One of the most important artists working in South America today, the Rio de Janeiro-based Beatriz Milhazes represented Brazil in the 2003 Venice Biennale, and her work is held in major museum collections worldwide. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's permanent collection includes 6 Milhazes paintings. Known for bright color and imagery inspired by Brazilian culture, Milhazes often uses an original technique called mono-transfer. She applies paint to a plastic surface, presses it into the canvas, then peels the plastic away, creating delicate layers of color and design. This piece features ornamental imagery inspired by Baroque colonial art.
