Welcome back everyone and a typically wonderful busy start to the term. It’s been great to see how well our new pupils have settled in and the way that they have been supported by staff and fellow pupils.

I did ask a new Form I pupil (who shall remain nameless) what her favourite thing was about Heathfield and she said, with a very wide grin, ‘EVERYTHING!’ How terrific that she is already showing that Heathfield enthusiasm.

For those of you who aren't aware we are extremely proud of our sterling A Level and GCSE results this summer; the girls supported by the most wonderful team of staff did well. I am very grateful to all who contributed.

Exeat beckons this weekend and whether I see you on the side of the lacrosse pitch, the netball court, the swimming pool, at the new Parents’ lunch or at one of the Our Vision, our Future suppers I look forward to seeing you again soon.

Head Girl Team 2019 - 2020 The Head Girl Team (2019-2020) is composed of Minty, Olivia, and Amelia. Minty and Olivia have been boarding since Form I and Amelia has been boarding since Form III but has also experienced being a day girl in that period.

I’m Minty, Head Girl. As well as being an Academic Scholar I participate in the 1st Lacrosse and Polo teams. I’m studying English Literature, Spanish, Maths and Economics A Levels and hope to go to Oxbridge. I’ve always had an interest in drama and being Grade 6 I hope this progresses. Another passion of mine is working alongside the OSCAR Foundation in which I am an International Young Leader.

I’m Amelia, one of the Deputy Head Girls. I play in the 1st Lacrosse team and love playing other sports such as athletics and swimming. For my A Levels, I am studying Classical Civilisation, History of Art and English Literature. I am also taking Leith's Food and Wine Course alongside SAT testing as I hope to go to USC or Yale in America for university. I have a passion for helping others and I am involved in a school for slum children in Bangalore and Bali which I have visited and continue to work with.

I'm Olivia, the other Deputy Head Girl. I love playing tennis and swimming and I was previously the swim captain. I am studying English Literature, History and Economics alongside online courses called MOOC. I am very passionate about helping animals and will travel to Burma in my gap year to volunteer in elephant sanctuaries. I hope to go to St Andrews or Edinburgh for university.

This year we are continuing to build the bonds between year groups and sustaining the sense of respect in school. We are planning to not only integrate within the school but also widen our social reach by doing events, such as charitable ones, with other neighbouring schools. We want to help Heathfield girls to step out of their comfort zones. Furthermore, we would like to adopt a Green Policy and become more environmentally friendly, by truly cutting down on the use of plastic and making sure all paper is recycled along with many other actions.

There are many new faces this year which is exciting so it has become one of our priorities to make sure each new girl feels welcome and included. To do so, we have set our minds to

this task and aim to visit the younger pupils once or twice a week to check up on them and Past Issues form friendships. We hope to popularise the crush system (a tradition at Heathfield) to familiarise the younger pupils with the upper years.

Form III Trip to Henfold Lakes At the start of term Form V faced a challenge of completing an obstacle in the mud! This was an opportunity for old and new girls to come together and show teamwork as well as individual grit and resilience.

After an initial warm-up of army crawling and pushing each other around in a giant wheelbarrow, the girls found themselves in front of what can only be described as a giant hole full of muddy water, with a grubby cargo net on the other side to get themselves out.

After much screaming and shock at the cold water, the girls all entered the pit followed by their intrepid tutors not wanting to be accused of only being spectators.

Two hours later, after more mud pits, crawling through metal tubes, sliding down fireman poles and facing down many existing fears especially of heights, we reached the end. The girls may have been bruised and battered but they had also shown real character to complete the course. Form III showed great teamwork as they cheered each other on and

helped each other out of muddy pits.

Rationed showering and a quick lunch were enjoyed in the sunshine before returning to school, where a bed was a welcome reward.

Form V Youth Leadership Programme Form V has embarked on an 8-week block of Youth Leadership training led by International keynote speaker Leela Bassi.

We are extremely fortunate to have Leela with us to deliver the program: she was a member of the first all-women diversity team to trek 100km across the arctic in temperatures of -40 and winds, at times, over 80 mph.

The girls are acquiring the invaluable life skills of public speaking: how to prepare and deliver a speech, how to present themselves and instill in them the confidence to deliver a speech to a group of people. To date, we have had some inspirational, emotional and humorous 3-minute speeches delivered by Bella, Cesca, Lexi, Lilly P, Maya, Roxy, Scarlett, and Sienna.

Guest Artist Workshops in the Music Department The Music Department welcomed two guest artists to music lessons and workshops in the

Recording Studio in the first two weeks of term.

Dr Randy Mayfield, Missionary Pastor, and Musician began his day at Heathfield singing You Raise Me Up in Chapel and then continued as a guest teacher in the Music Department.

Dr Mayfield is an accomplished singer and songwriter and the girls loved his lessons which included performances with a heavy dose of humour mixed with his musical talent and sincerity.

On Sunday 15 September Tom Worrall ran a Workshop in Heathfield’s Recording Studio.

Tom is a dynamic musician who has played piano, keyboards, drums, and percussion in many West End shows. He is also an accomplished Sound Engineer and Music Producer and taught the girls how to use and get the best out of all the equipment in the school’s own Recording Studio.

Introduction to the Leith’s Certificate in Food and Wine On Tuesday 10 September the Leiths Academy Principal, Alison Cavaliero, introduced the Lower Sixth students to the five-term course. She explained how and why Prue Leith started the Cookery School in London and how it has evolved into one of the most prestigious and respected schools in the country. Alison gave an overview of the skills and techniques the girls will be taught and the varied dishes they will be cooking during the course. She also outlined the course objectives, lesson structure, and methods of assessment.

Alison then showed girls the selection of engraved chef's knives they will be using and explained how to sharpen and care for them. This was followed with a demonstration of some of the initial basic skills such as slicing and chopping an onion, blocking off a carrot

and then cutting it into batons and julienne strips, dicing vegetables, slicing an apple, Past Issues chopping herbs, crushing garlic and preparing lemon wedges. Alison made fennel, orange and watercress salad, a tomato salad, French dressing, mayonnaise and prepared a selection of cruditĂŠs. Whilst she worked she explained the various techniques and emphasised the importance of correct seasoning and presentation.

The students listened intently and asked interesting questions. At the end, they had an opportunity to taste the dishes and discuss the food and recipes. Ideas were shared and their enthusiasm was evident throughout. The girls will start their practical sessions next week, having completed a Level 2 Food Safety Certificate, which they can use to gain holiday work.

Art Department Welcomes UAL The Art Department welcomed Sian Harris from The University of the Arts London (UAL) to Heathfield on Thursday 19 September. Ms Harris gave a presentation to Sixth Form Art, Drama and Photography students who are interested in attending either Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, Chelsea, Wimbledon, London College of Communication and Camberwell. Many of our current students are interested in pursuing creative pathways including, Architecture, Journalism, Film, Marketing and Performing Arts as well as Fashion and Fine Art. We are delighted to have an extremely high success rate of student applications to UAL which is ranked second in the world for Art and Design according to the 2019 QS World University RankingsÂŽ.

Auditions for the Heathfield production of Sweet Charity Girls from Form III to Upper Sixth have been auditioning for singing, acting and dancing parts for the upcoming school production of Sweet Charity.

Arguably one of the best known musical theatre heroines, Charity Hope Valentine is a girl who wanted to be loved. It is one of the most famous shows by legendary director and choreographer Bob Fosse and Sweet Charity boasts a laugh-a-minute script.

Featuring much-loved classics like Hey, Big Spender and Rhythm of Life among its showstopping score, Sweet Charity captures the spirit of the ‘60s in There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This! Everyone is very excited about taking part.

Members of Lower Sixth will once again go to Eton on a Friday evening to join with boys from Eton to support local children and young people at Phab night. Phab is a nationwide charity that inspires and supports children, young people, and adults with and without disabilities to make more of life together. The girls are also planning to host a BBQ and games night at Heathfield as well as our popular Phab concert.

Trampolining has proved to be a popular choice for our younger members of the school community and Mr Trouble’s Friday’s cookery is a top choice amongst Forms I and II. Another highlight is the war of words between Dr Bradshaw and Mrs Gardiner Legge and members of the debating club which sees girls from Form I upwards mixing with members of the UVI to form cohesive arguments and think on their feet.

Joint House Shield Winners Dinners Under the leadership of Flo and Impi, our two new House Captains, de Valois House headed out to Wagamama's restaurant on Tuesday evening. While everyone enjoyed the delicious meal it was also a great opportunity for all girls, old and new to celebrate last terms House Shield win while relaxing and enjoying getting to know each other.

Miss Janet Talbot, Head of House - de Valois Fifty-eight Somerville House students enjoyed a victory supper at Pizza Express, Bracknell to celebrate winning the House Shield. New House Captains Imaan and Kiki along with the rest of Somerville girls from Form I to Upper Sixth socialised happily together.

After a hectic start to the term the students all enjoyed a night off and it was great for new girls to mix with the old hands over a meal.

Welcome Lunch for New Parents On Friday 20 September we welcomed parents of new girls in Forms I, II, III, IV and Lower Sixth to join us for lunch. Tutors, Boarding Staff, and the Day Girl Co-ordinator greeted parents at the drinks reception in the Foyer of St Mary’s Theatre.

After a warm welcome by Mrs Gardiner Legge, lunch was a lovely opportunity for new parents to meet and get to know each other better. Members of the Senior Leadership Team gave a brief resume of the girls’ activities during their first weeks at Heathfield. Finally, a fun slideshow featuring all the new girls was a great insight into their lives at school since the beginning of term.

SPORTS REPORT Netball and Lacrosse On Saturday 70 Heathfield girls travelled to the other side of Ascot for a morning of sport!

All age groups played both Netball and Lacrosse. It was a hot but successful morning. There were some great successes and some lessons to be learned.

The senior teams led the way, beating St George’s at both Netball and Lacrosse convincingly! The U12 teams played well, particularly as it was their first game playing together in netball, and a lot of them have not played lacrosse before.

Congratulations to all the girls who were awarded player of the match and well done to all the girls who took part.

Netball Players of the match: U12A Eliora & Tamara, U12B – Lily T, Mafalda and Tia-Vy; U13A- Sarah, U13B – Faline & Milly P; U14A - Tami & Ella; U14B - Bella G & Tessa C, U15A – Katrina RC; U15B – Carina & Thea.

Lacrosse Players of the match: Senior A - All of you!; Senior B - Tamara. Lacrosse POM: U13 -Olivia Callanan, U14 –Ella, Orianna & Rachael; U15 –Ella, Nina, & Tara.

On Tuesday 17 September, U13 A & B Netball teams went to LVS in their second netball match of the season. U13A Won 18-5 POM Jazzy & Meeka and U13B Won 10-4 POM Honor & Mia. Thank you to Kiki, our sports captain, for helping umpire.

Swimming On Monday 16 September we competed in a swimming gala against St George’s, Ascot. It was great to see so many girls taking part in the first gala of the year. Congratulations to all girls who participated and we look forward to the second gala against St George’s in a few weeks.

Equestrian Riding and Polo at Heathfield are now in full swing, with a record number of riders now attending our weekly lessons. Twenty-eight riders attend the Berkshire Riding Centre and nineteen Polo players train with HK Polo Academy and Cool Hooves.

Our show jumpers have had a great summer, with the fantastic news of Laura (Form II) qualifying for the NSEA Championships in October.

Calia (Form V) also had a good summer competing in Tetrathlons and show jumping events throughout the south of England.

Kiki (LVI), Minty (LVI) and Rosaleen (Form III) all played at the Pony Club polo championships at Cowdray polo club in August where Kiki was presented with the prestigious Catherine Yates Award. Kiki was also part of the winning champions team in the HPA Buckmaster under 19 team.

Vavara (Form III) was part of the winning champions team in the Hipwood under 14 HPA Junior polo championships.

The Polo players will have their first tournament of the year at Black Bears Arena on Sunday 13th October, taking part in the SUPA Girls Arena Championships.

Austen Weekend 7 – 8 September After a morning of lacrosse, the first weekend of term saw the girls compete in a House Festival; each House had a different decade as their theme, being tasked with creating a fashion show, making clothes from bin bags and crepe paper, and practising and performing a song and dance in only an afternoon.

The end product was a celebration of culture and Heathfield spirit with Austen winning the Fashion Show, Seacole winning the Dance, de Valois winning the Team-Work Award and Somerville winning the Song and Overall Winner prize.

On Sunday the girls were treated to some inflatable events including Hungry Hippos, Gladiators and Laser Quest. Girls also baked Rocky Road cakes and enjoyed a calming spa in their common rooms.

Dr Snow also held the International Tea-Party where girls were invited to play games and eat traditional English treats such as scones and cake.

DeValois Weekend 14-15 September Following an action-packed morning of sport, Bronte House (Forms I to III) enjoyed several activities including macramĂŠ, a photoshoot, time with Lola the new school puppy and a chance to catch up with friends in the late summer sunshine.

Form V headed off for an afternoon in Basingstoke followed by dinner out as a year group.

On Saturday evening the House Captains hosted a singalong movie night in St Mary’s Theatre with lots of treats.

On Sunday morning lots of girls headed off to Marwell Zoo with the added element of capturing the cutest, most camouflaged and most like yourself animal photo competition. Upper Sixth enjoyed cooking in their own kitchens in Wyatt House.
