Dive into the Magic of One Remarkable Reef

FAMILIES ACROSS the region are invited to embark on an enchanting journey with the launch of the Gympie Regional Libraries First 5 Forever Story Walk, featuring Kellie Byrnes’ captivating children’s book, ‘One Remarkable Reef’.

A wonderful blend of nature, storytelling, and outdoor adventure, promoting early literacy and togetherness. Each page is displayed on standalone signboards, placed at intervals along Lawrie Hanson Park, Rainbow Beach. Turning a simple walk into a progressive storytelling experience.

‘One Remarkable Reef’, is vibrantly illustrated by Rachel Tribout and explores the diverse

marine life found in Queensland reefs. The book encourages young readers to appreciate the beauty of our ocean while learning about the reef’s most threatened creatures.

IS YOUR YOUNG one into nature? Do they want to learn more about native animals and biodiversity? Then register them for a new YAP Project called Boost Biodiversity. The project will be focused around increasing habitat, food sources, and nesting options for native animals and insects. The project will involve observation and survey of existing plants, animals, insects, and structures then research and planning into what would enhance and expand these before implementing some improvements such as nesting boxes, planting, and habitat rehabilitation.

Suitable for ages over 8 and the project will involve a series of sessions that will be scheduled to suit those interested. To register please contact Jess Milne on 0411 218 254 or email cooloolacoastyap@ gmail.com as there are limited places.

Cooloola Coastcare Threatened Species Survey

COOLOOLA COASTCARE members were joined by volunteers from the region recently to conduct a survey of endangered plants in the local area. We are so lucky to live amongst the exuberant floral biodiversity of Cooloola!

The sandy soils may present a challenge for gardeners trying to grow exotic flowers and veggies, but our local flora have had many thousands of years to adapt to the low nutrients and poor drainage of the Wallum country.

Every spring, the bush comes alive with yellows, then pinks, then whites, as the season progresses. A selection of the region’s most visible heath wildflowers are described in Cooloola Coastcare’s ‘Cooloola Wildflowers and Walks’ booklet.

A second edition of the booklet, containing expanded descriptions, and 8 more plants, will be available soon.

All native plants are protected against collection from the wild, but many can be purchased from the Cooloola City Farm Native Nursery to beautify gardens, and provide food and shelter for birds.

Although some local plant species are abundant

and widespread, some are threatened, mainly by development, land-clearing, and competition from invasive weeds. The recent, Queensland Government-funded survey has enabled us to understand more about the distribution of threatened species in the area, so that they can be protected from further decline.

Cooloola Coastcare gratefully acknowledges support from the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, Community Sustainability Action - Threatened Species Recovery grant program, as well as the collaboration of The Queensland Herbarium, Gympie Regional Council, Department of Defence, and Red Ash Consulting, Bundaberg.

Honouring our remarkable local Seniors

NOMINATIONS ARE now officially open for the 2023 Senior Citizen of the Year Awards. These awards honour and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contributions of senior members of our community who have made a positive impact through their dedication, service, and leadership.

Gympie Regional Council Mayor, Glen Hartwig, warmly encourages community members to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by their senior neighbours and consider nominating them an award.

“Every single day our senior community members generously dedicate their time and

talents, selflessly giving back to the community in many ways. Their dedication and commitment are truly admirable, and their invaluable contributions often go unnoticed,” Mayor Hartwig said.

“These awards are a great opportunity to shine the spotlight on key individuals and the positive contributions they make in our community. If you are aware of someone whose efforts deserve recognition, we kindly encourage you to consider nominating them.”

The Senior Citizen of the Year Awards coincide with Seniors Month in October and form part of a month-long celebration of seniors in the local community, and across Queensland.

Nominations for the Senior Citizen of the Year Awards are open to individuals aged 60 or above who have made notable contributions to the local community within the last 12 months.

For further details and to access nomination forms, visit: www.gympie.qld.gov.au/seniors.

Nominations close Sunday, 22 October 2023.

Winners will be announced at Picnic in the Park held on Grandparents Day, Sunday 29 October 2023 in Memorial Park, Gympie from 10am – 12pm. Bring a picnic and come along and celebrate.

Seniors Get a Healthy Dose of ‘Old’s Cool’

THE OLD’S COOL – Health Matters project will be bringing a series of free pop-up health clinics and community education workshops to Gympie, Tin Can Bay, Imbil, and Kilkivan in October, for Senior’s month.

The workshops and clinics bring together academic expertise and student engagement from the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Healthy Ageing Hub (based at its Gympie campus), connections through Gympie Community Place, and insights from healthcare professionals from One Bridge. Funding for this project has been provided by Gympie Regional Council.

Each pop-up clinic will provide free health assessments by a registered nurse from One

Bridge and health information from UniSC students. Local service providers will also be in attendance to assist in understanding health options, such as how to navigate mainstream health services and My Aged Care.

The Kilkivan and Imbil events will also provide community education workshops. Topics may include how to maintain good brain health, dealing with grief, and/or how to stay independent and live at home for longer.

Following on from Senior’s month, community education workshops will be held in Gympie and Tin Can Bay in November. Further details on these workshops will be provided in the coming weeks.

Event dates and locations:

Gympie: Wednesday 11 October, 10.30am-3.30pm Gympie Community Place, 18 Excelsior Road.

Kilkivan: Wednesday 18 October, 11am-3pm Kilkivan Public Hall, 31 Bligh Street.

Imbil: Wednesday 25 October, 10.30am-3.30pm Imbil Hall, 14 Edward Street.

Tin Can Bay: Thursday 26 October, 11am-3pm RSL Hall, 45 Gympie Road.

These events are focused on older residents. However, we welcome anyone that would like to attend.

Good Shepherd Turns30

HAPPY 30TH BIRTHDAY to the Good Shepherd Church! A dedicated service taken by the present minister Rev. Shaji Joseph, past minister Rev. Kev Lewis and L.A. Beris Trainer was held to celebrate this milestone.

Lyn Bleakley kindly supplied a brief history of Rainbow Beach’s first church:

“Before mid 1993 the Anglican and Uniting Church congregations were worshipping in the Sports and Recreation Club on alternate Sundays with a minister from the St Peters’ Parish and a pastor from the Uniting Church Both had to travel out from Gympie each Sunday.

After some time the Uniting Church could not manage to send a pastor every Sunday. The two congregations decided to stay together and pray together. At the same time the Catholic congregation was worshipping weekly at a private residence and subsequently in the dining room of the local hotel/ motel.

As Sunday trading at the Club increased this could no longer continue so the Anglican/Uniting group moved out to conduct their Sunday services in a tiny, ex-Forestry Dept hut. At this stage Rainbow Beach had less than 100 permanent residents, but at holiday times we had many thousands of visitors enjoying our ideal beach and camping facilities; good fishing as well in those days.

Early in 1993 one of our Gympie church members saw an advertisement offering a 1958-built decommissioned church to a needy developing Parish in the Brisbane Diocese. St Peter’s Parish Gympie proved to be the most needy for our fast growing Cooloola Coast region.

So in May 1993 the old church was cut in half to be transported to the present Carlo Road site.

A mighty effort and transformation in 9 weeks accomplished by the generosity of many in the community (whether religious or not) with their time, talents and enthusiasm working together.

Until the Catholic Church was built, we provided a centre of worship for the Anglican, Uniting, and Catholic congregations. In the past it has at times also provided for Baptist and AOG congregations and we welcome any recognized Christian Groups to join our community effort and partake in our ecumenical vision.

With fundraising and donations our Rainbow Beach Church is free of debt and still proving to be a boon to all congregations and the community as a whole. It continues to be a place for family worship and fellowship.”

Referendum Polling Stations

CIRS WERE approached earlier this year by the Australian Electoral Commission with regards to using the hall as a polling station for the upcoming vote on the referendum.

This would have meant approx. $1200 total hall hire income, with cleaning and recycling charges. The

entire Community Centre would be closed off for security reasons so no hall, CIRS office, kitchen, or toilets access for the public from Friday to Monday.

Unfortunately, the date ended up falling on 14 October - our monthly market and free film night weekend.

Given that the amount of income from Markets and AEC was similar, we refused the AEC offer and instead will support our loyal market stallholders who would have missed out on their market income.

Polling Station locations had not been finalised at time of writing,

however, Postal Voting will be available.

If you have changed address, you may want to update your details on the electoral roll and find out about postal voting on the AEC website: www.aec.gov.au/referendums/vote/ postal-voting.html

Free Film Night - September Free Film Night - October

OUR COOLAFLIX free film for October will be the iconic 1971 Australian surf film Morning of the Earth (Remastered).

It was the first Australian movie soundtrack to win Album of the Year, and the surf footage is timeless.

COOLOOLA COAST Women and Business convenor Elisa Seul was thrilled with the response when CCWAB hosted our CoolaFlix free film for September.

The film they chose was Under Cover, an Australian documentary about the journey of nine older women

into homelessness. Following the screening, Elisa facilitated a World Cafe event with five tables providing feedback and suggestions on local solutions to social factors such as the current housing crisis.

Impact Films kindly provided the film free of charge, thanks to financial support they received from accommodation giants Quest Apartments.

Warning: this film is not rated but Parental Guidance is recommended for children under 15 years of age. It contains beach nudity, drug use (bongs) and animal cruelty (a cock fight in Bali). These scenes are short and contextual, given the early 1970s relaxed film censorship laws, and social and cultural standards at that time.

Don’t miss this film - it explains so much about surf culture and why so many Australians now in their sixties and seventies still aspire to live a free and simple lifestyle on the coast.

CoolaFlix film nights are free entry thanks to a grant from FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal).

Host group on 14 October will be Cooloola Coastcare. More details on start time, food, bar, other fundraising, to follow as availablekeep an eye on Facebook.

Rainbow Beach School P&C News

TERM 3 IS OFFICIALLY done and dusted, and the students and staff are enjoying a well-earned break.

Students and teachers alike have been working tirelessly this term and we are very proud of all that the students have achieved. With only one term to go we are all left pondering how quickly the year has passed us by already. A few weeks ago, the students all participated in a craft activity for Father’s Day which had them all decorating glass jars with pictures and messages to their loved ones which were then filled with all the sweet treats Dads, Grandfathers and carers could want.

The P&C has also been busy finalising the application for the Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program, and we are on the home straight. We are excited to finalise the last part of the application and formally announce the positions vacant!

Rainbow Beach OSHC is committed to providing a quality care service by offering a friendly, happy, rich, and engaging environment to support children and families living and working on the Cooloola Coast. We believe in providing a comfortable, safe and nurturing space for all children regardless of gender, age, background, additional needs, practices and beliefs.

To support this, we are looking for educators / carers for our OSHC program which will run before and after school, Monday – Friday and Vacation care during the school holidays. The positions include a Centre Co-ordinator along with Educators / Carers. The role descriptions can be found in the position’s vacant advertisement. We anticipate a start in 2023 pending final approval of the application process.

If you are interested in the possibility of joining our program or are looking to develop a career in this area, please contact us at rainbowbeachpc@ gmail.com or 07 5486 9333. We look forward to hearing from you. We wish all our families a safe and enjoyable School Holidays, and we look forward to seeing you all again in Term 4!

We are very excited for many other events we have coming up so be sure to keep up to date with any news from the P&C on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/PandCRainbowBeach.

Join me howling at the Moon

Workshop Wonders at TCBCAMS

TIN CAN BAY Community and Men’s Shed (TCBCAMS) held stained glass work/copper foiling and mosaic workshops in September. Participants were able to complete their projects and take them home.

A couple of karaoke regulars getting in some practice for Howling at the Moon.

AS I WALK IN the door I notice Brian Smith breasting the RSL Sub Branch bar, a can of his favourite Guinness in his hand.

Brian originated from Scotland and has an accent as wide as his broad brimmed hat. He lives on his yacht ‘Saskia’ off Tin Can Bay and is a great supporter of our RSL when he’s in port and the tides are right.

I say, “Hey mate, are you up to a bit of Howling at the Moon on 28 October?” Brian looks at me like my mind has gone and says, “What are you on about Roscoe?”

So I explained:

“The Tin Can Bay RSL is holding a ‘Howling at the Moon’ spit roast dinner and Open Mike night on Saturday 28 October.

“We carve at 6pm, with tickets $30 for adults and $15 for kids 4 – 12 and proceeds go to the Support Veterans Care Association.

“We need great musicians like yourself to get up and sing a few songs.”

Brian said, “Well that sounds fine as long as I can get up with my guitar and sing my choice of songs. It’s great to see the proceeds go to such a tremendous cause.”

“Brian you’re on,” I say. “I might even get up and have a sing and a dance myself!”

This is sure to be a hoot, with the entertainment facilitated by Buzz Karaoke so come along for a fun night of great food and good music. Book early with Gail or Darah, 3pm – 6pm Tuesday to Sunday, phone 5486 2110.

SUNDAY 10 September was a great celebration at the Tin Can Bay Country Club, combining the second anniversary of the Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers (CCWW) with the sixth anniversary of the One Step at a Time Tin Can Bay Heart Foundation Walking groups, as well as the 80th Birthday of Albert McAlister.

Albert was “blown away” by the gathering’s reaction upon his arrival: the blowing of the party poppers and whistles, everyone singing Happy Birthday and the surprise of seeing family members and friends, including ex-neighbours Susan and Bob Spencer, who all had travelled to Tïn Can Bay for the occasion.

Sixty gathered to honour Albert, and to celebrate our milestones. Thank you to Jamie and staff for your assistance in making our day enjoyable.

Huge thanks to Tina and James

Scullion for decorating the tables and windows so artistically with the red and white theme and lots of hearts.

Lots to celebrate for Walkers! Something for everyone at Coolabay Choir

A big thank you to Arthur, Tin Can Bay Bakery for the light-as-a-feather chocolate sponge iced Happy Birthday cake, delectably delicious.

Great to watch the slideshow of our Heart Foundation Walking photos compiled by Kristine and Ralph Pack, thank you. A reminder of how much we have grown these past few years. Membership of our combined HF Walking groups on the Cooloola Coast now is seventy.

Welcome to another three new members, Sally, Marilyn, and Tamar into our CCWW Walking group. Check out the website www. mymarathon.com.au:

“A marathon effort to look after Australian hearts. We all know or love someone who has been impacted by heart disease. Around 50 lives are lost each day in Australia due to coronary heart disease, more than any other cause, and it has a devastating impact on the families left behind.

“Now there’s something everybody can do to help. The Heart Foundation’s MyMarathon is your

opportunity to raise funds for heart disease research that will help save lives, while challenging yourself to walk or run 42.2 km (or more) over hours, days or weeks during October. You can do it on your own, or as part of a team with friends or colleagues.”

I wonder if there’s anyone, an individual or group, on the Cooloola Coast ready to take up this challenge?

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, “One Step at a Time TCB” departs Tin Can Bay Bakery - the early group at 6.30am, the later group at 7am. Cooloola Cove Wheelie Walkers meet by 8.30am Mondays and Fridays at the bus shelter on Nautilus Drive outside the Cooloola Cove Shopping Centre. Contact Judy Kiddle in Cooloola Cove, 07 5486 2181 or myself on 0400 756 615. Walk Yourself Happy!

COOLABAY CHOIR meets for an hour on Wednesdays, 3pm in the Cooloola Cove Veterans and Community Hall, to enjoy singing a wide range of songs: old, new, world, rounds, harmonies, and sing-along...something for everyone!

We are keen to welcome new members, and open to all-comers, as there is no need to have prior knowledge of how to read music. Singing is fun, good for the mind and soul.

Some of us are lucky to have the opportunity of enjoying the sounds of a much larger choir, for example, Oriana, when it’s performing in Gympie, at St Patrick’s Catholic Church, and on the Sunshine Coast. Oriana Choir meets and practises in Buderim on Thursday evenings.

Next month at St Patrick’s, Gympie, we can be part of the audience of the “Simply Classical” Concert. We look forward to items performed by the Cooloola Community Orchestra and the Gympie Strings, maybe the James Nash Choir too.

For information about joining our Choir here on the Cooloola Coast, contact Maggie, 0400 756 615, Maggie1Travers@gmail.com

Droughtrunners Report

Tony Stewart - 0408 767 930

JUST A SMALL report as we are only helping feed the homeless in Gympie which is controlled by Marlene Owen and her trusty helpers. It’s an evening meal for around 30 with no fixed address.

This month we donated $1500 to help. There have been NO other SOSs sent out to us for help which is rather pleasing for a change.

Again many thanks to Wayne Kerle who coordinates our bottle and can collections. The Big 4 at Carlo Point where a lot of our income is derived, the Watts family, Carlos, and all that deliver to our bins at 10 Tingira Close: thank you to all too.

To all in Tin Can Bay many thanks for helping Wayne including Bay Auto. We know of many 10c returns going to landfill at the BP, and we can’t possibly do anymore, so hopefully an organisation like the school could sort there and make $$ for a good cause. We will have a stand here in early

October at the Rainbow Markets to raise funds. There will be some great kids wooden toys to fill the Christmas stocking, some crockery, and much more. Suncoast Leisure Furniture will also have a couple of new timber tables and these demo models will be discounted.

This will be the last call to get your stories and pics in by Wednesday 11 October.

This publication is really filling fast with 230 of 300 pages filled by midSeptember so we would hate to see you miss out.

We need to get this out by Christmas for sale, with proceeds going to a charity; maybe Little Haven, Men’s Health etc but to be decided by contributors.

Contact Tony Stewart 0408 767 930; rainbowfishing33@gmail.com Plenty of handmade wooden toys will be for sale at our stall at this month’s markets.

COOLOOLA COAST PROBUS Club members have been enjoying life with lots of fun, with more to come.

In August we joined host club Gympie, with members of Maryborough Combined and Gympie Widgee Clubs, for a Bowls and Games Day which was held at the Tin Can Bay Country Club. This is an annual event.

Following morning tea we had the choice of playing outdoor bowls or games (Scrabble, RummyO or Canasta). It was most enjoyable playing with members of other clubs.

This was followed by lunch and a trivia session in the afternoon.

September meeting guest speaker was Felicia Long, Events Coordinator for Gympie Regional Council who spoke about Library services –including e-books and magazines, technical help, and events conducted through all six branches.

Two new programs now at Tin Can Bay Library – Tinny Chat for coffee and chat and Armchair Traveller to share your travel experiences.

We are looking forward to upcoming events – lunch at Sublime Farm/ Brewery with a free $25 main course thanks to funding from Gympie Regional Council Community Grants. It will be a wonderful occasion at this country venue.

To celebrate Seniors Month and Probus Month In October we are holding the following events:

Local seniors are invited to book and join us for the FREE Games Day and Sausage Sizzle to be held at the Crab Creek picnic area commencing at 10.30am on Saturday 7 October.

To assist with catering, seniors are invited to book by contacting Jo on 0428 762 572 or Kaye on 0421 648 129.

On Saturday 21 October, we are offering a FREE Dolphin Ferry Cruise leaving at 10.30am and returning at 12 noon. We then invite everyone to join us at the Country Club for lunch (at your own cost).

For information, phone Jo or Kaye. This event is being supported by the Queensland Government and COTA. Meetings are held on each second Monday of the month at 2pm at the Sandcastle Motel in Tin Can Bay and include a guest speaker and a break for afternoon tea and a chat.

For details contact our President, Katrina on 0407 637 691 or Secretary, Kaye at cooloolaprobus@gmail.com

Tin Can Bay P-10 State School

Wildlife HQ Zoo Sea Life Aquarium

The Wildlife HQ Zoo became a bustling hub of enthusiasm on 17 August, as the Year 1 students embarked on an unforgettable excursion.

For many students it was the opportunity to have an up-close encounter with the animals.

The highlights of the day included patting the frilled neck lizard and holding an albino python.

Students witnessed first-hand the playful antics of the monkeys and the meerkats playing peek-a-boo through the windows.

Wildlife HQ Zoo on the Sunshine Coast was an incredible excursion opportunity for the Year 1 students and, I’m sure, one they will never forget.

P.A.R.T.Y Excursion

The Year 10 students recently embarked on an informative journey to Gympie Hospital as part of the Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma In Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) Program.

P.A.R.T.Y. is an in-hospital injury prevention program run state-wide across many Queensland Hospitals aimed at providing teenagers with information about trauma that will enable them to recognise potential injury-producing situations, make prevention-oriented choices, and adopt behaviours that minimise unnecessary risk.

The Tin Can Bay Prep students had the best day ever at Sea Life Aquarium! The excursion was organised to complement their science unit, providing an immersive learning experience.

They explored eleven fun and interactive animal zones across three levels, including Little Blue Penguins, Tidal Touch Pool, Seahorse Sanctuary, Jellyfish Kingdom, and clever seals at the Seal Show.

The highlight of the excursion was undoubtedly the eighty-metre ocean tunnel where the sharks glided past and the stingrays soared overhead. It was certainly a thrill!

At the end of the day, many smiles, conversations and jaw dropping moments were shared by all creating memories lasting a lifetime.

This excursion, designed to foster positive decision-making, exposed them to a spectrum of activities. From understanding responsible drinking and driving safety to experiencing the effects of alcohol with goggles, the day was rich in learning.

The students then learned about an autopsy process and identification, legal implications, practised CPR, and delved into trauma injuries and emergency room procedures.

The students also had the privilege to hear

from Ben, a compelling speaker who shared his personal journey.

Ben’s powerful story of ending up in a wheelchair due to drinking resonated deeply. He urged the students to find equilibrium between their freedom and responsibilities.

This additional perspective highlighted the importance of making informed choices, reinforcing the excursion’s mission to guide our Year 10 students toward positive decision making for their present and future.

Take a deep breath Tin Can Bay, we have a very busy month ahead. Welcome to our new members, please see one of the committee if you have any questions or if you would like to assist with any of the events.

Invitation Day, being held on the first Tuesday in October, will be a Memorial Day for Beryl Murray with all monies going to Palliative Care, a service that was very close to Beryl’s heart. It’s just not the same without Beryl and we all think of her with the fondest memories…our little pocket rocket.

Once again, please check the notice boards and get involved. Bring it on.

Sailors get that sinking feeling

WITH QUITE a few people away on other adventures only seven boats were rigged to race in the blustery SE winds and with wind against tide to the windward mark it made for a challenging sail. The deck crew watched the ‘Dash to the Start’ in front of the club house whilst having lunch.

One Flying Fifteen only made it past the port marker at the creek entrance when a loud bang put an end to their race. The rope between the top of the jib and the halyard snapped causing a falling down jib and the boat to limp home with a very flappy sail.

The next to retreat home was the skiff, before it sunk, which was wallowing with about 40 litres of water in the hull, leaking in through the centreboard casing.

The Laser sailor having survived the first race decided that the last leg upwind on the second race was too much and with discretion sailed home. The remaining four boats completed the

Ghostly Gatherings

There will be ghostly gatherings on Friday 27 October in preparation for Halloween during the day and evening. Another themed event, so come dressed as your favourite spooky, scary thing (optional). On the menu will be Vampire vitals, Spooky spuds and Witch’s brew. Come and enjoy the spirit!

course with minor breakages and injuries but all was well back at the clubhouse with a drink and sausage sizzle and a tale or two to tell.

THE OFFICIAL launch of the Wes Mitchell Park parkrun in late July had 112 participants complete the 5km course along the Tin Can Bay foreshore, and has continued to prove popular. Parkrun has a large following with people coming from far and wide to experience courses while enjoying a stay in the local area.

If you would like to join this worldwide movement then register for free on the parkrun website then pop along to an event any Saturday morning.

The Wes Mitchell Park parkrun sets off at 7am so make sure you get there by 6.45am for the induction and to warm up. Wes Mitchell Park is opposite the library in Tin Can Bay.

And they’re off! Parkrun got off to a cracking start at its launch in July.

AS PART OF THE Sunshine Coast and South Burnett District Golf Association which includes Glasshouse Mtns, the 2023 Tin Can Bay Junior Open was held on Sunday 10 September 2023. The tournament was open to players from the district who are under 18 years of age.

It is with great delight that I advise of the outstanding performances of our own Oakley Hall and Charlotte Rensonnet.

Oakley was the gross score winner on the day with a very fine score of 75. Yep, that’s three over par for the entire course off the stick. The young man also finished with a very neat 70 nett.

I know quite a few oldies who could only dream of such a score, including me. I’m sure both Aaron and Shona are chuffed at Oakley’s win.

Charlotte flew the banner for the Tin Can Bay Ladies. Nine-year-old Charlotte played in Division Two and came home with a best nett score of 72 and a win. Don’t we all wish? I bet Adam is one very proud dad.

They both qualify for the Frank Schmidt Cup which is played at Noosa Springs in November. A big congrats to you two from all the members.

Please congratulate and encourage the pair when you spot them at the club.

Our Ladies held their own annual Open Day on 8 September 2023. The ever-reliable Carolyn Gamble took Division One honours with a fine 39 Stableford points. Elizabeth Price had a nifty 37 for second and Lyn Bade had a close one with 35 to take third on countback.

In Division Two the winner, D. Cronin, was from Caloundra and our two ladies, Diedre Henderson and Di Oxton fought out second and third on countback 35’s. Not to be outdone, Heather Smith from Tin Can Bay scored a massive 41 points to get the chocolates in Division Three.

C. Eggins from Headland Golf Club took second place with 39 and J. Fitzgerald nailed down third place with 35. The Ladies Open day had many other prize recipients, so a huge congrats to the winners, players and organisers for such an enjoyable day.

On 7 October 2023 the Tin Can Bay Country Club Golf Club will hold the annual Mens Open day. This will be the 48th time this event has been run. It is hoped that the weather gods will look after us on the day making it a success.

The time that is left for this year will not ease up as far as golfing goes. By the time this goes to print we will have had the Country Club AGM and our own Golf Club AGM in November.

The watering system is progressing well with holes two through to eight completed. It is expected that the front nine will be completed by October. The works are going well with very little disruption to the golf.

Social Golf has also increased and we are welcoming new members joining each month. With school holidays upon us we saw an influx of visitors to the area and golf is one of the sought after activities.

On 5 October 2023 Barry and Anne Hudson will be holding their annual Golf and Bowls Day. The $5 entry fee gets you 9 holes of Golf followed by a BBQ lunch then 10 Ends of Lawn Bowls. It is a fun day for Club members and visitors alike with lots of frivolity and banter to mix with beer and wine. Just get your names down on the sheet in the Club kiosk to get a start.

It’s a great day and a lot of fun. Don’t forget we have a courtesy bus to ferry you back home afterwards (local to the area).

With all the above and much more to come, it’s great to play at the Bay.

As such I pass on our sincere thanks to the following:

Now for a brief summary of what happened in September. It was a busy one for the club, we ran our usual monthly competition and presentation plus our mid-month

2-day event; in addition we hosted the Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club at our club house for a BBQ and a friendly casting competition.

The casting competition was held instead of a fishing competition due to the bad weather.

Our club won the casting competition which was a bit of redemption for us after our disastrous performance last year in the fishing competition.

Ok we may have had the upper hand on Hervey Bay as we’ve been running this type of event for a few months now, and we didn’t tell them about the event until the day they arrived.

A great time was had by all, and Hervey Bay graciously presented us with the trophy they won last year for the fishing competition. Tight lines.

These organisations and many others are there to provide support and guidance for individuals experiencing mental health issues or crises. Many offer SMS or online chat options so don’t hesitate to reach out to them or encourage someone you know to seek help if needed.

A comprehensive brochure with additional helplines and websites has been created by Brangan Medical and will be available at participating local businesses and community venues this October.

Finally, Queensland Mental Health Week is 7 to 15 October. Lions Club of Tin Can Bay will be raising awareness by turning a tree blue along Groper Street, Tin Can Bay, near IGA.

OCTOBER BRINGS us to Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to shed some light on our mental health and overall wellbeing.

Mental health encompasses a range of factors, including a person’s emotional stability, cognitive functioning, interpersonal relationships, and their ability to cope with stress and adversity, yet it often remains shrouded in stigma and misconceptions. Mental Health Awareness Month is dedicated to breaking down these barriers, fostering understanding, and encouraging open conversations about mental health issues.

1. Start conversations: initiate open and non-judgmental conversations about mental health with friends, family, and colleagues. Excellent online resources on how to have a conversation are available at beyondblue.org.au, ruok.org.au, and kidshelpline.com.au

qualified and licensed Air Conditioning Installation and Maintenance only premium products and provide ongoing support and service.

Far too often, individuals experiencing mental health issues are afraid to seek help due to fear of judgement or discrimination. Mental Health Awareness Month provides a platform to educate the public about mental health conditions, their prevalence, and the importance of early intervention. By openly discussing mental health and sharing personal stories, we can challenge the misconceptions and create a more inclusive society where people feel comfortable seeking the support they need.

Being aware of one’s own mental state and taking steps to practice self-care, such as seeking help when needed, is an integral part of maintaining good mental health. During this month, individuals are encouraged to prioritise self-care practices that promote mental wellbeing. This might include exercise, meditation, journalling, or simply taking the time to relax and recharge.

Whether it be a gentle walk along the foreshore, taking a long bubble bath, writing down a list of goals or things we’re grateful for, or downloading the Smiling Mind app (Australia’s number 1 mindfulness app – and it’s FREE!), the message is clear: taking care of our mental health is just as important as taking care of our physical health.

How can you get involved?

Participating in Mental Health Awareness Month is not limited to mental health professionals or organisations, everyone can contribute to the cause:

2. Share information: use social media platforms to share informative articles, personal stories, and resources related to mental health. Follow Beyondblue, R U OK?Day and Kids Helpline Official on Facebook and Instagram.

3. Support mental health organisations: donate to or volunteer with mental health organisations and charities that provide essential services and resources to those in need. Each October the Black Dog Institute (blackdoginstitute.org.au) raises funds through their One Foot Forward initiative. Participants can sign up through their website.

Where to seek support:

Firstly, and it can’t be emphasised enough, seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s a huge step in working towards better mental health. If you are concerned about your mental health, here are some steps to consider:

• Talk to someone you trust: start by confiding in a friend or family member you trust. Sometimes, sharing your feelings and experiences with someone can be a significant first step.

• Consult your General Practitioner: your primary care Doctor can provide guidance, rule out any underlying medical conditions, offer you a Mental Health Care Plan, and refer you to a mental healthcare professional if necessary.

You may have noticed signage popping up in spots across the region about illegal dumping.

This is part of Council’s crackdown on illegal dumping as it’s not only a crime, but it pollutes our environment and harms the wildlife.

Council is counting on community support to help maintain the natural beauty of the Gympie region! If you see it, report it. Phone Council on 1300 307 800, email council@gympie.qld.gov.au, use the Snap Send Solve app, or call the State’s Pollution hotline on 1300 130 372.

For information on reporting illegal dumping and further information, please visit www.gympie.qld.gov.au/water-waste/wastedisposal/illegal-dumping

They like to dine on the ground on grass seeds and insects.

They choose a mate for life, with the female selecting the nest site where she will build, and the male collecting the materials.

The young fledge about two weeks after hatching and are themselves breeding not too long after, making it one of the fastest maturing bird species on record.

A delightful bird that is always a welcomed sight in our outback.

Chappy CHAT

SEPTEMBER HAS seen the completion of several projects that have been happening at the Rainbow Beach Learning Community. The older children have been making an apron in their weekly sewing class under the guidance of Kerry with everyone putting in a fantastic effort.

Aimee has been teaching the younger children Spanish since the beginning of the year and they have loved trying out their new words on everyone. Jade from Anglicare Gympie has been helping the younger children learn about feelings and how they can impact lives, with each child being given a yo-yo as a gift for being part of the program.

Next term we will be starting weekly drama classes with local drama teacher Sheryl Anderson, who also runs an adult class at the Community Centre. The term will finish with a concert on Tuesday 5 December where our young people will showcase what they have been working on through the term and also provide an opportunity to share a talent or skill they have in other areas.

We have some wonderful guests lined up for the term - Gabriella from the Tin Can Bay CWA will be taking the group for an interactive cooking session, Curtis from the Gympie Library will be running a robotics morning, and local Elise Bailey will be facilitating traditional games.

We are going to the next level with the Cooloola Coast Guide for Families, working on the design and layout phase. Rainbow Beach Community News is sponsoring this project and providing much-needed advice with regards to content, layout and printing and the Bay Bulletin will be providing maps for our publication which we are hoping to have available early 2024.

The 2023 Community Bush Dance at the Community Centre on Saturday 16 September was an outstanding success, again featuring Flashjack

Bush Band who were over the moon with the enthusiastic participation of young and old.

Parents and volunteers from the Learning Community provided delicious hot food and an amazing supper that was consumed very quickly after the two-hour dance workout. Georgia and Liam were the best-dressed girl and boy and received a $50 gift voucher from Tom Grady.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the night so much fun and the following businesses who provided prizes for the raffle: Rainbow Beach Horse Rides, Mahaffey Farms, Rainbow Beach Pizza, Bunnings, Rainbow Beach Learn to Surf, Dolphin Cruises, and Hartbeat Training & Consultancy.

Community Pantry

The Community Pantry has been blessed with a new freezer – thanks to Scott Taylor and Smiley Mick who tested and tagged it for us – and has purchased new lockable shelving to assist with hamper distribution at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, where our volunteers continue to distribute around 50 hampers each fortnight to Cooloola Cove, Tin Can Bay, and Rainbow Beach residents.

We have recently received several large donations of food from Woolies Cooloola, Rainbow Beach IGA, and a local resident who was relocating out of the area, which have all meant that our $10 hampers have been bursting at the seams.

Flyers with details of dates that the hampers are available and contact details can be sourced from the Tin Can Bay Centrelink office, the Rainbow Beach Community Centre, and the Tin Can Bay Library. The Centrelink office also has a number of vouchers available for local families or singles who are genuinely struggling to receive a hamper free-of-charge.

Hampers must be pre-ordered and can be delivered if recipients are unable to drive to Rainbow Beach

themselves. Pindari Life Ltd. a local charity based in Gympie provides the pantry with governance and support. We still have room for people to join our ‘Cooking on a Budget’ class being held on Wednesday 25 October at the Rainbow Beach Community Centre between 10am and 1pm.

Gabriella Field, Country Kitchens Facilitator for the Tin Can Bay branch of the QCWA, will be facilitating the class that will focus on how to make healthier meal choices on a budget through hands-on instruction, finishing with a three-course meal. This event is free for pension card holders and will include an apron, bag, and recipe book to keep. Contact Ronnie on 0413 135 867 to book your spot and be sure to let her know if you have any food allergies or intolerances.

Negotiations are underway with Foodbank Brisbane and Gympie Refrigerated Transport for frozen meals to be transported to Rainbow Beach which will be added to our hampers that include fresh fruit and veggies plus pantry staples such as cereal, pasta, tinned veggies, bread, and a variety of items from local supermarkets that are end of line or near their best before date. To order a hamper for yourself or someone who needs a helping hand, you can contact us via text to 0413 135 867 or hop onto the Rainbow Beach Community Pantry Facebook page and send us a message.
