On behalf of Hebburn Town FC we would like wish all staff, players and supporters of Shildon AFC a very warm welcome for tonight’s Ebac Northern League Division One game.

And also a welcome back to our fans to the Green Energy Stadium for our first league match of the season.

This should be an absolute cracking game between two sides who competed at the top of the table last season.

Shildon actually did the double on us last season and proved to be a very good side with very good players. So we’re expecting a very tough game tonight which will not be made any easier coming on the back of our 580 mile round trip on Saturday when we played 120 minutes to progress to the FA Vase final.

It is what it is though so we will patch the lads up and go again. It’s so important that we now put the Vase final on the back burner and let our excellent staff sort out all of the off-field arrangements. We now focus on our league campaign, starting tonight, and we will have to be at our very best to take something from tonight’s game. When you throw in all the emotion from Saturdays game on top of that, it makes tonight’s game extra tough.

Myself and Mick went through every emotion you can think of on the day and we aren’t afraid to admit that it means so much to us to go to Wembley with this fantastic bunch of players, staff and fans for what should be a brilliant weekend.

Memory Match Hebburn Town 2-1 Shildon AFC Tuesday 2nd April 2019 For our memory match, we thought better than to look at least season’s games against Shildon.

Instead, we thought we’d look back to the 2018-19 season. A midweek encounter towards the end of the season proved an important result in Hebburn finishing second in their first Division One season.

Nathan Steel opened the scoring for Shildon in the second half, racing onto the end of a through ball before finishing into the left corner.

Captain Louis Storey made an adventure up the pitch and found himself levelling the game in the 77th minute. On the end of a dinked ball from Robbie Spence, Louis took a good touch and finished well from close range.

The game looked to be heading for a draw.

That is was before Michael Richardson stabbed a hopeful ball forward in the 91st minute which found itself at the feet of Jason Blackburn via a couple of Shildon heads who drove a low volley home.

It was an immense ending to the game and an overjoyed Michael Richardson was captured fantastically in this photo by Richard Waugh.

Ben Potts inroduces himself

New programme contributor, Ben Potts, is no stranger to the Northern League having been involved with numerous clubs. Here he talks of his excitement in getting started with his latest club and recalls some memories of our strike force during his time at Darlo.

I am just an average kid from County Durham who loves his family, loves his football, and has a dodgy right leg.

This is my story. It’s January 2011, the first day back at school after Christmas. I notice PE (my favourite subject) was on the timetable. I always admired my PE staff, having a kid with Cerebral Palsy who loved the subject can’t have been easy, but they were always fantastic.

After this particular lesson Mr. Dixon wanted a word.

“Ben we have an ex-pro footballer called Martin Gray who is going to set up an academy in school, I’d like you to meet him”. I met Martin and explained my situation and he said he’d like me to come and watch sessions.

I did this for a year and a half, and he offered me a job alongside a college course after leaving school.

Meanwhile, Darlington Football Club was in a mess. They had been relegated from the Conference to the Northern League. Martin called me into his office. “I’ve been appointed as the new Darlington manager, I want you to be youth team secretary supporting the manager and sorting out the admin. You can also travel with the first team when your lads don’t play”.

We took the League by storm, going up with 122 points thanks mainly to the goals of our young forward Amar Purewal. We were everybody’s cup final when playing away and we went unbeaten at home all season.

We entered tier 8 with such confidence, Amar again banging them in for fun until Boxing Day 2014 against Radcliffe when he did his ACL. We went on to lose a playoff semi and we needed a new forward for 2014-15.

The forward in question, Graeme Armstrong. What a record at conference level. We signed Nathan Cartman too who had been top scorer the year before. Surely once Amar returned nothing could stop us, I reckoned.

Of course, without considering Gary Neville’s sensational attempt to turn Salford City into Manchester United.

I also had not bargained on the first game of the season being away at Spennymoor. I should not have worried of course as Army bagged two and didn’t stop scoring all season after that.

The only problem was Salford ran away with it. They even had their own TV show. Playoffs again. This time Spennymoor in the semi-final. Armstrong bagged, 1-0, then 2-1 down, then 3-2 up. That was enough and we were in the final. Army delivered again against Bamber Bridge to take us up but he lost his appendix chasing down a last minute ball in a challenge with the ‘keeper.

It took Army a while to get back to fitness as we tackled the Northern Premier League, but he played his part with crucial goals along the way and he was inevitably at Whitby to seal back-to-back promotions.

We were in the Conference North but the unthinkable happened. Army dropped down a league to join Spenny (as I did much later) and took them up. Then he did the same for South Shields. Who would write off another promotion with Hebburn this year? Definitely not me.

As for me, well I left Darlington when Martin went to York and completed a sports journalism degree at Sunderland where I met our brilliant programme editor. I even gave him his first Northern League job at Ryhope CW. I was delighted when I got the call to help out here. I can’t wait for the journey to begin.

Graeme Armstrong The evergreen attacker has started this season showing the same scoring form as he has tended to throughout his career. Now 37, Army talks openly about the start of a new league campaign, reaching his first Vase final, and teaching in a school of Consett fans.

KA: I don’t know about you but I’m still buzzing off Saturday.

GA: I know, I think we all are. It was an amazing game to be honest mate and it’s just nice to be in the final. It’s a relief more than anything now.

KA: I must admit, there was a point in that game where I thought we were coming away with nothing.

GA: It’s hard to say because there’s obviously chance after chance. I think there’s the one where Mick McKeown gets his free-kick tipped onto the bar and you sometimes think, ‘is it going to be our day?’ But I think we’ve got a fairly experienced squad, this team of players recognises that anything can change, anything can happen. Just nice to get that chance right at the end and kind of surprised ourselves probably, how we could deal with that situation.

KA: Your first FA Vase final I believe, isn’t it?

GA: It is yeah. Obviously, prior to this the season before getting to the last 16 with Hebburn was the furthest I’d went. As I was playing at a higher level, we were always in the Trophy rather than the FA Vase. So yeah, it’s my first time in the final.

KA: So what does it mean to you to be lining up for Hebburn at Wembley?

GA: It’s every kids dream isn’t it to play at Wembley in a cup final. When you watch the FA Cup as a young kid, you always thought Wembley was the pinnacle of football, definitely British football. So it’s one of those things, it’s a bit surreal to be honest because especially at my age, you never really expect to have this opportunity at 37. I’ve been lucky enough to play in some good teams and win things at higher levels, but this will certainly be up there as one of the most special times of my career. Walking out at Wembley, it’s definitely going to be up there as one of the most special moments of my career.

KA: I was going to ask where it ranks alongside the special moments in your excellent career, so you’ve already answered my next question.

GA: Well yeah it’s up there with the best. But you don’t just want to go there to enjoy the experience, you want to go to win. It certainly won’t be the best experience if we go get beat. If you really want to enjoy the experience, you’ve still got to recognise you’ve got a job to do. For all the hard work we put into getting to and winning the semi-final, it sounds a bit cruel but you haven’t won anything yet. You can enjoy that but you’ve got to make sure that when you go to Wembley and walk out on that turf, you go and win the game as well.

KA: Consett in the final. An all North East final. We played out a fantastic rollercoaster of the match against them away last season, but I suppose you’d take a much simpler game this time around wouldn’t you?

GA: Yeah I remember the 4-4 game very well. We played them early last season twice, I think both our games against them were done by the end of October. I think one of the key things with our side is that we’ve strengthened quite well since then. I think we’re more confident as a team and as a unit going into this game than I was last year. So it will be interesting, it will be a tough game but I am confident going into it that as long as we play our best we’ll definitely come out with a good result.

KA: You’ve mentioned the way we’ve strengthened. One of the signings, Amar, I know you’ve got a history of playing alongside him in the past. Were you delighted to see him sign?

KA: Mick told me I think, the moment Carl converted his to make it 4-3 with one left to take. Having you left to take the final one, that was the point he knew we had done it. Were you that confident?

GA: Yeah I was. Amar is not only a really good player but also a really good friend of mine. I know what he can bring to the side. I played with him at Darlington for two years and we had a successful time there as well. So it’s good to have him on board, I know what his quality is and he’s certainly strengthened our side.

GA: The pressure penalty I took was the one in the 88th minute because if I’d missed that there would be very little chance of us coming back. After scoring that, taking the fifth penalty which would have been the difference between a place in the final and sudden death, I’d have been confident in stepping up and taking it. I’m not sure I’d have been as confident as Mick says he was, but I’m still fairly confident I’d have put it away.

KA: You’re a teacher right? Have you been in today telling your students all about how you sent Hebburn to an FA Vase final?

GA: It’s funny, a lot of the kids know but a lot of them don’t follow loads of football. The school I teach in has a catchment area in Consett, some of the lads I teach are actually Consett fans and go to the games. It’s quite an interesting one, me lining up against the team they support.

KA: You didn’t end up taking a penalty in the shootout because you’d have taken the fifth if we needed it wouldn’t you?

GA: Yeah I’d have taken the fifth one. Just because that’s your pressure penalty. With me obviously having already scored one and converted two this season, I was fairly confident with my penalty taking. I just said I’d take the fifth, just in case the lad had scored his penalty beforehand it was me with the pressure of taking the penalty to take us into the final as I am probably most suited to dealing with that. Disappointing not to take one in the end. I’m confident in my penalty taking so I’d have liked to take one, but I wasn’t really thinking of that seeing their penalty go over the bar, I was just really happy to be in the final.

KA: I’m glad your more confident than I am. As reliable as you always are, with everything that went against us, when you stepped up for that penalty I thought ‘this is going to be the one where Graeme actually misses from 12 yards.’

GA: I think it’s just that difference in mindset that you’ve got to have. When you’re watching on as a fan or somebody connected with the club, you can become pessimistic, but as a player you can’t afford to. I know if I hit my penalties hard and true, they’ll find that side-netting and I’m confident in my ability to hit the ball well from 12 yards. You’ve got to back yourself you can do it regardless of the pressure and the situation.

KA: I think Sudds beat you for the best penalty on the day anyway.

GA: Yeah he did. It was a great pen. To be fair to him, to come on in the game and open up and hit it the way he did, I told it to him too, that took a bit of nerve to do that so fair play to him. @HebburnTown | 11

GA: I think as a group of players we’re just expecting it to be like that for the rest of the season. When you start late, although the season is going to extend, it’s not going to extend as long as it needs to really. You know, we’ve just got to make sure you don’t use that as an excuse. We don’t use the run in the FA Vase as an excuse to not do well in the league. We’ve always said as much as the FA Vase means to us and it is a priority at the moment, the league is your bread and butter. So we want to win our league games and we want to get promoted out of this league. That’s the key. So you’ve got to grin and bear it and crack on through those games because you’ve got a strong squad of players who know the demands of the game.

KA: Bringing it back to this game. Not the easiest first league fixture is it?

GA: No it’s tough. It’s tough coming on the back of everything really, the emotion of the day, the physical aspect of it as well. It’s just one of those things where you’ve got to kind of power through it. Even then, once you get through this game, you’ve got a tough game against someone higher up the pyramid on Saturday. We always knew these four games were going to be tough but I honestly think Shildon will be the toughest of all of them.

KA: Obviously you’ve mentioned the physical effort of Saturday’s game. Probably played about 50 minutes with 10 men, putting in the extra effort to make up for that missing body. Have you spoken to many of the lads since Saturday? How are they feeling and how are you feeling yourself?

GA: It’s a weird one because you’ve got your extra time and playing with 10 men but you’ve got the travel as well which you kind of forget about, being stuck on a bus for so long. Again, that’s a tough element of it. So the lads will be feeling the effects of it, so although you’re carrying on through and are in good form and stuff like that, it will probably be about 30 minutes into this game where you really start to feel the effects of the weekend’s game. So the lads will be sore and stiff but you’ve got to not feel sorry for yourself and just play and power on through because everybody plays a load of gams, so you just need to get on with it.

KA: The fixture schedule is obviously tough this season.

They’ve had to squeeze everything into a shorter time. It has been straight in at the deep end though with Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday, etc. though hasn’t it?

KA: Last season getting voided the way it did, having fallen behind in the title race and now heading into a fresh campaign with the same teams and possibly similar teams fighting for title, do you think we’re in a good place to mount more of a title challenge.

GA: I think the league will be a lot tighter this year. I think the teams around us have strengthened really well, even Stockton themselves who had a really good season last year and they were the stand-out team. So it’s fair enough that they were in the position they were and I still think they’ll be there or thereabouts. Shildon have strengthened really well as well. But I’d also say we’re starting the season with a better squad as well. With the players we brought in around January last season and obviously the signings this summer, Damen Mullen, Luke Salmon and Amar who we mentioned. Having those players as well to add to that squad, we are confident going into this campaign. It should make for a really interesting league, we just need to make sure we don’t lose too much ground with everything that’s going on and that we just pick up as many points as we can between all of the FA Cup and Vase games.

Club Honours

FORMED in 1890 as Shildon Town, the Railwaymen joined the Auckland and District League two years later and in 1894 merged with the Rangers and Heroes to become Shildon United.

In 1900, the club played in the new Northern League Division Two but folded that season due to financial problems – as did the Second Division. A re-formed club joined the Northern League in 1903 to replace Stockton St John’s. In 1907, Shildon joined the semi-professional ranks of the North Eastern League, finishing second in season 1932/33.Before WWII the club won four successive Northern League Division One titles; a record that stood until overhauled by Blyth in 1984.

in 1927/28 saw the club reach the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time. In the first round they have also played Brentford, Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City, Scunthorpe United and Oldham Athletic three times. The last time the club reached the first round was in 2003/04, losing out 7-2 against Notts County. The club also reached the second round, in 1936/37 against Dartford.The Dean Street turnstiles and distinctive grandstand were erected in 1923.

A £45,000 grant saw new dressing rooms and a social club built beneath the stand 60 years later.

Shildon won the Second Division championship in 2001/02, scoring 135 goals and finished runners-up in two cup competitions. The following season they won the Northern League Challenge Cup with a 3-2 golden goal victory over Billingham Synthonia at Feethams.Tragedy struck the club in February 2004 when 26-year-old player, Lee Hainsworth was killed in a road accident on his way to training. He had been with the club for six years. The Brown Street stand was renamed in his memory.Bill Aisbitt, a lifelong stalwart at the club, died in June 2003 and the boardroom was named in his honour after over 50 years loyal service.

At the end of the 2004 season, the Railwaymen came under serious threat through financial difficulties when the former chairman severed all ties with the club. At the end of the season all the players and the manager left the club, leaving it crippled.But during the close season, the club appointed a new chairman, Brian Burn who ensured its survival.

The club survived a relegation scare and since then has gone from strength to strength.In 2012-13, the club reached two cup semi-finals.

A depleted side lost in the Durham Challenge Cup to Spennymoor Town. The match brought an end to the playing career of midfielder Chris Hughes after he suffered a knee injury. And there was more heartbreak as the side narrowly missed a dream day out at Wembley after losing their two-legged FA Vase semi-final to a late extra-time goal in the second leg at home.

In season 2013-14, the management team further strengthened the playing squad, bring in several experienced players in a determination to bring silverware back to Dean Street for the first time. The investment paid off with the club narrowly missing out on the league title, remaining competitive until the final weeks of the season.But the club were able to avenge the semi-final defeat of the previous season when they faced Spennymoor Town in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup. On an historic Good Friday, Shildon striker, Billy Greulich-Smith added a new chapter to the club’s history books with two late goals – the winner in added time at the end of the 90 minutes – to overcome their local rivals by two goals to one.

After missing out on the Northern League Championship in the 2014-15 season by one point, the team re-grouped and won the Northern League Cup and became Champions of the Northern League the following season.Following the sudden departure of the Management Team, Chairman David Dent appointed Daniel Moore in January 2017 and Moore guided us to 3rd position in the League and a Durham Challenge Cup Semi-Final.The first piece of silverware came at the start of the 2018/19 season with a 4-1 Penalty victory against Dunston UTS. During this season, Daniel Moore guided us to another top 6 finish and the season finished as it started with silverware coming back to Dean Street after the Club defeated South Shields 1-0 in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup held at the Stadium of Light. we will face head-on.

He is a calm defender who goes about his job with confidence and gives confidence to the defenders around him.

NoticeBoard U18s through in Youth Cup A huge congratulations are in order for the Hornets U18s who are to the next round of the FA Youth Cup. They beat Newcastle Benfield (who are linked up with Louis Storey’s Newcastle Elite Academy) on penalties following a 3-3 draw after 90 minutes.

They will now host either Workington AFC or Scarborough AFC U18s in the first qualifying round on Monday 21st September.

We hope to see a good turnout to support the lads.

FA Vase Final

We have been inundated with questions regarding ticketing information for the Vase final.

All we can really say right now is that we know very little besides the fact it will take place on Sunday 27th September at Wembley Stadium.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is set to be played on Sunday 27 September at Wembley.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

Match Reports Tuesday 1 September Hebburn Town 4-1 Hemsworth Miners Welfare Hebburn Town got their season underway with progression in the FA Cup after defeating Hemsworth Miners Welfare 4-1 at home.

The Hornets looked in good stead in their first competitive game of the season against the Northern Counties East League side in the extra preliminary round.

Summer signing Amar Purewal gave the Hornets a lead 16 min utes into his competitive debut when he headed home Tom Potter’s Corner.

Hemsworth levelled in the 24th minute thanks to a stunning strike from Layton Swaine into the top right corner from around 30 yards out.

Graeme Armstrong restored the lead minutes before the break from the penalty spot. Carl Taylor was felled by Declan Dawson after he’d already played the ball and Armstrong comfortably smashed into the roof of the net from the spot.

Michael McKeown scored in the 68th minute with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box.

Armstrong grabbed his second in the 82nd after some good work from Cedwyn Scott set up the tap-in to ensure a comfortable victory.

The win sets up a Preliminary Round match with Pontefract Collieries.

Hebburn Town confirmed their place at Wembley with a penalty shoot-out victory after a stunning game packed with every emotion.

With a place at Wembley at stake, it was a cagey opening 20 minutes.

However, Corinthian did see some half chances early on, Jack Mahoney shooting on target from outside the box but straight at Foden.

The Hornets started to show some threat with some half chances, seeing a number of set-piece chances wasted with crosses narrowly evading players in dangerous areas.

Tom Potter, who looked like the Hornets’ biggest threat throughout the first-half saw shots blocked by Jamie Billings standing firm in the Corinthian defence.

Robbie Spence was on the end of a cross in the 36th minute and turned his header on target, forcing an excellent save from Aiden Prall.

It was one of those moments that makes you think it just isn’t going to be your day. But as a lot of the Hebburn fans started to lose some of their belief, the players were not going to let their Wembley dreams die.

They finally saw the rewards for their endeavour in the 88th minute.

Dan Groves looped a ball into the box towards Armstrong and Corinthian defender Jack Bath was deemed to have stuck an elbow in when challenging for the header.

Graeme Armstrong stepped up and expertly fired home from 12 yards into the top left corner.

The 10-man Hornets had already put in a stunning shift to level the game and go to extra-time, but it would have to take a heroic effort with an extra 30 minutes to play.

And it was exactly that on display, the Hornets continuing to take the game to the home side.

Hebburn came even closer a minute later when a nice move resulted in a ball through to Potter who shot low towards the left corner but Prall got down well to turn around the post.

Hebburn managed to get their noses in front in the 10th minute of extra time when Armstrong put himself on the end of McKeown’s cross to head home.

The Hornets were on the front foot as the first half was ending and were looking to carry that momentum into the second half.

It felt like Hebburn had one foot in the final but with little over 10 minutes left to play, the referee awarded Corinthian another penalty when Emmanuel Oloyede initially showed some good footwork to get into the box before falling over in the vicinity of Dan Groves.

But disaster struck when Hebburn conceded a penalty within a minute of the start of the second half.

Andres Tobon showed some good footwork to break into the box, Mark Foden came out to meet him and was adjudged to have fouled the Corinthian attacker inside the box.

Oscar Housego stepped up and put the penalty straight down the middle and past Foden who dived to his left.

Things went from bad to worse for Hebburn with 13 minutes left to play. Substitute Olly Martin challenged the ‘keeper Prall to get on the end of a headed pass and took out the ‘keeper who got there first.

Billings, who put in a spectacular defensive effort to frustrate Hebburn all game, stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake in slotting home into the right corner.

So the tie had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. With an FA Vase final at Wembley at stake, it was a time for cool nerves. Thankfully, it was Hebburn that had the coolest on the day.

The shoot-out opened with a great standard of penalties that were fit for a much bigger stage, the sides level at 3-3 after three penalties each.

The referee opted for a red card, sending Martin for an early bath for trying to get to loose ball.

But the breakthrough finally came when Foden guessed right to dive to the left for Bath’s penalty and give Carl Taylor the chance to give Hebburn lead.

But with things looking bleak for the Hornets, they somehow managed to find a way to go up another gear.

With Hebburn a penalty ahead with Armstrong left to take, it felt like the place in the final was in the bag.

Michael McKeown struck a free-kick brilliantly in the 81st minute which Prall fantastically tipped onto the bar, the ball taking another bounce off the ‘keeper from the bar and somehow staying out.

As it turned out, the Hornets wouldn’t need Armstrong as Louie Clarke blazed over.

It was a truly magical moment.

Hebburn Town are going to Wembley.

Ben Potts puts the spotlight on our next opponents. This week, the team in question is Pontefract Collieries. A team you may remember from this competition last season.

After what has been a historic week for Hebburn having reached their first ever FA Vase final last weekend, Kevin Bolam’s side look to progress in the FA Cup as they welcome Pontefract Collieries.

The Colls have enjoyed a meteoric rise with two promotions in the last three seasons and they now play in the North West Division of the Northern Premier League which is a step above the Hornets.

Although last season was curtailed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Pontefract still managed to win two cup competitions to go alongside the two promotions.

Andy Monkhouse’s side will be no strangers to Hebburn as this tie is an exact repeat of this stage last season at the Hebburn Sports Ground which was won by the Yorkshire side.

Hebburn were the better side in the first tie down in Pontefract, Graeme Armstrong scoring a penalty in the 15th minute to level the game minutes after the Colls took the lead. The two sides played out an eventful but fruitless draw following that.

However, the replay at Hebburn was a different story. Pontefract won 4-0 while the Hornets saw Michael Richardson sent off.

On the scoresheet that night was Layton Swaine, who played against us in the previous round as he now turns out for Hemsworth.

In fact, a lot of that squad that beat Hebburn last season no longer turn out for Pontefract, as manager Andy Monkhouse (whose name may ring a few bells) has brought his own flavour to their squad.

A player that remains, however, is Leeds United academy graduate and England U19s international Gavin Rothery. The midfielder was once tipped for big things and has enjoyed a good career in non-league football, including a long spell in the Conference with Guiseley.

Editor’s Notes Some do at the weekend, wasn’t it?

I’m not going to go too much into that historic game right now. I’ve still not fully recovered, my head is all over the place and it is impossible for me to be at all objective or Like I say, I’m holding back a lot of what I want to say insightful about it. about the game and Hebburn at Wembley in general at the moment. I feel Saturday’s programme would be All I’ll say for now is that this kind of success is no more appropriate and it gives me time to find the heed accident. It is born out of the hard work of some brilliant that has well and truly fallen off my shoulders. Hopefully, people. People who live and breathe the club and would then it will come across less like the ramblings of a pure go to the ends of the earth to bring success to Hebburn melt.

Town. It’s been a privilege to see first hand the work of those people.

So let’s talk about tonight’s game instead. Shildon had our number last season. The game at Dean Street sticks I want to say a huge congratulations to Kevin and Mick. in the mind as one of our worst performances of last It’s hard to think of two people who deserve to manage season. And I want to pass on another congratulations to the players. That was genuinely a heroic effort from them.

Some shift. I’ve got nothing but admiration for all of them.

People may look at Olly as an exception after his sending off. I don’t think that would be fair, it’s still never a red in my eyes. He’s challenging for a ball that he’s albeit second to and he unfortunately hits the ‘keeper. It was a challenge that came out of a desire to win, to not let the Wembley dream die with us a goal down at the time. If he doesn’t make the attempt to get onto the lacklustre headed backpass, people would question his desire.

It was hard to see the despair of the Corinthian players, fans but most of all the committee. They were nothing but welcoming and helpful from the minute we arrived.

Another club where you could tell their success was a symptom of the good people around it. They should be very proud of their team.

Since I first worked in the Northern League covering Ryhope in 2017-18, I feel like Billy Greulich-Smith has scored in every game I’ve seen him play. I haven’t noted down any statistics, but I’m pretty sure he’ll be the Northern League player I’ve seen score the most against teams I was covering. No doubt he’ll be one of the league’s top scorers again this season, keeping him quiet will be one of the toughest tests our defence will face throughout the campaign.

I also imagine it will be tough for the lads going into the game on the back of Saturday’s rollercoaster. The travel, the short turnaround, the sheer effort with 10 men. I can only imagine the toll that has taken on them.

But I also know they won’t look for excuses. Yes the Vase means a lot to them, but that can’t be at the expense of your league campaign. The ambition of the club is to move up the leagues and the players know that promotion is an objective that has been set for them. There isn’t a much better way to set the precedent than to beat one of the promotion favourites in their opening game.

It’s certainly an interesting match-up and I’m sure it will be an exciting start to the league campaign.
