Leadership Okeechobee

Leadership Okeechobee is a proud and outstanding extension of our Chamber of Commerce dating back to 2013. Each year a group of individuals from all different ages, professions and backgrounds submit applications to be chosen for the Leadership Okeechobee program. From there they commit themselves to an eight-month long education on the resources and functioning of our hometown and where they could potentially plug themselves in to help Okeechobee continue to succeed and improve for the future. To complete the program and to give back to the community the entire class must decide on a project to in some way improve or give back. The Chamber is in the process of recruiting participants for its 2019 Leadership Okeechobee Class. At the Chamber we understand that in most cases the participants of this program will be employees. The time commitment for this program is dependent upon the participant and the employer. There is a required class once a month

Chamber Events

Join the Chamber of Commerce and area businesses to “Shop till we Drop. Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. In rural areas like Okeechobee it is important for the community to do their shopping in local small businesses. In a recent poll, when an individual spends $100.00 in a small business $68.00 actually stays in our community as opposed to $100.00 spent at chain stores, where only $43.00 stays in the community.

Our Story Okeechobee County has a rich history in tourism and agriculture and while we are always working to diversify the base of industries and encourage the creation of additional high wage job opportunities, we like to remember just exactly where we came from. Being located on the second largest lake in the U.S., Okeechobee has long been known as a paradise for fishing, hunting and other outdoor recreational activities. However, its friendly neighbors, unique small businesses and southern charm are what keeps folks coming back year after year. Lake Okeechobee is part of our rich and varied history but it doesn’t entirely explain how our little town came to be. In the later part of the year 1837, Colonel Zachary Taylor arrived in the present day area of Basinger with orders to capture hostile Native Americans and in the process, establish forts along a supply line to provide support for the campaign.

25

One of these forts was located along the banks of the Kissimmee River and named Ft. Basinger in honor of Lt. William Basinger who was killed at Dade’s Massacre. During The Seminole War Period (1835-1860), the Battle of Okeechobee took place on December 25, 1837 with an estimated 37 soldiers killed and 126 wounded between the two parties. When the war ended in 1842, seven years of “peace” followed until 1849 when two whites were killed at a trading post on Peas Creek, while on the east coast, near Fort Pierce, a trader was killed by the Indians. In order to avoid another convict Indian leaders turned the culprits over to the military authorities. Due to this incident the War Department ordered the establishment of a line of forts across the state from Fort Brooke to the Indian River one of those being Fort Drum. The third and last Seminole War broke out in 1855 and lasted until 1858 when Seminole leader, Billy Bowlegs II, was induced to leave Florida and the Third Seminole War came to an end. Only a handful of Seminoles then remained in the wilds of south Florida. Now that the Civil War had ended, Fort Basinger became the place to homestead and it quickly flourished. The area’s first white settlers were Peter and Louisiana Raulerson, who arrived in 1896 from

Basinger, just up the road in Osceola County. Over the next few years it became a center of business as it began selling crops and goods brought in on steamers traveling the winding water way. Basinger eventually was home to several hotels, a post office, a school & a general store. Meanwhile during this same time (1860-1917) in Fort Drum the Indian War fort had been abandoned for many years and the area was a true wilderness. Elder Swain donated for community use seven and one half acres; five for a cemetery to be named St. Martha, in honor of his wife, and the remaining two and one half to be used for a church and school. He built the church and preached there for many years and taught the children of Fort Drum in the school building he also constructed. This brought many to the once abandoned Fort and with time the community established a post office, several general stores and a school of their own. Fort Drum’s social life consisted of political picnics, square dances, fish fries, cane grindings, candy pulls and camp outs. Unlike Basinger, the Fort Drum Community received the Kissimmee Valley Extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad in 1914. A small depot was built at Fort Drum and several miles north another station was established. As the railroad came through the area more and more, families began to move to the two communities. For the times, those homesteading felt that the communities were becoming “too crowded” and began relocating closer to the lake which was once Indian Territory. By early 1917 sentiment was strong among the citizens of Okeechobee for the formation of a new county. Okeechobee County officially came into being May 8, 1917 and was formed from parts of Osceola, St. Lucie, and Palm Beach counties and had an area of 487,040 acres.

To get more information, view photos, historical artifacts and publications relating to the rich history of Okeechobee, please contact the Okeechobee Historical Society, located at the Historical Tantie School House at 1850 Highway 98 N., Okeechobee, FL or call (863) 763-4344. Hours are limited.

The first officers of Okeechobee County were: Smith J. Drawdy, Sheriff; Henry H. Hancock, County Judge; David R. McNeill, Tax Assessor; Ewell R. Wright, Tax Collector; Rufus P. Fletcher, Clerk of the Circuit Court; W. F. Walker, Supervisor of Registration; Richard E. Hamrick, Superintendent of Public Instruction; Samuel L. Gray, J. M. Lee, and Willis W. Chandler, members of the school board; D. E. Austin, W. W. Potter, Alex Thompson, Robert Upthegrove, and R. E. McLaughlin, County Commissioners. These first officers of Okeechobee County will go on to establish many of the communities, families and government structure we still see today and are memorialized by use of their surname. www.OkeechobeeBusiness.com |

DEVELOPMENT The Economic Council of Okeechobee Is A Non-Profit, Non-Governmental, Non-Partisan Organization which strives to: •Act as a catalyst between the public and private sectors to foster dialogue, planning, and action •Involve the economic, political, and social processes of the County •Comprise the top industry, business, and professional leaders of the community •Promote principles of good government and good citizenship •Provide a forum for open discussion of matters of public interest •Encourage service-minded individuals to serve their community

It all started when in 1990, twelve prominent members of the local business community banded together for the purpose of providing concerned business owners with a united voice that would be heard by the City, County, and the State of Florida. The members serve on various committees each with different goals in mind. The committees include: Action Committees, Quality of Life Committee and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County was launched in January 2011 as a result of the hard work and efforts of Okeechobee Main Street’s Economic Restructuring Committee. The successful launch of the organization would not have been possible without the collaboration and financial support of Okeechobee County and the City of Okeechobee. Business leaders throughout the community and partner organizations such as the Economic Council of Okeechobee were also instrumental in helping get this effort off to a great start. The primary goal of the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County is to strengthen and build on our history and tradition in tourism and agriculture while working to diversify the base of industries and encourage the creation of additional high wage job opportunities. Okeechobee has become home to several manufacturing firms fabricating products ranging from specialty construction components and marine industry products to telecommunications equipment. Businesses seeking to relocate or expand in Florida will find a great home in Okeechobee. Being located on the second largest lake in the U.S., Okeechobee has long been known for as a paradise for fishing, hunting and other outdoor recreation activities. Okeechobee also has a proud history of leadership in the agricultural industry. Citrus, beef, dairy and other agricultural products have been and continue to be primary drivers of the local economy. In dairy production, in particular, Okeechobee has been a leader in the southeast U.S. for over 40 years.

The population of the market area (30 mile radius of downtown Okeechobee) is 174,528. Approximately 6 million visitors per year come to enjoy activities around Lake Okeechobee, and about 75% of the state’s population lives within 2 hours of Okeechobee.

The Tourist Development Council promotes Okeechobee County as a desirable tourist destination by funding marketing campaigns and events that enhance our economy while preserving our natural resources and quality of life. The Tourist Development Council continues to develop new and interesting marketing campaigns as well as relationships that all work together to promote our communities as a great place to come and visit. Okeechobee County Tourist Development Council is a local government department consisting of nine resident board members appointed by the Board of County Commissioners as well as a Tourism Coordinator. Tourism is an essential part of our community’s sustainability and with that in mind these partners commit to ensuring transparency, fiscal responsibility of tax dollars and that the economic impact from tourist dollars stays in Okeechobee. Understanding the importance of tourism and welcoming our visitors makes Okeechobee a unique Florida experience.

The Okeechobee Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the Okeechobee downtown district, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation and making downtown a vibrant destination to visit are as critical to Okeechobee’s future. Building on downtown’s inherent assets -- rich architecture, personal service and traditional values and most of all, a sense of place. Okeechobee Main Street, Inc. is a 501(C) 3 not for profit organization with roots dating back to 1980 when the National Trust for Historic Preservation formed the Main Street program. The Okeechobee Main Street approach rekindles entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. Because it is a locally driven program, all initiatives stem from local issues and concerns. The Okeechobee Main Street program’s success is based on a comprehensive strategy of work, tailored to local needs in four distinctive areas, often referred to as the Four Point Approach.

Lake Okeechobee is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Florida and the second largest freshwater lake in the United States, second to Lake Michigan. The name Okeechobee comes from the Seminole Indian words “oki” (water) and “chubi” (big), and literally means “Big Water”. It is believed that the lake was formed approximately 6,000 years ago when the ocean waters receded and left shallow waters covering a big part of Florida. At 730 square miles wide and a surprising average depth of only 9 feet, Lake Okeechobee At its capacity holds 1 trillion gallons of water and is the headwaters of the Everglades. The lake offers the perfect habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife. Various species of fish are found in Lake Okeechobee but it’s best known for the presence of the largemouth bass. Some of the biggest bass in the US have been recorded off this lake. Other favorite species are the Speckled Perch and Blue Gill. In addition to superior fishing on the lake, the best way to experience the expansive grassy marsh of this inland freshwater sea is by pontoon boats, kayaking and most popular is airboating on the lake. If you like hiking you can access the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail from the lake’s north end. While visiting Okeechobee you can spend the night in one of the campgrounds on the Kissimmee River, which feeds into Lake Okeechobee, and if you don’t have your own boat you can catch a pontoon or airboat ride from the marina. Also private Guides are available. Contact the Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County for listings.

Anglers have their favorite secret spots on the Big Lake, some they reveal, some remain secrets. Here are a few spots that are known as popular locations to catch a trophy bass or other species. HARNEY POND In a recent fishing series event many anglers found fish in matted hydrilla in Harney Pond. Harney Pond is a little more protected than the other areas listed here, which might be important when the forecast wind and rain arrives. MONKEY BOX The Monkey Box has been noted for years as an Okeechobee hot spot. There are endless areas to explore here, especially with the high water. Anglers might be able to reach areas they have never seen before. SOUTH BAY Known for its large hayfields composed of wiregrass, South Bay is the largest area highlighted here. Holes in the “hay” might indicate beds or ambush areas where bass can be caught and will be a starting point for anglers trying to dial in on a winning area. THE NORTH SHORE With its long stretches of cattails, the North Shore is a prime area for flipping in thick cover. The cattails here are particularly good because they are protected by one of the biggest flats of hydrilla in the lake – the hydrilla, too, can be an excellent producer. THE SHOAL Halfway up the west side of Lake Okeechobee is the Shoal. Anglers might also find schools of shad migrating into this area. If seagulls are diving to feed on shad, it’s a good chance the bass are there and feeding on shad too.

Okeechobee is a great town if you are a fisherman. Lake Okeechobee, the river and canals in the area provide some of the finest bass fishing in the world. But, if you are not into fishing, there are other things to do, like hiking and biking.

66

| 2018 Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County

The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) provides plenty of opportunities for both hiking and biking. A fairly flat, ten-foot wide, paved multi-user path is provided on the top of the levy that surrounds the lake, and in the Okeechobee area there are still large sections of it open and available for use, unlike areas on the south and east side of the lake that are mostly closed for multi-year construction projects by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. For the mountain bikers, there is a dedicated mountain bike trail in the Okeechobee area as well. Known as the Grassy Island Trail, this off-road trail is found on the north side of Northwest 50th Drive, a little over one mile west of U.S. 441. There is a large parking area with an information kiosk and a gate. The Florida National Scenic Trail system circles Lake Okeechobee, on the dike and then heads north along the side of the Kissimmee River. This trail system is described at the web site www.floridatrail.org and there you will find directions to trail heads, and where there may be closures along the way.

A very popular spot where you can see protected and rescued wildlife is located North of Okeechobee. Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc., (AWRC) is a non-profit 501(c) educational-based wildlife care facility dedicated to bringing people and wildlife together to develop a community awareness of the value of our Florida wildlife. The ultimate goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and return recovered animals to their natural habitat but unfortunately some cannot return to the wild so Arnold’s is their forever home. On the facility there is also a half-acre free roaming butterfly garden. They are open 7 days a week and kids are free. Transportation Being centrally located in Florida on the crossroads of Highway 441 and Highway 70, Okeechobee is an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban settings but provides convenience to Florida attractions, beaches and amenities of larger cities within a short drive. Major interstates, railway, waterways, ports, and airports provide excellent access for businesses. Okeechobee County is located close to the Florida Turnpike, Interstate 95, and US Highway 27. The county is also serviced by both CSX/Amtrak Rail Systems and the Okeechobee County Airport. Located just 33 miles west of the City of Port Saint Lucie, 63 miles northwest of West Palm Beach, 110 miles south of the Greater Orlando Metro area and 95 miles Northeast of I-75 in Fort Myers, the county is serviced by the following major US Highway and State Road systems: State Road 70 (East-West); US Highway 441 (North-South), State Road 710 (North-South), US Highway 98 (North-South), State Road 78 (East-West) and State Road 60 (East-West).

Aviation Okeechobee County Airport is a general aviation airport which provides two (2) runway approaches and is serviced by a fixed base operator (FBO). Other amenities include Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS), Terminal Building, Fuel Services, and Restaurant. There are also opportunities for hanger leases and buildings based on availability. Located at Okeechobee County Industrial Park, provides unique opportunities for aviation-based businesses. Palm Beach International (PBI) and Orlando International (MCO) airports are less than an hour and a half from downtown Okeechobee and provide adequate access to major hubs throughout the United States and abroad.

Seaports Okeechobee County is located within 35 miles of the Port of Ft Pierce (28 Feet) and 55 miles of the Port of Palm Beach (34 Feet) providing inter-modal opportunities to these ports.

Okeechobee Train Station The Okeechobee Train Station, completed in early 2011, was inspired by historic depots found in small towns across the nation. Composed primarily of rich red brick, the structure has an enclosed, one-story waiting room with large windows that keep out the wind, but also allow ample sunlight to flood and brighten the space. The $1.5 million project was funded through Amtrak’s Mobility First initiative under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Travelers with an eye for detail and knowledge of the Amtrak system might notice that the structure is a close cousin to a couple that were built during the same period along the route of the Capitol Limited in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Nearby stands a station built in 1924 and originally served by the Florida, Western and Northern Railroad, a subsidiary of the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Amtrak does not provide ticketing or baggage services at this facility, which is served by two daily trains.
