University. Virginia is proud to host this annual event.

I am grateful to the Institute for their offering of many exciting opportunities for you to share your talent around the Commonwealth. I am especially pleased that the Board of Directors, Advisory Council and staff have put an enormous amount of effort into ensuring that your experience is meaningful and well-rounded by providing, among others, Performance and Communication training, and the HEIR Heifetz in Residence Programs in an atmosphere that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion for all participants.

In spite of the Covid health care epidemic, Heifetz did not close its doors but rather converted its formatting to provide an online program in 2020 and a hybrid program in 2021 to include both in-person and online participation.

A special thank you to the many education and community partner organizations who provide generous donations for scholarship and tuition assistance to make this all possible.

It is my hope that you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to connect with your peers, learn from dedicated educators and to perfect your musical abilities. Virginia is a special place and we are thrilled that you are here!

Best wishes in the months and years to come.

Sincerely,

Timothy M. Kaine

The mission of the Institute is to develop the expressive potential of every performer through the innovative and crossdisciplinary Heifetz Performance & Communication Training. This method guides young musicians into becoming wellrounded, communicative artists by improving their technical agility and musicianship, self confidence, gestural and verbal communication skills, and leadership capacity both on and off stage.
