FAR NORTH COAST SURF LIFE SAVING FUNDING SUPPORT EXTENDED AHEAD OF ANNUAL BRANCH CHAMPIONSHIPS

David Parker and Wilson Cregan shake hands on a three year extension of funding

There is good news for the region’s surf lifesaving community and beach goers ahead of this weekend’s annual branch championships with Newcastle Permanent renewing its support for another three years. Far North Coast Surf Life Saving branch president Wilson Cregan said the funding from Newcastle Permanent will help provide equipment but also support training and programs such as Nippers to give young people skills in and out of the water. “Our partnership with Newcastle Permanent is about youth development and helping us to help keep local and tourists safe at the beach,” Mr Cregan said. “It takes a lot of funding and resources to provide surf lifesaving services and programs like Nippers, so our ongoing partnership with Newcastle Permanent is vital,” he said. The Far North Coast Branch Championships will be held at Cudgen Beach on December 11 and 12. The combined seniors and nippers’ carnival will have competitors from age seven through to 70 in beach events, water events and combined events such as Iron Man. Mr Cregan said it is ftting to be holding the championships at Cudgen as the club will celebrate its centenary next year. Newcastle Permanent’s Ballina branch manager David Parker was a nipper at Brunswick Surf Life Saving Club. He is one of the Junior Surf Life Saver of the Year judges and will present the award at the carnival on Sunday. Mr Parker said, as a customer owned fnancial institution, Newcastle Permanent is about supporting community and this partnership does that in several ways. “Surf Life Saving Clubs teach young people surf safety, the physical and mental health benefts of being active, as well as teamwork and leadership skills for their future lives,” Mr Parker said. “This funding renewal means the Newcastle Permanent is supporting every surf lifesaving club from the Central Coast to the Queensland border,” he said. Despite the impacts of COVID-19, Far North Coast Surf Life Saving’s membership is continuing to grow. Almost 1800 young people, aged fve to 13, are registered to do Nippers across 10 clubs from Yamba to Fingal Heads. It is not too late to register for Nippers or get involved in supporting or volunteering at local clubs. Visit www.slsfnc. com.au Every year, Newcastle Permanent invests almost $1.5 million into local communities through its partnerships, employee donations, volunteering and fundraising programs.

CLARENCE VALLEY CRICKET HAS NEVER EXPERIENCED A SEASON LIKE 2021-22 Clearence Cricket Resumes

TIM HOWARD

Clarence Valley cricket has never experienced a season like 2021-22.

As players resurface from the Christmas break, usually inspired by iconic performances at the Boxing Day and News Years tests in Melbourne and Sydney, they normally have nearly three months of cricket under their belts.

They come back with a good idea of of the form guide as they fne tune their games for the fnals in March.

This year not so much.

Between Covid-19, which delayed the start of the season until December 4, and wet weather, which has infuenced or washed out every game so far.

Writing a form guide for Clarence cricket in March 2022 would be more like writing a fairy tale.

There’s not a lot to be done about this. It’s an unfortunate turn of events that’s going to leave an asterisk beside 2021-22 in the record books.

But far from diminishing achievements this season, it should elevate them.

Although players have been denied opportunities to play and train this season, this should be seen as a test of their true abilities as competitors.

Rising above adversity and performance under pressure has always been the benchmark of a competitive athlete.

Whether it is circumstance or an opponent that applies the pressure, the best thrive.

But it bears repeating, season 2021-22 has been like no other.

At the half way point there is nothing in the bank to say how the season has progressed.

While the records of the players are there for all to see, form is a different matter.

There’s nothing to show which of the old guard has dipped further toward retirement, which player among the middle ranks has developed their game to a new level, or what promising young gun threatens to take the competition by storm.

So we look to the post-Christmas GDSC Premier League with fresh eyes.

We know premiers Ulmarra Hotel Tucabia Copmanhurst remain a formidable unit with their fast bowling threat and experienced batting line up.

Beaten grand fnalist from 2020-21 Brothers remains the strongest threat with their strong all round game and regular runs from skipper Jake Kroehnert.

How the GDSC Easts/ Westlawn and South Services outfts front up is less certain.

There are plenty of changes at Souths, most notably the return of Brendan Cleaver to the side after a time away from the game.

He rejoined brothers Chris and Dylan, who have been regulars at the club for more than decade.

As a teenager he score centuries regularly and should that habit return he will turn Souths into a serious threat for the semi-fnals.

Easts/Westlawn were the surprise packets of last season.

They knocked over both front runners and showed that with just a little more consistency, they could seriously threaten in the fnals.

The premier league resumes on January 15, with the premiers tackling Easts Westlawn at Ellem Oval and Brothers and Souths clashing at Ulmarra.
