Although Spring has taken its time to arrive, our term at Heathfield is in full swing with a wide range of events, trips, and talks. As you read further, you will see the girls have immersed themselves not only in their academic studies but have also attended a selection of inspirational talks and have also achieved highly in the sporting arena.

The recruitment has begun for our next Head Girl and saw the process begin with our Head Girl Hustings. As Head, I was extremely proud of all the girls who took part. To witness some that had come to Heathfield as quite shy, reserved characters, confidently stand before the whole school, students and staff, and give such assertive speeches was a real delight.

The weather may have turned cooler but the hard work for girls facing public examinations continues. They are an absolute credit to you and the staff as they are focused and determined to do their very best.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Inspiring Excellence in Maths This term, we will be entering girls into the United Kingdom Mathematics (UKMT) Junior Mathematical Challenge. Maths Prefect Torry (LVI) will continue to run a Maths Challenge club for younger girls to inspire them to take part in future Mathematics competitions.

Heathfield has expectations for girls to study Maths beyond GCSE. In Form V, we offer a Level 2 Further Mathematics qualification for our top Mathematicians, as well as A Level Maths and Further Maths.

In the Michaelmas term, Heathfield entered girls into the UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge and Mathematical Olympiad for Girls.

In the Lent term, we entered girls into the UKMT Intermediate Mathematical Challenge and the UKMT Team Maths Challenge at Oxford University.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Spanish and Religious Studies Trip to Córdoba For four days, GCSE and A Level students enjoyed a trip around the cultural centre of Córdoba, Spain. As part of the new subject specifications, the girls found the visit helpful in understanding the Spanish Language and the rich diversity of religion in Southern Spain. The dramatic procession of Semana Santa featuring effigies of The Virgin Mary and various enactments of The Stations of The Cross allowed girls great opportunity to observe the Catholic Tradition and engage in this popular festival.

The old city of Córdoba, on the outskirts during the Islamic occupation, also featured on the itinerary. La Mosque La Mesquita, simply meaning ‘The Mosque’, included yet another area of interest to RS students. Spanish Prefect Maia, took the initiative to obtain tickets for the trip and all girls used their Spanish in preparation for their GCSE role-plays by visiting the various attractions.

Guest Speaker – Megan Cooper, Sky Sports On Wednesday 18 April, the Careers and Outreach department were delighted to welcome Megan Cooper to speak to the girls at Heathfield. Megan is a publicist at Sky Sports where she works to raise the profile of women’s sport.

Megan is still in the early stages of her career, so it was great for the girls to listen to Megan talk about her teenage years, how she chose her university and starting on the careers ladder. The Heathfield girls were able to relate to Megan – she was a lacrosse player – as she talked about the decisions our girls will be facing soon. She promoted a message of hard work (she worked hard to achieve her grades) and being a kind person, a common message amongst our speakers.

Megan’s drive and determination shone through and certainly impressed the students, especially when she spoke about how she begged her way into BBC Nottingham, whilst studying at Loughborough, and made teas for them every week even though they did not really want her there.

This gave her an opportunity to see the world of media production in action, make contacts and to have a great name to put on her CV. Having had a taste of presenting early in her time with Sky Sports, Megan is working towards this goal. Having listened to her speak, we are certain that we will be seeing Megan Cooper on our screens in the not too distant future. She is a person to watch and we wish her very well.

Since last Wednesday, many of the girls have spoken to me about how much they enjoyed Megan’s visit. Rob Owen, a Heathfield parent, recommended Megan to us and we are very grateful to him for thinking of us.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

OSCAR Foundation Ashok Rathod started the OSCAR Foundation when he was only 18, using football to reach some of the younger members of the slum community in which he grew up, to help them stay in education.

The charity has proven extremely successful, now supporting 3800 children in several different centres across India; it is not just changing the life chances for the children with whom they work, it is impacting entire communities.

Last year an OSCAR foundation boys’ football team toured to the UK, staying at a range of prep and independent boys’ schools. After the tremendous success of that tour (being featured in a CBBC documentary in July), a girls’ team will now be touring in October and Heathfield are extremely privileged to be supporting and hosting the girls for part of that tour.

Kiki and Minty (Form IV) are two of the UK Young Ambassadors for the tour and in addition to working with other Ambassadors in other schools, may get a chance to meet Juan Mata who is a key supporter of the tour. The girls will be launching a series of fund-raising activities over the coming months and will really appreciate your generous support.

Ashok gave an extraordinary assembly to the school, followed by a ‘soccer skills’ session with Form I and then talked to some of our geographers about life in Mumbai and in particular the community in which he grew up.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Norman Foster talk at Eton Over the last year, the Careers & Outreach department has welcomed a wide variety of speakers, from actors and interior designers to space scientists and mental health specialists, who have represented everything from law specialists and charities (The Prince’s Trust) to The Royal Opera House and social media. The girls have also had the opportunity to attend talks and events at other schools. These have ranged from networking events, listening to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Google, Twitter and workshops.

On Wednesday 25 April, a group of Heathfield girls attended a talk with Lord Norman Foster, at Eton. The Times calls Lord Foster, the world’s most influential architect, so it was a privilege for girls interested in Architecture to meet the designer of so many iconic buildings. His works grace the skyline of many cities across the world, from New York to Hong Kong. In London, we have The Gherkin (30 St Mary’s Axe), City Hall and the Millennium Bridge. His designs can also be found in the British Museum, University of Cambridge and even at Apple HQ. For our future architects or designers, this opportunity was amazing.

Lord Foster talked about his designs as he shared insights into the design process and his emphasis on sustainability. The thought process, the engineering design skill and sheer creativity that goes into his work was fascinating. He talked about the importance of public spaces and designing buildings that generated the energy they use, which is the case at Apple HQ. It was one of the most inspirational and enjoyable talks and a true privilege to be in the audience.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Charity Chamber Concert Asuka and Charlie (UVI) and music teacher Miss Kong held a charity concert in London on Saturday April 21. They have been working towards this concert since the beginning of this academic year with a passion and determination to share the wonder of music.

Asuka explained as we are in our final year we are hoping that this event would be a catalyst to excel in our future, not just for music but to help us pursue our different paths after Heathfield.

We would also like to thank everyone at Heathfield for all your support every day at school and the acknowledgement of music. Certainly, music has helped us to develop cognitive and emotional maturity.

The concert raised over ÂŁ300 for the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). Well done girls!

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Rotary International Young Musician Competition (RIBI) - District level Since the local heats in February where runner-up and 1st prize winners were selected to compete in the next level, the RIBI District Level Music Competition was held on Sunday 22 April at St Joseph's College, Reading.

Tansy (Form V) represented the Ascot Rotary Club to compete with 11 other representatives from Banbury and Loddon Vale & Reading Maiden Erleigh areas. Tansy began her performance with Habanera from the opera Carmen. She successfully brought to life in her singing interpretation the liberated, feminist and fate/death-obsessed character of the heroine of Bizet's opera. Tansy then sang Flanders & Swann's Ill Wind - a comedic song which uses the famous tune of Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4 in E-flat major with lyrics telling the story of a man who had a whim to take up the French Horn. For her last song, Tansy sang By Strauss by the American brothers, George and Ira Gershwin.

Well done to Tansy for engaging and entertaining the audience on a bright and sunny Sunday afternoon. Having spoken to the adjudicators after the concert, the Chief Judge and Chairperson, Frances Jones, said that Tansy was her personal favourite for being a dramatic performer and the best communicator of all the candidates. Congratulations, Tansy!

Equestrian - SUPA Polo Heathfield Senior Players enjoyed a great day of Polo at Longdole on Sunday 22 April.

Angelina, Kitty and Victoria were placed 2nd in the Seniors Intermediate 1st Division. Kiki, Minty and guest player Rosie came 3rd in the Intermediate Division 2. Excellent play, well done!

Equestrian During the Easter holidays, Calia (Form III) competed at the Pachesham Equestrian Centre in Dressage and Show Jumping.

Calia was placed 2nd competing for Heathfield in the Affiliated 'Just for Schools' Show Jumping competition at 70cm with a jump off at 80cm. On the same day, she also competed in the unaffiliated Show Jumping competition and was placed 3rd.

As a result, Calia has qualified for the Dengie Show Jumping Series. Well done and good luck!

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Confirmation Heathfield was pleased to once again welcome Bishop Jonathan, one of our Governors and Bishop of Fulham in the Diocese of London, for the second Confirmation of the year.

Seven girls from Form IV took the significant step of making their commitment of faith. In a service attended by families and friends and with the support of the whole school community, the girls loudly and proudly took for themselves the promises made for them in Baptism, were anointed with holy oil and through the most ancient ceremony of the laying on of hands, became fully adult members of the Christian Church.

With the top 12 girls in the choir there to enrich the occasion, the girls heard the Bishop remind them of our commitment to lives of service, exemplified by the women and men of the S. Egidio community in Rome who, through their variety of gifts, have touched the lives of many with generosity and love. Congratulations to Florence, Impi, Lila, Marybelle, Olivia, Sophie and Tabitha.

SPORTS REPORT Athletics We saw some amazing performances at the first athletics competition of the season. Form I to IV travelled to St. Mary’s School, Ascot to race in all the track events. All the girls achieved great results with superb individual performances: Clemmie (Form I) came 3rd in 100m with a time of 14.87 secs.

Katrina (Form II) came 1st in 800m with a time of 2mins 51 secs.

Cesca (Form III) came 3rd in 1500m with a time of 6mins 4 secs.

Carolina (Form IV) came 2nd in 100m with a time of 13.90 secs and 1st in 200m with a time of 28.54 secs.

Kiki (Form IV) came 1st in the 100m with a time of 13.82 secs and 2nd in the 200m with a time of 30.28 secs.

Carolina, Kiki & Minty (Form IV) and Calia (Form III) won the Form IV relay event.

Rounders In the rounders matches the U12 team drew with LVS 9 ½ rounders all, and beat Holyport College by 10 rounders to 9 ½.

The U13 team lost to Holyport 8 ½ rounders to 14 ½. The U14 played against LVS. The U14B team lost but the A team won 6 rounders to 5 ½.

Austen Weekend, 21 & 22 April Austen weekend was dedicated to the annual House Music competition where the girls were tasked with practising and performing their individual, ensemble and whole House pieces in only a short space of time. After a mixture of tennis and athletics in the morning, as well as Upper Sixth mocks and Art examination preparation, the girls worked hard to learn the words and choreography to their House songs.

As a break from their labours, the girls were treated to some fun inflatables on Saturday evening including some bungee running, surf-board balancing and a bouncy castle. On Sunday, the girls were back to work perfecting their routines and practising with their accompanists resulting in a contest of great talent, humour and energy. Our guest judge was impressed by the standard of the entries and commented that some of the performers could have been professionals. Congratulations to Isabella (Form I), Vasilisa and Tansy (Form V) as the individual winners and to Seacole House for winning the contest overall. Thank you to the Music staff as well as Austen and Boarding for helping to make the weekend such a success.

Inside Heathfield - Issue 78

Somerville, 28 – 29 April Saturday morning was busy with girls playing tennis and taking part in Track and Field events. UVI undertook mock exams whilst Year V had revision classes for Physics, Biology, Religious Studies, Spanish and French.

Form III camped out on the top field on Saturday night. It was cold and wet however the students put up their tents quickly and got on with enjoying singing and warming themselves around the fire. Despite the weather, everyone got some sleep until the dawn chorus made it impossible to enjoy a Sunday lie-in!

Meanwhile Forms I and II travelled to Sunningdale boarding school for boys to take part in Scottish Country Dancing on Saturday night. Following three Reeling lessons here at school our students danced well. After supper there was a short disco with everyone mixing well and generally having a great time.

The whole of Form VI took the opportunity to relax from studies in the evening and organised trips to the cinema.

On a cold Sunday morning Form I and III headed to the woods for Laser Tag, Archery and Shooting. Everyone soon got warm running around firing their lasers at other students and various aliens.

Form II attempted the Eidur Parenting Challenge on Sunday afternoon. The girls competed in teams to complete challenges parents face. The tasks included making realistic animals out of play-doh, face painting, toy assembly and completing a relay assault course with a buggy.

The highlight of the whole weekend for all girls from Form I to VI was walking the Virtual Reality Plank. Once the headset is on you think you are eighty floors up and walking a Plank suspended in space. The game not only challenges our fear of heights but it also involved spiders and assorted confrontations with other nasty attackers. The screams and antics of the players entertained more than playing the game itself.
