The twinkling lights of Advent and the multiple

decorations appearing around the School are such a morale booster for everyone.

Exciting and industrious activity around St Nicholas’ Stalls, our annual Charity Christmas event, has been tangible this week. It is great to see the four Houses working collaboratively with one another to raise funds for their selected charities.

Emma, our Sixth Form Charity Prefect, proposed charities in Assembly for the School to vote on. These ranged from a local homeless charity to an orphanage in South India where Emma worked last summer. It is part of our founding values that Heathfield is a school where we educate young women to go out and make the world a better place for those who are not so fortunate. I am so very grateful to all those who have supported and enabled the girls to look out for others.

Heathfield continues to reach out to our local community and Brontë House girls have written uplifting seasonal letters to the residents who live in St David’s Nursing Home in Ascot Priory.

I wish you a wonderful weekend and I hope you enjoy reading about everything that your daughters have been up to at Heathfield.

Alia and Tabby in UVI; Poppy in LVI; and Julia in Form III with myself in the chair. Girls from Forms III to UVI attended and with current Covid-19 restrictions, this meant Sixth Form and Form V in the theatre and Form III and Form IV attended via Zoom, as did parents and wider members of our community.

The questions were submitted by the whole school, with many coming from our new Form I students, and ranged from equality and Covid-19 to technology and the environment.

The evening was a huge success, and the panel did a fine job of answering the questions and getting their points across.

Anti-Bullying Week This year the theme of Anti Bullying Week was United Against Bullying. Heathfield began supporting the Anti-Bullying Alliance initiative with an Odd Socks Day, to celebrate what makes us all unique.

Pupils in Austen House reminded us what to do if a pupil feels like they are being bullied and how we can stand together to not allow unkindness to ever be accepted. Their talk underlined how everyday acts like listening to young people, having a conversation, thinking about the impact of our words, or stopping before hitting ‘like’ on a hurtful social media post, can help to reduce bullying.

We recognise that through making small, simple changes to our own and others behaviour, we can create a happy environment for everyone.

On Friday 20 November, GCSE Physics students had an exciting opportunity to join

well-known and fascinating physicists working in space, broadcasting, climate and laser technologies.

The girls were joined by Liz Steward of Airbus Defence and Space to learn about satellites and the future of space science and Dr Tamsin Edwards gave an interesting, in depth analysis of the reality of climate change. Simon Singh shared theory and evidence for the Big Bang and Dr Ceri Brenner provided information on how we could possibly develop lightsabres using plasma!

A real revelation to some of the amazing ways physics can be used to learn more about the world around us.

Form V Careers Interviews The second part of the Careers Guidance for Form V took place this week. It usually takes place at the end of Form IV but due to the pandemic it was delayed. Prior to October halfterm Form V completed their Morrisby assessments, which they were able to review with their parents over the holidays.

This week saw the girls completing their one-to-one meeting with a Morrisby careers adviser which will result in a final report that we hope will help the girls build a profile that identifies their core strengths and reflects their personality, interests and motivations.

These final reports also feed into planning to encourage girls in careers in which they are already interested and inspire girls to think about careers they may not have considered previously.

To support a greater understanding of the huge variety of roles and career pathways, the girls can attend a variety of different careers talks. So far these have included speakers from CSI & Forensics, Millinery, Art Curation, One Young World, and the CEO of the Jo Cox Foundation.

Anna Hawes, Head of School, discussed how art infiltrates our daily lives and the positive impact the creative industry has had on wellbeing during lockdown. Ms Hawes shared details of the several undergraduate courses available at Falmouth from Sustainable Product Design to Illustration. Ms Hawes promoted the advantages of a specialist university and its vibrant community with diverse backgrounds. She further spoke about what students could do to gain experience whilst studying, including joining one of the fifty clubs and societies.

Ms Hawes highlighted the importance of finding a path that is individual to each student and gave a glimpse of what studying at Falmouth entails. From there, students listened intently as she spoke about making fashion sustainable through grind harvesting dyes to include in practices with models, brands, and other companies.

The lecture was enlightening to those interested in pursuing a creative pathway.

St Nicholas’ Stalls Our festive annual charity fundraising event St Nicholas’ Stalls had to be greatly reduced this year due to Covid restrictions. We really missed all our families and the bustling atmosphere with external stall holders. However, we were determined to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charities, Great Ormond Street Hospital, OSCAR Foundation, Robbie's Rehab and Royal Marsden Hospital.

Each of the four Houses; Austen, de Valois, Seacole and Somerville sold raffle tickets before the event to friends, family and staff. House Captains also took orders for House hoodies, pyjamas and sliders to raise funds.

Parents and Heathfield families joined in the fundraising by bidding on fantastic donations in our online auction which opened at 8am this morning (Friday 27 November) and closes at midnight tonight.

Every girl took part in a whole school quiz organised by the Heads of Houses with four rounds of General Knowledge, Guess the Song, Guess the Christmas Movie and Christmas Questions. The girls loved running from their Tutor bubbles to St Mary’s Theatre to claim their Raffle prizes, all generously donated by parents, and St Nicholas’ Stalls ended with everyone enjoying a special Afternoon Tea. Heathfield Caterer - Thomas Franks: Feeding Communities A big thank you to James, Executive Chef and the team at Heathfield who helped to make 200 meals for a community feeding project. Thomas Franks delivered 100 Carers packs which contained a week’s worth of meals to a community feeding project in Somerset, helping carers who are unable to receive any respite during these challenging times.

This was all funded by the Thomas Franks Charity and James at Heathfield gave his time to make 100 Lancashire Hot Pots and 100 Smoky Bean Chillies! We are lucky to have such a great catering team here at Heathfield.

Senior House Netball was a huge success last Friday. I was thrilled to see so many Seniors taking part in Netball, representing their house and enjoying themselves! It was a great win from de Valois who won all their games.

House Netball continued with the lower years and Austen facing Seacole, one of the matches was a nail-biter, finishing with one goal between them. Yet again, the House Captains did a great job in supporting their teams. Somerville and de Valois fought hard and de Valois won all their matches. The last round of our House Netball league will be played on Saturday 5 December from 10am.

I am excited to announce some competitive sport this term! We are competing in a virtual swimming gala against Bishopsgate, St George’s, Ascot and Lambrook on Monday 7 December between 4.15pm and 5.15pm. All students are welcome to participate.

Weekend 21 - 22 November This weekend began with the Wantage fashion show on Friday night, in which the girls showed off their creative talents by creating outfits from recycled materials. For Brontë, all the girls enjoyed a movie night.

Following House netball on Saturday morning, Brontë and Wantage enjoyed a circus skills workshop, as well as several highly competitive games of bingo. Saturday night was movie night for both houses. Wantage girls tucked into pizzas, while Lower Sixth gathered in their common room for Nando’s.

Upper Sixth spent the weekend revising hard for their mocks but enjoyed some time out on Saturday night for snacks and a game of monopoly. After Chapel and brunch on Sunday, Brontë and Wantage participated in the One Day Film Academy, where they learnt fight choreography and filming techniques before showing off their new skills by creating short films.
