I hope you all had a restful and peaceful holiday and your 2019 has started positively.

Just one of the many things I love about Heathfield is the unpredictability of every day; this week alone I have viewed presentations for ARTiculation, where Tansy will now go on to perform at the South East Regional Final in Wiltshire in February; heard the beautiful singing visitor, Lottie Day perform at our Music Concert and, despite the bitter, dreary January weather, observed the true grit of our girls as they battled it out on the Lacrosse field on Saturday morning. With House trips to restaurants, Netball at the Copper Box and the magical Harry Potter Studio Tour there is always something for everyone.

I am very much looking forward to our forthcoming talks, starting with Dame Vivien Duffield tonight and I do hope to see some of you there.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 89

Extended Project Qualification On 8 January students from Lower Sixth went to Royal Holloway University library to continue with their research for their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) projects. The girls learned about using a university library and searching for material. One of the librarians kindly taught them about referencing which they can then apply to their EPQs. The girls then had the opportunity to spend the rest of the day researching around their questions. It was a very productive afternoon.

House Music Competition The Heathfield House Music Competition took place on Sunday 13 January after just one week back of the Lent Term. The girls showcased an amazing array of both vocal and instrumental talent. There were some outstanding performances from Thea (Form III), who won the Junior category for Somerville, Frankie (Form III) who won the Intermediate category for Seacole, Flavia and Vas (LVI) jointly won the Advanced category for Austen and Somerville.

Austen won the Ensemble category with a confident and energetic performance of Riptide

by Vance Joy, while Somerville won the House Song category with a very strong performance of Don’t Stop Believing which included some witty lyrics and well-planned choreography.

Adjudicators, Dr Henry Stobart from Royal Holloway, University of London and Mr Simon Cook from the ACS School in Cobham were very complimentary about the well-rehearsed items and were delighted to award the House Music cup to Somerville.

The final results were: 1st with 84 points - Somerville 2nd with 79 points - Seacole 3rd with 76 points - Austin 4th with 70 points - de Valois Mrs Julie Dance, Director of Music

ARTiculation The ARTiculation Prize has been designed to give young people a forum in which they are able to express their ideas on art. ARTiculation gives opportunities for young people to gain work experience in arts organisations and to talk to professionals about career pathways.

Students use ARTicualtion to support their A Levels, Personal Statements, CV, EPQ Awards, Arts Awards and Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The ARTiculation heat at Heathfield was adjudicated by Alan Kluckow, whose fine art gallery in Sunningdale promotes contemporary British and international artists. Three Lower Sixth History of Art students entered the competition and spoke about their chosen art: Tansy: J W Waterhouse’s Hylas and the Nymphs 1896 Harriet: Alexander Calder Lobster Trap and Fish Tail 1939 Amber: Tony Cragg Group 2012 Congratulations to Tansy who will now be speaking at the South East Regional Final at New Art Centre, Roche Court, East Winterslow on Tuesday 12 February.

and enjoyed an evening out as their reward. Somerville girls from Form I to Upper Sixth travelled to Wagamama in Bracknell for a fun supper.

National Citizen Service Tegan and Alex from the National Citizen Service (NCS) came to Heathfield to invite Form V and Lower Sixth students to participate in a three-week summer project. They discussed with the girls what NCS has to offer them, both in terms of personal and social development and as a valuable contribution to their CVs and Personal Statements.

NCS is a government-backed programme designed to enrich, challenge and empower all young people. Young people who take part have an Adventure Week staying in an outdoor activity centre, a Discovery Week in university accommodation learning essential life skills and an Action Week devising a social action project in the local community. The most that young people are asked to pay for the course is ÂŁ50.

Guest Music Concert – Lottie Day On Friday 18 January Soprano singer Lottie Day performed for the girls at St Mary’s Theatre. Lottie began singing with Farnham Youth Choir and won the Hart Young Singer’s intermediate prize. Lottie went on to study at the Junior Royal Academy of music. She is now a Vocal Scholar of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

After the performance, the girls enjoyed meeting Lottie and talking to her about her career choice.

Happy Boarders What a great first fortnight back! Brontë House has been a hive of activity and Miss Sutton, Su and the rest of the team have been great at supporting the girls in Forms I to III get back into the swing of things. Brontë House started the week organising their rooms and lots of photos were put up and areas personalised.

Everyone is enjoying the new activities in the evenings. Brontë House had a speed dating evening telling each other about their Christmas in 15 seconds; then onto dodgeball bench-ball which always brings out the competitive side of the girls! Later in the week Forms I, II and III headed to Food Technology and made Oreo truffles, which were a complete and utter favourite with everyone.

The other year groups have all returned in good spirits and settled straight back into some serious work. The Lower Sixth, in particular, has been fantastic this term. Not only have they continued to be a warm, welcoming year group, but they managed to organise an amazing House Music competition ready for last weekend. Well done Lower Sixth!

We have two new girls joining us this term, Lottie in Lower Sixth and Julia in Form I. They have both been made very welcome by staff and pupils and have settled in well, making lots of new friends.

We have just had a very exciting weekend with a trip to Harry Potter studios, going to watch the England netball team playing and the Form V Formal Dinner with Harrow, Form I birthday celebrations plus a whole host of other fun activities as well.

International Netball at The Copper Box We had an amazing time the Copper Box, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Saturday 19th January 2019. Both matches, Australia v New Zealand and England v South Africa, were intense and exciting, even though England just missed out on the win. It was a great opportunity for the girls to experience live international sport. We look forward to supporting England in the Netball World Cup in Liverpool 2019.

NSEA County Qualifiers, Show Jumping Calia (Form IV) and Laura (Form I) competed in the NSEA County Qualifiers at the Berkshire College of Agriculture in Maidenhead on Sunday 20 January.

This was Calia's first outing on her new pony Sonic and he certainly lived up to his name!

They competed in the 90cm class with only 4 faults in this highly competitive class.

In the following 1m class, Calia and Sonic covered the ground at great speed and with a welldeserved clear round were placed 5th in a class of 65 competitors. This gave her the title of runner up in the Berkshire County Championships in the 1m division.

her well above many of the other competitors who were both older and on bigger horses.

Another great combination who jump amazingly quick rounds together, Laura and Oisin headed out once more to compete in the huge 1.10m course. What a super combination they are, and certainly one to watch out for this season.

Sports Report My New Year’s resolution is to #trysomethingnew. Already this term we have played our first Hockey match played Badminton in the dark! Some girls have represented age groups 2 or 3 years up and I lasted 15 days without chocolate! Well done to all the girls committing to their new year’s resolutions, attending all practices and fixtures. Keep up the good work!

Tuesday 15 January – U14 Netball Tournament The U14 netball team arrived expecting to play in the plate competition and arrived confident enough to help another school out, ending up playing in the cup. It was a super team effort and all girls involved should be very proud of themselves. Miss Willimott highlighted a few areas to improve so we know to come back fighting for our next match against St Georges, Ascot. Well done girls!

Hockey Thursday 17 January – Senior Hockey v LVS Our brand new Hockey team played against LVS in a friendly match on Thursday afternoon.

A huge thank you to LVS as they were understanding and supportive of our developing skills. Great fun was had my all!

for both netball and music competitions. The weather on Saturday morning was crisp and bright as the intermediate and senior aged girls fought fiercely for hard-earned house points on the netball courts.

The rest of the weekend was given over to House Music as the Lower Sixth drilled their teams rigorously, making use of the dance studio, sports hall, assembly hall, and theatre to practise original choreography and lyrics. A vast array of instruments including the cello, violin, piano, tambourine, and even the triangle were played. An exhausted group of girls were given the night to relax, play games and watch movies.

On Sunday, the school came together for Chapel before resuming their House rehearsals with each group being given the chance to practise in the theatre with full tech. The competition itself was a great display of talent and teamwork; well done especially to the House Captains for organizing their Houses so well in just 48 hours.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 89

The weekend went well, with highlights of the Harry Potter Studio Tour on Sunday and the Form V Dinner with Harrow on Saturday evening.

The Form V girls decorated the hall beautifully with lanterns and lights and had a thoroughly enjoyable time dancing the night away. Forms I, II and III enjoyed an afternoon baking Toffee Popcorn Bark and an even better time eating it afterward. Form IV and LVI went to the cinema and then ate supper at the Lexicon on Saturday evening.

On Sunday there were trips to Camberley and the Lexicon for those who did not participate in the Studio Tour and to finish the weekend activities, all attended Chapel Sunday evening.
