This month is Biodiversity Month and honestly we couldn’t be in a better part of the world to celebrate it. The sheer abundance of native flora and fauna we have nearby is incredible. So use this month as an excuse to go out and enjoy it - and maybe help increase it. We can’t forget Father’s Day of course. This is not always a happy day for everyone, but whether we have a dad (or a good one) or not there is hopefully someone in your life that fulfills that special spot. Or maybe your children are lucky enough to have an amazing dad they want to celebrate on this day. Did you make it down to the Fishing Classic? So good to have it back after it having to be cancelled last year. Was great to see the town buzzing and everyone enjoying themselves. So many visitors are already planning their trip here for next year’s event.

IT DOES FEEL like this year is rushing by just a bit too quickly though doesn’t it? But September means the start of spring which is always such a beautiful time of year (unless you are a seasonal hay fever sufferer of course!).

THE DEEP AND abiding love of the ocean that Wolf Rock Dive’s owners Fiona and James have is evident to see when you walk into their new premises. Not only do they run a world-class PADI 5-star dive centre right here in Rainbow Beach, they now display and sell stunning local jewellery and ocean-themed books for children, including pop up, colouring and educational marine conservation books, and jigsaw puzzles. “We have our own children with a thirst for reading, so we thought we’d stock the type of materials we share with our children to educate them on the underwater world that plays such a huge part of our lives,” owner Fiona told Rainbow Beach Community News.

“We love Rainbow Beach, it has endless natural beauty, beaches and surf. The small community keeps the beach town vibe,” Fiona said.“James and I have been Scuba diving instructors our whole adult lives. After travelling the world we met in WA and pursued our career by purchasing Wolf Rock Dive Centre in 2016.”

Located 2 kilometres off Double Island Point, Wolf Rock was classified as a marine sanctuary in 2003 when it was observed to be the only known gestation site for the critically endangered grey nurse shark on the east coast of Australia. There is something for all ocean lovers at Wolf Rock Dive - drop in and visit Fiona and James today at 339 Carlo Road, Rainbow Beach. More info: wolfrockdive.com.au or 07 5486 8004.

“As a dive site it is truly world-class diving. Being a protected Marine Park Green Zone makes it home to a large number of fish species, turtles, rays, whales, sea snakes, and plenty of sharks. It’s home to the grey nurse shark, and we are lucky to have them all year round as the pregnant females congregate around the Rock as a safe space to grow their babies.”

• Provide predator-free water sources for wildlife. Use multiple water bowls in different locations and position them out of reach of predators. Use a saucer with stones and sticks in it so butterflies, bees, and lizards can drink safely.

BIODIVERSITY IS the variety of all life forms on earth – the different plants, animals, and microorganisms, and the ecosystems that are their Biodiversityhomes.Month is celebrated to promote the importance of connecting with nature and also caring for nature in all its diversity. We all need nature - but nature also needsAustraliaus! is one of only a handful of ‘mega-diverse’ countries - and as we all know many of our plants, animals, and ecosystems are not found anywhere else in the world. We are extra lucky here on the Cooloola Coast with our unique combination of coastal woodlands, wallum, rainforests, and marine environments all boasting a huge range of native flora and fauna.

• Limit the use of chemicals around the garden to protect our insects. Insects form a critical foundation to our environment’s health.

Celebrate Biodiversity This Month Myna Birds are a Major Problem THE INDIAN or Common Myna (Sturnus tristis) was introduced to Australia in the 1860s. They occur in many cities and towns along the east coast of Australia and are spreading inland. They are extremely aggressive and territorial birds that out-compete native birds for food, water and shelter. Myna’s are detrimental to our native environment, infrastructure and economy due to: • Displacement of native animals from nests (tree hollows) • Killing the chicks and eggs of native birds • Being carriers of disease and bird mites to humans • Harassment of pets and stealing their food • Nesting in roof cavities creating a fire and health risk • Causing very loud noise disturbances at roost sites • Blocking down-pipes and roof gutters with their nests causing flooding in buildings • Increasing the spread of agricultural weeds How to Reduce Myna Bird Problems • Identify if myna birds occur in your area • Prevent nesting by sealing off entry points to your roof • Do not leave food outside and feed pets indoors • Use rubbish bins with lids • Join a community trapping program • Record where Myna birds occur in your area

• Plant mostly locally native plants in a variety of layers and species to encourage native birds, bees, and pollination. The layers will also provide shelter and habitat for insects, skinks, and lizards.

Celebrate our region’s unique biodiversity this month - and every month! Photo taken by Robyn Adam on one of her recent walks with the Heart Foundation Walking Group in Tin Can Bay. For more information on Gympie Regional Council’s trapping program visit weeds-and-pest-animals/pest-animalsqld.gov.au/residents/environment/controlling-www.gympie.

• Retain or install fallen logs, sticks, leaf litter, and rocks. These provide habitat for native bees, insects, lizards, and small marsupials, as well as a refuge from cats and dogs.

Protecting and increasing our biodiversity is something we can all contribute to. Here are some simple suggestions from Gympie Landcare:

• Be a responsible pet owner and keep cats inside and dogs contained at night and on leads in nature areas. Check out gympielandcare.org.au for more information or simply google ‘backyard diversity’ and choose what you can do with your space, whether it is a pot on a balcony or five acres of garden!

• Provide nesting sites and hollows for birds, possums, bats etc. Affordable nesting boxes can be purchased from Gympie Landcare, or consider making your own.

The Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun was installed in Memorial Park in the 1980s by staff from Camp Kerr and RSL sub-branch members. Since then several people have left our community, and many more have moved in and joined our cheerful, happy, supportive, fun group, who mostly continue chatting over a cup of coffee at the Tin Can Bay Bakery after ourWewalks!still have two foundation members, Joan Barnier and Linda Murphy. Well done! I was looking at a photo taken in December 2018 of the walkers, and all but one of the group of nine plus several four-footed fur family members still actively participate. Since then, and particularly after our COVID-19 pandemic restrictions were lifted, our group’s numbers more than tripled.Congratulations to the following of ‘One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay’ for achieving goals and receiving awards: Robyn Adam and Linda Fewtrell for your first 25 Walks; Verna Newman for your first 50 walks; and Melissa Haslam for your first 100 walks. Lesley McCarthy SECRETARY TWENTY-THREE LADIES recently enjoyed a five day sewing retreat at Maroochy Waters. It was a great opportunity to finish those quilts that had been awaiting attention plus start new ones, and also to make new friends and be thoroughly spoilt with amazing food. Our photos show Leonie Meggitt modelling her quilted jacket that was made using a jelly roll along with a sweatshirt as a lining. And Gwen McKeon made this very simple bag, a great gift idea. Tin Can Bay Quilters meet every Tuesday from 9.00am to 12 noon at the Community Hall on Tin Can Bay Road. All visitors are most welcome.

YOU MIGHT RECALL our article last month saying we’re all smiles at Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS). Well, it’s infectious! Here we are again with Clive Blakely (our Workshop Manager) having a laugh with Una Cairns (President of the Indoor Bowls Club). ‘The Shed’ was commissioned recently to make new ball retrieval sticks and stands –thanks go to shed member Graeme Clarke for his efforts here. And elsewhere in the community, shed members Keith Gall and Rob Norris have been busy sanding and painting tables at Cathy House. Whilst in Anzac Memorial Park, the Bofors Gun has been given a fresher and brighter look by shed members Rob, Fernando, Tony and Robert. We’re still smiling!

SHINING A LIGHT ON THE COOLOOLA COAST

WELCOME AGAIN to another DroughtRunners report. August has been a steady month, with our continuing work with the homeless in Gympie and with Blaze-Aid workers in the Goomeri-Murgon area. We have sent $1000 to Gympie and $1000 to Goomeri since last report. All our funds at present are going into food supplies to feed those I have mentioned.Imustthank the following for donations: The Tin Can Bay Dragon Boat club for a wonderful donation after helping at their regatta in very trying conditions in July. Bill Neil in Tin Can Bay for his wonderful homemade wooden toys that have gone this time to the flooded homeless children in Gympie. The Big 4 at Carlo Point continues to fill our bulk bags with 10 cent returns along with Wolf Rock Dive, Josh Sommerville and the many others that fill our bins at 10 Tingira Close in Rainbow. To those that donated food items including Ace Wholesalers a big thankyou. To all at Tin Can Bay that continue to donate to Wayne Kerle many thanks for your continued support at the Bay Auto sorting station. Our donation tins at Mitchell’s Fruit & Veg, Tin Can Bay Bakery, Ross Creek, Snack Shack, Shell Rainbow Beach, and others help keep us going. We will be selling goods at the Rainbow Beach Markets in early September to raise more funds. Some of the wonderful toys sent to children in Gympie who lost their homes in the floods.

TCBCAMS thanks Gympie Regional Council for funds obtained through a grant which have enabled the purchase of our new state-of-the-art bandsaw. We now boast a very wellequipped shed for members to use – why not inspect our facilities next time you’re in Tin Can Bay. We’re open 9am-12noon weekdays, with Tuesdays and Thursdays dedicated to Men Only days. OR come to our Shed Shop Sale Days – third Saturday of the month. Always bargains to be found! Tin Can Bay Community & Men’s Shed is in Amity Place (behind City Farm) in Tin Can Bay. We can be contacted on 0491 175 038. Check out our brand new bandsaw purchased recently with grant funds from Council Clive and Una are all smiles while demonstrating the Indoor Bowls Club’s new ball retrieval sticks made by The Shed

Despite a rainy start, over 30 people from around southeast Queensland gathered at the Rainbow Beach Community Hall on 6 August. Cr Jess Milne opened the event with fitting poetry and Representativeshumour.from sponsoring Bendigo Bank launched the booklet, Cooloola Wildflowers and Walks. Rae Gâté recognised its benefits to the community since publishing a year ago.Linda Tabe gave an overview of the ecology and diversity of the Cooloola area, followed by artist Sue Davis’ presentation about the efforts of writer/poet Judith Wright and artist Kathleen MacArthur in saving the Cooloola Wilderness from development.Smallgroups of people were led on walks in the morning and afternoon. The booklet was helpful in finding locations and to help identify the variety of plants with blossoms of gold, pink, and lavender. Artists Sue Davis and Joolie Gibbs had their art and merchandise displayed. Lunch prepared by local business Soul Food was well-appreciated, and the visitors to Rainbow Beach enjoyed delectable dinner at Quay Carlo. On Sunday, the event was held in the rural corner of Cooloola Cove. Participants were guided around several homes where native wallum habitat has been preserved. Joolie and Sue demonstrated techniques using botanical inks and inspiration from nature to create our own artwork.

Congrats Lorraine, Trish, and Rowena and thank you to Linda from Pomona who filled in for Ann. We do love the shiny medals. Tin Can Bay Ladies Open is drawing near and will have been played by the time of publication (end of August). Pamela Gorey IN MID-AUGUST the Cooloola Dragon Boat Club travelled north to the Town of 1770 to compete in the final dragon boat regatta of the Wide Bay Dragon boat race series. The whole team had a great weekend but unfortunately there was no ‘bling’ to bring home. The team did paddle very well and were in the hunt for most of the races but were often ‘pipped at the post’. The overall honours for the 2022 Wide Bay Series went to the 1770 team who performed very well over this event and the previous three events at Bundaberg, Tin Can Bay, and Hervey Bay. The Cooloola Dragons congratulate them on a great season’s performance. 1770 had organised a great event and as well as the racing there was fantastic entertainment by a group of about 15 ukulele musicians. It is quite spectacular to see and hear 15 ukulele musicians performing together. This was very much enjoyed and appreciated by competitors and spectators. Also to add to the event 1770 had some wonderful raffles which some of our girls were lucky enough to win. Then to finish off a great weekend of competition and friendship, the Cooloola Dragons team embarked on the LARC (Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo vessel) for a couple

The Tin Can Bay Ladies Triples was won by Lorraine, Trish, and Rowena against a fighting Kerrie, Sandra, and Susan. Good to see Beryl out and about again, enjoy your holiday and we look forward to your return. Ann has taken a little break and will return refreshed and ready for the next challenge. New uniforms will be decided on at the next meeting, so see Ann and have your say. Please if you have some bowls photos to publish please get them to Rowena by the 16th of each month and include names. Good luck on the greens - go Tin Can Bay! of hours of thrills. The LARC is a military amphibious supply vessel and this one is named after Dr Daniel Solander.Altogether it was another wonderful weekend of spirited competition, relaxation, camaraderie, and friendships.Everyone is welcome to come and try out paddling on Thursdays and Sundays with the Cooloola Dragon BoatCallClub.Sandra on 0402 352 756 for more information on becoming a Cooloola Dragon. Get yourself down to the Golf Club

SEVERAL GOLFING days were missed again in August but the Men are slowly managing to get their matchplay games completed. The Vets Host days, which were postponed, have now been rescheduled for later in the year. The Men are looking forward to their trips away and also other clubs visiting us. The Ladies championships were played in August , and I should have some results for next month’s Community News. The 2022 Ladies Open Day is being held on 9 September and we are hoping the weather will be kind to us as we have a fairly big field booked to join us for this annual event. As there have been a lot of housing sales in the area there must be plenty of men and ladies who would like to join our Golf Club. Anyone wishing to become a member can call into the Country Club front desk and ask the staff to help with the appropriate application forms. The Vets play on Tuesday of each week. Ladies Day is Wednesday. Thursday and Friday are nine-hole competitions, and Saturday and Sunday competitions are open to all members.Anyperson with a Golf Australia Handicap can join our competitions. Bookings can be made on 0409 727 577 or by coming into the Pro Shop where staff can assist. Our resident Professional James has a wide range of golf equipment, clothing, etc for sale. James is also a teaching Golf Professional and can help new and advanced players with lessons. The Pro Shop staff can assist by taking bookings over the phone or at the Pro Shop counter . We look forward to seeing new members on the course.

Every Saturday morning walkers and runners participate over a set 5km course. Would you like to see Parkrun in Tin Can Bay? For this to happen there needs to be a core group of people willing to be volunteers to help establish and then run the event in Tin Can Bay. So, if you or anyone you know would be interested in making this happen then contact Greg Garner on 0488 601 750 or Dan Stewart on 0499 081 404. They will then organise a meeting of interested parties to further outline what is needed in order for Parkrun to come to Tin Can Bay. In the meantime, if you want to find out more information about Parkrun go to www.parkrun.com.au Greg Garner and Dan Stewart are looking for a Parkrun crew - is that you?

I mentioned in our August article that the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) sponsored workshops would have been finalized before the article was published so I have included some shots from the last event held for participants 18+. This was an enjoyable day with 20 people in attendance, albeit it was a very cold day at Norman Point. Tight lines everyone –Cheers. Get Ready and Stay Get Ready Queensland is a year-round program helping all Queenslanders prepare for natural disasters. Being prepared before a disaster hits could be the difference between staying safe or putting yourself and those you love in danger. With the weather patterns this year it is important to not only get ready but to stay ready. Have you done the three? 1. Understand your risks 2. Prepare a household plan 3. Pack emergency kit. For more information and tips go to www. getready.qld.gov.au if there is a disaster log onto the Gympie Disaster Dashboard found on the Gympie Regional Council website homepage.

APOPULAR tree native to South East Queensland, also known as Golden Penda, it grows from 5 - 10 metres. It thrives in loamy to sandy loam soils that are well drained. Good for frost-free sunny positions. Trusses of golden flowers are borne towards the ends of branches in summer and autumn and are good for nectar feeding wildlife. Foliage is attractive when the tree is not flowering with leaves being large and glossy. Will respond to pruning.Thistree is now available in dwarf form growing from 3 - 4 metres tall and 1 - 2 metres wide.

WHAT A RARE treat it is to see an owl during the day. This month we are highlighting the splendid southern boobook, a nocturnal bird you may get lucky enough to spot during the day if its roost among dense foliage or in a hollow is visible, or if smaller birds screeching and squawking draw your attention to its presence. At night, this owl will hunt insects, small mammals, and small birds, using its incredible eyesight. The southern boobook (known in some regions as the mopoke), takes the record for Australia’s smallest and most common owl, and can be identified by its plumage, which is dark chocolate-brown above and rufous-brown below, with colourful streaks and spotted with white. The facial disc is dark brown, and its large yellow eyes have a stare that is hypnotising.Thesouthern boobook will detect most of its prey by listening and watching from a high perch. Once the owl senses some flying prey, such as moths and small bats, the owl swoops in and snatches the meal mid-flight. If the owl detects a ground-dwelling prey, it makes the most of its talons andThepounces.southern boobook usually makes a nest in a tree hollow, lined with wood shavings, leaves and small

If you do not wish to collect your free trees for rate notices, you might consider asking the City Farm staff to put them aside for the Tin Can Bay or Rainbow Beach schools. They would be appreciated. Cooloola City Farm Nursery is located opposite the Community Centre at 17 Amity Place off Tin Can Bay Road. Opening Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays 8.00am-3.00pm. Learning Community Since the start of Term 3, our young people have enjoyed some wonderful opportunities out and about in Rainbow Beach and further afield. One of the highlights was a bike ride from the Community Centre to the Breeze Caravan Park at Carlo Point where the children had a great time on the jumping pillow and lunch at the new indoor camp kitchen. Tennis has been another fun activity and we would like to thank the Sports Club for allowing us to use their facilities at no charge. A recent wildflower walk near Bombala Crescent was a wonderful opportunity to see how many wildflowers were scattered through the bush that flourish during August and September.

Money raised from recycling the drink containers will assist Cooloola Coastcare to continue their vital work of caring for the turtles that come ashore at Rainbow Beach to lay their eggs. Our young people have been designing eye-catching flyers to hand out to local businesses asking them to save their bottle lids that will become part of the sculpture.

The Cooloola Wildflowers booklet created by Cooloola Coastcare can be purchased from the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and will show you where the best walks are. A visit by Councillor Jess Milne was very enlightening as she explained her role on the Gympie Council and the responsibilities of the different levels of government. She is also an excellent storyteller! We were finally able to visit Cooloola Berries after all the rain and loved learning how to grow this delectable fruit during our farm tour with Jason –the strawberry ice creams were great too!Curtis and Gareth from the Gympie Library were impressed with how the older children worked with the younger ones learning how to master robotics.Wehave an exciting project happening in collaboration with Cooloola Coastcare where we are creating a life-size wire sculpture of a turtle that will be decorated with coloured bottle lids. With Council’s permission, we are hoping to place the sculpture and two recycling garbage bins on the Rainbow Beach foreshore to encourage tourists and locals to recycle their drink containers.

The Learning Community families are looking forward to a three-day/ two-night camping trip to K’gari in October, staying at the Beachcamp Retreat at Eurong Village.

There will be around 55 adults and children in the group, with several families new to the area visiting the island for the first time. It will be a wonderful learning experience for everyone with the opportunity to spend time with local Parks & Wildlife rangers high on the list of possible activities.

There is often a good selection of products from Woolworths Cooloola that have been a welcome addition to the items from Foodbank that often come in catering size ensuring they will last for a while. Demand has dropped off a little over the past few weeks, so we are going to trial distributing the hampers every fortnight instead of every week. To keep up with when they are available, please like our Facebook page – Rainbow Beach Community Pantry – and we will remind you in the week before delivery. Turtle Project flyers created by Miah, Josie, & Zarya. Keep an eye out for them around town!

Foodbank Qld has continued to provide locals with a great variety of items in their $10 hampers that are distributed on Thursdays from the Rainbow Beach Community Centre carOurpark.team of willing helpers work hard unpacking the pallet brought down by Rainbow Beach Transport (free of charge) as quickly as possible.
