It was very moving to sit in the chapel with the candle burning over the memorial plaque on Founder’s Day and to think of Eleanor Beatrice Wyatt starting out Heathfield in 1899.

Founder’s Day really did reflect all that we love about the school with the traditional service in our Chapel, our love of adventure, passion, and perseverance with a talk to the girls by Mandy Hickson, RAF pilot and then a superb celebration in the evening of the musical and dramatic talent in the school. The atmosphere in the theatre was magical and so warm and embracing; it was an absolute privilege.

A whole range of wonderful events beckon after Half Term to celebrate our 120th year and I look forward to seeing you in school for them. Before that though, I wish you a lovely restful and happy half term with your daughters.

Heathfield Fashion Show As part of the 120-year celebration of Heathfield the Fashion Show which will be taking place over two evenings this year.

Our inaugural Heathfield Fashion Show and Dinner will be held in St Mary’s Theatre on Thursday 21 March at 7 pm. This new, Black-Tie event will include a champagne reception, a sumptuous four-course meal with wine, two catwalk shows and a talk by top fashion designer Stephen Lisseman.

Tickets cost £75 per person and will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served basis’. We are anticipating that tickets will sell quickly so please email events@heathfieldschool.net to book your places as soon as possible.

If, however, you are unable to join us on Thursday, there will be another opportunity to see the main catwalk show on the evening of Friday 22 March. Berkeley Homes: ‘Repurposing’ history at Brompton Gardens Since announcing our support of the upcoming fashion show in the last newsletter, we thought that it would be great to explore more about Berkeley Homes’ ‘purpose’ in this edition and what exactly we have done to restore some modern day ‘purpose’ to our Brompton Gardens development, which sits across the road from Heathfield.

At Berkeley Homes, our key ‘purpose’ is to build exceptional places for people to live and strong communities. Our main priority in Ascot has been to return the historic Brackens House, which has a fascinating family history at its heart to its former glory, and to sensitively develop a new community on the 19-acre estate.

For those with a particular interest in history…the elegant red brick home was built in the 1880s for the King George family. Their eldest son William grew up there and was a keen horseman, keeping the local blacksmiths in business, before being commissioned into the 3rd Battalion, the Gloucestershire Regiment as a Second Lieutenant in 1905.

He was promoted to Captain five years later in 1910, married his sweetheart Noelle Evelyn Campbell Stewart the same year, returning home to live with his parents at Bracken House.

Sadly their happiness was to be short-lived as shortly after WW1 broke out, William led his regiment to France on 3rd January 1915 and was killed in action just 22 days later.

The graceful family home then became fragmented into a series of office buildings, with functional extensions and outbuildings spoiling its graceful lines, which is when we stepped in. We were fascinated by the story of Captain William King George and his family and decided that this would be the inspiration behind the way we developed the site.

Remembering his love of horses, we have created an area that references traditional stable courtyard farms, while the adjacent buildings take design cues from the former smithy that once made horseshoes there. Throughout the development we will be using names connected with the Captain and his family to honour the memory of a young man who gave his life for his country.

While the main house is being restored and divided into spacious apartments, the new homes throughout the grounds have also been designed using traditional proportions and details of Victorian and Edwardian housing, including dormers, chimneys and bay windows, reflecting the style and variety of traditional homes in the Ascot area. The larger properties are set among the existing mature trees to give a “woodland villa” effect, which is proving particularly popular with buyers attracted by the sense of history and the countryside feel of the development. https://mailchi.mp/c1a87e6410a3/bfi797nxwa-1588153?e=32469b3582

GCSE & A Level Spanish Theatre Trip Girls studying Spanish GCSE and A level went to London on Monday 4 February to the theatre to watch the play: La Casa de Bernarda Alba written by Federico García Lorca (1898-1936). This was a great opportunity for A Level students in particular, as it is the same literature book they are studying in preparation for their examination.

Heathfield students participated in a question and answer session in which, they had the opportunity to discuss the play with the director and the Professor of Hispanic Studies from Durham University. All the girls enjoyed the play and they showed great interest.

Mandy dreamt about becoming a RAF jet pilot since the age of thirteen. In an honest and humorous manner, she described the obstacles that she faced to realise her dream to become a fighter jet pilot. She shared with the students and staff the attitudes and behaviours she has adopted in order to succeed. These include the positive impact that a team can make, self-belief and the importance of trying one’s best, as well as leading by example.

So what should we do to follow Mandy’s example? To use Mandy’s final words, we need to Dream it, Believe it, Do it.

St Blaise Challenge St Blaise, by tradition, is the Patron Saint of Throats! The candles blessed on the feast of Candlemas (February 2) are used on the Saint’s feast day, February 3, to bless the throats of those who wish to ward off infection. Appropriate then, that on St Blaise’s Day (or as near as we can get) just after Founders Day – coincidentally the Feast of Candlemas – the throats of the girls are exercised in cheering on a team from each of their houses. This year a tug of war which saw the four houses in determined competition and full-throated support.

Founder's Day Music Concert Students, parents, and staff were treated to an array of musical talent from current Heathfield students and staff as well as Heathfield Old Girls to celebrate Founder's Day. The Junior Choir sang with Emma (LVI) and also alongside old girl Emily Shepherd.

Outstanding vocal performances were given in duets from Form II with Isabella and Sonya then Clemmie and Isabella.

Francesca, Lexi, and Scarlett (Form IV) sang I Will Survive followed by a stunning version of There’s a Fine, Fine Line by Sophie (Form V).

Lower Sixth Libby and Tansy performed a duet and later were joined by Flavia, Hattie, and Sophia to perform an entertaining Spice Girls routine. The Senior Choir closed the show with a lively rendition of Colour my World.

Instrumental support to artists was given by Alisa (Form II) on the ukulele, Adriana (Form II) on piano, Rosaleen (Form II) with the violin. The Heathfield Band performed as well as the Heathfield Orchestra. Old girls Kathryn MacLellan performed an Oboe Concerto and Thea-Rose Mumford a Cello Concerto.

A surprise act from Signorina Chiara-Lasagne Pozzi who had a startling resemblance to Miss Clare Wells, Head of Expressive Arts Faculty & Subject Leader Science, alongside Signora Misterioso who resembled Mrs Lesley Worrall, Head of Lower School was rapturously well-received. A comedic musical act from Housemistresses Janet and Su, Fr David and the Music Department’s amazing Mrs Julie Dance and Miss Su Mei Kong had all the audience laughing.

Heathfield Guest Speaker - Dr Ann Schmiedekamp, Professor of Physics, Penn State University We welcomed Dr Ann Schmiedekamp to Heathfield on Thursday 14 February. Dr Ann is a Professor of Physics at Penn State University and an Ambassador for the NASA Solar Systems Program. She teaches introductory astronomy courses and astrobiology. Dr Ann is also the mother of Mrs Briana Clench, Teacher in Charge of Chemistry, Highly Able/Scholarship Coordinator.

Dr Ann joined lessons and gave a Science Workshop including climate change experiments with Form IV. She also enjoyed afternoon tea whilst talking to groups of girls about current and future missions of NASA.

Subscribe flew past PastUltima Issues Thule in the early hours of New Year's Day, reaching the most distant Translate target in history – 4 billion miles from the Sun. Heathfield students, staff and families learned how this NASA mission has begun a new era of exploration in this distant region of space. Reaching the Ultima Thule is an incredible achievement and could hold keys to understanding the origins of the solar system.

Sixth Form Guest Speaker Mr Anshul Raja, author of How to Ace your A levels came to talk to the Sixth Form. He discussed revision techniques with the Upper Sixth and how gamifying revision can provide encouragement to keep revising. The Lower Sixth received the first in a series of talks where Anshul set them the challenge of trying his techniques for a one month period. Lower Sixth talks continue over the course of the rest of the term and it will be interesting to see how they respond. Watch this space!

ARTiculation Prize – Roche Court Educational Trust Tansy (LVI) spoke on Waterhouse’s Hylas and the Nymphs in the regional heats of ARTiculation. Tansy did incredibly well, starting off the afternoon as the first speaker; very nerve-wracking!

Olivia Warham MBE congratulated all the speakers on the absolutely amazing standard of presentations, stating how difficult it had been to select one speaker to go forward.

In particular, Olivia Warham praised Tansy for her skilled use of references, an in-depth look and the truly significant amount of edifying content.

We all hope that Tansy is feeling very proud of her amazing achievement.

Memorial Service for Laura Tatham The unexpected loss of a much loved Heathfield Old Girl last year prompted a request for a service of remembrance to be held in the Chapel of the Ascension in her memory.

On Wednesday 13 February we were delighted to hold a Memorial Service for Old Girl, Laura Tatham (Heathfield 1977-1983).

Fr David welcomed everyone to Chapel and led the service. Laura’s friends and family took the readings and prayers and the Top 12 sang Panis Angelicus and The Lord Bless you and Keep you. Sophia and Tansy (LVI) made this poignant service complete with a duet of Pie Jesus.

It was a delightful afternoon of memories and laughter and during a delicious tea, friends, family, and those staff who had known Laura had time to remember her and their time at Heathfield.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make this such a special afternoon for so many of our old girls.

Netball Heathfield v St Marys, Ascot U12A 7-7 draw U12B 6-5 win U13 18-10 lost U14 9-7 win U15 Ascot Schools Netball Tournament First match played against the Marist, slow start – lost 5-4, then played against St George’s won 6-2 and final game against St Marys won 4-1. Resulting in Silver medals.

Congratulations girls! Well done to all girls who took part, particularly Cesca(Form IV) who was awarded Player of the Tournament.

Lacrosse Berkshire School Lacrosse at Queen Anne’s The U12s played really well at their first major tournament. The girls worked hard and displayed great teamwork both on and off the pitch. Well done girls!

U13 - Lost to both Queen Anne's and Downe House, however, sheer determination and teamwork in defence and some great goal saves by Joy. Last match of the tournament and the team stepped up to win 3 - 2 against St Barts.

The U14s really pulled together in the Berkshire tournament, they played as a team and really listened to each other on the pitch. The girls lost their first three 3 matches, Isabelle and Katrina (Form III) used their speed and agility around the defenders to ensure we had a number of goals on the score sheet. In our final match, the girls played Queen Anne's 2nd team and they fought till the bitter end. Ella (Form III) led the girls with a positive attitude and they worked incredibly hard. The team finished with a well-deserved draw 2-2 with a nail-biting finish, unfortunately, we could not get the last goal in. Well done to all girls that played and a special mention to Teale (Form III) who played her first game in goal against some tough opposition.

Somerville Weekend 9 – 10 February On Saturday morning the House Lacrosse Competition was the first activity of the weekend. Seacole dominated their games but all the other Houses were evenly matched and there were plenty of examples of good play for the House Captains to cheer. The Form I students came straight off the lacrosse field to take part in a Scottish Country dancing lesson with Miss Wells.

After lunch, origami expert Mark Bolitho ran workshops for Form I and II. He taught the girls and staff to fold jumping frogs, flying cranes, Japanese hats and paper bags that made a bang when cracked like a whip.

Meanwhile, the Bronte House common room was transformed into a beauty spa for the afternoon as Form III prepared for their social with Harrow that evening. By supper time Form I and II were at Sunningdale Prep for their social and Form III were entertaining Harrow at Heathfield. Both socials involved supper and disco and in addition, Sunningdale organised Scottish reeling.

On Sunday morning after brunch Form I and II enjoyed two different workshops. In the first workshop, they made cards and small gifts to give on Valentine’s Day. In the second they made and decorated Love Bugs. In the afternoon Forms III, IV and V went to the cinema or spent free time in Bracknell Town centre.

On Sunday evening Lower Sixth were taken out for supper to an Indian Restaurant. The staff wanted to acknowledge Lower Sixth leadership roles within school. St Nicholas’ Stalls, school assemblies, inter-house competitions, and many other activities are led and energised by the Lower Sixth Prefects.
