Introduction HEATHFIELD & CO

Heathfield & Co are designers and manufacturers of decorative lighting. Starting at our workshop in Kent, our pieces go on to light up extraordinary environments across hospitality, residential and beyond. Our pieces focus on the richness of the materials that they’re made of, most often glass, ceramic, stone and brass. Whether it’s a five-star hotel or a country cottage, our lighting is most at home in comfortable and well-considered spaces.

Our collections of table and floor lamps, wall sconces and pendants are inspired by the world around us, our influences span architecture, fashion and jewelry design. We also offer dedicated services to professional and trade customers, as well as bespoke designs.

We are admittedly quality obsessed. We partner with a global community of makers to ensure each piece is made in the best and most resourceful way possible. With this spirit of collaboration, we ensure that each light is the result of our entire philosophy at work: to do more than create lighting, but to celebrate light.

The Itero Collection PRODUCT COLLECTION

Like any business firmly rooted in a design practice, we’re always evolving what we create.

That’s why you might notice this collection feels a bit different. A little bolder. A little braver.

Above all, a lot cosier. We’re pleased to share our Itero Collection; a collection born from a desire to push our design vision forward.

Where previously our approach might have veered more classical, it’s taking on a fresh and contemporary feeling as it matures. We like to think of it as aging in reverse. The result is a series of pieces that invite us to take a moment, slow down and enjoy the glow of a well-lit room on a cool evening.

That doesn’t mean we are abandoning what we’ve done for the last forty years. This collection still celebrates the same high degree of quality and care as every piece we’ve produced to date.

It’s crafted largely from ceramic and glass – materials we’re known for, and materials where we know just who to turn to, to bring them to life.

KOA Too complex for most manufacturers, the diamond-shaped form of our Koa glass required the skill of our most trusted European artisan glassblower. Through a tireless experimentation process, we uncovered just the right tones of brown, beige and white to cast a warm, earthy glow.

ASTRI Drawing inspiration from Scandinavian sensibility, Astri brings a sense of earthiness.

Its uneven curves and irregular form create a surface of dents and dimples unique to each piece.

NURI Our Nuri table lamp provides a sense of tactility and warmth. Look closely at the surface and you can see little grooves and craters. These aren’t imperfections, these are the process of their making. It means that no two pieces are alike.

KOBI Kobi perfectly encapsulates the meaning of our Itero Collection. It celebrates evolution and highlights the collection’s Japanese undercurrent. The two-tiered pendant moves a classic design forward, whilst the table and floor lamps put materiality at the heart of the design. The Italian Calacatta gold marble is carefully honed into a matt surface; a departure from the high-gloss finish that many expect from marble.

OATIS Oatis represents the evolution of our collection, of what Itero means. The contemporary curves and warm beige metalwork draw inspiration from Scandinavian sensibility. It invites us to take a moment, slow down and enjoy the glow of a well-lit room on a cool evening.

AYDA The finishing process of our Ayda table lamp sees the ceramic finished at a very high temperature in the kiln. This causes the material to rapidly heat and, like little bubbles bursting, forms a texture that up-close looks like the face of the moon.

ELARA Our Elara table lamp takes its cues from the Japanese principle of Wabi Sabi, of finding joy in imperfection. It’s about tactility, earthiness and slowing down. Its handsome ceramic base is full of little craters and dimples, each revealing the story of how it was made.

DORI Our new Dori wall light presents an honest sense of earthiness. The rough surface finish of the ceramic is achieved by carefully controlling the temperate in the kiln during firing. This charming texture and the deep ridges that run from top to bottom, create a homely sense of tactility and warmth.

ARLO Arlo is simple and modern in design. The cross section detail that defines the collection, bridges the arch between the stem and conical lampshade. Finished in Satin Brass, the versatile design is available in floor lamp, table lamp and wall light options.

DURA The base of our Dura table lamp is cut from a block of alabaster specially sourced from a quarry in Spain. From there, our designers work closely with the lead artisan of one of our most trusted suppliers, a small, family-run business in Sarral, to achieve the lamp’s hand-carved finish.

Alabaster The perfect canvas for light to dance across

Alabaster has been used for centuries to create beautiful sculptures and carvings. From statues of the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to the figures of the Renaissance. It is formed from layers of mineral deposits, like limestone and calcite, that over time create a soft, white stone. The smooth, cool surface of Alabaster is the perfect canvas for light to dance across. For this, and for so many reasons, it is one of our favourite materials.

The journey of our Alabaster collection begins in Teruel; a mountainous region in eastern Spain.

Blocks of the natural stone are extracted from quarries and transported to the studio of one of our most trusted suppliers. It is here that the raw material is carefully cut and formed into our distinctive designs.

Our designers work closely with the lead artisan of this small, family run business in Sarral.

Tireless experimentation of form and texture go into a new design before we closely observe each prototype. Are the ridges deep enough? How does it feel in our hands? We are admittedly obsessed with these small details. But it’s how we feel we can create something truly special.

Every hand carved shape in the collection draws influence from nature. The minimalist sphere of Rhea is a simple design that echoes the soft light of the moon. Waves, ridges and grooves in table lamps like Roca and Blanca create more sculptural pieces – beautiful objects that cast playful reflections and mesmerizing effects across their surfaces when the light is on.

Light passes subtly through the delicate stone, highlighting its cloud like appearance. The softly diffused light casts a warm, welcoming glow - perfect for creating a relaxed and ambient atmosphere in any room. Natural variation in the stone gives each product its own individual markings. No two pieces will ever look the same. Veins of taupe and dark brown form infinite compositions across the surface, making each lamp a work of art in its own right.

Glass Intricate details that celebrate the human element of our products

The art of glass making is complex and innovative. It is intricate and artistic, and one of the most creative materials we work with. Steeped in history, the techniques used to blow, mold and cut glass stem from traditional methods. Methods that are deeply rooted in the culture of the locations we source it from. Over time, practices have modernized. A new, experimental approach, supported by a wealth of historic knowledge, means we can design without limitation.

The inspiration for our decorative glass is never two-dimensional. It evolves and takes on a narrative as it develops. It takes influence from the world around us… ridges and grooves in modern architecture, ripples on the surface of water, the constantly reforming shape of clouds. Take the glass shades of Nivalis - they are formed like the pointed petals of a snowdrop flower. Fluted lamps like Mae and our pumpkin shaped Pedra, reflect other organic forms, and create mesmerizing reflections across their surroundings.

Our network of talented glass artisans are based throughout Europe. Often family run businesses, the makers harness skills that have been passed down through generations. They cannot simply be trained and taught. We admire the craft that goes into every piece and observe years of practice and handmade application. Consider Koa - the diamond form, too complex for most manufacturers, required the skill of our most trusted artisan glassblower. Through a tireless experimentation process, we uncovered just the right tones of beige, brown and white to cast a warm, earthy glow.

The close relationships we have with our community of artisans is essential. We craft and refine every detail together, from initial inspiration to the final sample. But the journey between these points differs for every product – working and reworking the design until we achieve the desired result. Bubbles, grains and crackles vary between each hand blown form, ensuring every product is truly one of a kind.

Volcanic frit, a finish you will find throughout our glass collection, is a fine example. Metallic grains are cocooned in two layers of molten glass. As the metal reacts to the heat, the glass frames the volcanic frit on its surface – marking a moment in time and a unique reaction on each piece. The nuances of mouth blown glass celebrate the human element of our products - features that simply cannot be replicated through mass production.

Ceramic Objects of beauty that come to life behind the locked door of the kiln

Ceramic is produced from clay and other minerals from the earth. The term itself originates from the Greek word Keramos, meaning ‘burnt earth’. This is why you will find organic references throughout all of our ceramics. It is a humble nod to the origin of the material. We don’t want our products to look overly processed. We celebrate imperfection, and we embrace the raw nature of such a unique material.

Natural influences are central to our ceramic designs. The subtle texture of a stone or the deep grains in the surface of wood. Intricate patterns found in botanical forms often spark a new idea or interesting texture. We’re constantly experimenting. Sharing ideas and inspirations to our network of ceramicists to see what can be achieved. The artisans we work with are experts in their field, and they know exactly what can be tried and what might need adapting.

Our ceramic is sourced in Alcobaca in central Portugal. Clay materials are abundant in Portuguese soil, and the area is known across the world for its specialist expertise in the handmade production of decorative ceramics. Which material we work with depends on the design intent. Porcelain is soft to the touch. It is a noble material that is both beautiful and incredibly durable. Earthenware is fired at a lower temperature in the kiln, which means it can be produced in numerous shapes and decorations. It gives us vast possibilities with glaze – colour, texture and pattern.

The finishing of ceramic is complex and magical. Decorative glazes and rough textured surfaces are the result of unique reactions in the kiln during firing. Factors like heat, space and duration all play a role in how the finished piece looks. How the bubbles pop or the colour fades from one tone to another. These distinctive features hold infinite variation, which can never be replicated between any two pieces.

Consider Elara or Terra. They are finished at a higher temperature than other products. This causes the material to rapidly heat and, like little bubbles bursting, form a grainy texture that up close looks like the face of the moon. Reactive glazes also create endless characteristics. Take the delicate crackle of Camellia, or the layered black brush strokes of Pierre. The glaze looks plain when first applied, and the finished result can only be admired after firing. Distribution of pattern and colour fusions come to life behind the locked door of the kiln.

Our ceramic collection does more than cast light in a room. Each piece has a rare identity - an object of beauty, full of charm, quirk and craftsmanship.

The Nova Collection PRODUCT COLLECTION

The inspiration for our Nova Collection has developed through conversation, in response to what is happening around us. At a time of such change, we have evolved our aesthetic to create designs with a new, conscious approach.

Reflecting on our product range, we highlight the design features that define us – glass production techniques that we know and have mastered over many years. Building on this foundation, the Nova collection covers new ground.

Exploratory finishes reimagined on beautifully simple glass forms are complemented by solid brass details, with a fit and finish that elevates the design. The considered connection of these elements create the focus of our new collection of clean and contemporary lighting.

COSMO White glass grains disperse naturally across the surface of our Cosmo pendant, forming irregular patterning unique to every piece. Available with Satin Brass and Dark Bronze metalwork options, light diffuses softly beneath the domed disk, casting reflections through its considered silhouette.

ORLA PENDANT Characterised by its uniquely speckled finish and curved form, Orla is an expressive creation. Metallic grains are protected in a cocoon formed by two layers of molten glass, in an artisanal technique practiced by our talented glassmakers. As the metal reacts, the delicately tapered bowl shaped glass frames the volcanic frit on its surface, creating infinite variations of markings on each piece.

MILO Evoking a sense of serenity, the cloud-like formations in the surface of our Milo pendant captivate, inspiring the imagination to detect individual shapes and outlines.

A Light Touch DESIGN INSPIRATION

In an overwhelmingly digital world, we are drawn to natural materials and textures to calm our senses. They somehow bring us closer to reality. Now more than ever as we seek and crave the physical touch, these materials help to provide balance in our lives. They might remind us of a walk through the woods or a comforting memory. These emotive connections mean that enhanced tactility has an increasingly important presence in our homes and surroundings.

There is a conscious focus on texture in recent interiors. Thick bouclés and natural linens, with other earthy materials like cork, bamboo and natural stone play a fundamental role in the furniture and accessories we invest in for our homes. The materials provide a look that feels far from processed. It feels pure and honest and imperfect.

When we visually absorb these textures, our mind leads us to imagine how that surface might feel to touch. The layering of these textural elements are essential in creating comfortable and relaxing environments. The feeling of touch and tactile surfaces are a vital component in our design aesthetic, as they can form the mood, tone and temperature of a room.

We explore how light reacts with the surface. Raised textures can absorb light to convey a sense of warmth and relaxation, whilst pairing complementary textures like a raw, porous ceramic with a soft, woven fabric lampshade creates a balanced space. Our recently launched Ayda and Elara table lamps illustrate this perfectly. Their surfaces contain little grooves and craters. Each one tells a completely unique story of how the pieces are made.

Tactility can of course run deeper than the surface texture. Take our Elder and Cedar table lamps – the sunken grooves of the ceramic are almost impossible not to touch. The vertical ridges allow light to fall across the base in a playful way. Running your finger across its surface provides us with a sensory experience that makes it more than just an attractive product. It becomes a key part of the room’s atmosphere and identity.

Lighting as Sculpture DESIGN INSPIRATION

During the day, when the sun is high in the sky, a piece of lighting’s purpose isn’t as clear as, say, a sofa or a console, whose function doesn’t change with the changing of time. With the room flooded in natural light, what role can lighting play?

Lighting can do a lot more than cast light. It can cast beauty. It can cast a sense of identity throughout the interior. To us, a piece of lighting at its most successful has the same presence as a sculpture. In fact, lighting as sculpture was pointed out by a panel of experts in Architectural Digest as one of the key interior design trends of 2021. Lighting as sculpture isn’t something that we see as a trend that comes in and out of fashion. Instead, it’s a guiding principle for every piece we design.

Look no further than the Verdi, where a curving bulb creates an unexpected interruption to the middle of the base. Its material is just as intriguing as its form. Made from curving, blown glass with volcanic frit detailing, it’s the kind of kaleidoscopic piece you can gaze at again and again and find new surprises every time.

Sculptural lighting can be just as much about the quiet details as it is about the theatrical elements. This is especially true for the Saha Table lamp, with its spiralling base that leads up to the light source. Or the Venice, another table lamp, with a squat little base and rings that circle along its side like water ripples emanating out. The contrasting colour patterns echo the link to water, just like the dancing light reflections in the famous canals it’s named after. The ridged edge is just as pleasing to look at as it is to run your finger across. It tells us that a light’s form is all the more powerful when it adds an element of tactility. It just goes to show the many things our lighting can do for us, even when it’s switched off.
