Hello, good evening and welcome back for tonight’s match against Bishop Auckland.

We would like to offer a warm welcome to all players, staff and Supporters of Bishop Auckland FC to the Green Energy Stadium for tonight's Ebac Northern League Division One fixture.

Whilst we are all battling to keep football going, we are all still in a very difficult situation and we all need to be seen to be vigilant to keep our game alive.

Players, staff and clubs in general all want fans back in as normal, but we must follow guidelines to the letter to help get back to that day. Hopefully in the not too distant future.

Back to football and tonight brings another home game for us against a Bishop Auckland side who will be out to impress their new management team, both of which have a huge amount of experience in the game from a playing point of view and in management as well.

I am sure Andy and Ian will get the club back competing at the top end of the table in time as we all know it is a big club at this level of football with a lot of history behind them.

After our poor showing last week at North Shields, we responded brilliantly on Saturday when we scored nine without reply against a never say die Penrith side.

Mick and I were very pleased with the response and to score nine with six different goal scorers was a huge bonus to us. I have been saying for a couple of weeks now that someone was going to be on the end of a real hiding off us as the chances we have been creating has been exceptional.

Tonight's game will be a tough test as Andy and Ian will no doubt have had a couple of sessions to work with their lads and I have no doubt they will prove to be difficult opponents and we will have to be right at it to get a result.

From a squad point of view, I am delighted to welcome Lee Mason into the group with his loan move from our neighbours at South Shields FC. And on top of that, we also welcome back from injury our skipper Louis Storey and midfielder Michael Richardson. Danny Carson also comes back into the group after being unavailable to us on Saturday.

Hopefully it's another good game for the watching public.

Memory Match Hebburn Town 3-2 Bishop Auckland Saturday 23rd March 2019 Ebac Northern League Division One Hebburn Town faced Bishop Auckland late in the 2018/19 season when the two clubs were chasing down the second placed finish behind runaway league leaders Dunston UTS. Fans were treated to a hugely entertaining encounter between two of the league's top sides.

The Hornets took the lead when Bishops goalkeeper Gareth Young failed to claim Jack Robson's cross and Robbie Spence was on hand to smash home in the 18th minute.

It was less than 10 minutes before Hebburn doubled their lead when Graeme Armstrong headed home Gary Shaw's corner.

Bishops pulled a goal back 10 minutes into the second half when Hebburn failed to clear their lines which provided Andrew Johnson a chance to fire home from the edge of the box.

And the visitors were level within a minute when Michael Hoganson broke forward excellently before drilling a shot into the bottom right corner from 20 yards.

Both sides went in search of an equaliser and saw excellent chances go begging.

But in the 83rd minute Michael Richardson provided a bit of magic to get the winner. He is pictured here by Richard Waugh after his stunning strike from the left corner of the box into the top right corner of the goal.

Carl Taylor Carl is one of few players to have featured in every match for the Hornets this season, the midfielder playing an important role in filling in all over the park. Here he talks about how his versatility is both a blessing and a course and his thoughts on the season so far.

Q: Largely it has been a good start to the season.

What are your thoughts on the season so far?

CT: Other than the North Shields game, it has been an excellent start for the team and the management.

It’s a continuation from preseason when we were excellent as well and we carried that forward into the league. Other than last week’s game, I feel like we’ve been flying. So it has been a really good start.

Q: And after that below-par game against North Shields, you followed it up with an emphatic 9-0 win over Penrith on Saturday. That’s a perfect reaction isn’t it?

CT: Yeah definitely. After last week’s game we were all a little bit down and we just had to refocus our minds towards Saturday. It was a great reaction from everyone in the team. We knew all eyes would be on the game and how we responded, so to get a win in that way was really good.

Q: You’ve helped out everywhere at the start of this season. Right-back, left-back, attacking midfield, deep-lying midfield. Do you enjoy that challenge or is it frustrating that your versatility means you play less time in your natural position?

CT: I’m always there to help the team and I’m willing to play anywhere I’m needed. Sometimes it can be frustrating. CT: It’s obviously great to see Michael back and getting some minutes on the pitch. He’s a huge player for us. I’d probably see myself as more of a number 8 than a 10. I’d like to believe that I could slot in just behind Michael. Obviously, if Kev wants me to play in the 10 and have competition with Michael, that’s great. It’s always good to see him back on the pitch as everybody knows how good of a player he is.

CT: It’s every boy’s dream to play at Wembley. It’s the biggest stadium in England and it’s where you dream about playing one day when you’re a kid. Obviously I’m glad it hasn’t happened while we still wouldn’t be able to get many people in to see it. Hopefully by the time it comes around, we can have more fans, family and friends in there to see it. It is in the back of my mind a lot of the time that we’re going to be playing there soon, it’s hard to forget about it, but we have just got to try and concentrate on the league at the moment and put the Vase to one side.

Q: On tonight’s game. Bishop Auckland have had a difficult start to the season and have changed their manager. Is there a bit of fear you could be the victims of a new manager’s bounce?

CT: Obviously all of them will want to be impressing their new manager. I feel like if we’re on it and we’re doing the right things, hopefully we can come away with the three points regardless of their performance.

If we carry on from Saturday’s game, some of the build-up play and the goals we scored were very good.

So fingers crossed we can get the job done.

Q: And I’m sure you’ll be hoping that with Saturday’s result and another result tonight, it can be a springboard for another unbeaten run?

CT: Yeah definitely. It’s always good to go on those long unbeaten runs, it’s what everyone likes to see.

But also, at this moment in time, we’ll need to start another run without conceding goals because at the start of the season we’ve done excellent. We were keeping clean sheets, but obviously conceding three in one game was kick up the backside. So we need to go on another run and try and keep as many clean sheets as possible.

Q: I’m trying to not ask questions about the Vase all the time now as it has been a while since that semi-final and it seems strange to focus on it when we don’t know the date. But I just want to ask you, what does it mean to you to have the chance to play at Wembley?

It all started in 1882 when theological students from Oxford and Cambridge Universities whilst studying at Auckland Castle, home of the Bishop of Durham, formed a team known as Bishop Auckland Church Institute. A later dispute caused a breakaway team called Auckland Town to be formed in 1886/87 and it was from this upheaval that Bishop Auckland Football Club was eventually born .

Eight days after its formation, the club chose royal blue with white facings and subsequently the light and dark blue colours of the original Church Institute representing the colours of Oxbridge. Auckland Town was a founder member of the Northern League in 1889 but left after its first season before returning as Bishop Auckland in 1893. Between 1893 and 1988, the club won the league championship a record 19 times. The first championship was claimed in 1898/99 with the club going unbeaten in their league campaign, winning nine and drawing seven of their sixteen league matches.

Success in national and local competitions often left the club with a backlog of league fixtures at the end of the season. In 1936/37 the team played 18 games in 18 days, without defeat, to finish runners-up. In 1937/38 the club ended up playing 14 games in 18 days, again finishing as runners-up, and in 1938/39 they played 10 games in 11 days to become champions. The most successful period in the Northern League came between 1947 and 1956 when the team never finished below second place. During this period they were champions seven times and runners-up on three occasions.

Following the tragic Munich air disaster of 1958 when Manchester United lost so many talented players, three Bishop Auckland players went to assist the First Division champions. They were Derek Lewin, Warren Bradley, and Bobby Hardisty, who all played in United’s Central League side in March that year. Bradley, an England Amateur International, not only became a regular in United’s first team but also went on to play for his country at full international level.

In the FA Amateur Cup, the Bishops record was without equal. No other club can match their number of wins, finals, and semi-final appearances. They were in the final 18 times, winning the cup on ten occasions including a record three times in a row in 1955, 1956 and 1957. The club were also semi-finalists on 27 occasions. When the competition ceased in 1974, the club was presented with a replica of the Amateur Cup in recognition of its outstanding record.

In the FA Cup, the Club has played in the First Round Proper on a remarkable 23 occasions winning 10 times with memorable games against the likes of Sheffield United, Wolves, Carlisle United, Blackpool, Bury and Crewe. The best Cup run came in the 1954/55 season when, after beating Kettering Town 5-1 (home), Crystal Palace 4-2 (away), and Ipswich Town 3-0 (home) after a 2-2 draw in East Anglia, they were defeated 1-3 at home by York City in a thrilling Fourth Round tie. Two seasons earlier, a record attendance of 16,319 packed into Kingsway to see a Second Round defeat to Coventry City.

Unquestionably the most famous player to wear the famous ‘Two Blues’ shirt was Bobby Hardisty. In a glittering 21 year playing career, starting with an FA Amateur Cup semi -final appearance at the age of 17, he gained every conceivable amateur honour. Bob was in the British team at three Olympic Games, won 15 Amateur International caps for England, and also played for Middlesbrough, Hibernian and Manchester United reserves. He also played in six FA Amateur Cup Finals at Wembley, gaining three winners medals, and won six Northern League Championship medals in seven years.

In 1988, almost a century after first joining the Northern League, the Bishops decided to enter the pyramid system via the Northern Premier League. It was the end of an era, but it was also the beginning of an exciting new phase in the club’s history as the team immediately gained promotion to the Premier Division, where they more than held their own for over a decade. The highest ever league placing was as Runners-up in the 1996/97 season At the end of the 2001/02 season the Club, now a limited company, moved away from Kingsway, home for 116 years, so that part of the ground that was shared with the local Cricket Club could be sold to help fund a new ground that would meet the now more demanding criteria for football stadia.

The Club entered ground sharing agreements with a number of local clubs over the following 8 years. In 2002 the Two Blues suffered relegation for the first time in their long and distinguished history. Despite not finishing in a relegation place, they were demoted by the Northern Premier League on a ground technicality. They battled back, and found themselves in the Premier Division in 2004 following the restructuring of the non-league pyramid. However, relegation inevitably followed and so after a gap of 18 years, the Bishops’ returned to the Northern League for the 2006/07 season.

After a considerable amount of complex negotiations a site for the new stadium was found and Heritage Park, with a capacity of just over 2,000 was officially opened

Heritage Park hit full capacity (2,004) in the opening league match of the 2012/13 season against our current ground sharing partners Darlington 1883 in their first competitive game in the Northern League since reforming.

2015 has seen possibly the biggest news for quite some time in the history of the Club when Colin Rowell, an avid supporter of the Club for more than 70 years, left the bulk of his estate, worth more than £300,000 to the Club on his death at the age of 79 years, as a fitting tribute to Colin, his ashes were scattered on the Heritage Park pitch.

The 2016/17 campaign saw the club finish a solid 8th position in the Northern League. The club progressed to the 4th qualifying round of the FA Cup eventually getting knocked out by ex-football league club Stockport County, this was Bishop’s best performance in the cup in the last 20 years.

Bishop Auckland Player Profiles Goalkeepers Nick Liversedge Now starting his third season with Bishops after signing from Shildon when manager Ian Chandler took the reins. Nick has an abundance of experience and is an excellent shot stopper who commands his box extremely well.

Defenders Kris Summers Tall commanding centre half who is comfortable with the ball at his feet. New signing, previously with Billingham Town and briefly with Thornaby.

Callum Munro Callum played for Seaham Red Star and previously for Ian at Whitley Bay and Durham. Callum started his career as a centre forward but recently he’s been playing as a bit of a utility player filing in at right back, right wing or even as a right sided central defender in a 3-4-3 formation.

Regan Nixon Regan has been involved with the first team squad for a couple of seasons now and will be looking to feature more regularly.

Mark Dixon Aged 27, left back signed from Billingham Town in June 2020. Mark is given the task of replacing Michael Hoganson on the left-hand side of the Bishops defence.

Jamie Marshall Jamie joined us from Jarrow Roofing in the summer of 2018, where he was one of their longest standing players, he is a strong right sided defender and can also feature in midfield.

Cameron Martin Another new signing with previous experience with Billingham Town where he was highly rated and a mainstay at right back in their 2nd Division promotion winning side and successful season in 2019-20 Liam Potter Aged 18 Liam made the step up from St Mary’s U17 last season which turned out to be a very successful breakthrough year for him where he attracted the attention of numerous scouts from the professional game. Liam reads the game so well for a player of his tender years.

Liam Goldsborough Signed during pre-season. Previously at Fleetwood Town where Liam featured in the youth ranks.

McKellan Lines Made his Bishops debut in the final game of last seasons shortened campaign at Thornaby. Regarded as having a promising future ahead of him.

Midfielders Ryan Robinson Another very young lad when he joined the club in the summer of 2018. With a couple of seasons under his belt Ryan has improved steadily and became more of a regular in Ian Chandlers line up last season featuring at full back as well as his natural midfield position.

Jack Connor Aged 25, Jack is a defensive minded midfielder and another summer signing. Previously with Thornaby.

Darren Richardson Local lad Darren initially played for Bishops under Brian Honour and Colin Myers before leaving in the summer of 2012 where he joined Darlington 1883. Spells at Shildon & West Auckland followed before he re-joined Bishops towards the end of 2017/18. Darren is currently recovering from a long-term knee injury sustained last season.

Kyle Morris Signed in Oct 2019. Most recently with Wolviston, Kyle has previous experience with Sunderland RCA along with playing college football in the USA. Kyle chipped in with several important goals from the middle of last season including the late dramatic winner away to Shildon in December.

Jamie Davis Aged 32, attacking midfielder Jamie was signed in the summer of 2020 from Billingham Town where he impressed when he helped engineer a heavy league defeat on us last season.

Kieron Parnaby Signed at the start of the 2019-20 season, Kieron added some much needed bite to the midfield. A good engine with a good range of passing he also demonstrated his like for a spectacular goal.

Forwards Luke Hogan Aged 23, left winger and another who impressed for Billingham Town last season, particular against Bishops. Luke has already showed his attacking capabilities with two excellent goals v Washington in preseason and will look to add pace and excitement going forward.

Christopher Winn Centre forward Chris has a fantastic work ethic and is a tremendous team player who has caused many defences problems over the last few seasons. Contributed an impressive 15 goals in 201819 and was set to match that tally last season before the March shutdown.

Craig Hutchinson Aged 26, Craig is a prolific striker who has scored bucket loads of goals for Billingham Town, Newton Aycliffe and Guisborough Town over the past couple of seasons. Ian captured his signature at the start of the summer and will be relied upon to form a potent forward line alongside Chris Winn Jack Cooper New signing during pre-season Axel Tucker New signing during pre-season.

Luke Brownless Propelled into the first team squad in Sept 2020 after a prolific run of goalscoring form for the U18 side. Luke is only 16 and debuted from the bench in the home defeat to Whitley Bay where he made an instant impression.

Hebburn Town winger Lewis Suddick has completed a move to Seaham Red Star on loan.

The Newcastle United academy graduate has played a bit-part role so far this season, mainly featuring from the bench.

He scored as a substitute away to his new club Seaham, and came on as a sub in the Vase semi-final and scored a spectacular penalty in the shoot-out.

Hebburn Town believe Suddick to be a very talented player with a bright future ahead of him, but were aware that we may not be able to offer him the minutes he deserves, especially with the new signing of Lee Mason.

The move to Seaham should allow him to get the minutes he deserves, playing under Hebburn lad Mark Collingwood.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle.

Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide.

The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history.

Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys.

There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society.

Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however.

They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points.

The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968.

In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.

History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season.

During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix.

Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed.

The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place.

In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase.

The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round.

In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.

Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

Saturday 3rd October Hebburn Town 9-0 Penrith

By Stephen Rutherford Hebburn Town equalled their record league victory of 9-0, and achieved their biggest win in the Northern League as they faced Penrith on Saturday.

Hebburn Town hosted fellow Northern League Division One side Penrith FC on Saturday in a very wet, cold and covid-19 hit South Tyneside. The weather and current mood of the area could be summed up by the lowest crowd the hornets have seen at The Green Energy Sports Ground of 137 for quite some time.

Nevertheless those 137 brave souls were in for a spectacular treat as the hornets bounced back after the midweek defeat to North Shields with an emphatic 9-0 win. A dominating performance saw the hosts score five (5) goals in the first half with Cedwyn Scott, Graeme Armstrong, Michael McKeown and two goals for debutant Lee Mason before the half-time whistle.

The second half proved to be just as dominating with a further four (4) goals scored as Robbie Spence, Olly Martin got a goal a piece whilst Armstrong secured his first hat-trick of the 2020 season when he converted a further two to add to his first half strike. You could argue the hornets could have had double figures were it not for some fantastic last-ditch defending from Penrith with two goal line clearances and at least 4 fantastic saves from the visiting goalkeeper.

On an awful day weather wise the pitch at The Green Energy Sports Ground was in top-notch condition, Covid-19 measures meant a reduced capacity of 150 so for such an entertaining game the elements and outside influences prevented the majority of the Hebburn hecklers to miss the game.

Hebburn started very brightly and got a handle on the game from the early minutes, dominating possession and moving it well across the pitch and through the thirds. The home side had 3 half chances within the first 10 minutes but couldn’t find the net, but that changed in the 11th minute when Cedwyn Scott got on the end of an excellent through ball from Michael McKeown, Scott drove forward, rounded the advancing keeper and slotted the ball home to make it 1-0 to Hebburn.

The home side continued to put pressure on Penrith with a number of close chances and in the 20th minute on loan debutant Lee Mason got on the score sheet, Scott worked well down the left, zipped a ball in and a defender cleared only to Mason who made no mistake as he drilled the ball in from 13 yards 2-0.

It didn’t take long for Mason to get his second, In the 29th minute he combined with fellow striker Armstrong who after some great work to get on the end of the ball forward unselfishly squared the ball t Mason who took a touch round the keeper and slotted it in the net 3-0.

The constant pressure from the home side was impacting the visitors but to their credit the Bonny Blues worked tirelessly, however the hosts were just too clinical and in the 38th minute McKeown became supplier again as he threaded a lovely ball through to Armstrong who took a touch and rifled it into the far corner 4-0.

Mason almost had a debut hat-trick in the 40th minute when his cute header from a Lough cross went narrowly over the bar from 6 yards out. Minutes later Armstrong had a rasper of a shot from 18 yards cannon of the post and away to safety in somewhat a let-off for the visitors.

On the stroke of half-time the hornets hit a fifth when influential midfielder McKeown continued his good goal scoring form with a fantastic 25 yard strike that almost bust the net in the bottom corner.

Half-time Hebburn Town 5-0 Penrith

The visitors must have had a good talking to at the interval as they came out firing on all cylinders and created an early chance in what would be one of only a handful all game but Mark Foden in the Hebburn goal was alert and saved comfortably. Hebburn scored their sixth on 49 minutes, Donaghy who was up top from a resulting corner struck from the edge of the box, the ball was blocked and it fell to Scott who squared it nicely to Armstrong to tap it in from 3 yards to get his second.

The next 8 minutes of the game were manic as Hebburn continued to dominate and rifle shots at the visitors' goal but a combination of great defending from Penrith and quality saves from the goalkeeper prevented a goal, that was until the 57th minute when Robbie Spence neatly lobbed the ball over his head and over the keeper from 12 yards to score the hornets seventh of the game. 7-0 Armstrong nearly had his hat-trick in the 61st minute when a great cross from Scott was met by the prolific centre-forward at the back post but his header went along the face of the goal and out for a goal kick.

Kevin Bolam made a triple substitution in 64th minute, welcoming back Louis Storey, Michael Richardson and Olly Martin who replaced Mason, Potter and Taylor.

All three substitutes had an immediate impact and it was Martin who assisted in Hebburn’s eighth goal, a wonderful strike from 22 yards was parried by the Penrith keeper and none other than Graeme Armstrong was on hand to tap it in and secure his hat-trick. 8-0.

Hebburn continued the barrage of the visitors' goal, two off the line and many other fine blocks and saves prevented the hosts getting more goals until the 87th minute when Martin got the ninth and final goal of the game when the roles were reversed between Armstrong and him. Armstrong had a shot from the left angle that looped of the defender's leg, Martin was at the back post where he nodded it in to finish off a superb afternoon of goalscoring for the hornets. 9-0.

We put the spotlight on our next opponents. This week, the team in question is Whitley Bay, who will be hoping their excellent effort in the FA Cup can be a springboard for some league form.

Hebburn will be back on the road for only the third time in the league this season when they face Whitley Bay on Saturday.

The Bay are only three games through their league season, sitting on six points with two wins and one loss which came at the hands of Stockton Town.

They are looking much improved after a poor campaign prior to the league being voided last term and had an excellent run in the FA Cup.

This run came to an end at the weekend at the hands of National League North side Blyth Spartans. Whitley Bay found themselves 2-1 up despite being down to 10 men with outfielder Adam Shanks in goal. However, Blyth managed to come back at them to win 4-2 including a hat-trick of penalties from Simon Heslop.

Whitley will be looking to bounce back when they face Thornaby at home tonight, before heading into the game against ourselves.

We played some excellent ties with Whitley Bay last season with the two sides facing each other no fewer than four times.

In the first fixture, we beat them 7-1 at Hillheads in the extra-preliminary round of the FA Cup which included a hat-trick of penalties from Graeme Armstrong.

But that would not set the tone for future meetings. The next game came at home in the league cup, and it was a tight 2-1 win for Hebburn in a competitive game.

We then travelled to Hillheads again, to play against Whitley Bay for the third time before the end of September. It looked like it was going to go much the same as the FA Cup game at Hillheads with Hebburn 5-0 after 70 minutes, but Whitley bay showed what they are made of with a stunning fightback to 5-4, but it just wasn't enough.

After threatening to take a result from us in the last couple of matches, Whitley finally got their revenge in the home fixture, with a second half turnaround to come back from 1-0 down.

If last season's games are anything to go by, it's always an interesting game when these sides meet.

Editor’s Notes Hello and welcome everybody to the Green Energy Stadium for today's game with Bishop Auckland.

I would also like to extend a warm welcome to everyone associated with Bishop Auckland who has made the journey up to Hebburn for this evening's game.

I would like to wish Stephen the best for his recovery.

It feels strange welcoming people to a game that you're not going to be at yourself.

The weekend's game sounds like the perfect remedy after the defeat away to North Shields. The word 'reaction' has been discussed a lot, and it wouldn't be possible for a better one than that.

Personally, I'm counting down the days until my isolation period ends and I can get back to games.

Hopefully, it is the start of another unbeaten run, although tonight is an intriguing task.

I was gutted to miss a competitive game for the first time this season against Penrith. That was made even more frustrating when the lads banged in nine goals.

Bishop Auckland have always been someone who I have thought about as top contenders prior to the start of the season, but they weren't looking anything like that by the time last season was called off.

It will make running this month's goal of the month competition difficult to run. That's 9 goals already not recorded, and Kevin informs me there were some really good team and individual goals in there.

They have also had a poor start to this season. However, you look through the names in their squad and you can see there are still a lot of very good players in there.

It was strange following the game via Stephen Rutherford's tweets, and a little bit of a taster for me what it has been like for fans who haven't been able to attend games during this period.

They have appointed a new manager, and I'm sure it won't be long until he gets them playing. But as long as our lads stick to their standards, I'm sure they will run out winners.

Ruddy did an excellent job on the updates. I know how hard it can be to keep up with the updates when goals are flying in like that.

Everyone who I've spoken to about it seems to be playing it down. It seems that nobody at the club is looking at the league table but me. But it does feel like a boost that North Shields took their first defeat of the season at the weekend, which leaves us one point below them with a game in hand.

Sadly, Ruddy has also tested positive for Covid-19, which means it will be difficult to bring you updates from this match.

Obviously, it is early days, and other teams will undoubtedly put themselves in the title mix. Stockton and Shildon were spoken about among the preseason favourites. Meanwhile, Consett still have a perfect record, having only played three games. And obviously with the Northern League, you always get surprise packages. Newton Aycliffe have started well, Whitley Bay have won two of their first three games.

It looks wide open this season.
