LETTER FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER

2023 letter - As I reflect on this past year, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the Gallagher community. Coming together for the first Gallagher Global Leadership Summit in Vienna was a highlight of my lifetime. It was Jerry's dream to bring all the Scholar’s together in one location, and seeing his dream come to life was really special. Between the global connections made amongst Scholars, the countless stories shared by Scholars Leading Where You Are, and the energy on the dance floor, it is clear Gallagher Scholars are making an impact in the world. I hope that you can experience a glimpse of the variety of ways Scholars are making an impact in the pages ahead.

With gratitude,

Ellen Gallagher Gallagher Foundation Co-Founder

GALLAGHER BRAND REFRESH

In 2024, we decided it was time to refresh the original Gallagher Foundation logo as we aim to grow our global impact and our Scholar community.

Our original logo holds a lot of meaning to our community. Our goal was to keep a number of similarities to the original logo, while updating the overall look and style that stays true to our mission and values.

The tree symbolizes strength, longevity, and wisdom. The doves flying over the tree symbolize peace. The book from which the tree grows conveys knowledge and learning and it is open to symbolize that knowledge is freely shared. The new logo incudes an arch with the Gallagher Foundation tagline, “Peace and Prosperity Through Education”. The words “Gallagher Foundation” are included next to the illustrative logo.

The new logo and brand colors launched on our website and social media January 6, 2025. The mission and values of the Gallagher Foundation will continue to be conveyed through our updated logo and brand colors in the years to come.

LEADERSHIP

Leadership is foundational to the Gallagher Mission. Scholars are challenged to develop their leadership skills while at university and beyond. Leadership Summits held in our programs bring current and graduated Scholars together to continue to hone their leadership expertise and learn from each other.

LEADERSHIPSUMMITMEXICO THEME:ETHICALANDTOLERANTLEADERSHIP

The Gallagher Mexico community held their Leadership Summit in December with current Scholars and over 20 graduated Scholars in attendance They spent the day focusing on Ethical and Tolerant leadership and team work and examined the traits within their own lives.

An intergenerational panel provided multiple perspectives and thought provoking discussion. Held the day after classes ended for the semester, the leadership summit was a great way to bring the current and graduated Scholars together.

Special thanks to the graduated Scholars who were part of the planning committee.

LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP SUMMIT SOUTH AFRICA

THEME: VISIONARY

LEADERSHIP: INNOVATE - CONNECT - IMPACT

The Leadership Summit in South Africa was held in September, hosted by the School of Design Thinking at UCT. The Design Thinking Dash was a cornerstone of the summit, offering a dynamic exploration of creative problem-solving. Scholars gained practical tools to approach challenges with creativity and innovation, igniting meaningful discussions on applying these principles across diverse disciplines. The hands-on, interactive format exemplified the pioneering mindset of the d-School, equipping attendees to think boldly and act strategically.

The graduate-led Q&A session was a standout element, offering Scholars an invaluable opportunity to tap into the experience and insights of the graduates. The dialogue was rich, illuminating pathways for personal growth and professional excellence. Scholars left empowered with actionable advice and a clearer sense of direction for their future endeavors.

Current scholars enthusiastically connected with graduates, forging meaningful relationships that bridged personal and professional spheres. These exchanges fostered mentorship, inspiration, and a shared vision for impactful leadership.

COMMUNITY

In June of 2024, our program in Turkey came together to celebrate the Turkish program, the Gallagher Foundation community, and the final group of Scholars who graduated from Boğaziçi University. Special thanks to Enes Koşar and Merve Bozkurt for coordinating the event.

The Foundation will continue to invest in and build the Turkish graduate community. All 70 Gallagher graduated Scholars from Turkey will always be part of the Gallagher family. “Once a Gallagher Scholar, always a Gallagher Scholar.”

COMMUNITY

Community has always been an important part of the Gallagher Foundation program Current Scholars rely on the Gallagher community at university, benefiting from the support of their peers and graduated Scholars who provide mentoring and support.

Over the past couple of years, the Foundation has committed to strengthening the connections within the graduated Scholar community as well. The Gallagher Global Leadership Summit in 2023 served as a launch for the development of connections within our graduated Scholar community, and our continued focus on graduated Scholar programming will provide opportunities for knowledge sharing, leadership growth and connection with other Gallagher graduated and current Scholars.

In July, we hosted our first Graduated Scholar Global Virtual Event, Connect with Gallaghers. After a brief update on the Foundation, the graduated Scholars, staff and members of the Gallagher Board of Directors who attended were sent to breakout rooms to meet each other and connect. For the final breakout session, participants had the opportunity to select a group to join based on an area of interest.

Our next Graduated Scholar Global Virtual Event featuring Harry M. Jansen Kraemer, Jr. speaking on Ethical Leadership will be on January 19

Graduated Scholars can register for the event by clicking on the invitation here.

We look forward to another connection event in July 2025.

IMPACT

Carlos Omar Ibarra Lopez (Mexico 2010) remembers the mission statement he included in his Gallagher Foundation scholarship application - it focused on working toward solving climate changes. More than 14 years later he is doing just that Carlos works on the Global Corporate Strategy team at CEMEX, a building materials company based in Mexico with a presence in many countries, serving as part of the allocation team overseeing the U.S. region and as the global lead for investments in the decarbonization roadmap to achieve CEMEX’s climate targets.

In the 10 years since his graduation from ITESM, Carlos has completed a Master of Environmental Management program at the Yale School of the Environment and has worked at various organizations, including Patagonia, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Mexican government's negotiating delegation at the 25th C on International Climate Finance t ss and environmental strategy w EMEX.

Carlos believes that the support he received from the Gallagher community was even more beneficial to helping him achieve his goals than the financial support he received from the Foundation.

“Having a network of people rooting for me and guiding me during my time at ITESM, sometimes believing in me even more than I did, was invaluable. They encouraged me and still do, to make the most of the opportunity and privilege I was awarded. The impact of everything I do, both in my job and with the people around me, is inherently a result of being a Gallagher Scholar. This influence is as tangible as the Gallagher Foundation plaque next to my desk in my office.”

Carlos and his wife, Maggie, live in Washington, DC with their two dogs. They enjoy spending time in the mountains, on a short hike or a more challenging trek, like a recent trip they completed in Slovenia and Italy.

GLOBAL CONNECTIONS

Our graduated Scholars have been connecting across the world!

South African graduated Scholar, Ntoetse Lerotholi (2011) reached out to Mexican Scholars in the GF Global WhatsApp group when she was traveling to Mexico City. Lando Valencia (2006) and Natalie Pérez (2020) met her for dinner.

Work took South African graduated Scholar, Amy Gennison (2016) to Istanbul for several months. She met many of the Turkish Scholars at the Graduation Dinner and joined recent graduated Scholar, Canan Balkan (2020), and GF President, Megan Prindiville for breakfast and sightseeing.

After meeting at the GF Global Leadership Summit in 2023, Fernanda Tello (Mexico 2006) and Sila Bastürk (Turkey 2011) met for dinner with their partners, Gucum and Rafael in Toronto where they all live.
