What a glorious summer we are having and I hope it continues so you may enjoy it with your daughters once they break up for the summer.

We have had another tremendous year at Heathfield, which has passed by so quickly. This term saw our Lower School engaging in their Independent Learning Projects; Form IV getting a taste of independent life in the Sixth Form; the whole school participating in fundraising for the OSCAR foundation by running for their houses – a real accomplishment in this warm weather. We welcomed our prospective students for a taster day and sleepover and very much look forward to them joining the Heathfield family in September.

And finally, we celebrated our girls’ achievements in our final Celebration Assembly and at the Lily Ball in London, said ‘farewell’ to our Upper Sixth girls’ who will moving on to greater things.

As we close another year I wish all those girls anxiously waiting for examination results the very best of luck and wish everyone a wonderful summer with their families.

Independent Learning Projects (ILP) As part of the process for preparing our students for the future Forms I-III are given an opportunity to work on a project independently using many of the skills they have practiced during the year in their Learning to Learn classes. The main focus of these projects is to encourage independence and collaborative working. The girls are able to make decisions and organise themselves, consider what they can contribute, evaluate risk and deal with minor disputes and conflict. These are all skills that are considered to be essential for preparing for an uncertain future, a future with jobs we don’t even know about yet and where people may need to change and retrain. The girls really enjoy these activities and rise to the challenge admirably as well as having fun!

Form I worked on an ILP exploring aspects of what it means to be British. This ranged from stereotypical things such as saying sorry (a lot), queuing or complaining about the weather to important ideas such as fair play (including creating the rules for many sports), the rule of law, democracy or equality.

The winners chose to donate their £25 prize to the NSPCC. The judges were impressed with the way all the different talents within the group were used in this presentation. Well done to Bella, Eva, Isabella, Isis, Joy and Theodora. The runners-up chose to donate their £15 prize to Young Minds. The judges felt this group had worked well together and had thought about how to include the audience. Well done Alisa, Casilda, Hanna, Milly, and Tessa.

Form II worked on the theme of Equality. They were asked to create a mood board, a devised piece of theatre and a National Theatre style programme including a cast list, rehearsal photographs and some of the research they had used to create their scenarios or play.

Angel, Bozhena, Ella, Larissa, Lucy and Rocio were declared the winners because there was evidence of deeper thinking and application of ideas. They chose to donate £25 to Guide Dogs for the Blind. There were joint runners-up with £10 being donated to their chosen charities of WWF and the LGBT Foundation.

As has become something of a tradition, this year’s ILP for Form III was to “Plan a Prom”.

This is a culmination of the financial planning and money management skills the girls have been learning about in PSHE, with the aim of planning a safe, financially viable and fun Prom. The judges chose the Secret Garden prom as the winner and £25 will be donated to ActionAid. Congratulations to Adelaide, Caoimhe, Francesca, Roxy, Sienna, and Zahra.

Tropical was felt to be a worthy runner-up and £15 will be donated to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Very well done Claudia, Freya, Lily P, Sibby, Tamara and Teresa.

Form I History Trip to Canterbury and Dover Both Dover and Canterbury are sites that embody a continuing development of English History. The chronological range of the buildings possibly surprised Form I. There has been a Cathedral at Canterbury for almost fifteen hundred years and it continues to be a centre of worship today. Form I, prepared by their studies in History, were eager to trace the footsteps of arguably the most famous event in the Cathedral’s history, the martyrdom of the Archbishop of Canterbury in AD 1170, Thomas Becket. Yet even here the story was not an event but a process spread out over centuries. We saw the original site of the shrine of the 12th century and the massive Church built over this early site in the 14th century which was a reaction to the fame of Becket, a building that grew in size and detail as his fame spread across Europe and pilgrims streamed from all over the Christian World to the site of the Saint’s martyrdom. Tales of the miracles wrought by his bones are depicted in panels of stained glass, still in the Church.

Walking further we were introduced to a sculpture designed to commemorate the end of the First World War, a collection of blown-glass amphorae suspended from the ceiling in the shape of a boat, redolent of the Church’s nave and its purpose as a vehicle of salvation.

responsible for Becket’s death and done penance for it at the shrine we had just left. Indeed

After a visit to the shop that included historical and unhistorical purchases, we headed back to the coach eager to avoid the traffic that marks our own century. To fit one thousand years of History into a one day trip was a day well spent.

Fourth into Sixth Form IV have enjoyed sampling life in the Sixth Form this week with a four-day programme packed with taster sessions and skills workshops. They have been learning how to problem solve as a team, manage money, plan meals and undertake taster sessions of a variety of A Level subjects.

The girls also enjoyed a great morning of workshops with the Uni Taster Days Company, looking at university choices and best career options.

Art History Trip to London Bea, Ellie, Flora, Nicole, and Tanya (LVI) travelled with Ms Meeson into London for a day of Art History on 3 July. We started off by visiting the fabulous Rodin exhibition at the British Museum. As Rodin is one of our specialised artists for our course, it helped us visually shape his own personal journey through sculpture.

We then went on to the National Gallery where we looked at the Impressionists, Monet and his Architecture as well as the Post Impressionists. One painting that we were all fascinated by was Bathers at Asnière’, as we were able to see first-hand the divisionism.

After lunch, we were lucky enough to be shown around Sotheby’s. As it is currently London Art Week, Sotheby’s had its largest annual sale on of Old Masters. The galleries were buzzing with collectors and dealers and we saw some wonderful works by Turner, Gianbologna Canova, drawings, portraits on panel and a newly rediscovered 1815 map of London. We enjoyed a private talk on a few works of art on materials and production, provenance and valuation. We were then met by Silke Lohmann, responsible for the PR for London Art Week, who took us on a tour of various Mayfair galleries.

After a long day on our feet, we had a delicious Italian before heading back to school.

Form IV & Lower Sixth Assessed Performances The IV Form Drama girls had their Component One GCSE Drama exam on the afternoon of 29 June. The piece was devised entirely by the girls, based on a quote by Maya Angelou, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you."

Using the theatrical techniques of Katie Mitchell, the girls produced a highly topical performance which explored challenging stories of women; touching on segregation, disability and the 'Me Too' movement. Congratulations to the girls on a powerful and insightful piece of theatre.

St Mary's Theatre became purgatory for the LVI girls Component One A-level Theatre Studies exam on 4 July. A site-specific piece taking influence from immersive theatre practitioners, Punchdrunk, audiences were free to roam around the full space which was dressed with the hidden secrets of the characters. The performance brief involved the reimagining of a scene from an existing play, in this case, '100' by Christopher Heinmann and Neil Monaghan, whilst demonstrating an understanding of the play in its entirety through the application of Punchdrunk's techniques.

An exciting and unusual piece, reinforced by stunning lighting and sound design.

OSCAR Foundation Fundraising This week, all girls in Forms I, II, III, IV and the Lower Sixth took to the athletics track to run a total of 100km to help raise funds for the Oscar Foundation ‘Kick like a girl’ UK football tour.

The four houses raced against each other competing to complete their 25km relays in the fastest possible time with De Valois proving victorious! This is the first of a series of fund raising activities at Heathfield to raise money for OSCAR. OSCAR is a not-for-profit organisation which provides football coaching to underprivileged boys and girls in Mumbai and across India. It provides a positive and life-changing alternative to living on the streets by helping them to understand the value of education through sport.

We are delighted that the tour will be staying at Heathfield on 11, 12 and 13 October and we look forward to welcoming the girls and playing some friendly football matches! New Joiners Taster Day and Sleepover On Friday 22 June we welcomed forty of our new girls who will be joining Heathfield this September for a Taster Day and Sleepover.

All the girls had a busy and fun timetable of events including a treasure hunt in Maths, Geography, History, Art and Languages. At break and lunchtime, the girls loved exploring the school with our current pupils. After school, everyone played Rounders in the afternoon sunshine. In the evening the girls were set a Selfie Challenge by Boarding Staff with extra points awarded for the inclusion of the Headmistress, teaching staff and Roy the school dog!

On Saturday after breakfast, the girls enjoyed Doughnut making and Zumba before joining their families who had arrived earlier for a New Parents Information morning. Everyone enjoyed a relaxed and delicious lunch outside. Lots of new friendships were formed and girls have already planned to meet up over the summer. We are really looking forward to seeing everyone again in September.

Sport Report Following the excitement of Sports Day, the rest of term has been spent battling it out on the Tennis Courts and Rounders pitches in the Inter-House competitions.

In Rounders, honours went to De Valois in the Junior Competition (Forms I & II) whilst in the Intermediate Competition (Forms III & IV) Somerville and Austen tied in first place.

The Junior tennis was a closely fought contest with most of the games being won 3 – 2 and games going to numerous deuces: Somerville’s Katrina and Georgia took first place with Austen just pipped into second place.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the girls for their commitment over the academic year, much progress has been made, as Heathfield climbs the sporting ladder of success. Thank you too, to you, the parents for your continued support on the sidelines: it is greatly appreciated.

All that is left is for me to do is to wish you an enjoyable Summer and I look forward to seeing you all again in September.

POLO We have forged quite a name in the polo world as strong team players. In fact, possibly the only allgirls team to have such consistent success at the grassroots polo tournaments against male dominant teams.

Sunday 24 June was another fantastic day of polo for the Heathfield players at Ranelagh Farm Polo.

Heathfield Diamonds, Kiki and Minty (Form IV), and Victoria (LVI) retained their SUPA Open Intermediate Girls National Championship and the Heathfield Mix team, Elicia (Form II) and Georgia (Form II) took second place in the division.

Our newest players, Heathfield Rubies, Helena (Form V), Rosaleen (Form I) and Sibylla (Form III) enjoyed the competition and played very well in the novice section. Congratulations to all players.

On Sunday 1 July Kiki (Form IV), Kitty (UVI), Minty (Form IV) and Victoria (LVI) played really well under the sweltering conditions at the stunning Black Bears Polo Club. They came second in the open division.

Georgia (Form II) played in an intermediate team with players from other schools. Thea (Form II) competed as part of her Pony Club team and they won their division.

Elicia (Form II) was also there as a quarter of the family Murphy team, they also had a great day playing as a family unit.

Somerville Weekend 23 – 24 June Saturday began with the 40 new girls who had slept over on Friday night making doughnuts with our chefs and then doing a ZUMBA class.

The English department conducted a rehearsal for Twelve Night. The performance will be next term and now that the examinations are finished there is finally time to rehearse. Later in the afternoon Form III walked to the shops with their House Mistresses’.

Just after 4pm, two coaches arrived with Papplewick boys for a social with Forms I and II. The students played Rounders in mixed teams, had a bar-b-que on the lacrosse field followed by a quiz. They finished with a noisy game of Swedish Rounders. Everybody had a great time.

On Sunday morning, girls took part in the last rehearsal for Encore, the Dance and LAMDA show. Everyone else was on the lacrosse field taking part in the Alternative Sports Day organised by Mr Benjamin and Miss Johnson who had girls literally jumping through hoops. Almost as soon as these games were over Form III and Lower Sixth headed off to the cinema, and other girls went out to compete at the SUPA Nationals.

Meanwhile, everyone else assembled in the St Mary’s Theatre for Encore, the LAMDA showcase. It was a delight to see the focus, energy, talent and poise of all the performers. Parents were justifiably proud of their daughters.

Shared House Weekend 30 June – 1 July The last house weekend of the term was organised around four big trips supported by each Head of House.

On Saturday morning Form III headed off on their Duke of Edinburgh expedition. Walking and camping went well on Saturday. Getting up early on Sunday allowed them to start walking before 7am. Despite the high temperatures, they successfully completed their hike by early Sunday afternoon. They arrived back at school tired, red in the face but rightly proud of their efforts.

The other girls spent a wonderful day exploring Thorpe Park. Despite the queues, the girls went on a plethora of terrifying rides, braving Stealth, Colossus, Nemesis Inferno and many more. The beautiful weather resulted in Tidal Wave being the most popular ride by a country mile. Many of the girls seemed to be lucky in the amusement arcades as the coach home was filled with giant stuffed toys. All in all, it was a fantastic day out.

On Sunday morning, Form IV attended Delta Force paintballing with Mr Benjamin and Mr Hart. Some students matched the competitive drive of the staff as seen in the bruises on the staff. Forms I, II and III travelled to Monkey World on Sunday after chapel. The girls enjoyed seeing so many primates in the one visit.
