ON BEHALF OF THE SQUAD, THANK YOU FOR YOUR BRILLIANT SUPPORT IN 2021/22. We were all really disappointed after the Easter Monday defeat to Dunston. It was a local derby and we wanted to win it. It was a funny game - a stereotypical game of two halves. They were miles better than us in the first half and deserved to be 1-0 up. If we're being honest, we weren't good enough. With the way we played in the second half, we were frustrated to not get a draw. Certainly in the first 45, we barely got out of our own half.

In the second, we got a penalty which Olly Martin unfortunately missed. Once they went down to 10, we huffed and puffed but still couldn't create those gamewinning chances. I don't think the lads could've done much more to get that goal - we sent people forward, but it didn't happen and that's football. There were a couple of tired legs out there, but we didn't want to use that as an excuse because Dunston played on Saturday as well. It was really pleasing to see

Darren Lough get some minutes at the end. It's been a tough year for him, but it's come at a good time since he'll have a rest after today's game. It is a tough game today. It's the last game of the season, at home – we want to go out with a bang and what a perfect opportunity it is to do that. Cleethorpes are a team who've done well this season and are in the playoffs, so it's for us to go out there and make it about us, rather than about them.

GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO ISSUE 33 OF THE HORNETS AHEAD OF THE FINAL DAY. Having two games so close together was tough last weekend. In terms of Saturday against Ossett, we played really well and deserved to win. As soon as we went behind we turned things around, but we always looked in control. We were short on numbers at Dunston. It was a quick turnaround, but I don't think we played well enough to win the game. We could've stole a point with a penalty in the second half,

however our luck ran out. Overall, the team played decent over last weekend but I think the circumstances took their tole. I joined Hebburn after having a really bad year. I was suffering with lots of injuries - I went on trial in the National League but I had a pulled quad. I was really worried, I didn't think I could properly play again - I would be doing rehab then I'd pull another muscle. I've pretty much managed to stay fit since joining Hebburn so it's been excellent on

a personal note. It's important to end the season on a high today. The fans have been brilliant this season - they've turned out to all the games, home and away. It's important to put in a performance for them, and I'm sure we can get another good result against Cleethorpes.

NOTICEBOARD On Bank Holiday Monday, we'll be hosting a Community Celebration Day!

Hebburn Town will be opening our doors to The Green Energy Sports Ground on May 2 to the town of Hebburn and wider community of South Tyneside from 11:30am until 5pm. We've created the event to celebrate the fantastic achievements of the full club and wider community over the past 18 months, during a period where everyone has encountered the global pandemic but still managed to support each other in many ways. In addition to this, the club gained some fantastic success last year and created history in winning the Buildbase FA Vase Final at Wembley and secured promotion to the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division at a time when we couldn't really celebrate collectively, and we believe this event is a great opportunity to do so. The day will be a packed full of fun and we encourage families to come along, bring a picnic blanket, enjoy the weather and socialise as a community. The event will be opened and attended by the Mayoress of

South Tyneside, Cllr Pat Hay, with the first of its kind annual group photo of Hebburn Town taking place - around 1,000 players and staff will congregate onto the main pitch for this mass photo opportunity, demonstrating the scale of our community reach. Families can then enjoy music over the sound system whilst browsing some of the fantastic and well-known market stalls that are being represented by Food & Drink North East. There will be a small number of fairground rides available for smaller children with face painting also available throughout the day. At 2pm, we'll be showing a rerun of the iconic Buildbase FA Vase Final on the large outdoor screen and indoors screens within Hebburn Sports Club, with previous and existing club players in attendance to chat to supporters. The event is FREE entry for everyone, so come along and let's celebrate our community and football club together.

Dunston claimed a narrow victory over Hebburn Town on home soil in the Tyneside Derby. Chances proved hard to come by in the first period, with Richard Coulson receiving possession from the right and curling an effort into Mark Foden’s grasp on 15 minutes. In the 33rd minute, The Fed took the lead as Michael Fowler turned past his man and struck low in the back of the net. Seven minutes later, Jack Elliott drove a cross for Terry Galbraith to poke marginally wide for Chris Swailes’ side. Fowler then fired a shot past Foden at the front stick, but left-back Oliver Walters blocked off the line to prevent a second.

Ten minutes into the second 45, Coulson found the head of a free Galbraith at the near post, however the Dunston man nodded over at close-range. Seconds later, David Allasan capitalised on Connell’s mistake and won a penalty after being brought down by Craig Baxter, with the rightback seeing red in the process. Olly Martin stepped up for Hebburn’s first real chance of the game, but Connell saved well to his bottom left. Hebburn’s best effort from open play came on 80, as Tom Potter jinked inside and finessed inches over. The winger stepped up for a corner at the death, but Hebburn couldn’t take full advantage.

We delve into the club history of visitors Cleethorpes Town. Cleethorpes Town were founded as Lincolnshire Soccer School in 1998 and established a senior side five years later when they entered the Lincolnshire League and soon rebranded to their current name. The Owls won the Supplementary Cup in 2011, before winning the League and Challenge Cup double a year later, moving into the NCEL as a result. They went on to win the NCEL Division One title in 2014 and the NCEL League Cup in 2016, ahead of a historic 2016/17 season. Cleethorpes stormed their way to the NCEL title with a record-breaking 108 points and a 99-goal difference and won the Lincolnshire Senior Cup. That same season they made their way to Wembley for the FA Vase final, but lost 4-0 to our neighbours South Shields beneath the arch.

Dave Smith’s side currently sit in third place in the Pitching In Northern Premier League East Division table and will continue their season in the play-offs following this game, where they’ll be hoping to win promotion to the NPL Premier Division. A single point this afternoon would see Cleethorpes secure a home tie in the semi-finals of the play-offs, with Stockton Town currently three points below The Owls with a superior goal difference.

THE INSIDE INFO We meet Cleethorpes Town's Secretary, David Simpson, ahead of this afternoon's fixture.

I saw my first Owls' game in September 2014, an FA Cup qualifier against Carlton Town. Originally from Nottingham, I have always enjoyed nonleague football, so I thought I would go down to Clee to see what they were all about. They won the tie 3-2 with a last-minute winner and I was hooked! I have been behind the scenes helping for the last five years. Firstly, with the media and then as Secretary since 2019. Our aim was to finish in the top five, which we have achieved. So, we are all pleased and gearing up to give our best in the play-offs. We also had a decent run in the Emirates FA Cup, beating higher-ranked Hednesford and Alfreton Town along the way. Our top-scorer is Brody

Robertson, who is a real goal poacher and one to look out for. He will be an attacking threat alongside the trickery of Luke Lofts. Jordon Cooke and Ben Middleton have forged a formidable partnership in the centre of defence. Probably our most famous player though is veteran number nine, Scott Vernon. During his illustrious career, he scored the winning goal for Oldham that knocked Man City out of the Cup, as well as helping Aberdeen to silverware, in the shape of the Scottish League Cup. We need a point to make certain of a home semi-final in the play-offs. We have a very good away record but are yet to have a draw on the road. Therefore, I am going for 1-1; honours even!

Smith has guided his side to third in the table, and just needs a point to confirm a home semi-final tie. The tactician was assistant manager at The Owls as they reached the FA Vase final and gained promotion to tier eight. Smith took the hot seat in October 2018 following the resignation of Marcus Newell, and led Cleethorpes to the Lincolnshire Senior Cup.

Experienced goalkeeper Jackson signed for The Owls in August and has kept 14 clean sheets. From Doncaster, Jackson spent time with Bridlington Town before switching to Frickley Athletic. The 'keeper reunited with former captain Curtis Woodhouse at Gainsborough Trinity in May 2020, but departed the following season for Cleethorpes.

The hard-hitting centreback has played nearly every minute for Dave Smith's side in 2021/22. A product of Lincoln City, Cooke donned the shirt for Buxton and Worksop Town following his departure from The Imps. After a stint with North Ferriby, the defender moved to Stamford for three seasons but left due to work commitments.

The former Matlock Cleethorpes in the summer, plying his trade alongside Ben Middleton in the heart of defence.

MIDFIELD MAESTRO Alex Flett Owls stalwart Flett is the captain at Cleethorpes, having recently reached a decade at the club. The 29-year-old made his way through Bradford City's academy, debuting in the Football League after a loan stint at Ossett Town. He signed a professional deal with The Bantams, but decided to pursue a move to Brigg Town. Flett's Cleethorpes transfer came in January 2012, and he was appointed captain weeks before their 2017 FA Vase final against South Shields.

ONE TO WATCH

The 38-year-old frontman holds 32 Championship outings to his name. Hailing from Stockport, Vernon spent three seasons in Oldham Athletic's first team before another successful stint with Blackpool. The forward moved to Colchester United before joining Aberdeen in 2010, playing 128 times in Scotland's top tier. Following two years with Shrewsbury and Grimsby Town, Vernon switched to Cleethorpes in 2018 and has played around 100 games.

The Cleethorpes legend has hit 18 goals from 41 appearances this season. Robertson came through the ranks of Cleethorpes, and netted 41 times in 2014/15 to gain promotion to the eighth tier. The forward moved to Alfreton Town in the National League North in 2017, but his contract was cancelled via mutual consent following 18 games.

FROM THE ARCHIVES We relive our last encounter with Cleethorpes Town back in December.

The Hornets ended a sixgame winless run on a chilly Saturday afternoon on the road. A cagey start saw limited chances, until Martin first timed an effort off target from the edge of the area on 22 minutes. As a tight first half drew to a close, David Allasan was sent clean through on the right flank but struck past the post. Michael Richardson then stepped up to take a 20-yard free-kick, which whistled over the woodwork. On the 51 mark, a long shot from Sam Topliss was tipped just wide of the post by Mark Foden, before the shotstopper pulled off a spectacular save on 55. Just after the hour, Olly Martin broke the deadlock after powerfully heading home Dan Groves’ cross from a few yards out. Cleethorpes kept up the

pressure with 69 on the clock as a corner fell to Jordon Cooke, who volleyed wide after a deflection. With 10 to go, Hebburn secured their second through Robbie Spence. Allasan, making his second league start, whipped a cross in for the midfielder to poke past Birch inside the box. FOOTBALLING FIRSTS Midfielder Michael Richardson gives his Footballing Firsts in our final instalment of 2021/22. First memory? My dad had a Newcastle season ticket, so sitting in the stands with him watching Alan Shearer. First inspiration? Alan Shearer banging goals in for fun. First pair of boots? Probably a pair of Preds - I remember whipping in crosses with Beckham's champagne ones. First shirt? A Newcastle kit - there's a photo of me when I was two wearing the Brown Ale one. First manager? When I first got called up to Newcastle, it was Chris Hughton but Alan Pardew came in a few weeks later. When I went on loan, it was Russell Slade.

First game? I came on for Leyton Orient at Walsall away in League One. My first start was a derby away to Southend - I scored a header after 20 minutes but missed a penalty in the shootout. First goal? That goal in the EFL Cup against Southend. First celebration? I think I just ran off to the corner. My dad drove all the way down and sat with the Southend fans, so I remember looking at him and he couldn't celebrate. First cup? The Northumberland Senior Cup for Newcastle U23s, we beat Blyth Spartans at St James' Park.
