We continue the busy term with our varied array of trips and outings including the girls learning how to skydive and also taking to battle at Laserquest. On World Book Day we saw their imaginations run wild with some truly amazing outfits; give our girls a challenge and they will rise to it and beyond every time!

Once again, our Open Morning saw many families visiting Heathfield; and as ever, the feedback is very positive; I always get comments regarding how confident, polite and dedicated your daughters are when touring and talking to visitors. It’s not easy to be honest, impressive and charming and your daughters get it right every time.

I am very much looking forward to seeing you at our Black Tie Dinner Fashion Show; the first of what we hope will be a successful annual event or for those who can’t make this will be able to attend the Catwalk Show on Friday – we are all eager and excited to see what our girls have worked so hard on.

As the sun is beginning to shine through, I wish you all a wonderful start to Spring.

Heathfield Fashion Show As part of the Heathfield 120-year celebrations, the Fashion Show is taking place over two evenings this year.

Our inaugural Heathfield Fashion Show and Dinner will be held in St Mary’s Theatre on Thursday 21 March at 7 pm. This new, Black-Tie event will include a champagne reception, a sumptuous four-course meal with wine, two catwalk shows and a talk by top fashion designer Stephen Lisseman.

Tickets cost £75 per person and we have just a few tickets left so please do support this fantastic event - email events@heathfieldschool.net to book your place as soon as possible.

Photography and Cultural Trip to Florence 2019 What a fabulous experience for all involved! We had great weather and blue skies without a cloud in sight so there was ample opportunity for photo-shoots across the weekend.

The visit to San Gimignano offered breath-taking views of the Tuscan countryside, and a medieval torture museum, whereas the central ‘square’ of Siena, Il Campo, gave us all a chance to rest and absorb the architecture and historical sights. The must-see points of interest within the city of Florence itself were not missed and we walked to the impressive Santa Maria Novella, onto the Ponte Vecchio and followed the elevated Medici walkways – only at ground level as the ‘normal’ Italian people would have done in the 15th century!

A highlight for all our contemporary creative and fashion-conscious girls was the visit to the Gucci museum with its collection of stunning, eclectic and sometimes outrageous outfits. The Galleria dell’Accademia houses Michaelangelo’s marble sculpture of ‘David’, set apart from other sculptures of the same subject as it is believed to be of ‘David’ before the fight with Goliath. This is such an iconic, impressive piece of work that all girls have been encouraged to include this piece of work within their coursework projects as inspiration and influence for their own images. They have also included, within their independent plans for their own images, inspiration from Botticelli’s painting, The Birth of Venus, which we viewed at the Uffizi Gallery, an extraordinary building itself built for Cosimo I de’Medici to house the magistrate offices, hence the gallery name.

However, nothing quite beats the views across Florence from an elevated position. We treated the girls to a night view of the city, focussing on the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo, that dominates the Florence horizon from the Pizzale Michaelangelo and later in the weekend bought tickets so that everyone could experience the climb of 414 steps to the top of the Campanile (Giotto’s bell tower) and look at the view of the city from the Duomo.

This was a culturally enriching trip for all involved and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Form III Barcelona Trip Form III visited Barcelona for a cross-curricular trip. We landed in glorious sunshine and the girls were able explore the coastal resort town of Lloret de Mar including a walk along the beach as the sun was setting.

Our first excursion involved some Geography at the Torres Winery where we learnt about the complicated process of viticulture and the hard work of many generations of the family to make the business a success.

We then travelled to the centre of Barcelona and visited Casa Mila, our first experience of Antoni Gaudi; the building included a wonderful roof terrace where the girls completed Art sketches of the unique chimneys and spectacular views.

The next day, we visited Gaudi’s magnum opus, Sagrada Famila, where the girls completed a Religious Studies assignment, tracking the story of Jesus’ death on the Passion Façade with all its subtle symbols. Afterwards we visited the Barcelona City History Museum where we went back in time to Roman Barcino, visiting the underground ruins and completing some Classics tasks. After some free time, the day finished with some friendly competition as we visited the local bowling alley; well done to Katrina for finishing with the highest points score.

On our last day students gathered data using tourism surveys at Plaça de Catalunya to be used in Geography lessons. The final visit of the trip was to the famous theme park Tibi Dabo including roller-coasters, log flumes and a haunted house before we returned home to Ascot.

Form I Geography/Science Trip to Rushall Farm Form I set off on Tuesday 26 February to visit Rushall Farm near Bradfield in Berkshire.

After a talk about health and safety the groups set off to investigate environmental factors which affect farming and took measurements of light, moisture and the pH of the soils in three different locations.

Pupils were shown how Rushall Farm is a mixed organic farm, where they grow cereal crops and sell sheep and cattle. Pupils learned about inputs, processes and outputs into the farm and about how little labour is required and the use of machinery. We were also shown how the farm has diversified into other activities such as school visits and as a venue for weddings.

A geographical highlight was the Chalk Pit with its geological cross section dating back 87 million years. However, the highlight of the trip for the pupils was the time spent in the barn enjoying holding the new arrivals of lambs and meeting the litter of eight piglets.

Form I are now writing up their notes and their data in the classroom as an independent project which will be completed by the end of term.

Stephen Lisseman, former Creative Director at Gucci and Karl Lagerfeld, shares industry experience with Heathfield Students.

Both Art and non-Art students enjoyed a lunchtime lecture from Stephen in which he deconstructed his approach to presenting a ‘pitch’ for a role at a leading Haute Couture house. Stephen discussed his inspiration, mood boards and design work, and impressed the importance of understanding a brand. As preparations gather momentum for the Fashion Shows on 21-22 March, students have had the opportunity to explore a range of responsibilities within the fashion industry.

Chemistry Trip The VIth form Chemistry students went to Bombay Sapphire Distillery to see the distillation process for making gin. The students saw industrial size stills and examined chemistry techniques outside of a practical setting. They were also able to examine the botanicals used in the vapour infusion process that is a unique method for Bombay spirits.

World Book Day We held a number of events to celebrate World Book Day including a Book Quiz entitled Guess the Teachers’ Favourite Book and a book cover competition, and the overall winner was Honor (Form I) and two runners up Eva (Form II) and Olivia (Form I). A Book Triathlon was also held which included a session of book charades and a complete the book quote from three possible answers. Well done to de Valois House for winning the Triathlon.

The ever-popular dress up as your favourite book character saw some amazing creations.

The style of Brompton Gardens fits perfectly into the backdrop of Ascot and the surrounding areas. Ascot Racecourse, which was originally founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, is a prime example. The racecourse has served generations of the community and as we have done at Brompton Gardens, it continues to look back to the past to inform its future role. For example, last year, a war horse memorial was unveiled to recognise the part that animals played in World War One. As you might remember from our last newsletter contribution, at Brompton Gardens, we have remembered former resident Captain William King George’s love of horses and created an area that references traditional stable courtyard farms, while the adjacent buildings have design cues from the former smithy that once made horseshoes there. Throughout the development we have also used names connected with the Captain and his family to honour the memory of a young man who gave his life for his country. Our main priority has been to return the historic Brackens House to its former glory, and to sensitively develop a new community on the 19-acre estate.

Brompton Gardens is being built in a tasteful and sympathetically historic style and is now home to a smart collection of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, and three-, four- and five- bedroom family homes that offer the latest trends in contemporary living.

Open Morning On Saturday 9 March we held our must successful Lent Term Open Morning ever! 60 families made their way to Heathfield and the feedback we have had from these visitors has been incredibly positive.

The event started with talks in the Theatre by Mrs Gardiner Legge and Mr Mitchell, Director of Studies, followed by Hibah and Isabel (Form I) and Sophia, Head Girl (LVI), giving the audience a fantastic insight into life at Heathfield and their own personal experiences.

Families were then given a tour around the school by our pupils and they were unanimous in the praise of their tour guides. Well done girls and a very big thank you.

Polo Heathfield v Eton On Thursday 28 March Heathfield Diamonds, Kiki (Form V), Minty (Form V) and Victoria (LVI) won 11-9 against Eton in their warm up for the SUPA Senior Nationals. Heathfield Rubies, Helena (LVI), Rosaleen (Form II) and Sibylla (Form IV) played well in their first outing as a team. Brother and sister took part in this inaugural match.

SUPA Senior Nationals The Heathfield Diamonds, Kiki (Form V), Minty (Form V) and Victoria (UVI) were at Rugby polo arena on Sunday 3 March to take part in the SUPA Seniors National Arena Polo Championships.

With 38 teams entered and constant play in two arenas, it was a most important yet tiring day for our outstanding Heathfield players.64 x 7-minute chukkas were played by the teams during the day, that's a lot of polo and a lot of work for the mammoth team of people involved in such an epic polo tournament.

Our girls were outstanding, playing against Millfield, Harrow, Milton Abbey, and Wellington College teams. After a penalty shoot-out which we won, Heathfield Diamonds were placed 5th in their Upper Intermediate Division of 9 teams.

Thank you to our supporters and especially ex England player Will Lucas who gave valuable advice and support at Rugby.

SUPA Girls National Arena Championships Despite challenging weather conditions of gale force winds and hailstone showers, 11 Heathfield polo players took part in the SUPA Girls National Arena Championships on Sunday 10 March. In the fantastic surroundings of the Black Bears Polo Club all players gave a great display of team play and gamesmanship. Heathfield Diamonds came second in the Open division. Well done Heathfield polo players. Thank you for all the wonderful support from parents at Black Bears.

Lynn Painter-Stainer's Prize We are delighted that Heathfield Art & Design teacher Juliette Losq’s painting Dark Water has been shortlisted for this year's Lynn Painter-Stainer's Prize.

Created in 2005 by The Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and The Lynn Foundation, the competition champions the skill of draughtsmanship and representational painting. The exhibition aims to reflect the breadth of approaches and materials from across the artistic spectrum.

Juliette’s work will be on display at The Mall Galleries, SW1Y 5BD from 5 to 17 March 2019.

Sports Report Monday 25 February – U12A SE Berks Netball Tournament The girls played really well, winning three of their pool games, but unfortunately just missing a place in the semi-final. We then went on to play for 5/6 play off and won against the Abbey resulting in 5th place.

POM goes to Meeka (Form I).

Tuesday 26 February – U13 Ascot Schools Netball Tournament It was tough competition at the tournament; we won two of our pool games but unfortunately did not make the final. The girls played really well and despite a loss in our first game the girls did well to pull back and work as a team, great effort #team Tuesday 5 March – U12 Ascot Schools Tournament U12A Our A team showed fantastic determination, passion and positivity on Tuesday. Miss Willimott knew we had stiff competition in Marist A so set a realistic goal of Silver medals.

The girls played extremely well, only losing to Marist A by one goal and walked away with Silver medals around their necks. Miss Willimott was bursting with pride and the talent on show. Well done girls! POM: Sarah (Form I) U12B The B team had a fantastic tournament, winning three of their games. Having not had much practice as a team, they played brilliantly and worked well together. Our greatest achievement was winning 4-0 against LVS B team. Well done to all the girls involved, particularly POMs: Mia, Honor and Amelia (Form I).

Lacrosse Saturday 1 – Wednesday 6 March – National Schools Lacrosse Seniors On the Saturday our team played strongly against LEH, Westonbirt, Bolton, Canford, St James and St George’s Ascot, we came 3rd in our pool meaning we went through to Division One, which is a Heathfield first. On Sunday we were against St Albans, Stowe and St Barts, which then lead us into the knockout round unfortunately being knocked out by Godolphin, our team were at 0-0 at half term until losing 3-0, but we held up a good fight. Alex (UVI) and the defence defending strongly throughout the two days and the attack working together and scoring many goals, although we were knocked out it was a successful weekend. Written by Aisha (LVI) U15 The under 15s have had a good season and have been working towards nationals for the last 6 weeks. Focusing on our attacking partnerships and staying strong in defence, the girls showed that our hard work has paid off. Winning against Queen Margaret's and drawing 22 against Rencombe after play had been abandoned and we had tracked down our tent that had blown away we started again to come back to win. The team pulled together in each match regardless of the score and weather conditions and had some real fun in their last tournament as a U15 team. The girls should be proud of themselves as they worked incredibly hard and showed some real potential on the pitch in some tough circumstances. Special mention to Joy (Form II) who played with teams two years above.

U14 The U14s mixed team of U13 and U14 players played really well and came together as a team on Tuesday. Considering they do not regularly compete as a team together, they displayed great determination and resilience, not giving up even when they were a few goals down. Ella (Form III) demonstrated fantastic leadership skills and positivity throughout the day as Captain. The whole team showed great potential and I look forward to seeing them continue to develop next year.

Seacole Weekend 2 – 3 March If you are choosing a theme on which to base weekend activities, why not the 1980’s!! As

neon was quite significant in the 1980’s, we did base a few activities around the use of glow sticks! This first activity was an exercise/dance session in the dark with glow sticks and the second, an evening karaoke! We also ran fluorescent photography sessions in which girls made up their, or others, faces with fluorescent body paint.

Baking is always a popular activity with the girls at the weekend and the chocolate brownies and Malteser fridge cake certainly did not last long! At times during the afternoon, girls had signed up to be made over, 1980’s style. There was lots of coloured eyeshadow being applied, glitter, hair being crimped and put into side ponytails, and discussions about clothes in the 1980’s.

On Sunday, after chapel, the House Captains hosted Space Hopper races and Hula Hoop competitions and after lunch, there was an 80’s movie marathon watching Mannequin and Labyrinth.

However, the big event of the Seacole weekend was the trip to IFly indoor skydiving. The girls had an amazing time in their 1-to-1 instructor sessions flying in the vertical wind tunnel. It was such a popular trip, we will definitely be visiting again.

Reports received were that the group were extremely talented and showed huge potential in ‘screaming’. To soothe voice boxes and recuperate from the excitement, the group enjoyed a leisurely lunch in Wagamamas restaurant before returning to school.

Bronte House (Form I to III) opted for Lazerquest on Saturday afternoon. Kitted up in dark clothes to avoid being zapped by the lazers, the group were divided into two teams to battle it out in the maze. The Blue team were crowned victorious with Adriana achieving the highest score.

On Saturday evening the LVI hosted a disco to entertain all those in school.

On Sunday all girls enjoyed a welcome lie in, followed by a sumptuous brunch at 10:30.

Following this, students headed off to the Copper Horse in the Windsor Great Park and trekked the Long Walk to their final destination of Windsor Castle. Despite the blustery conditions and a hail storm, the girls dug deep and were treated to well-deserved afternoon tea in Windsor.

The weekend concluded with an evening Chapel service. Thank you to Birdie (Form I) and Iris (Form I) for giving the prayers and Adriana (Form II) and Clemmie (Form II) for the readings.
