FY25 Report of Giving

Page 1

JULY 1, 2024 TO JUNE 30, 2025

If you have been watching closely over the past few years, you may have noticed the phrase “Rooted in Maine, We Cultivate Trailblazers” appearing more and more, both here on campus and in communications from The Academy. It’s posted in every building, it shows up in our emails and social media posts, and it’s even on many of the t-shirts that our students wear to class each day. We are occasionally asked about the origin and meaning of this six-word tagline — our Purpose Statement.

Our Purpose Statement was created in the fall and winter of 2022–2023, through a series of meetings on campus. Our faculty provided the bulk of the energy and inspiration for these words, after being encouraged to authentically express who we are as an institution. As we boiled our statement down to the essence, we kept in mind the need to be clear about what we do while also being true to who we are. In the end, we were able to distill our work into six deliberate, powerful words. Each word has meaning for us:

Rooted: We have been growing and thriving on this campus and this land since 1804. We have meaningful traditions that connect us to our past. Standing among the oldest independent schools in New England, we have a strong foundation on which to build in our third century of existence.

In: We’re all in! We are engaged, interested, and eager to connect with our community. We see each other, we support each other, and we contribute to the life of the school.

Maine: We embrace all that Maine has to offer — hiking and skiing in the rugged mountains; wandering on paths through woods; scrambling up rocks and trees; absorbing the stillness of a pond at sunrise; marveling at the glorious chaos of colors on the trees in autumn; exploring the charm of coastal towns and inland villages; exhilarating at the sight of blue skies in all seasons.

We: We are an intentionally close community, where relationships are reinforced through shared experiences, and where every person is inspired to share the wealth of their talents and expertise within the broader population.

We recognize the individual as the base of the community and the community as the foundation of the individual. We are inclusive, we work together, we affirm each other. This is the way we wish to live at Hebron — celebrating that we are a community first and foremost.

Cultivate: We deliberately nurture our community on campus, creating the physical and emotional spaces for our students and faculty to flourish. With openness, friendliness, and a cheerful smile, we foster a welcoming culture that both provides the substance needed for growth and the challenge necessary to stimulate development.

Trailblazers: We guide our students to find their own path, setting them up to navigate their future with confidence. By supporting students to find their authentic voice, explore their interests with passion, search for connections between academic disciplines, and pioneer their own approaches to solving unique problems, we help individuals traverse the vicissitudes of adolescence with purpose and direction.

As you can see, we packed a lot of information into a few short words! These six individual words combine to form a powerful statement of who we are and what our community values. The result has been a statement that guides our decisions and our actions each and every day. Hopefully the next time you see our Purpose Statement, “Rooted in Maine, We Cultivate Trailblazers,” you will feel both a sense of pride and an understanding of the powerful meaning behind those words.

With all best wishes,

Charis L. Adams

As Hebron’s new Director of Advancement, I am continually inspired by the generosity, care, and shared Hebron pride that defines this community. Even in my short time here, I have seen how deeply people love this school and how their commitment fuels its continued strength. That spirit of connection and purpose is what makes Hebron so remarkable — a place where tradition, innovation, and heart come together in lasting ways.

I am truly pleased to share the 2024–2025 Report of Giving. Though I was not here for the fundraising year reflected in this report, I can already see the results of your support everywhere on campus. Your generosity sustains an environment where students are encouraged to think boldly, where teachers are empowered to inspire, and where community thrives. Each gift adds another turn to the flywheel of progress, building momentum that moves Hebron confidently into the future.

This year’s report comes at an important time and your commitment to Hebron Academy matters. It makes the school stronger today and signals that Hebron’s future is worth building. Philanthropy here does more than meet needs. It helps talented students thrive, it keeps exceptional educators in our classrooms, and it inspires others to join in supporting a school that continues to shape lives. Philanthropy is what transforms vision into reality. It is the catalyst for changemaking across our campus, creating the conditions for students and faculty to imagine new possibilities and pursue them with purpose. Together, we are ensuring that Hebron remains a place of growth, integrity, and opportunity for generations to come.

As we recognize the donors listed in this report, we offer our sincere thanks. Your investment honors Hebron’s past, strengthens its present, and prepares the way for the years ahead. We are grateful for your belief in this school and for the stability and momentum your generosity makes possible.

With gratitude and excitement,

While every effort has been made to accurately recognize your generosity in this report, we sincerely apologize for any errors or omissions. If you notice a discrepancy in your name, your giving, or how you are listed, please contact Charis Adams directly at cadams@hebronacademy.org so we may correct it.

ROOTED IN GRATITUDE

For Molly Skelton ’21, Hebron Academy has always meant opportunity and connection. When she reflects on her time as a student, one thing stands out: the generosity that made her experience possible. “If it weren’t for financial aid, I wouldn’t have been able to attend Hebron,” she says. “That’s true for so many of us.”

That opportunity opened doors to belonging, lasting relationships, and memorable adventures. Among her favorite experiences were the piano lessons she and her sister taught to the children of English teacher Barbara Waterman, a connection that continues to this day. “Through her, I’ve stayed in touch with what’s happening at the school; it’s been really special.”

Her sense of gratitude also inspires her to give back. “Every time I donate, I debate where my gift should go,” she laughs. She often chooses “where the need is greatest” because she values all aspects of Hebron, its academics, athletics, and people. She is especially passionate about supporting faculty and academic programs, while recognizing that athletics draw many students to campus. “Sports often bring students here, and then they fall in love with the academics and the community. Both are essential to what makes Hebron special.”

Her years at Hebron challenged and prepared her well. “Those long AP labs everyone complained about were the best preparation for college,” she says. Majoring in biology, she discovered a love of learning and exploration. Now working at an orthodontic practice in Falmouth, she’s gaining hands-on experience as she prepares for dental school.

Though life has taken her beyond Hebron’s campus, her roots remain strong. Nearly her entire family has ties to the Academy, reinforcing what she values most: “It’s all about community.”

Bill Skelton ’86 and Molly Skelton ’21. Both received the Ernest Sherman Award, 35 years apart.

Leading with Purpose

When David Ruiz arrived in Maine in 2020, he found Hebron Academy at a pivotal moment and, in many ways, it found him. Drawn by the school’s mission and the possibilities of a vibrant 6–12 boarding and day community, he joined Hebron first as Dean of Students before becoming Director of the Albert Lepage ’65 Center for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Even in the uncertainty of the early pandemic, he recognized Hebron as a place grounded in care, connection, and purpose. “The commitment of our faculty to academic excellence and matters of equity and social justice. Our Graduates leave Hebron, not only with a quality education, but with a renewed sense of purpose and service for all people,” he says. “Our students are inspirational.”

Ruiz sees Hebron’s heartbeat most clearly in everyday moments, especially during The Last Word at Morning Meeting. The reflections students share, he says, reveal the authenticity of their Hebron journeys: expressions of gratitude, belonging, and the feeling of home. As a lifelong educator, he also treasures time in the classroom, watching former 8th-grade students grow into thoughtful leaders. “I’m really proud of all of them,” he adds.

As a faculty donor to the Annual Fund, Ruiz’s commitment is deeply personal. Having received financial support as a student himself, he views giving as an act of gratitude. “Paying it forward is my way of saying thanks to those who believed in me, and those who came before and after me.” Philanthropy, he notes, is essential to maintaining the residential, academic, and athletic programs that make Hebron exceptional, and to ensuring access for talented students from around the world.

Looking ahead, Ruiz is optimistic. “Hebron’s future is bright as long as we continue providing an exceptional experience,” he says. “Students who thrive here will help ensure that continues for generations.”

Planned Giving

You don’t need to choose between providing for your loved ones and supporting Hebron Academy. You can make a difference at Hebron while reducing taxes for you and your heirs by including the Academy in your estate planning. With thoughtful consideration, estate gifts preserve money for your family and, in some cases, may actually boost an inheritance.

BENEFICIARY DESIGNATIONS

Beneficiary designations are the easiest way to leave a legacy. They are made by assigning a percentage of assets to Hebron using a form that is separate from your will or living trust—hence no need to engage legal counsel. These gifts pass outside of probate, directly to Hebron.

Designations can be made on a variety of financial instruments, including:

•  Retirement accounts

•  Investment accounts

•  Bank accounts

•  Donor-advised funds (a/k/a charitable giving account)

•  Life insurance policies

Designations on retirement accounts can be a tax savvy way to leave a provision for Hebron and other nonprofits you care about, as these assets pass tax-free to charity, while non-spouse heirs will pay income tax on the assets.

IRA ASSETS – GREAT FOR CURRENT, ANNUAL GIFTS

The IRA Charitable Rollover allows individuals who are 70.5 years old or older to direct qualified charitable distributions (QCD) from their IRA account to qualified domestic charities each tax year, up to an annual limit of $100,000.

Rollover donors can avoid taking their Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) or lessen the income they must recognize from their RMD, by directing their IRA Plan Administer to make a QCD to Hebron. Because QCDs go directly from the Plan Administrator to the donor’s designated charity, the donor does not recognize any income from their tax-deferred IRA and cannot take a tax-deduction for the gift.

BEQUESTS AND DESIGNATIONS

Bequests and beneficiary designations signify what is important to you and affirm the values you consider most essential. These revocable gifts provide ways to support future generations of Hebron students that have no effect on your current finances.

Bequests

A bequest is a gift anyone can afford, and it offers many options for leaving a gift that is meaningful to you. Here are four ways to consider making a bequest to Hebron

•  Specify an amount of money

•  Specify a percentage of your estate

•  Identify specific gifts such as shares of stock; art; real estate; personal property

•  Specify the remainder (all or a percentage) of your estate after all debts, charges, and other bequests have been honored

For questions or to learn more about how you can document your planned gift for Hebron Academy, please contact Charis L. Adams, Director of Advancement: cadams@hebronacademy.org
