You may have missed them, but a team of scientists from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU); including, Dr Haimin Yao (Associate Professor) and Andre E. Vellwock (PhD Student), have been conducting tests to help reduce that barnacle build up on your boat bottoms. They call it biofouling…because they’re scientists.
What is biofouling? Biofouling is the unwanted attachment and growth of marine organisms, such as algae, tubeworms and barnacles on underwater surfaces. It is commonly seen in ship hulls, floating buoys and underwater ropes. Nowadays, this is combatted with biocidal coatings and frequent cleaning, creating a massive issue for the marine industry.
What’s the craic? Or rather lack of cracks…PolyU has developed specially designed surfaces that can avoid biofouling without the need to use biocidal chemicals. This eco-friendly solution works by modifying the surface topography with the addition of nano- and micrometre-sized features, which decrease the adhesion of unwanted organisms. HHYC has supported PolyU’s research by letting the team use our club facilities to perform field tests of samples. The samples are submerged in seawater for prolonged periods, and then the number of organisms attached to the surface is measured. The images below, taken after a three-week test in waters adjacent to the Club, clearly show that the PolyU sample with the specially designed topography has 83% less biofouling than the untreated flat surface.

生物結垢是什麼？ 生物結垢是指海洋生物如藻 類、管蟲和藤壺等在水下的 有害物體。它通常附於船體、 浮筒和水下繩索。如今，不 少人使用殺蟲劑頻繁清潔船隻，對海洋生態造成巨大的負面影響。
有什麼新發現？ 理大已研發一種經特別設計 的表層，船主無需使用殺菌 劑也可避免生物結垢。這種環保的方案是設計塗面的不 同粒狀形貌大小，減少有害生物的粘附。為支持理大的研究，研究小組使用會所的設施進行實地樣本測試。樣品在海水中浸泡很長一段時間， 然後測量附著在表面的生物 數量。

Hong Kong is arguably one of the busiest sailing scenes in the world. All of Hong Kong’s yacht clubs and government watersports centres are organising races every weekend. Each event needs a Race Officer (RO) and a team of Assistant Race Officers (AROs), as well as Mark Layers, to help with the running of races, recording results, providing safety measures to ensure every sailor makes it back to port.
Each sailing event also requires a knowledgeable race management team and numerous volunteers to provide a fun and safe sailing experience for all involved. Should you be interested in helping out or become a part of the race management team, there are a few ways to go about it.
香港可以說是世界上帆船運動最繁忙的地區之一。所有在香港的遊艇會和海上活動中都在每個週末組織比賽。每 項賽事都需要多名賽事主任（Race Officer 或 RO）和多名助 理賽事主任（ARO）以及放置標泡員（Mark Layers）來協 助進⾏比賽、記錄賽果，並提供安全措施，確保每名參賽選手安全回岸。

Getting started 從何入手
Contact the Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF), HHYC or any sailing club in Hong Kong to volunteer so you can get allocated a position to participate in any of the events. A volunteer usually gets placed on a committee boat. Don’t worry; if you have no or limited Race Control experience, you would be rostered with experienced ROs and given tasks as a results officer or some of the other positions in the image above.
HKSF and the sailing clubs also provide various introductory race management seminars and class race management training sessions for those who want to learn more and gain theoretical experience before volunteering. Needless to point out that having raced and gained actual racing experience will be of benefit to understanding what is happening wind-wise and on the racecourse, but experience is not an essential requirement. Courses available are advertised on the HKSF and sailing club websites.
The HKSF runs Level 1 Race Officer seminars from time to time. It is, however, the bigger sailing clubs in Hong Kong such as HHYC, RHKYC and ABC that offer seminars and courses for people with some RO experience. The Club Race Officer (CRO) course aims to educate interested parties in the basics of conducting consistent, fair and safe club racing events and covers topics including race documents, course selection and setting, starts, finishes, race monitoring and key RO decision making rationale. The seminars are conducted by National and International ROs, and information about these courses can be found on HKSF and sailing club websites.

While it falls predominately under the scope of the sailing clubs and watersports associations to get people started in race management and make them proficient Club Race Officers, it falls under the HKSF—as the national authority for the sport of sailing in Hong Kong—to provide National Race Officer (NRO) seminars locally.
The seminars are intended for experienced Club Race Officers (CROs) who wish to become a National Race Officer (NRO). These seminars aim to educate CROs in advanced principles of conducting consistent, fair and safe championship racing and other larger sailing events on a national and international scale. After attending the seminar and passing an exam, CROs then undergo three on-the-water assessments as an RO; if approved by HKSF, the NRO certificate will be issued. Revalidation also needs to take place every 48 months.
For further information, see the Race Management Programme on the HKSF website. The International Race Officer (IRO) seminars and accreditation are administered by World Sailing, the world governing body for the sport of sailing. As such, it is the highest level in the sport. It is not part of the HKSF Race Management Programme Scheme.
International-level accreditation is awarded to ROs who have demonstrated an excellent level of knowledge and application of World Sailing policies and procedures and shown a high level of sound judgement while executing their role. IROs will take on leadership roles at World Championship events and are eligible for selection to officiate at World Sailing World Cup events and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Like the NRO scheme, the seminar is followed by an exam and on-the-water assessment in four specified principles and four other events. Information can be found on the World Sailing website.
In summary, the pathway to becoming an RO, although it might seem daunting, long and tedious, is filled with fun and friendships made along the way, making the effort worth it. Race Management has room for many types of people and skillsets, and in the end, without all the volunteers there would be no racing.
