Autumn I 2024

Welcome

Greetings from the Creative Industries Centre here at Wakefield College.

I am thrilled to welcome you to read our departmental newsletter, a new, exciting and interactive publication designed to keep you informed and engaged with the latest happenings, developments, and opportunities in our amazing department.

In this edition, you can expect to find a wealth of information. We’ll bring you the latest news from our department, keeping you up-to-date with events and the facilities the department has to offer.

Hear from our students - we believe in the power of real stories and that’s why we will be featuring student case studies, showcasing the journeys, challenges, and successes of our students. These stories not only highlight the real-world application of our courses but also serve as a testament to the supportive and innovative environment that Wakefield College offers.

College students launch exhibition with Double TWO at Wakefield Museum

Fashion and Textiles students from Wakefield College have launched an exhibition at Wakefield Museum with British heritage shirt company, Double TWO.

The exhibition, which will be open until May 2025, celebrates the rich history of the Double TWO shirt company, founded in 1940, which became globally renowned for the shirts’ replacement collars and cuffs.

Wakefield Council Museums contacted the Art & Design department at Wakefield College, proposing an opportunity to work with the students on the new exhibition at the museum to celebrate the history of the Double TWO shirt company.

They were keen to involve the Wakefield College students as he believed they would have a view on current fashion. And by involving young people in projects, it would introduce them to their heritage and museums and get their take on fashion.

Students Perform

‘The

Velveteen Rabbit’

Earlier this year, our Level 3 Acting students performed the children’s theatre piece, ‘The Velveteen Rabbit’.

‘The Velveteen Rabbit’ is a British Children’s book. It was first published in 1921 and has since won several children’s and teacher’s book awards for its heartfelt story.

The book has been adapted many times for the stage, with our students performing a particular adaptation made by local writer and director, Tina Shuker-Abell.

The students had an amazing time on stage, performing to a crowd full of friends, family and tutors!

Hear from our Students

Art, Design & Photography

Emily

We have so much creative freedom on the course, allowing me to experiment with weird and out-of-the-box designs. One of my projects involved making a top resembling a butterfly net using rope and string – it required a lot of intricacy!

Film, Media & Television

Kyle

I enjoy filming the most on my course as you get you use your own creative direction and have the freedom to go out and film whatever you like. It is a very practical course and all the equipment is provided by the College.

Music

Charlie

The course is very engaging and the tutors are always there for you, encouraging you to achieve your best even when things get tough.

Performing Arts

In summer, we get to put on end of year shows for the College and invite friends and family which everyone really enjoys. We’ve also had opportunities to go on class trips to watch pantomimes and plays be performed locally.

I want to go to an acting university in the future and secure acting roles in television or film. I also want to keep experimenting with different roles to see what range I have.
