Physical Variation Techniques i was really pleased with how these physical mockups came out when experimenting with a variation of techniques. i particuarly liked the scratching technique as the white lines made on the portrait stand out against the black and white filter. i also liked the combination with the scratching and the burning technique as these two together form a strong outcome.

Coburn and Stevens Responses i think that these corburn and stevens responses have a very unique look to them as the photos have been able to create interesting geometric shapes. i particuarly like the colourful ones like the purple one on the left as you can see the depth of the differences in colour.

Physical Maquette One i liked how i used the scratching tecnique here with the knife only on his jacket as i feel this makes his facial features and arm stand out. i also added a red strip as a final touch to add some depth to it.

Physical Maquette Two i am quite pleased with how these maquettes have come out as i really like the theme of having red against the black and white photos - they combine well. i especially like the rippingt/tearing outcome as it works well against the model.

Physical Maquette Three in this maquette i decided to go for a more simplistic style as i felt the other maquettes had more complexity to them already. i think that this photograph was perfect for the red tape lining as it has proportioned well.

analysis of ‘skin’ and ‘suit’ edits overall, i am pleased with how my complex edits have turned out as i wasn’t sure if they were going to be able to represent the theme of similarity and variation that well but they actually had a good outcome and i feel this is a different approach to exploring and presenting this theme with these photos. i used on some edits some typography as i think using specific words can enforce what message i want to convey along with expressing it visually with photos. i also think that using black and white on all of these has worked well as it creates depth and also the sense of this being a serious subject matter.

in this maquette, i sliced the top part of very similar photograph as you can see from the trees being behind his face. i took it from the photo where he was wearing a suit as i wanted to show the same face but put on different identities. (i also did this the other way round). i used the scratching technique on the writing to add more effect and added red tap between the face and neck to make some form of seperation.

physical maquette two this maquette is very much identical to the techniques used in my first one. the two maquettes are supposed to relate to each other anyway as i swapped the top parts round as you can see i took the head from the first maquette and put it on the photograph where he is wearing a suit. i also used the scratching technique and the lining of the red tape here too.

physical maquette three i am very happy with how this maquette turned out as originally i was just going to cut them both in half then stick them next to each other, but felt that the folding would be a more creative approach. i like how i have the suit photo on one side and the stereotypical working class male look on the other.

sketch plan one i do like how this layout looks as i think it has a sense of order in the way that the photos are positioned in the same place between the spaces of the yellow tape. however, i also see how it being very much like a pattern and how it all looks the same as a negative as i think there is no sense of different contrasts here. i also placed the similar groups of photos into sections and feel that maybe mixing them together could be a stronger outcome instead.

sketch plan two i would say i definitely prefer this sketch plan . over my first one as i feel there is more of a variation with the photographs i can visually display on the board. so instead of grouping the certain types of photos like i did in the first one, i have put them in places where they are able to mix so i’ve put the suit photo next to the ‘rough’ photo of the model so it can relate more to the theme of having that variation between them.

digital layout option one this digital layout is exactly the same as my sketch plan two and it has turned out just as i wanted it to. there is lots of variation with the photographs and i think the balance between the typography and photos work really well together as i haven’t done typography on every yellow strip and photograph. i decided to put it on a grey background as i think it makes my photographs stand out as they are all black and white anyway and contrasts well with the yellow strips of text. this option will definitely be one i am hevaily considering to do for my final outcome.

digital layout option two i like how in this layout i have been able to the square shape of the photos but also make form into a circle shape around the whole board - i think this adds a unique effect to it. i haven’t added any text onto the yellow banner in this one as i wanted to see what it would look like with just the typography displayed on the photographs instead - it definitely has a sense of simplicity to it without the text and just having the colour on its own against the black and white background and photos. however, i preferred presenting my work in rows like i did in option one as i feel my photos will be presented better. this looks good digitally but i feel it would not look as good on the real board presentation.

final piece layout for my final piece, i have decided to go with my sketch idea two as i felt it was the strongest form of being a good outcome. i am only using black and white photographs as i feel that it goes well against the type of photos of the models i have taken. i have decided to use some typography as it is something that is one of my strongest creative points and it expresses what my photography within the them ‘similarity and variation’ is about instead of leaving it to a visual representation. i also used some typography on the yellow banners with some quotes i felt were related to what message i am trying to express so for example on one of them i put “different cultures, same person.” as i felt this is was a strong piece of text, yet it is short and simplistic. some of the photographs i will leave how they are, however, on some i will do some physical editting techniques such as scratching, folding, tearing etc as i would like to have that variation here of different techniques instead of keeping them all the same. overall, i feel that this outcome will turn out to be an eyecatching piece with the way i have layed outmy photographs and banners and the way it is mostly all black and white will be different as it has a sense of seriousness to it.
