It was terrific to see Dame Vivien Duffield return to Heathfield to share her message of grit, determination and hard work being the key to success, and to see it continue to echo in the achievements of the last two weeks. Whether on the lacrosse pitch, in the classroom or on the stage Heathfield girls continue to make an impression wherever they are. It’s been a very frosty few days and it was great to see everyone out in the snow having fun. After all, that’s what a great childhood is all about.

I wish you all a great two weeks as we head towards Half term and hope you see you in school soon.

Heathfield welcomed Dame Vivien Duffield an old Heathfield girl and philanthropist along with 8 other old Heathfield girls. Dame Vivien is the Chair of the Clore Duffield Foundation and has given away over ÂŁ176 million pounds through her various works, donating to places such as The Royal Opera House, South Bank Centre and The Natural History Museum.

Her charitable work has been formally acknowledged by many institutions, both in the UK and in Israel. In February 2013 she was reported as being one of the 100 most powerful women in the UK by Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4.

Dame Vivien talked about her life and career. After Heathfield, she gained a place at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, and because of her 'fine achievement', all Heathfield girls were awarded a half-day holiday to celebrate.

Dame Vivien spoke about the future and what future generations might possibly experience in terms of the new technology that is in the making and how it could affect them. She explained why the creative arts are so important, and the reasons why she values them and spends so much energy, time and money to make sure that all generations are able to enjoy, learn and access the creative arts.

Answering many questions from the audience Dame Vivien talked about how important it is to do what you love and feel passionate about. The girls were left very inspired and we all felt honoured to have Dame Vivien back at Heathfield.

Berkeley Homes: restoring ‘purpose’ at Brompton Gardens, Ascot Berkeley Homes is delighted to announce its partnership with Heathfield School. We will be supporting the school by sponsoring the upcoming Fashion Show on March 21 and 22, we are extremely excited about this, knowing what an iconic event it always is for the school and wider Ascot community. The theme of this year’s show is Purpose so we thought that it would be pertinent to explain a little bit more about our ‘purpose’ for doing this…

We are pleased that we can give something back to the local area, and demonstrate our support of the Ascot community, as I’m sure most of you are aware – we are currently building a development of new homes at Brompton Gardens, which is situated just opposite Heathfield on London Road.

The first completions at Brompton Gardens are this Spring and with a new 3 bedroom show home unveiling Saturday 9 February, we are excited at how the development is taking shape. Once complete, there will be 61 new and converted homes – 55 brand new properties and 6 apartments within the 134-year-old Brackens House that was once the family home of Captain William King George. We will go into more detail on the history of the development in the next newsletter.

Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) Young Musician Competition This year the heats of the annual RIBI Young Musician of the Year Competition were held at Licenced Victuallers School in Ascot on a bitterly cold January evening. Heathfield entered two competitors in the vocal category and both girls came top of their class, with Tansy (LVI) winning first place and runner-up was Lulu (Form III).

Geoff Horton, Chief adjudicator commended Tansy on her engaging personality and Lulu on the potential of her voice. Both girls now go through to the District round at St Joseph’s College in Reading on March 17.

National Citizen Service On Tuesday 29 January Jess and Alex from NCS came to Heathfield to run a PSHE session with girls from Form V and LVI. The girls participated in a lively and engaging way, showing a strong grasp of current social and political topics. Heathfield girls generally have strong opinions but they also demonstrated the importance of listening to people with different opinions too.

“Firstly, Jess and Alex asked us to stand up and respond to a series of questions about current social and political topics. We were asked to position ourselves in the room to represent our opinion about each topic; with one side of the room being “strongly agree” whilst the other side represented “strongly disagree” and people standing in the middle showed the spectrum of “in-between” opinions. Jess and Alex asked people standing in different parts of the room to explain why they had chosen to stand there.

Cambridge University English Examination Success Heathfield Schools’ international students all take extra English Language courses to enhance their academic prospects. Final year students Frida, Marina, Phoebe, and Tatiana passed their exams in academic skills for The International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Torry (UVI) gained a very high pass in her examinations (7.5+). In addition, this term, Juana (Form III) attained a Merit grade for her Upper-Intermediate Certificate assessment while Maya Schaefer (Form IV) scored an A-average across her four papers. Yet, the greatest commendation goes to Heathfield’s International Prefect, Flavia (LVI) as well as Vasilisa (LVI) who are both awarded The Certificate in Advanced English from The University of Cambridge.

Maria (LVI) also completed this examination and secured distinctions across all five papers resulting in proficiency status—the highest possible level in English ability from the university’s examination board. Maria’s high grade from her five hour-long examinations tested language skills including Reading Analysis, Written Composition, Spoken Fluency, Listening Comprehension and her accuracy of Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary. The Advanced Certificate provides rigorous evidence for native English fluency. Accepted internationally at universities and higher education institutions, Maria’s exceptional qualification is equivalent to a full pass at extension AS-level English Language.

U12: Olivia first in IM taking 3 seconds off her own school record and first in Fly also taking 30 seconds off her own school record. Birdie – Second in IM heat gaining a PB. Allegra – Placed 1st in Backstroke & Front crawl. Johanna – 3rd in Breaststroke. U12 Medley Team & Free Relay Teams – Allegra, Johanna, Laura, and Olivia placed second in the Medley Relay and First place in the free relay – set two new school records. U12A Team placed first at the Ascot Schools’ Gala out of eight teams. Amazing achievement!!

DeValois Weekend 2 – 3 February With the sports fields covered in snow and matches cancelled, students opted to take part in a combination of alternative activities for the morning. Pancakes topped with apple and icing sugar where stacked high in the cookery hut, stunning gold, and red Chinese lanterns were produced alongside origami style fortune cookies in the Art room. While in the sports hall, with music at its loudest, girls took part in spinning and, next door, in the dance studio, they performed a catchy routine.

Following lunch, all girls and Bert the dog wrapped up with winter layers to walk around Englemere Pond. With the snow still intact and the frozen pond, girls were able to capture some stunning and creative photos.

That evening everyone was treated to a sumptuous Chinese Banquet in the dining room and then headed to the Theatre for a duvet and pajamas night watching Wild Child in the Theatre. They were able to capture the inspiration de Valois Captains have taken for their pre-competition Haka.

In Chapel, we were treated to readings by Birdie (Form I) and Isis (Form II) and the prayers were given by Ella (Form III) and Teale (Form III).

The girls departed to the Ice Rink at The Guildford Spectrum on Sunday for an afternoon of ice skating. Lower school students hosted Papplewick boys for an afternoon pool party, using the large inflatable balls, and games, including dodgeball at the sports hall, followed by a delicious afternoon tea.
