Final Piece Evaluation

The work I have produced relates to the theme of variation and similarity from the way the images are similar in terms of colour, digital glitching and technique used, however they are also very different and vary from the way in which the images have different patterns making them look unique and making them very individual. I like the way the images I have produced are bright, bold and colourful, they have kept the colour well during the printing process and I am happy with the way they look. My piece answers the exam theme by keeping variation and similarity through a more simplistic and minimalistic way which I feel has only been explored by myself. I feel that creating something so simplistic and minimal it has more feeling to the images that have been mounted onto the plain white board. I feel that putting the images on such a simple board with simple colours it allows there to be more feeling and depth behind the images themselves because it means that they stand out and look bolder, bigger and brighter. The work I have produced is similar to that of Nicholas Godden because he creates similar photographs of buildings and takes away the background behind and replaces that with colour of his choice, this then makes his work unique and to me have a kind of fantasy feeling to it from the simplicity. My work is extremely similar to that of his because I have almost tried to copy what he has created however I have done this with my own twist and mix on this. I have done this by taking the part of the building and reflecting them against one another making a sort of kaleidoscope. This is a twist on Corey Stevens work where he has a part of architecture and rotates it round a point to create these kaleidoscope images which look again very simplistic and hold a lot of meaning and depth to them. I feel also that my visual work is extremely identical to that of Nicholas Godden and also of Corey Stevens however I suppose I have taken their ideas and put my own twist and own ideas into making my idea while being inspired by theirs. I am extremely pleased with the outcome I have created; it has excelled my intentions of my final piece by becoming better and better as I have created all of the individual components to put it together as a whole. I am especially happy with the way that the images of the white board have been arranged with all of the colours going down in their individual colour so that they correspond to the colours that they are. I am also happy with the way the images go onto the block and are raised up because I feel that they look as if they are floating which gives a bit more depth to the photos as they also may look 3D in a way which I find will make the images more unique and different but also give some more meaning to them. While creating my final piece I had some trouble trying to find out how to put the images I wanted to put on the wooden blocks and getting the right size, I found some problems through printing and I found that printing them slightly too big (12.3cm by 12.3cm) instead of having the size of the wooden block (12cm by 21cm) I glued them onto the block and then simply trimmed round the edge of the wooden block removing the excess image which was just a plain colour. The only other hassle I encountered was that I needed to centre the images onto the wooden blocks and I found that doing by eye would have been the only way that would work properly and effectively without many issues and problems. I was aware that I might then have some problems mounting them onto the board however this wasn’t the case and it worked rather well. I feel my strengths throughout were that I had a clear idea and that I didn’t get caught up on any issues meaning my idea would then have been changed making me indecisive and rendering my idea almost useless to me because I would have become confused and then when I came to creating this final piece I would have started to come up with other ideas etc… I also feel that my other strength was that when it came to creating my final piece I was able to do so with ease and no stress as I had planned everything very clearly and easily for myself making it very stress free and easily done. My weaknesses would definitely have been the time it took to paint and sand down the wooden blocks and board because I had to give the board several coats of paint and this was very time consuming. I also found it a challenge to cut out the images that I printed out in order to put onto the blocks as I needed to cut them really cleanly without scratching the images and making them look bad.
