A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP Dear Friends, This report marks another great year for HeartGift. We welcomed new staff, board members, host families, volunteers and children to our mission. Additionally, we solidified plans that will help guide us into the future.
We have also been very busy building partnerships that will have a lasting and positive impact for our organization. An example being, the foundations and hospitals that continue to support our work. We are grateful to all of our partners, volunteers and mission advocates Christy Casey-Moore
– their passion strengthens our evolution.
Chief Executive Officer I invite you to this in-depth look at HeartGift. Our goal is to share our story and offer you the opportunity to review our financial data and metrics. We believe our story demonstrates the need to address the disparity of care in developing nations. It is also a story of kindness by so many and how the acceptance of diversity and inclusion can change a life.
We continue to be amazed by the genuine outpouring and focus from our dedicated advocate, each of you help drive the success of our organization.
As co-founders, much of our work over the last seventeen years has been focused on ensuring we are steadfast and enthusiastic in finding more opportunities and acceptance of change that will allow us to continue our mission impact for the future.
In 2017, our mission expansion program became a priority to expand our services not only here, in the United States, but abroad as well. We accomplished this goal by supporting our first medical mission trip to Bolivia. During this trip we were able to travel to the home country of 21 children who were in desperate need of life-saving heart surgery. Dr. John "Chip" Oswalt Co-Founder & Board Chair
Additionally, we have focused time on the governance and board sustainability that allows our growth.
Looking forward, we plan to support Bolivia’s medical mission trip again, as well as look to new opportunities, while continuing to focus on the growth of our existing chapter structure in our five chapter areas; Austin, Dallas, Houston, Louisiana and San Antonio.
We hope our story inspires you to be a part of a mission driven organization that changes the lives of young children and those around them.

MEET YUJIA Born in China, Yujia was abandoned on the streets as a baby shortly after birth. She was found by a couple who took her in and cared for her. She was born with a cleft palate that was fixed at 5 months old. During that time, it was discovered she had a congenital heart defect. After visiting several hospitals it was determined the procedure was both too risky and too costly for the farming family who took her in.
HeartGift accepted Yujia’s case and brought her to Austin. In April 2017, she received her life-saving heart surgery. She has since returned home to China where she continues to thrive with her family.
MEET LAUDNER Born in Nicaragua, Laudner was 14 years old when introduced to HeartGift, making him one of the oldest patients served. Diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, his mother would take him by bus 24 hours away from their home every six months seeking help. Every visit, local physicians would tell her there was nothing they could do at that time.
When Laudner arrived in New Orleans in March of 2017, he was "blue" in color due to low oxygen, but fortunately, doctors were able to successfully repair his heart defect. After a few short weeks with his host family he was able to return home healthy. Prior to surgery, Laudner's older brother would carry him on his back to soccer games where he could only watch the other boys. Today, he can join them playing the game he loves!

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the foundation. Without the dedication of all of our volunteers, host families, surgeons, nurses, dentists and many more, HeartGift would not be able to save as many children.

HOW IT WORKS RESOURCES The unique HeartGift model assembles donated funds, donated medical services and volunteer support into concrete life-saving gifts for children.
HeartGift pays a negotiated fee to offset costs of a surgery. Doctors donate their services, and volunteers from the community host the child and a caregiver during his or her stay.

STEP FIVE

STEP FOUR The child undergoes life-saving heart surgery with a world renowned medical team.
STEP THREE The host family provides a warm loving home to the child and their caregiver as well as assisting them to the doctor appointments preparing for surgery.
STEP TWO The child is flown to the United States from their native country with a caregiver to stay with a host family.
STEP ONE After very careful consideration, a child is selected from our medical committee.

BOLIVIA MEDICAL MISSION TRIP In 2017, HeartGift helped fund a medical mission trip to Bolivia. Dr. Breinholt, a pediatric cardiologist and Dr. Douglas, a pediatric surgeon from our partner hospital, Children's Memorial Hermann, led a team of doctors, nurses and staff members on the trip. Although Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas the day the team had planned to leave for Bolivia, it didn't stop them. With airports and transportation shut down, and a small delay, the team embarked on quite the journey. Nonetheless, the team persevered and completed a successful mission by saving the lives of 21 children in a 10-day period. Efforts like this prove our strategy to expand the mission impact.

2017 ACHIEVEMENTS BECAUSE OF YOU... We completed our first medical mission trip to Bolivia saving 21 children.
We served 37 children domestically in 2017 and over 350 children total to date.
We received our first ever grant from Ethicon-Johnson & Johnson.

LOOKING FORWARD In August 2018, HeartGift will complete its second medical mission trip. Surgeons will travel to Bolivia to perform over 20 lifesaving surgeries.
By October 2018, HeartGift will reach its 400th child served.
Louisiana will double their impact by adding 6 additional surgeries bringing them to a total of 12 surgeries per year.
The Austin Chapter will host a new fundraising event called "Brew for the Heart" that takes place in the fall.
