Backup Alarm - Test
SMCS - 7406-081
Turn the engine start switch key to the ON position in order to perform the test. Apply the service brake.
Move the transmission direction control lever to the REVERSE position.
i01082723
The alarm should start to sound immediately. The alarm will continue to sound until the transmission direction control lever is moved to the NEUTRAL position or to the FORWARD position.

Illustration 1 g00513908
The backup alarm is located behind the grill on the rear of the machine.

Illustration 2 g00103240
A three-position switch at the rear of the backup alarm regulates the sound of the alarm (high, low, and medium).
The alarm is set at the maximum sound level when the machine is shipped from the factory. The setting should remain on high, unless the job site requires a lower sound level.

Battery or Battery Cable - Inspect/Replace
SMCS - 1401-040; 1401-510; 1402-040; 1402-510
Personal injury may occur from failure to properly service the batteries.
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode. Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts the skin or eyes.
Prevent sparks near the batteries. Sparks could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jumper cable ends to contact each other or the engine. Improper jumper cable connections can cause an explosion.
Always wear protective glasses when working with batteries.
1. Prepare the machine for maintenance. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, Prepare the Machine for Maintenance.
2. Turn the engine start switch key OFF. Turn all of the switches OFF.
3. Turn the battery disconnect switch OFF. Remove the key.
4. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the disconnect switch.
Note: Do not allow the disconnected battery cable to contact the disconnect switch.
5. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
6. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery.
7. Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion. Inspect the battery cables for wear or damage.
8. Make any necessary repairs. If necessary, replace the battery cables or the battery.
9. Connect the positive battery cable at the battery.
10. Connect the negative battery cable at the battery.
11. Connect the battery cable at the battery disconnect switch.
12. Install the key and turn the battery disconnect switch ON.

Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace
SMCS - 1357-025; 1357-040; 1357-510
Adjusting the Compressor Drive Belt
1. Stop the engine in order to inspect the air conditioner belt.
2. Open the engine hood.

1
3. Inspect the condition of the compressor drive belt and the adjustment of the compressor drive belt. A used compressor drive belt should measure 400 ± 44 N (90 ± 10 lb). Measure the tension by using a Boroughs Gauge BT-33-97. A used belt has been in service for thirty minutes. A new compressor drive belt should measure 534 ± 22 N (120 ± 5 lb). Measure the tension on a Borroughs Gauge BT-33-97. If the tension of the compressor drive belt is acceptable, then proceed to Step 8. If the air compressor belt needs adjustment, then continue to the next step.

2
4. Loosen the compressor locknut (2). Loosen the mounting bolts (3) and (4).
5. Turn the adjusting nut (1) until the correct belt tension is reached.
6. Tighten the compressor locknut (2) to 150 ± 20 N·m (110 ± 15 lb ft). Tighten the mounting bolts (3) and (4).
7. Recheck the measurement of the belt.
8. Close the engine hood. Start the engine. If poor cooling is still experienced, turn off the air conditioner. Stop the engine. Notify your Caterpillar dealer for air conditioner system service, if necessary.
Adjusting the Alternator Belt

Illustration 3
1. Open the engine hood. The alternator is on the right side of the machine. Pull the cable in order to open the engine access door on the right side of the machine.

Illustration 4 g00536037
2. Inspect the condition of the alternator belt (5) and the adjustment of the alternator belt. A used alternator belt should measure 400 ± 44 N (90 ± 10 lb). Measure the tension on a Borroughs Gauge BT-33-72C. A used belt has been used for thirty minutes. A new alternator belt should measure 534 ± 22 N (120 ± 5 lb) on a Borroughs Gauge BT-33-72C. If the tension of the alternator belt is acceptable, then proceed to Step 7. If the alternator belt needs adjustment, then continue to the next step.
3. Loosen the bolts (3) that mount the alternator (4). Loosen the locknut (2).
4. Turn the adjusting locknut (1) until the correct tension is reached.
5. Tighten adjusting locknut (2). Tighten the mounting bolt (3).
6. Recheck the measurement of the belt.
7. Close the engine access door. Close the engine hood.

1. Turn the engine start switch to the ON position. The alert indicator for brake oil pressure should come on if the braking system is not at normal operating pressure.
2. Start the engine. Run the engine at half speed for 2 minutes in order to increase the accumulator pressure. The alert indicator for brake oil pressure should go off.
3. Stop the engine by turning the machine start switch to off. Wait 5 seconds then turn machine start switch to on, but do not start the engine. Wait for the display monitor to go through
startup, key on level checks, and operator selection. Apply the service brakes (fully depress the pedal) for a duration of one second. Release the pedal for a duration of one second. Repeat the application and release process until the alert indicator for brake oil presure comes on. This will decrease the accumulator pressure. A minimum of five applications of the service brake pedal are required.
4. If the alert indicator comes on after less than five applications of the brake, measure the accumulator precharge pressure. An authorized Caterpillar dealer can measure the nitrogen gas pressure in the accumulator. Use only dry nitrogen gas for recharging.

Braking System - Test
SMCS - 4251-081; 4267-081
• Fasten the seat belt before you test the brakes.
• Park the machine on a dry, level surface.
i01739721
• Check the area around the machine. Make sure that the machine is clear of personnel and clear of obstacles.
• Make sure that the steering frame lock is in the unlocked position.
The following tests are used to determine whether the braking system is functional. These tests are not intended to measure the maximum brake holding effort. The required brake holding effort for sustaining a machine at a specific engine rpm varies from one machine to another machine. The variations include differences in the engine setting, the power train efficiency, the brake holding ability, etc.
Service Brake Holding Ability Test
Personal injury can result if the machine moves while testing.
If the machine begins to move during test, reduce the engine speed immediately and engage the parking brake.
1. Start the engine. Raise the implement slightly. Apply the service brake. Release the parking brake.
2. Move the transmission control to THIRD SPEED FORWARD while the service brakes are applied. Make sure that the autoshift control is in the OFF position.
3. Gradually increase the engine speed to high idle. The machine should not move.
4. Reduce the engine speed to low idle. Move the transmission direction control to the NEUTRAL position. Engage the parking brake. Lower the implement to the ground. Stop the engine.
If the machine moved during the test, consult your Caterpillar dealer for a brake inspection. Make any necessary repairs before the machine is returned to operation.
