On behalf of everyone at Hebburn Town FC, I would like to offer a warm welcome to staff, Players and supporters of Northallerton Town FC to the Green Energy Advice Stadium for today's Ebac Northern League Division One fixture. I'd also like to welcome back all of our supporters for another home game. Hopefully, we can give you another entertaining game and a win. Our opponents are sat in 14th place ahead of today's game with wins over Bishop Auckland and Whickham, home and away. Those wins alone should be enough to suggest our opponents today are more than capable of beating anyone in this league as both Whickham and Bishop Auckland have visited us recently and both showed how good they were on the night as they challenged us in tight encounters. Today's opponents will be dangerous as they have added quality to their side this season, so we must approach it in the right manner. Having said that, our squad has been superb since that disappointing night at North Shields a few weeks ago. Myself, Mick, Jason and Angelos are over the moon with our overall play at present. Our creativity and approach play has been excellent and the lads have scored 45 goals already in the league this season which averages out at over 4 per game. More important, however, is our desire to keep clean sheets and stop leaking goals like we were last season and we have seen a huge improvement in that so far this season as well.

Our last outing at Ashington was a brilliant 6-1 away win and the lads put in another top performance against a side who had enjoyed a great run of form lately. Some of our play going forward was brilliant and if it wasn't for their keeper we could quite easily have scored a few more. Everyone is talking about young Cedwyn at present and rightly so, his goalscoring record is phenomenal. But we must also pay credit to the lads behind him who have been providing chances for him. Some of his goals have been excellent but other players are chipping in with goals as well and no doubt we will have serious competition in those areas come the end of the season. Memory Match Northallerton 1-4 Hebburn Town Saturday 1st February 2020 Ebac Northern League An Olly Martin brace helped Hebburn Town to a 4-1 victory in our previous encounter with Northallerton Town which came in the second half of last season. The Hornets travelled to North Yorkshire in early February and returned with all three points thanks to Martin's double and goals from Michael Richardson (Pictured here by Sean Harrison) and Graeme Armstrong. Hebburn were in front just five minutes into the game, when Dan Groves intercepted a goal kick, headed it forward and Richardson smashed the ball past the goalkeeper following Armstrong’s nod-on. Northallerton started the second half well, and got an equaliser in the 57th minute when ‘keeper Tom Dawson launched the ball up to Michael Rae and he took the ball round Mark Foden and slotted home. In the 69th minute, the Hornets did get back in front when Armstrong headed from a corner across to Martin at the far post who headed past the ‘keeper. Four minutes later, the visitors were awarded a penalty when Martin was brought down in the box and Armstrong buried the spot-kick in the bottom left corner. In the 77th minute, Armstrong and Martin linked up well again with the former playing a good ball through to the in-form winger who beat the keeper one-on-one slotting the ball home. Hebburn could have had six or seven on the day. In the previous encounter with Northallerton last season, the Hornets had an even more emphatic victory with a 6-1 home win. @HebburnTown | 5
Damen Mullen A summer signing who joined after a long spell at Blyth Spartans, central midfielder Damen Mullen is settling in well at Hebburn Town. Here he talks about leaving Blyth for Hebburn, the great start the side has made to the season, and being picked to play at Wembley for Morpeth against his own wishes. Q: We’re 11 games into the league season now, it couldn’t have gone much better so far could it? DM: No definitely not. We had a long build up to the start of the season, but then since the start it has been relentless in terms of the amount of fixtures we’ve had. It definitely couldn’t have gone much better other than turning that defeat at North Shields into a victory to make it a perfect record. To be sat top of the table and a few points ahead, we couldn’t have asked for a much better start. Q: How much are you looking at the league table? I’ve asked players about it previously and they tend to Q: You arrived in the summer after a very long spell say they don’t really look at the league table early on, with Blyth Spartans. What was it like leaving a club but it’s probably starting to take shape a bit now. that you’ve been at for 7+ years? DM: I’m probably the opposite as I do keep a check on the league table. To be sitting at the top with a gap of more than three points, that makes for good reading. I think when you look at it and we are sat on top, it gives you that incentive to keep going, try and build that gap, and not let it slip. You don’t want to be sat at the top and come Christmas or the New Year start sliding down the table. So we have to maintain that and see the season through sitting at the top of the table. Q: There’s a fair bit of competition for those deep-lying midfield positions, you’ve really had to earn your place in the team since joining haven’t you? DM: 100%. It’s a good thing to have so much competition, it may be a cliché but competition for places is healthy and it’s good for lads to try and make the shirt their own. I know the gaffer has a bit of a situation on his hands in terms of selecting an XI every week which is a good thing for us but it must not be a nice thing sometimes as you know you’ll be upsetting lads when they’re not playing. It’s just a case of nobody wants to be left out of the team but you’ve got to look at it as if it’s not a fight off between any of the lads, we all understand, everyone has got each other’s back and as long as the team is doing well – and I know this is another cliché – that’s the main thing. /HebburnTownFC 66 || @HebburnTownFC
DM: I really enjoyed my time at Blyth. I was lucky enough to get promotion with the club from the EvoStik Premier into the National League North, obviously there was that tremendous FA Cup run, we won the Northumberland Senior Cup on a couple of occasions. I’ve made lots of memories of Blyth and the majority of them are good memories. Unfortunately, last season was disappointing for the club and on a personal level it wouldn’t really be how I wanted to finish my career at Blyth. Luckily I don’t have a relegation next to my name as the ongoing situation with the coronavirus meant that Blyth were to stay up. I think because it wasn’t an enjoyable season last year, to come into a club that was successful last season and has continued to be successful, and also to be in a dressing room which already has togetherness and good morale throughout, I’ve really enjoyed making the switch from Blyth to Hebburn.

DM: It’s a bit of a funny one that. I always used to play for Morpeth at the end of most seasons as Blyth’s season would finish and I know Ken (the Morpeth chairman) really well. So I used to sign on a form at the end of the season just to see out the season with them. That particular season I did the same but I signed on earlier than usual as I think you had to sign before the quarter-finals to be eligible for the competition, so I did that to make sure I was available to cover in case of any injuries. We got to the final and it was one of them where the manager at the time wanted me to be a part of it. I said no at first as it wasn’t fair on the lads who had got them to the final and taken them that far but I said I would go down for the experience of going to Wembley as I thought I probably wouldn’t get that opportunity again. On the day of the game the squad was announce and I was in it. I was a bit surprised, but you’re not going to turn round and say take me out of the squad as you don’t know when that will come around again. It would definitely be more special to do it with Hebburn, as I feel like I’m part of the team. Admittedly, I wasn’t part of the cup run to get to the final, I played a part in the semi-final which definitely integrated me into the squad. It’s a completely different feeling this time around. The final is now in the back of everyone’s minds, we don’t really talk about it. We don’t know the date and we have a lot of football to play in other important competitions in the meantime. Q: What are your thoughts going into today’s game against Northallerton, is it just about making sure you get another win and keep building the momentum? DM: Yeah, that’s all we can do. Whichever side is put out on that field at kick-off, it’s all about getting the three points. Yes we want to play great football but you can’t always do that. You look at Tuesday night when we beat Ashington convincingly, the conditions weren’t great and if there was ever a game where you thought you might win ugly, it was probably that night. But we actually played some really good stuff, we defended really well and we deserved the convincing win. Hopefully it will be the same again. We just need to continue what we are doing and that should result in getting three points. The more games we’re winning, it puts pressure on the teams below us as they have to keep winning to stay with us.

Around Hebburn Town
Hebburn Town U23s have been on a very good run of winning form, and have picked up league victories in the last two weeks against FC United of Newcastle and Felling Magpies last weekend. Last weekend's win was a very emphatic 5-0 with John Hobbs getting two goals and Dan Maddison, Ethan Carter, and Ben Robertson all getting one. They currently sit 8th in the Northern Alliance First Division, having won 3 and lost 2 of their opening five games. The 23s play away to Cramlington today. Follow them @TownU23s on Twitter to keep up to date with them. They also do fun content such as their very own 'teammates' interviews. The U18s bounced back from that disappointing game at home to Fylde with a very exciting 6-3 away victory over Darlington FC U18s.

The young Hornets have only been defeated once in the league so far this season. Hebburn Town Veterans have had a very good start to the season. They won last weekend, an emphatic 6-2 home victory over Whitley Bay Seahorses. That win followed up a 5-2 victory over Sunderland Plains Farm the week before. Finally, Hebburn Sports Club were also on the right side of a huge result last week, beating Vigilant FC 5-0 at home with the goals shared out between Ethan Donaghy (2), James Wilson, Nathan Sinclair and an own goal. They are back in league action this weekend when we travel to Perth Green tomorrow.

Northallerton Town Club History Nobody knows the exact formation date of Northallerton Town Football Club, but The Elliott Bowl, a trophy donated by local M.P. Sir George Elliott, was contested for the first time in 1895 carries the club's name as its first winner. Joining the Northern League was a big step for the club as something like £150,000 had to be raised to upgrade the Ainderby Road Ground to Northern League standards.

Early years in the Northern League were difficult but they reached the final of the North Riding County Cup in the 198384 season, unfortunately losing 2-1 to York Railway Institute. The appointment of former Burnley, Leeds United and Middlesbrough star Ray Hankin as manager in March 1989 saw an upturn in the club’s fortunes. Hankin guided them to promotion to the First Division in 198990 having finished runners-up in the Second Division behind champions Murton. Season 1990-91 saw the club consolidate itself in Division One, but at the end of that season Hankin resigned and his number two Geoff Cane was appointed manager. Under Cane, the Club enjoyed great success in both the F.A Trophy and the F.A Cup - reaching the last sixteen in the F.A Trophy in 1992-93 before going out to Farnborough of the Vauxhall Conference - and in the same season they reached the fourth qualifying round of the F.A Cup before narrowly losing at Accrington Stanley. Major ground redevelopment was carried out while Cane was in charge - a new grandstand with seating for 150 spectators was erected together with covered terracing for a further 400 spectators. The open ends behind both goals were also terraced, making the Ainderby Road ground the envy of many. The Club will always be grateful to Geoff as without him most of this work would not have been completed. Unfortunately, off the field disagreements were taking place which resulted in Cane leaving the club at the end of the 1992-93 season. Sadly Geoff passed away in 1995, aged 46. Town were now a force to be reckoned with in the Northern League and they won the League Challenge Cup in 1993-94, when they beat Blyth Spartans 2-0 in the final at Brandon. But this was to be the last game that Northallerton Town Football Club was to play. Disaster struck during the summer of 1994 when they were declared financially insolvent in the High Court and were ordered to close down. Had this happened during the playing season then there is not much doubt that the club would have folded. A new committee was formed and the club was able to kick off the 1994-95 season under the new name of Northallerton F.C. 1994. Still in the First Division of the Northern League, the opening game was Northallerton, League Cup winners, against Durham City, League Champions, in the annual Cleator Cup. After playing a 1-1 draw after extra time, Durham won the cup on penalties. With no money available to reimburse players there was a mass exodus, and many players from local football leagues were brought in. Although these players gave their all it was no surprise when they were relegated at the end of season 1994-95. During season 1995-96, the Club gradually got back on its feet, but after a poor opening the Committee decided that players could once again be reimbursed and many of the club’s former players returned resulting in the Club finishing in a respectable 5th place in the league. During the summer of 1996 the Club was allowed to reinstate the name “Town” to once again become Northallerton Town Football Club (1994), and under the joint guidance of the management duo of Mickey Sell and John Woods, they won promotion back to the First Division when they won the Second Division Championship. For personal reasons both Sell and Woods resigned as joint managers at the end of 1996-97.

After making a disastrous start to life back in the First Division (winning just three points from the first twelve games) the Club appointed former Bristol Rovers, Middlesbrough, Carlisle United and Darlington star Archie Stephens as their manager. But they fared no better, and, after finishing second bottom, they were relegated back to the Second Division. Peter Mulcaster was appointed manager at the start of the 1998-99 season, and he guided the club to a commendable fourth place in the league. But in the February of his second season (1999-00), with the club lying in third place and one of the favourites for promotion, he surprised the club with his shock resignation in order to take the vacant manager’s job at Spennymoor United. He was replaced as manager by the experienced ex-Guisborough Town boss Micky Hodgson, but after failing to win promotion at the first attempt, Hodgson and his assistant Peter Bell left the club at the end of season 2000-01. Peter Mulcaster returned to take over for his second spell as team manager at the start of the 2001-02 season, but after two seasons in charge and failing to get the team promoted, it was mutually agreed that he should leave the club at the end of season 2002-03. The very experienced former Whitby Town captain Paul Burton was appointed manager at the start of the 2003-04 season. Under Burton, Town regained First Division status when they finished runners-up in Division Two at the end of the 2005-06 season, where they also reached the final of the North Riding Senior Cup for the first time in their history - losing 3-1 to York City at Bootham Crescent. The following season (2006-07) they again reached the Senior Cup final - losing 5-0 to a strong Middlesbrough side at Billingham Synthonia. Burton surprised the club at the end of the season by handing in his resignation for what he claims were personal reasons. Mark Fanning, who had been part of the coaching staff at Darlington FC, was appointed. Fanning guided the club to their first silverware in 18 years when they came from behind to beat Second Division champions Team Northumbria 3-2 in the final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup. Fanning and his assistant Martin Collins resigned in March 2013 so Mulcaster returned to take over for a third time, following a good run of results which saw the club reach the final of the Ernest Armstrong Cup again, Mulcaster was offered the job on a permanent basis. Unfortunately Northallerton were beaten 3-1 in the final by West Allotment Celtic. 2014-15 Season saw 3 managers for Town. Peter Mulcaster started the season and saw a good start including an opening day 10 nil win away at Esh Winning. In October Peter resigned and assistant Danny Mellanby took over on a temporary basis. In November Stephen Skinner was appointed and kept Danny as his assistant, but it was only a matter of time before he was lured away to 1st division West Auckland, after he turned down their first approach for him. This time we were happy that Danny Mellanby accepted the role of manager and appointed his good friend Dion Raitt as his assistant. October 2015 saw Danny Mellanby resign as manager. Darren Trotter took over and brought in Richie Farrel as his assistant. May 2016 saw Town beat Ryhope CW 2 nil to win the EA Cup for the 2nd time in 4 years. May 2017 saw Town retain the EA Cup beating 2nd division champions Stockton Town on penalties, and became the only team to win this trophy 3 times. 2017-18 season saw town miss out on promotion on the last day of the season but finished in their highest position for 9 years. In 2018-19 Town won the EA Cup for the fourth time and a 3rd place finish saw us promoted back to Division 1 after 10 seasons in Division 2.

Newcastle Elite Academy are partnered with Hebburn Town which has provided our juniors with some brilliant opportunities as well as giving them a chance to further improve their football.

Club Hebburn was very different back in 1912. The collieries that had changed it from a small agricultural hamlet to a cosmopolitan but pretty grimy industrial town were nearing peak employment of 1,864 men, the shipyards launched by Andrew Leslie were in full vigour and the town, 11 years earlier, had welcome a diminutive Frenchman called Alphonse Reyrolle. Reyrolle opened an engineering works, initially employing just 50 men, in the former dye factory next to St Aloysius’s church. At its peak Reyrolles would employ 12,000 men from a wide range of backgrounds, religions and cultures and export to 70 countries and be known worldwide. The company also started a football team, encouraged by industrialist and mine owner Sir Ralph Carr-Ellison, another famous name in Hebburn history who provided the sports ground on which the Northern League side still plays. Football has played a major part in the life of the town, a cornerstone of its history. Probably it also helped the population forget the harshness of day-to-day life, families of ten and more in insanitary, two-up two-down houses. When the last pit closed in 1931, it had claimed the lives of almost 200 men and boys. There’d been plenty of teams before 1912, of course, notably Hebburn Argyle – kicked off in 1882 by Father Toner, the priest at St Aloysius’s. The town had so many Scots, they became known as the Tyneside Highlanders. Pre-World War 1 derbies with Jarrow would attract crowds of 8,000.The Geordie town also had Shinty and Curling Clubs and even an annual Highland Games, organised by the Hebburn Celtic Society. Alphonse Reyrolle had actively encouraged his workers to take part in sport, including “barefoot” football, and formed the Employees’ Benevolent Association. The team formed in 1912, elected to the second division of the Jarrow and District Junior League, was suitably booted, however. They progressed, flourished in the 1930s, had a wartime season in the North Eastern League, won the Durham Challenge Cup in 1943, and returned to the Northern Combination where they stayed until 1958. In 1959-60, Reyrolles had another season in the terminally ailing North Eastern League but finished bottom with just eight points. The club then had 28 seasons in the Wearside League, and won the league in 1966 and the Monkwearmouth Cup in 1968. In 1988, following the demise of the iconic engineering company A. Reyrolle, the name was changed to Hebburn and application made to join the Northern League – though it was before the days of automatic promotion and relegation and there wasn’t a vacancy. The ground was improved and other clubs canvassed. The break, however, came when North Shields created a vacancy by deciding by deciding to play elsewhere. The team played its first Northern League game on August 19 1989, winning 2-1 at Shotton Comrades, won promotion and the Durham Challenge Cup in 1992 but were relegated – contentiously – for failing to meet ground criteria. They won the Craven Cup in 1999-2000.
History In season 2011/12, Hebburn reached the FA Cup final qualifying round – a dream tie at neighbours Gateshead, from whom they were separated by 125 league places – and secured promotion in third place after a fascinating and exciting final ten games which took the team up to the first division In 2012/13 Hebburn Town met their target of staying in the first division after a nerve racking end to the season. During the close season however manager Paul Bennett decided to leave the club for Jarrow Roofing along with his assistant Dean Nicholson. Unfortunately the team followed suit and in June the club had to start from scratch; two ex-Hebburn players Scott Oliver and Davy Bell took up the challenge and the new management team successfully assembled a squad of mainly young players with a base of experienced players to give the team a good mix. Unfortunately, the very young and somewhat inexperienced side could not avoid relegation although they played with spirit, commitment and enthusiasm throughout the season. The team received many plaudits for their playing style and attitude and also achieved some notable results; although relegated the team got stronger as the season progressed. The squad in 2017/2018 season had a magnificent run from Jan 2018 – May 2018 that saw the Hornets record just 2 losses in all competitions, this fine form secured promotion to the Ebac Northern League Division One by finishing in second place. In their first season back in Division 1, Hebburn finished as runners up. Michael Richardson was the side’s top scorer with 25 goals, and then manager Scott Oliver took the side to the fifth round of the FA Vase. The Vase run was remarkable as the home attendance record was broken twice. 1,302 people attended the game against City of Liverpool in the first round, and 1,310 people were at the game against West Auckland in the fifth round. In the summer of 2019, manager Scott Oliver stepped down from his role and reserve team manager Kevin Bolam stepped up to the role. The new management team of Kevin Bolam and assistant Mick Mulhern had a promising first season in charge, with the team in the promotion hunt before the season was voided as well as reaching the final of the FA Vase which is still yet to be played.
Hebburn Town has now enjoyed 30 seasons and over 1,000 games in the Northern League. Hopefully, they will continue to build on their great legacy for another 1,000 games.

Saturday 24th October Hebburn Town 5-2 Sunderland RCA By Jonny O'Gorman Hebburn Town recovered from a slow start to produce an imperious second half performance that blew away Newcastle Benfield and solidified their position at the top of the Northern League, in an enthralling top of the table clash. Town came into this fixture on the back of a recent dominant run of form, highlighted by their 10-2 demolition of Washington in the Durham Challenge Cup in midweek. Despite their hosts imperious form, Newcastle Benfield showed no signs of intimidation against their title rivals. Benfield started the brighter and after only 8 minutes, stunned the home side, capitalising on a Hebburn defensive mistake to play through forward Abubaker Salim, who slotted the ball under home keeper Mark Foden to take an early lead. Hebburn managed to grow into the game but produced no solid chances to equalise while Benfield also continued to look threatening. Hebburn responded through Thomas Potter, who received the ball on the right before producing a composed finish into the bottom right corner to bring the scores level.

Two goals in quick succession then followed with Town conceding less than five minutes after Potter’s equaliser. Full back Peter Glen-Ravenhill received a pass to the right before finishing low into the left corner. This was quickly followed by Hebburn who once again clawed themselves back into the game, when Cedwyn Scott was brought down in the box with referee Stephen Dial pointing to the spot. Cedwyn Scott then stepped up and fired home into the right corner. Hebburn came out after the half time interval rejuvenated and just after the hour mark, Dan Groves put Hebburn into the lead for the first time in the match, picking up the ball inside the Benfield half and embarking on a marauding run into the box before rifling home a ferocious strike past the Benfield goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, Hebburn were awarded another penalty, almost a carbon copy of the first. Once again Cedwyn Scott was brought down and once again he stepped up to dispatch the penalty which handed Hebburn a two-goal lead. Scott was a man targeted throughout the game and twice both sets of players tempers flared over the perceived targeting by Benfield of Town’s number 15. The tempestuous nature of the second half was signified in the 74th minute when Joe Robson received his marching orders after he was awarded a second yellow card for another foul on Scott. With the game approaching full time, Hebburn Town still looked for a fifth goal. Their pressure was awarded when Thomas Potter completed the scoring by bagging his second goal of the game after he got on the end of a through ball by Town substitute Michael Richardson. The full-time whistle blew and Hebburn maintain their lead at the top of the table.
Tuesday 27th October Ashington AFC 1-6 Hebburn Town
Olly Martin then came off the bench to grab a brace with goals in the 74th minute and 92nd minute. The Hornets went into the game full of confidence as victory in a top of the table clash against Newcastle Benfield at the weekend extended their winning run to seven games. Meanwhile, Ashington were looking to bounce back after Saturday’s defeat against Consett brought an end to their eight game unbeaten run. In the early exchanges Hebburn threatened more with Louis Storey having a good chance and Tom Potter’s strike almost catching out goalkeeper Adam McHugh, while down the other end former Hornet Luke Salmon’s half chance was the only real action. And Hebburn made their danger pay just after the quarter hour when Michael Richardson played a fantastic lobbed through ball into the box and Scott was on the end of it and hit it on the bounce to brilliantly lob McHugh. The Hornets continued on the front foot and it wasn’t long before they doubled their lead when Amar Purewal broke down the left and centred for Scott who took a touch before adding a deft finish inside the near post. The visitors continued to have most of the chances throughout the rest of the first half, but didn’t have another clear attempt at goal from their dominance before the break. Purewal had a good chance to get that third goal a quarter of an hour into the second period, Richardson broke forward and slide the ball across to Purewal who saw his low finish go agonisingly wide of the right post. And the goal did come just a minute later. Potter tested the ‘keeper with a strike from outside the box and McHugh’s save dropped to Scott to fire home the rebound and grab his hat-trick. Hebburn, on top and now three goals up, looked out of sight, but this only lasted a minute before Harmison cut the deficit back to two. A ball over the top found the striker in-behind the defence and he switched onto his left foot and arrowed the ball into the left corner.
Man in form Cedwyn Scott starred again as his four goals helped Hebburn Town to a 6-1 away victory over Ashington AFC in the Northern League. Scott made it 18 goals from his last eight games, and 19 goals for the season to help extend Hebburn’s lead at the top of the Northern League to seven points. He opened the scoring in the 17th minute and added a second just seven minutes later. Scott completed his hat-trick in the 61st minute before Ben Harmison responded immediately by pulling a goal back for Ashington in the 62nd minute. But Scott restored the three goal lead within a minute to grab his fourth of the game.
But again it was only a minute before the next goal went in. Things went from bad to worse for the home side as their captain Curtis Coppen was shown a straight red card for a sly dig at Scott off the ball. Martin came off the bench as part of a Hebburn triple substitution in the 71st minute and made an impact almost immediately when he showed great footwork to break inside the box and he added a brilliant finish into the corner inside the near post. The substitute then rounded off the victory two minutes into added time when some good pressure from Purewal allowed him to steal the ball in midfield and he broke into the box before firing into the opposite corner.

We put the spotlight on our next Northern League opponents. We are scheduled to travel to Teesside to face Thornaby AFC away from home on Wednesday. Once again we will be on the road in midweek as we are set to travel to Teesside to play Thornaby FC on Wednesday night. Thornaby have had a very encouraging start to the season, sitting 8th after 11 games, with six wins to their name.

They were on a run of six league games undefeated, four of those being wins, before a 5-2 defeat at home to Shildon last weekend. A caveat to that unbeaten run is that they were on the end of a defeat in the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Vase, a heavy 4-1 away defeat against Northern League Division Two side Newcastle University. The Blues have an ongoing Covid-19 situation, with a number of backroom staff affected, and so their away game against West Auckland this weekend has been called off. It is yet to be decided whether our fixture will also be postponed, if so, our next game is at home next Saturday against another Teesside team in Billingham Town. Teesdale Park is a large old ground which used to be surronded by terracing, and is a former home of Stockton Town as well, and is still able of hosting 5,000 spectators. Within their ranks, the immediate name that stands out is former Middlesbrough FC and Hartlepool goalkeeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos. A Greece international with over 100 appearances in the Championship to his name, including starting every game as Middlesbrough won promotion to the Premier League in 2015-16. We only played against Thornaby once last season before it came to a premature end. The game in question was a 4-1 home defeat, where the Hornets took an early lead and looked comfortable with it initially before a turnaround meant that Thornaby were 2-1 up at half-time. They outplayed us in the second half and ran out deserved winners.

Editor’s Notes Hello and welcome back to the Green Energy Stadium for yet another home game, this time against Northallerton Town FC. I'd also like to extend a very warm welcome to what I'm sure won't be a very warm South Tyneside to all the Northallerton players, staff, officials and fans who have travelled up from North Yorkshire. What a week, eh? Firstly, the lads showed incredible strength of character in that Newcastle Benfield game. They came out of the blocks slow, and weren't playing at their usual very high standards to begin with. So to turn that around, coming from a goal behind twice, and going on to put in a dominant second half performance to win 5-2 was an excellent display. They then followed that up with a stunning performance away at Ashington. The Colliers had been in excellent form until a defeat on Saturday, and have plenty of quality. On the night, there was a significant gap between the quality of performance between the two sides, and it showed on the scoreline with us winning 6-1. There has been some brilliant performances this season, but I'd honestly put that Ashington game down as the best league display of the season. Playing in awful wind, on a slightly heavy pitch after a bit of rain earlier in the day, the football the lads served up was well worth sitting in the freezing cold. There was some lovely play, and I'm sure most of you will have seen the opening goal by now, which looks like it comes from a much higher level than the Northern League.
The lads now need to keep that performance going as they look for another three points against Northallerton. The consistency this season has been outstanding, and they have had a much more solid backbone than they showed last season when it comes to turning games around when they haven't started well, the only blip being the North Shields game. And it is consistency that wins leagues. We have come off the back of wins against two sides who were in very good form ahead of those games, but those performances will be quickly forgotten if we don't keep the momentum going. Northallerton are much improved on the side that were sitting bottom upon last season's abandonment. They have already picked up three league wins, half of what they achieved last season, and 12 points (they only managed 19 last campaign). Looking through their squad, there are a lot of names that are familiar to me. Nathaniel Skidmore was at Ryhope when I was media officer there. He was actually a player I rated very highly, a classy central midfielder who was comfortable with the ball and had great vision. Micky Rae was also part of the same Ryhope team, he was so reliable in front of goal. If you find him in the box, you could be very confident he will convert the chance. Kieron Ezard put on an excellent display against us in the Vase last season for Sunderland RCA. Coming on after their first choice 'keeper was sent off, he kept us frustrated for so long, but we eventually got the better of him. One thing is for certain, no matter what the league table says, this is not going to be an easy game. Enjoy the game, Kieran Archer
