Heffel has known West Vancouver artist Ross Penhall since the 1970’s, both personally and professionally. Throughout this extended time Heffel has championed Ross’s growth and development towards his achievement as a major West Coast painter. One can trace his development in the evolution of West Coast Modernism through such artistic giants as Emily Carr, W.P. Weston, Gordon Smith, Jack Shadbolt and Takao Tanabe. In Ross’s current exhibition New Works at Heffel Vancouver, he has taken the canvas beyond West Coast landscape painting into the sublime—with a touch of the surreal. A slight crack in the clouds for example, can double perhaps as a waterfall when you let Ross’s magic release your mind to explore.

Ross uses his own photography and plein-air studies as a basis for his artwork. He selectively highlights the natural elements that capture his attention and manipulates the view to create a composition that is heavily adapted, but still bears resemblance to the original scene.

Ross credits the work of artists A. J. Casson and the Group of Seven, Edward Hopper, Grant Wood and Wayne Thiebaud for inspiring his quest to explore the architectural

space and light of the landscape. Additionally, the rhythmic shapes and colours in the work of Georgia O’Keefe have also been a strong influence. Nevertheless, the greatest influence on Ross’s life and art has been living in the high-contrast hillsides of Vancouver’s North Shore.

Ross is a disciplined artist who has exhibited annually since 1995. His work can be found in numerous private, corporate and public collections in the United States and in Canada.

Heffel is very proud and excited to share our passion for the works to be discovered by all in this major exhibition. We look forward to the release of these dramatic works into their new collections bundled with many years of appreciation and discovery.

A R TI S T S TATE M ENT A slow, steady, consistent, glacial pace of hours of oil painting has led to the current evolution and renewal of my style and landscape images.

Paradoxically, these changes on canvas have led to a transformation in my professional representation.

I am absolutely honoured and thrilled to be represented and exhibited by Heffel.
