As winter draws in we have had a busy few weeks with trips, sporting events and a packed weekend of activities ranging from Bake-Off Competitions in school to Treasure Hunts in Windsor and everything in between!

With trips ranging from Classics and Latin in London to the Form I girls bonding further on their trip to the New Forest and a Form III trip to Ypres to the Battlefields. I received a letter this week from the Tour Guide in Belgium who commended the girls and our staff not only on their impeccable behaviour but their enthusiasm, knowledge and understanding of the subject.

Thank you to those who managed to attend our Sixth Form Open Evening; this was a huge success with families able to talk to teachers and discuss their subjects over supper.

I wish you all a relaxing exeat this weekend and hope you enjoy the autumnal sunshine.

I Geography Subscribe FormPast Issues Field Trip

Form I’s trip to the New Forest was to introduce our newest students to the delights of viewing the world through the eyes of a geographer and to give them the opportunity to work together. With the September sunshine definitely on our side, we set off early to reach our first stop of Beaulieu. Pupils drew a field sketch of part of the Beaulieu River which has been dammed to create the picturesque Mill Pond, watched closely by the local ponies.

From there we conducted traffic surveys of the surrounding roads, taking care to consider the risks first, and then we analysed and mapped the High Street to consider (later in the classroom) who the main target market is for the shops.

Our second stop was a lunch break at Beaulieu Road, the site of a railway station and the Sales Yard where the commoners can sell ponies. In the afternoon we visited Lyndhurst where the girls were able to visit the ancient Verderers’ Court and listen to a talk about the ownership of the land, its wildlife and its history. It is one the oldest areas of natural woodland in the country and one of the newest National Parks. This was followed by a short visit to the museum and the shop before the journey home.

Form I showed great promise as inquisitive geographers, asking questions and recording data accurately and are now presenting and analysing their findings in the classroom.

Bookbuzz Heathfield is supporting Bookbuzz, a reading programme from BookTrust that aims to help schools inspire a love of reading for pleasure in Year 7 and 8 students.

On Wednesday 26 September Form I and Form II girls could choose their own book to take home and keep from a list of 17 titles suitable for 11 to 13-year-olds. All the books were carefully selected by a panel of experts at BookTrust to ensure quality and suitability. The girls were really enthusiastic and it took quite a bit of time for them to make their choice.

The library at Heathfield is a very popular destination for girls at lunchtime and after school and the girls love of reading is a joy to see.

Form III History Trip to Ypres Form III studies of the First World War took them out of the classroom and into the landscape in which it was fought. During our trip to Belgium we visited Tyne Cot Commonwealth and Langemarck German cemeteries which was a harsh reminder of the destructive power of war. We travelled to Ypres and at the entrance to the town viewed the monumental Menin Gate. Here every evening the poignant ceremony of the Last Post is performed and Heathfield students laid a wreath in memory of the fallen.

We travelled with our guide on to where the first gas attack in history had taken place and then finally onto to Poperinge and the Passchendaele Museum. In the gardens a reconstruction of a trench system gave the girls a chance to traverse for what so many had been the sort of place they lived in the days of war.

Sixth Form Open Evening The Sixth Form and their parents enjoyed an evening of A Level and Sixth Form information on Wednesday 26 September. The benefits of the personalised nature of study at Sixth Form A Level at Heathfield were explained, along with the wider opportunities to get involved in school life and develop their soft skills. Academic staff were present to be quizzed about their subjects whilst all present enjoyed a great supper. The atmosphere was relaxed and upbeat and both parents and girls left feeling well-informed and confident

Former Creative Director for Karl Lagerfeld and Gucci collaborates with Art Department for Heathfield Fashion Show Eve Feilen, Head of Art is pleased to announce that Stephen Lisseman, former Creative Director for Karl Lagerfeld and Gucci, will be directing the Heathfield Fashion Show, 2019.

During the Michaelmas and Lent Terms GCSE and A-Level students will benefit from Stephen's expertise through a series of 1:1 tutorials aimed at consolidating design skills.

This week, Stephen presented his portfolio and shared his experiences of working in the luxury goods sector of the fashion industry alongside Karl Lagerfeld and Tom Ford.

Classics & Latin Trip The reformed Classical Civilisation specification draws on a wide range of primary sources, both literary and visual. The OCR exam board tried, as much as possible, to select objects, which can be visited by pupils to enhance their understanding. Some of these are in the British Museum and on Saturday 29 September we ventured out to explore a number, which is central to the new GCSE and A Level.

We took a bit of time to reflect on the architecture of the British Museum and what it tells us about the impact of the Greeks and Romans on western civilization. We proceeded to the outstanding Parthenon sculptures, looking at how 5th century BC Athenians depicted the birth of Athena and their annual procession to honour and bring gifts to their patron goddess. We also examined how the Ancient Greeks portrayed their gods and heroes, like Theseus, in vase painting and what, according to these images, Athenian theatre performances might have looked like.

Pupils, who study Latin or Classical Civilisation, or expressed a particular interest in the museum, participated. Some of the more experienced gave brief presentations on artifacts previously studied.

After examining the prescribed sources, we all enjoyed some free time to wander around the collections and have lunch.

At Heathfield, we aim to broaden everyone's knowledge about the variety of careers open to them. As well as the many in-house speakers we welcome to Heathfield, we also take girls to listen to speakers outside of school. We have a longstanding relationship with Eton College and other neighbouring schools, both state and independent. Girls from Form I to Upper Sixth all receive notification of relevant speakers and are welcome to put their name down to attend. White Chapel For many years it was a tradition at Heathfield that all girls attended Chapel in a white dress. This was an expression of purity and innocence. There is a stained glass window in the Chapel that depicts a Heathfield girl wearing a white dress and bonnet.

To maintain this tradition once a term we have White Chapel and on Sunday 30 September we celebrated Michaelmas. We also have White Chapel for Candle Mass in Lent Term and Trinity in Summer Term.

Workout Of The Day (WOD) Following on from the successful co-curricular fair, which offers students the chance to try a variety of after-school activities, a fearless group of girls from the Lower Sixth signed up for WOD (Workout Of the Day). This exercise class challenges the muscular and cardio systems improving strength and toning muscle. Attending the class on a Monday evening before supper, the girls step up to the challenge of a new set of exercises each week. They have even researched exercises to bring to the class themselves. Science Club We are currently working on different mini projects in our new Science Club and I thought you might enjoy a photo of some ‘Petri Dish Art’ done by the girls and Mrs Lucy Johnson, Teacher in Charge of Biology. You will see that the one that is in the bottom centre of the photo is an attempt at reproducing the school logo by our science prefect Masha (LVI)!

MacMillan Coffee Morning Staff supported The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday 28 September to help raise funds for people facing cancer. Homemade cakes were brought in for first break and donations on the day of £100.00 were raised for Macmillan.

For those of you wishing to donate, MacMillan have set up a designated Heathfield Text 2 Donate service; to donate £5 please text JAM MKX1 to 70550.

SPORTS REPORT It has been a really successful fortnight for the Heathfield Sport Department. My personal highlight has to be seeing the girls, of all ages, come together for the first House Netball competition of the year. The atmosphere was incredible, House Captains, parents, girls and staff were all heavily involved within the electricity around the netball courts. Thank you to all who were involved and I cannot wait for Form III & IV to put on an equally exciting and competitive performance.

Congratulations to Austen for taking home the first victory!

On Wednesday the 26 September the senior Lacrosse team competed in the Berkshire

Subscribe Schools’ Past Issues at Downe House. Despite losing tough matches against Downe House Translate Tournament and Queen Anne’s, the team achieved our goal of finishing in third place coming back from two nil down to draw 3 – 3 with St. George’s and beating St. Barts 6 – 3. The team worked together as a unit and had many successful plays and the team were determined to carry on fighting until the very end of every match. The team made an outstanding effort with Alex (UVI) and Sophia (LVI) saving multiple goals and hurling the ball down the pitch. Well done everyone!

Aisha and Floria (LVI), Sports Prefects On Saturday 29 September U12, U13, U14, and U15 Lacrosse teams travelled to Old Reigatians RFC to compete against Dunottar School. The U12 team played incredibly well in their debut game, drawing 9-9. The U13 & U14 teams both played really well too but couldn’t quite grasp a win. The U15s played a brilliant and extremely entertaining match, but sadly due to a goal on the final whistle lost by just one goal. A special mention to Lily (Form II) who played two matches in goal back to back, including playing for the U15s and it was her first time in goal – well done Lily, you have shown fantastic grit, determination, and team spirit!

On Wednesday 3 October U13, U14, U15, and Senior Team played at home against St Bartholomew's School. Despite missing several key members of the 1st team, the girls performed well. A special mention must go to Boots, Floria, and Kiki who were outstanding.

Thanks also to Auriel, Roxy, and Scarlett, who having played for the U15 team stepped up to play for the seniors. The U15 team played an excellent end to end game: a draw was a fair result for both teams. Cesca was on fire scoring 4 of the 8 goals. The U14 and U13 teams played well but unfortunately conceded 8-0 and 8-4.

Subscribe We then Past Issues played in the semi-finals against Edgebarrow, It was a tough game, with the ball Translate moving up and down the court constantly and the score alternating between both teams, unfortunately ending with Edgebarrow winning by one goal. We then had a final match against St. George's, playing for 3rd place. This was another competitive game, resulting in a 4-3 win and coming a respective 3rd overall in the plate competition. Well done to everyone who played so well!

Minna and Nicole (UVI) On Wednesday 26 September U12 A&B, U13 A&B and U14 A&B teams travelled the short distance to play their first netball fixture of the year against St Georges.

U14A&B teams both, unfortunately, did not win but showed great potential for the rest of the season. U13A&B teams also displayed some great netball but could not convert their enthusiasm and passion into goals.

U12 A&B played brilliantly considering this is their first competitive match. The B team got stronger and stronger throughout the game, narrowly missing a 9-6 defeat. The U12A team showed that working as a team really does pay off, after an exciting match, with only one goal between the two teams for most of the game, they came away with 7-5 win! Well done to all girls involved and a special mention to all the players of the match – Alexia, Anya, Clemmie, Ella, Jazzy, Lulu, Mia, Sonya, Tara, and Thea.

The U14 team has been busy, after a spectacular 10-0 victory over Luckley House on Thursday 27 September they were ready to compete in the SE Berkshire Tournament on Monday 1 October. They put up a good fight and were unfortunate to lose only a few goals each game. The girls showed determination and are keen to improve their skills to come back fighting in their next fixture! Well done girls!

House Netball Form I & II competed in the first round of House Netball on Friday 28 September 2018. The atmosphere was electric and enjoyed by all! It was great to see so many older girls being role models and encouraging younger girls to be involved. A huge thank you to Aisha, Auriel, Calia, Floria, Lexi, and Roxy for helping to umpire and timing. An even bigger thank you to House Captains for inspiring and motivating the girls!

Seacole Weekend 29 – 30 September The first Seacole weekend of the new academic year was extremely busy, but a lot of fun. On Saturday morning the Classics students, plus other students who had signed up, went to the British Museum while the rest of the school were involved in sports matches.

In the afternoon, we had a House Competition Bake Off for Forms I & II who walked to the supermarket to buy ingredients before baking their house coloured cupcakes! Forms IV and above were offered free time and went into Ascot, Windsor, The Lexicon or used the afternoon to catch up on their studies. On Saturday evening the whole school was invited to the silent disco, which, if you are spectating without the music coming through the headphones, is quite an experience!

After White Chapel on Sunday, the Seacole House Captains ran a Benchball session, Forms I & II then participated in a cake decorating masterclass and I have never seen quite so much food colouring used in icing!!

Form IV embarked on a trip to Windsor for the second house competition of the weekend and completed a scavenger hunt, Form III, after their return on Saturday evening from Ypres, went to The Lexicon and Cineworld to watch Crazy Rich Asians. There were also the Twelfth Night rehearsals scheduled and the regular swimming session on Sunday afternoon. On Sunday after supper, everyone enjoyed a very well-deserved ‘chill out’ evening.
