Welcome to The White Hart, Lewes
Steeped in history, framed by staggering views and offering the epitome of style and comfort, welcome to The White Hart, Lewes, our third Heartwood Inn with boutique bedrooms.
If you’re looking for a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered, then look no further. The White Hart , an iconic grade II listed 16th Century coaching inn, is brimming with rich history and quintessential charm. This really is a destination for the curious so read on...

Historical connections
Back in 1737, The White Hart was the local pub for upand-coming political maverick, Thomas Paine. Regarded as one of the founding fathers of America, Thomas was a rising star for his theories on revolutionary politics and the inn has since been dubbed ‘A Cradle of American Independence’. The Holman Parliamentary clock, that had long stopped, has also been carefully restored and brought back to life by local clockmakers W.F. Bruce and now keeps time in the bar. Those with an eye for detail will spot the ‘TP’ initials on the ornate fireplace by the bar and will spot photographs of the inn from long ago dotted around with our design team having worked closely with family-owned Edward Reeves Photography based in Lewes and the world’s longest running photographic studio. The White Hart also proved the inspiration for William Verrall, one of the pub’s original innkeepers and pioneers of French cuisine in England.

Lots to explore
Situated just 20 minutes from the bustling seaside city of Brighton, Lewes is a magical place just waiting to be discovered. With winding cobbled lanes offering glimpses of the South Downs, independent boutiques galore and more, there is evidence of Lewes’ fantastic history around every corner. And don’t miss the renowned Lewes Bonfire Night on November 5th, an iconic celebration of fireworks and processions right on our doorstep.
The adventurous can navigate the footpaths criss-crossing the South Downs or head down to Cuckmere Haven coast where the majestic Seven Sisters greet you. Foodies can explore the many cafes and restaurants that line the bustling High Street whilst oenophiles can head to Nyetimber Vineyard for a tour before returning to the pub to enjoy a bottle of Classic Cuvée by a roaring fire.

Luxurious overnight stays
Upstairs, the 19 individually designed boutique bedrooms reveal a wealth of original features from vaulted ceilings and window seats to historic fireplaces - not to mention views of the stunning South Downs that will take your breath away - as well as all the comforts you would expect from a Heartwood Inn. Roberts radios, freshly prepared sweet treats, the comfiest Silent Night beds dressed in bedding from The Fine Linen Company and the Secret Linen Store beckon weary heads. Rainfall showers will refresh you after a day of exploration and smart TVs with casting will help you relax as you prepare for dinner in our light and airy dining room. For those looking for something even more indulgent, book into one of the four extra special Luxe rooms situated on the lower ground floor with roll top baths, fluffy robes and Bramley sleep spray for the perfect night’s rest.
Iconic surroundings
The pub has been lovingly and sympathetically restored to create a stunning space that is full of charm, quirkiness and warmth. Downstairs you can explore the panelled bar which leads into a cosy beamed snug and then into a larger bar with original panelled walls, a spectacular fireplace and high corniced ceilings. Or take in the sweeping views of the South Downs from the expansive terrace and orangery to the rear and enjoy dining al fresco whilst watching the sun set. For a taste of local craftsmanship, go no further than our very own bar, serving beers from neighbour and historic brewer, Harvey’s, alongside a carefully curated drinks list, or head to the dining room to enjoy something seasonal from our à la carte or specials menu.

Autumn adventures
The air is getting crisper and the leaves are getting crunchier beneath your feet. Autumn has arrived with its promise of hearty soups, cosy fireside meals with friends and lovely family walks. We’ll have 28 Heartwood Inns by the end of the year so it’s a great opportunity to uncover some Autumn gems. Here are some of our team’s top Autumn picks.

Spice up the season
From the unlikely pairing of Michael Bublé and Jason Derulo who penned an ode to the tipple earlier this year, the Spicy Margarita has shot up the Google search lists to become one of the hottest newcomers of the year. Try it for yourself in one of our pubs as it makes a permanent entrance onto our drinks menus for Autumn. Tis the season to add a bit of spice!
Pick your own pumpkin
Our national love of pumpkins seems to grow legs each year as old favourites such as pumpkin pie and pumpkin carving are now joined by immersive pumpkin patch festivals so it really is the season to not just pick your own pumpkin but to also pick your best pumpkin selfie! Head to what is touted as the UK’s number 1 pumpkin festival at Tulleys in Crawley to take pumpkin-perfect pics and meet some special themed characters along the way. With a number of our pubs around 30 minutes drive away you can enjoy a warming lunch afterwards at The Black Horse , Reigate, The White Horse , Dorking or The Red Deer , Horsham.
Trick or treat
Earning your “best parent” stripes for your child’s trick or treat costume seems to get harder each year but let us take the hassle out

Cosy Autumn reads
With the nights drawing in, it’s the perfect time to start a new book. Did you know the world’s longest-running literature festival is here in the UK, in Cheltenham no less?
Celebrating their 75th anniversary this October, there’s a plethora of famous and upcoming writers to check out. If you’re visiting, why not book in for dinner at our characteristic pub The King’s Arms . They’ve also got their own literary event happening on Wednesday 13th November at 7pm when you can come and meet two of Cheltenham’s best-selling crime authors, Jackie Kabler and Amanda Reynolds who will be hosting a book signing and Q&A.
Check out more info at kingsarmsprestbury.com/whatson/ or email the pub directly at prestbury@heartwoodinns.com to book your space.

Fall into the taste of autumn
Like Autumn, our delicious new menu arrived in September, bringing you a bounty of seasonal delights to tempt your taste buds. With heart-warming classics such as our French onion soup with luxurious Gruyėre for that perfect cheese pull and a foraging feast of artichoke and chestnut mushroom pithivier with red wine and port sauce you can take your pick from the very best the season has to offer.

As we usher in a season of cosy evenings playing card games by the fire, we also celebrate game season, with sustainably sourced dishes from our longterm partner and award-winning butcher to the Royal Household Aubrey Allen. Tempted by our new pheasant and venison sausages with truffle mash?
Or maybe the succulent flavours of our new 8-hour slow-cooked shoulder of Highland venison?
Enjoyed with Grand Veneur, our “Grand Huntsman” rich sauce is crafted with dark chocolate and juniper - a classic pairing with Highland venison.
Say hello to Autumn flavours…
Game
A bespoke Heartwood Inns recipe developed in partnership with Royal Warrant holders Aubrey Allen. Our pheasant and venison sausage is accompanied by chestnut mushrooms, braised
chestnuts and topped with tangy redcurrants, is the epitome of comfort and will melt in your mouth, leaving you dreaming of cosy Autumn evenings…
Celeriac
Earthy celeriac served with a tender fondant and a crisp, tangy remoulade, topped with walnuts for depth. The creamy, rustic flavours of this particular dish echo the comfort of the season, making it a perfect autumnal treat.
Mushrooms
Autumn is the perfect time for wild mushroom foraging, and we’re particularly excited to welcome back our herb gnocchi, a vegan favourite bringing you all the wonderfully earthy flavours of the forest with a fricassée of wild mushrooms alongside truffled artichoke velouté and topped with artichoke crisps.

Autumn Still Life
We love to shout about all our dishes, however our Autumn Still Life speaks for itself - a true masterpiece, evoking the magic of a woodland stroll through the forest. Picture yourself foraging for mushrooms, turning over leaves and stones - this journey is brought to life through a harmonious blend of flavours in this show stopping dessert. Indulge in a chestnut and rum parfait, velvety dark chocolate mousse, frosted pecan nuts, and a delicate vanilla-cocoa leaf tuile. Each element is thoughtfully crafted by our talented chefs to paint a vivid, delicious picture of the season’s beauty. So good, you could order one after the other… Why not pop in and experience it for yourself?
