What sounds make a space?
Sounds of spaces have many conflicting meanings: they might be obnoxious, joyous, a sign of life, a sign of death, a home... Sounds make a space with their listeners (from humans to animals, to simply time itself).
In this evening-length performance, we explore the role of sound in spaces as well as reflect on the disappearance of sound. What happens when our world is destroyed and we have no more sounds, not only of nature but also of people and the artifacts they created that make a sound? It will be, and it was, up to the musicians and other listeners to make a world of sounds again.
Will they, the survivors of extinction events, the survivors of brutal restrictions on who and what may sound, return, and bring new sounds, to remake our world? I believe that we can only bring sounds back when we all become musicians— dreamers of sounds unheard by way of a commemoration of those sounds, and sound-makers, long extinct. Who gets to have a sound, be as sound, in these spaces we visit?
