I cannot believe that it is the end of term already. The Lent term is always a busy one and

this one has surpassed itself with concerts, performances, fashion shows, lacrosse battles and so much more across the board. These are all events which take place at every school but only at Heathfield does the same girl participate in every single one and excel across the board. That is what Heathfield is all about: discovering and developing every girl’s unique talent to enable her to excel and it has, again, been a term of excellence.

We swept the board in the LVS Music Festival winning numerous Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, we came 25th out of 56 schools in National Schools’ Lacrosse with a Heathfield first as we made Division 1 for the first time in our history, despite being the smallest school there! Plus our Fashion Show which surpassed all expectations demonstrating Purpose to all.

This week alone we have had our wonderful Old Girls donating their time to come back and share life outside Heathfield to our Sixth Form and ways to get ahead. We are always aware that we are not just preparing your daughters for Higher Education but for a world where they must give back and stand on their own two feet for the rest of their lives.

As Headmistress I must thank everyone who has dedicated so much of their time, efforts and talents to ensuring that the very best happens at Heathfield. Thank you #team.

Science Week This year the theme for Science Week was Journeys; as Heathfield is celebrating 120 years since being founded, it made complete sense to try and combine these two facts. The most obvious choice was to set an inter-house competition in which the girls were challenged to send 120 Pringles 120km by post and see how many of them remained undamaged. Austen House won the challenge of managing a grand total of 9!

Other 120 challenges included making 120 sided and faced shapes called rhombicosidodecahedronanddisdyakis triacontahedra respectively, the whole school were called upon to model element 120 Unbinilium on the school field and an ice model of 120 molecules of water was made.

The Maths Department were keen to be involved and set a variety of 120-second maths challenges. The Science Department had set itself the challenge of completing 120 different experiments during Science Week, contributions from Open Day and Science Club all helped as well as a variety of practicals carried out across all the different years in the school. These included setting off rockets, chemical painting, lighting whoosh bottles, making models of blood, performing heart dissections, making wind up cars, looking at the harmonics and the speed of sound and diffraction with a laser to name just 8!

All 120 were achieved with photographs taken as evidence. The week concluded with girls being challenged to eat insects with the promised treat of liquid nitrogen ice cream on a stick with marshmallows as a reward.

Heathfield Fashion Show and Black Tie Dinner The Heathfield Fashion Show 2019 presented a glorious celebration of creativity on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 March. A fitting way to commemorate 120 years of Heathfield. It was the most spectacular show and everyone in the audience was incredibly impressed with the professionalism of all the designers and models, parent of Upper Sixth Designer.

The black-tie dinner held on Thursday 21 March welcomed leading professionals from the fashion industry including Karen Diamond, owner of Models 1, Denza Fashion Recruitment Agency, and Stephen Lisseman, former Creative Director of Lagerfeld and Gucci. This networking event cemented Heathfield’s place as a leading national provider for Art Education.

The fashion show entitled Purpose’ presented the work of GCSE and A Level students, as well as the Designer in Residence Louise Holloway. This year’s show was the best yet and exemplifies the importance we place upon personalised learning and teaching by working with individual interests and needs, Mrs Eve Feilen, Subject Leader for Art and Design.

I was extremely impressed with the level of creativity and the sophistication of the execution. Many of the outfits were runway worthy, far beyond the world of a student show, parent of Form V We were delighted that Berkeley Homes chose to sponsor this event and that their investment in Heathfield School will have a permanence for all future productions yet to come.

Isabella Blow was a former Heathfield student, and we were extremely grateful that the Isabella Blow Foundation sent some of her personal pieces from The Daphne Guinness Collection; garments created by Alexander McQueen, who she discovered and propelled to stardom. This was a wonderful addition to the evening and resonated with all those who attended the event to support up-and-coming talent.

The Fashion Show on Friday 22 March also presented the work of Forms II & III, who had produced wearable sculptures and Frida Khalo inspired tops in their Textiles lessons with Miss Smith. It was great to see such enthusiasm from our younger students.

Prep School Swimming Gala At our annual Prep Schools Swim Gala, we welcomed Year 4 and 5 teams from Broomwood

Hall, Eaton House, Eton End, Garden House, Glendower and Redcliffe School. All the girls swam brilliantly and a new Gala record was set for Butterfly by Amelie (Year 5) representing Glendower.

After a tough competition, the girls enjoyed a yummy afternoon tea before prize giving. Third place overall was Broomwood Hall, second Glendower and in first place Garden House. Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you again at Heathfield very soon.

Pergolesi Stabat Mater Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater was written in 1736, in the final weeks of his life, and achieved great popularity after his death at the early age of 26 from tuberculosis. The Senior Choir performed eleven of the fourteen movements to a select audience in the Chapel on the Friday of Exeat on March 15.

Notable solos were sung by Lexi (Form IV), Sophia (LVI), Sophie (Form V) and Tansy (LVI), as well as the duet, Santa Mater, Istud Agas sung by Tansy and Sophia (LVI). Sadly, Lulu was poorly on the day and so Mrs Worrall stepped in to sing her part with Lucy (Form III) in the duet, Inflammatus.

The choir gave very credible performances of the opening and closing movements as well as the 40-second long, Pro Peccatis Suae Gentis and the Top 12 tackled the very fast fugue entitled, Fac Ut Ardeum Cor Meum extremely well. Jean-Jacques Rousseau praised the opening movement of the Stabat Mater as the most perfect and touching duet to come from the pen of any composer.

Thanks go to Miss Kong for accompanying the choir and toMrs Liepa for adding beautiful touches of the violin.

Duke of Edinburgh – Bronze Award A wet and windy weekend saw 14 intrepid Form III girls brave the elements to try out their skills as navigators and explorers.

The day started very pleasantly with breakfast in the Sixth Form kitchen. Then we pitched tents in a sheltered area of the school grounds, ensuring they were strongly secured and zipped up tight against the elements.

Our starting point for the expedition was Swinley Park where we navigated through open heath and old ice houses. Once in Swinley Forest, we had to navigate to Mill Pond, Lower Star, and Ceasers Camp. Even though there are lots of designated pathways it was still easy to become disorientated and to stray onto the wrong path.

The nights camping was blustery and wet and not much sleep was had but we woke early ready to start our breakfast cooking and a nice hot chocolate.

On the second day, we were driven out to Windsor and the Long Walk where we made our way to the Copper Horse and down through the park. The students had to get to Ascot Racecourse through Windsor Great Park and eventually managed to cross the course to make a homeward trek.

Happily tired and with sore feet we enjoyed warm showers and a slice of Pizza.

Rotary Great Britain & Ireland (RIBI) Young Musician Competition On Sunday 17 March, I competed in the district final of the Rotary Young Musician of the year. I sang a selection of songs including my solo Fac Ut Portem from the Stabat Mater performed by the Heathfield choir in chapel last Friday. I really enjoyed the experience, performing in front of both familiar and unfamiliar faces.

Tansy, Seacole House Captain & Head of Choir The Music Department is extremely proud of Tansy's musical performance at the Rotary District Final. She was up against an extremely high level of competition this year.

Although Tansy did not go forward to the Regional Final, her successful performance has led to her being engaged to sing in two other concerts showcasing young talent. Well done Tansy! Unfortunately, Lulu (Form III) was unwell and unable to compete but we hope both Lulu and Tansy achieve more successes next year.

Polo On Saturday 24 March Heathfield entered two teams in the SUPA National Junior Schools Arena Championships at Black Bears Polo Club.

The Heathfield Emeralds won their division, congratulations to Julia and Marley (Form I) with our coaches son Hari, what a great result. Heathfield Mix, Isobel, and Yeonjae (Form I) and Hari's brother Kam were third in their division. A great result for their first competitive match.

FELLOWSHIP St Mary’s Wantage Reunion Lunch We were delighted to hold our second St Mary’s Wantage Reunion Lunch on Wednesday 20 March. Heathfield welcomed 22 Old Girls back for drinks and lunch, followed by a Chapel Service with Fr David and we rounded the day off with a delicious tea.

During the afternoon we were able to show the Old Girls St Mary’s theatre and the STEM building. As we continue to grow our bonds with St Mary's Old Girls and with increasing numbers now signing up to our database we look forward to seeing even more Old Girls return to the next reunion lunch.

Fellowship Networking Evening On Wednesday 27 March we held a Networking Evening with Sixth Form. We were so lucky to have ten of our Old Girls return from a myriad of different careers.

They brought their thoughts and expertise together with truths about the successes and pitfalls during their journey from Heathfield to current careers. The advice given regarding universities and employment is invaluable to the girls as they approach their own launch into unchartered waters.

Thank you to Emily Broughton, Georgina Colquhoun, Suzie Cullen, Charlotte Faber, Julianna Hicks, Alice Orr-Ewing, Camilla Ridley-Day, Charlotte Sutherell, and Ilaria Valaydon Pyke who brought the Heathfield warmth and spirit with them, engaged our girls and helped bridge school with the outside world.

My personal thanks to our delightful and engaging Sixth Form who immersed themselves in the evening offering wonderful social engagement with the guests and each other, it was a pleasure to have spent the evening with them.

Adult Nursing Student at Cardiff University Nursing is a very rewarding university degree and career path. From working in hospitals, the community and in lecture theatres, I have learned various skills required of a nurse; care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. These skills are known as "the 6Cs"; they underpin everyday nursing and midwifery practice and are embedded into everything in nursing (and midwifery) care staff does.

Studying nursing at Cardiff University is exciting, yet also challenging. Cardiff University has provided me with the skills and knowledge to strive to become a registered nurse next year, where I will be able to make a huge difference to people’s lives; a value that not many professions can offer.

I chose to study nursing at university because of the rewarding nature of the course and career path. Witnessing my youngest cousin go through chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat a brain tumor massively increased my desire to pursue a career in nursing.

Additionally, mental health problems have for me, always been close to home. My desire to pursue a career in nursing was confirmed during the summer of 2015 when I completed three weeks of work experience at various institutions including The Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth, Compton House Nursing Home, and Chailey Heritage Special Needs School.

At Cardiff University, the nursing degree is a three-year course. During the second year of the degree, nursing students are given the opportunity to go abroad. Fortunately, my family has friends who live in South Africa. I, therefore, got in contact with them, asking if there was any nursing experience that they could find for me in this area. They confirmed that hospice's in South Africa accept students from abroad. The hospice I have been volunteering at for the past three weeks is a five-star COHSASA (Council for Health Services Accredited of South Africa) accredited hospice, aiming to provide palliative care of excellence to individuals and families who are affected by a life-threatening or life-limiting disease in order to enhance their quality of life.

During my time working at the hospice, I had the opportunity to work on a 12-bed ward and also within the community in various parts of South Africa, where I visited patients in their homes. I nursed patients with various different life-threatening and life-limiting diseases including HIV, Tuberculosis, and cancer. For me, experiencing a different culture of nursing and healthcare was incredibly fascinating and very eye-opening. I was at first, shocked by the poverty in South Africa, having not seen anything quite like it before. SPORTS REPORT Netball U12A&B Netball v St Georges Weybridge On Tuesday 19 of March the U12 A team played against St George’s Weybridge. As the whistle blew at the end of the first quarter, they were leading 3-1 but we bought it back in the second quarter finishing 4-3 to them. The third quarter was good as Heathfield were tight marking and getting into space at the right time and managed to draw the score 7-7.

We then upped our game and it finished in a draw 10-10. Players of the match were Meeka and Sarah.

Lacrosse Saturday 23 March – Senior Small Schools Lacrosse Tournament The senior lacrosse team played superbly, demonstrating pure team spirit and finishing with Silver medals was an outstanding achievement. The girls should be very proud of themselves!

Saturday 23 March – U13 SW Schools Tournament The U13 lacrosse team came together as a strong team, resulting in runners up of the plate competition. A great effort by all!

Saturday 23 March – U12 SW Schools Tournament The U12 lacrosse team played brilliantly on Saturday, making their way to the plate SemiFinal. The girls got stronger in each game they played. Well done girls!

Small Schools’ Lacrosse Tournament On Saturday 23 March, the first lacrosse team travelled to Rendcomb College for the Small Schools’ Tournament to play Rendcomb College second team, St. George's, Ascot, Milton Abbey, and The Royal.

Having beaten Rendcomb 9–0 the team fell behind to an early St. George’s goal which shook the team’s confidence before they pulled level in the second half. A late goal by SGA saw the team losing 1–2 which meant winning their remaining games was crucial in order to qualify for a semi-final place. Victories against Milton Abbey 5–2 and The Royal 3–2 secured a place in the semi-finals; once again to face St. George’s. With 3 minutes left the team received a mandatory yellow card which meant we had to play short for the remainder of the match and hold on to our slender one-goal lead.

St. George’s were a player up in their attacking end of the field and the girls were under enormous pressure to hold on: they did to win 6–5. In the final they lost to Rendcomb College first team 0–2, to finish as runners up winning silver medals. For me, the result is unimportant because I witnessed something far more special: a group of individuals became a team. Despite knowing what was at stake and how badly they wanted to win gold, they refused to be knocked down each time St. George's took the lead. They dug deep into their physical and mental reserves demonstrating true grit, resilience, determination and above all trust in each other to get the job done. Girls I am so proud of you all, well done!

Hockey Wednesday 20 March – Seniors v LVS A mixed team from Forms III-V enjoyed a friendly hockey game against LVS. The girls who all volunteered to play did so with beaming smiles and were excited about a new #challenge. The game was brilliant and we started up in the first quarter 2-0. LVS came back at the beginning of the second quarter and then it was 3-1 to Heathfield. The end score was 5-1 and the girls played with skill and determination.

House Swimming Overall results were announced at the end of term assembly including new record holders, well done to all who competed!

Berkeley Homes: fashioning ‘purpose’ with Heathfield School Berkeley Homes would like to congratulate all the girls who participated in Heathfield’s iconic fashion show last Thursday, 21 March. We were absolutely delighted to provide sponsorship for the event and were not disappointed by the creative talent showcased on the runway. Unique prints and innovative sculpture caught our eyes as the girls graced the catwalk, and we were blown away by the detail in the garments and accessories.

It has been several weeks since we announced our partnership with Heathfield School.

During this time, the girls have been busy attending workshops with Stephen Lisseman, designing garments, selecting fabrics, print-making, pattern cutting, photographing outfits for the ‘Look Book', drawing, painting, jewelry making, and preparing for the big day. After all of their hard work, the girls' final garments clearly showcased their individuality and passion for design. The evening was truly a celebration of both individual and collective creativity.

Now that the fashion show has drawn to a close, we thought it would be important to reflect on our ‘purpose’ for supporting such an exciting project. Through the sponsorship, we have been delighted to give back to the local area, and demonstrate our support for Ascot’s community, throughout the building of our Brompton Gardens development.

Our show homes are now open daily. Visitors can tour our three- and four-bedroom homes featuring kitchens from Charles Yorke, generously-sized living rooms, bedrooms, and landscaped gardens. Once complete, there will be 61 homes on the site, including 6 converted apartments within the historic Brackens House, once the family home of Captain William King George. Set in 19 acres of mature woodland, residents will be able to enjoy woodland walks on the doorstep of their home.

23 & 24 March – Austen Weekend The Austen weekend was the last one of the Lent term and saw many of the girls out at lacrosse on Saturday. The rest of the students were allowed out on trips to Bracknell, Ascot or Windsor with Forms I and II visiting the cinema to see either Captain Marvel or Lego Movie 2.

Sunday took on an Easter theme and, after Chapel, the girls competed in the hotly contested House Easter Egg Hunt, which was won by Somerville; well done to Sarah (Form I), Anya (Form II) and Georgia (Form III) for being the highest scoring players. In the afternoon, Heathfield hosted an Easter Carnival with games including an Easter Bunny obstacle course, a hopping race, piĂąata, and egg decorating. We also had motor race simulators, crazy golf and a bouncy castle to cap off the fun.
