We can say with pride that we have stayed true to our original mission to cherish and honor our elders, by respecting and supporting their independence, spiritual vigor, dignity, and choice in how they live their lives as they grow older. Why? Because our mission never gets old.

Since the beginning, Hebrew SeniorLife has been setting the standard for senior care. For generations, seniors and their families have turned to us for help — whether they’re in crisis or simply exploring options as their needs for care and support change with age. When that happens, every senior should be able to access the very best care — and we’re committed to providing it for decades to come.

Because providing the quality of care seniors need to live their best lives never gets old.

We have never rested on our laurels. And we’ve never been satisfied with the status quo when it comes to the services we provide — we’re always asking ourselves, what more can we do?

Because questioning and reexamination never gets old.

Recently, we launched a number of initiatives aimed at optimizing quality of life for seniors and families who rely on us today, and those who will be turning to us in increasing numbers in the future. Whether it’s new ways to care for seniors with memory problems and their families, services that protect seniors from abuse and neglect, or collaborations in research and teaching, now is the time to take action that will benefit older adults today and for generations to come.

Because seizing new opportunities to lead the way for seniors never gets old.

We’re launching our next major philanthropic campaign because we are poised to offer a bold response to the question — how can we help people age better, while easing the burden on families and the health care system? leadership... never gets old Investing in care for seniors One of the proudest moments of Jennifer Silver’s time as Hebrew SeniorLife Board Chair was the launch of Hebrew SeniorLife Hospice Care in 2013.

“Many people had been working on it for years, so being able to extend such a critical service to seniors and families was so gratifying,” she says.

“Hospice provides patients, families, and loved ones the important gift of quality time at the end of life.”

Jennifer first became familiar with Hebrew SeniorLife’s exceptional care when her grandmother spent the last year of her life at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston in the 1990s.

Today, she describes HSL as “a compassionate, innovative, and essential leader in advocating for our seniors.” She also cites research and the education of future geriatricians as powerful ways that HSL is redefining aging.

Jennifer’s commitment to hospice continued after her board tenure ended. She is a member of HSL’s Hospice Visiting Committee, serving as chair from 2014 to 2015. The visiting committee is a volunteer advisory committee whose members serve as a resource to the hospice program and as ambassadors for hospice in the community.

Jennifer, who is founder and managing partner at Redwood Investments, gives to HSL because of the societal impact she can have through her philanthropy. She knows that her leadership giving to Hebrew SeniorLife’s Visionaries Fund will be used wisely to advance critical programs.

generosity... never gets old Helping vulnerable seniors Margot Pyle believes in supporting “compassionate choices.” A longtime supporter of human services organizations, Margot first got involved with Hebrew SeniorLife nine years ago when the NewBridge on the Charles campus was being developed. As a longtime Dedham resident, she was instrumental as an advocate for the creation of a vibrant senior living community because she knew it would set a new standard.

Margot first lent her philanthropic support to Hebrew SeniorLife’s hospice program, realizing how important such a program can be to families caring for a loved one. Most recently, she extended her support to help create a Center for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and Neglect at Hebrew SeniorLife. “I feel very strongly that we have an obligation to help vulnerable people in need,” she says.

“Hebrew SeniorLife has an outstanding reputation,” she says. “I particularly liked the idea of a multigenerational campus…I am proud to support an organization that is run well and has programs that make a difference.”

As a compassionate leader and innovator in senior care and aging, Hebrew SeniorLife has found there is a great need for a comprehensive program to fill the void in elder abuse prevention as well as victim supports and services. Our vision includes providing emergency shelter

as well as legal, financial, and other support services to victims. Margot feels strongly that educating the public and building awareness of the growing problem, and offering training and screening tools for health care and non-health care professionals who interact frequently with seniors, will help connect those in need with much-needed services. “I choose to support things that I feel very strongly about,” she says.

“Elder abuse prevention is an area I felt was worthy of support.”

Rick is president of the Schochet Companies, developers, owners, and managers of affordable housing throughout New England. “My vocation is in affordable housing. And that’s been my passion for a long time.”

Rick, who serves on HSL’s Development and Senior Living committees as well as the Real Estate task force, agrees with his wife Gabrielle that the staff at HSL actively engages its seniors at living life. “Earlier generations weren’t living as long or in as good physical health as they are today,” says Gabrielle. “Like Rick’s dad, who lives at Orchard Cove, seniors want to be active and walk and work out and make friends, and not just sit around…they want to take advantage of every moment.” Gabrielle jokes that Rick’s dad is “up later than we are.” “It’s fantastic,” adds Rick. “He’s incredibly busy and engaged, and that’s great.”

The Henkens are currently supporting cutting-edge research at the Institute for Aging Research.

“My family has been deeply affected by Parkinson’s disease, so Dr. Brad Manor’s research on noninvasive brain stimulation to help improve balance and cognition for individuals with Parkinson’s disease really struck a chord with me,” says Rick. “Innovation and research at HSL will help us all live better, more meaningful and active lives as we age.”

friendship... never gets old Finding strength in community Walking through NewBridge on the Charles, wearing his signature shorts – even in the middle of winter – Jay Fialkow can barely go five feet without being stopped and greeted warmly by friends. There’s a reason he’s known as “the mayor of NewBridge.”

When Jay and his late wife, Jane, moved to NewBridge in 2010, they were struck by how many people they already knew. “As friendly as you were with people prior to moving, you become even more intimate here,” Jay says.

“And there are people you’ve never met before and in six months they become your very best friends.”

This social structure became even more important as Jane’s dementia got worse. “She was never alone,” Jay recalls.

After Jane’s death in 2013, Jay began to think of ways that he could outwardly honor her memory. From his deep involvement at NewBridge, including service on the Finance and Food Committees, Jay knew the impact of philanthropy. So he decided to make a bequest from his NewBridge entrance fee to strengthen a community he cares so much about. In recognition of his generosity, a new bus at NewBridge was inscribed with the words “Everybody loves Jane.” This was fitting given Jane’s love of connecting to people and activities around campus.

The Fialkows’ children – David Fialkow, Debby Zabludowski, and Linda Sternberg (pictured at left) – learned the importance of community involvement from their parents. Linda is a special education teacher and volunteers with local

nonprofits. She calls NewBridge “the greatest gift to children and families.” Debby, who lives in Florida, is also a teacher and volunteer.

David is founder of venture capital firm General Catalyst and a producer of the Oscar-winning documentary Icarus. In 2017, David and his wife Nina made a leadership gift to HSL’s new Center for Memory Health. This gift will honor Jane by helping other seniors and families who are struggling with dementia.

Through their philanthropy and volunteerism, the Fialkow family has ensured that the spirit of community and friendship that’s been so important to their lives will endure.

EngAGE 2017 was an evening to remember. The annual signature event, attended by nearly 400 people, was held on November 7, 2017, raising $1.25 million — a new record for the event. The event featured Meredith Vieira, Emmy Award-winning host, executive producer, and former co-anchor of the Today show, along with Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award winner Rita Moreno. WBZ-TV’s Dr. Mallika Marshall also participated in the event, interviewing Vieira in front of the EngAGE audience.

Vieira and Moreno led conversations on healthy aging, with a particular emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease, a subject close to Vieira’s heart. Dr. Gary Epstein-Lubow, medical director of Hebrew SeniorLife’s Center for Memory Health, also spoke at the event. EngAGE 2018 will be held on November 8 at the Revere Hotel in Boston.

2017 Hebrew SeniorLife ended fiscal year 2017 with a modest operating cash flow loss of approximately $795,000, as consolidated operating expenditures exceeded operating revenues. Such revenues, however, excluded distributions from the refinancing of our Jack Satter House in Revere and Goldman Family Residences in Brookline. Proceeds from these transactions drove a 26 percent increase in our aggregate investment pools from $126 to $159 million.

Operating revenues for fiscal year 2017 of $227 million were similar to the prior year, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) also remained flat at $21 million. This performance was achieved despite the fact that Hebrew Rehabilitation Center (HRC) did not benefit from a rate increase in MassHealth reimbursement in fiscal year 2017.

Prudent expense management, combined with higher revenues at NewBridge on the Charles Independent Living/Assisted Living (IL/AL), Orchard Cove, Center Communities of Brookline, Jack Satter House, and Simon C. Fireman Community offset the HRC shortfall.

Operating expenses increased by 1.8 percent in fiscal 2017 due to increased costs related to salaries and benefits. Capital expenditures also increased in fiscal 2017 due to higher investment at the NewBridge campus and the pilot project renovation in Roslindale.
