In pursuit of health equity Health equity has many faces. It’s a child in a First Nation community, loving the active games he’s learning from his teacher, who is using a Heart & Stroke classroom resource.

It’s a woman at a hospital emergency department, getting the tests she needs to detect the heart disease causing her chest pain and racing heartbeats. It’s a man recovering from stroke at home in his rural community, finding encouragement and answers in an online group for people living with stroke.

Thanks to your support of Heart & Stroke in 2018, faces like these are increasingly coming into focus. The theme of health equity unites many of the advances your generosity made possible.

While examples like these illustrate what health equity means to individual lives, achieving health equity is a collective endeavour. It means transforming systems to eliminate the barriers that make some groups more vulnerable to poorer heart and brain health. Today in Canada, those groups include women, Indigenous people, those of East Asian and South Asian heritage, and people living in rural and northern communities.

We’re proud of the successes you’ll read about in the following pages. Yet we know they are just the beginning.

True systemic change is a long process and we need to approach it with humility and determination. We’re excited to be launching a new strategy to guide us. This strategy was developed following extensive consultation with Heart & Stroke donors, volunteers, partners and board members, as well as researchers, healthcare professionals and people with lived experience of heart disease, stroke and related conditions — still the number one cause of premature death in Canada.

As we take aim at a healthier future for all people in Canada, your support means more now than ever before. Thank you.

Here’s what your donations did in 2018: Funded 750 of Canada’s top researchers with grants and awards totalling $33.2 million, including: • 21 national new investigators • 24 research chairs and professorships.

Helped train more than 500,000 people (including healthcare professionals and everyday Canadians) in life-saving CPR.

Raised awareness of the health inequities facing women through a combined total of almost 150 million impressions (online and in the media) for our 2018 Heart Report, Ms. Understood, and 2018 Stroke Report, Lives Disrupted.

Engaged an estimated 900,000 students across 3,800 schools in healthy activities and learning through Heart & Stroke Jump Rope for Heart.

Christina was shocked when tests showed she had blocked arteries.

Transforming women’s health

I had a gut feeling there was something wrong.

Christina Stuwe didn’t see heart disease coming. The 47-year-old mother was experiencing burning sensations in her upper back along with pain in her arms and occasional racing heartbeats. But tests showed nothing conclusive.

She had no idea that complications during her pregnancy 10 years earlier increased her risk of heart attack or stroke. She only found out when she insisted on further testing — and learned she needed bypass surgery for three blocked arteries.

Heart & Stroke launched our national women’s health awareness campaign, #TimeToSeeRed , in 2018. The goal is to close the research gap by doubling the dollars invested in studying women’s hearts and brains. It’s about preventing close calls like Christina’s. It’s about redressing the fact that until now, 2/3 of heart and stroke clinical research has been done on men.

Christina Stuwe wants women to learn from her experience—especially about the effect of pregnancy complications on your heart and brain health.

And it’s about supporting the work of researchers like Dr. Margie Davenport and Dr. Kara Nerenberg, who are studying different ways to reduce the toll of the complications that put Christina at risk.

Christina is recovering well and telling her story to alert other women. Thanks to her courage and the generosity of Heart & Stroke donors — led by founding members of our Women’s Heart and Brain Health Initiative (see p. 28) — the #TimeToSeeRed message is getting louder.

More ways you helped advance women’s health in 2018:

More than 21,000 people downloaded our Talking to your doctor resource, aimed at arming women with the knowledge to take charge of their health.

4 new Women’s Heart and Brain Health Chairs were awarded in a partnership between Heart & Stroke and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The researchers will contribute to awareness, prevention and understanding of how biology and socio-cultural factors affect women’ s heart and brain health – with two focused on Indigenous women.

All Heart & Stroke research grant applications are now required to consider the effects of sex and gender.

Promoting health

HeartSmart Kids inspired this artwork, and the quote below from Manitoba’s West Region Tribal Council.

We need this resource in our community.

A dozen Grade 1 students jockey for space on the starting line, on their bellies. As their teacher shouts “Go!” they rise up on their arms and pull themselves forward, legs dragging behind.

Laughing and wriggling, they race across the school gym.

This game, Seal Crawl (adapted from Inuit traditions of Labrador), is part of HeartSmart Kids™, a classroom resource for grades K-6 aimed at establishing healthy habits that can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke for life. The program is developed and distributed free to teachers by Heart & Stroke.

In the 2018-19 school year, the program reached 44,800 students in every province and territory — including more than 14,000 in Indigenous classrooms — thanks to support from generous donors and corporate partners.

The need is critical in Indigenous communities, where heart disease and stroke take a far larger toll than in the general population. That’s why the program highlights Indigenous traditions and content. And that’s why HeartSmart Kids is just one step in Heart & Stroke’s commitment to responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action. With your support we’ll continue to build partnerships with Indigenous people to improve health outcomes.

More ways you helped promote health in 2018: About 80% of participants stabilized or reduced their blood pressure through Heart & Stroke Activate, an innovative program piloted to help Canadians tackle this key health risk.

A revised Canada’s Food Guide was developed with significant input from Heart & Stroke. Almost all our recommendations were included, such as a focus on whole real foods and limiting consumption of processed food and sugary drinks.

Research led by Dr. Gavin Oudit has identified the cause of 1 in 5 cases of heart failure. Next goal: Therapies to prevent this killer before it takes hold.

Saving lives

Max helped save his dad’s life.

He’s kind of having a stroke!

The 9-1-1 emergency operator was surprised eight-year-old Max Pozzo recognized that his dad, Mike, was showing signs of stroke.

Because Max knew to call an ambulance, his dad received speedy treatment at the nearest stroke centre.

More ways you helped save lives in 2018:

The chain of events started with a legacy donation to Heart & Stroke. “My aunt and uncle would both be thrilled to know that their gift that they worked so hard for would save a person’s life,” says Terry Mills, speaking of Michael and Victoria Shalapata.

Almost 200,000 people learned how to save a life by viewing our 90-second videos showing how to perform CPR and use a defibrillator.

The Shalapatas wanted to help spare other families the devastating effects of stroke and earmarked $10,000 a year as a gift in their Will to help children recognize the signs of stroke.

New research on a life-saving treatment expanded the time window to 24 hours from 12 when it can be effective for some strokes — increasing access for people in rural and remote areas.

With those funds, the Heart & Stroke Jump Rope for Heart™ program taught the signs of stroke to students in 3,800 schools across Canada. In February 2018, Max was one of them. Just five days later, Max helped save his father’s life.

Stroke prevalence has increased, so it’s urgent to share FAST — a simple way to remember key stroke symptoms. The need is greatest among population groups at higher risk of stroke. That’s why Heart & Stroke is targeting the South Asian and East Asian communities with adaptions. It’s just one way Heart & Stroke donors are helping to empower more people with this life-saving knowledge.

Thousands of healthcare providers across Canada received training on the Canadian Stroke Best Practices Recommendations, keeping them current with the latest evidence on effective stroke care.

My goal is to help other survivors.

Luis Rivas knows how despair feels. A stroke in 2011 left him with paralysis affecting his left arm and leg, defeated by tasks as simple as tying his shoes. Then he found the Heart & Stroke Living with Stroke™ program, where fellow survivors helped reignite his hopes for the future.

Today Luis is a Heart & Stroke volunteer, passionate about helping as many people living with stroke as he can. That number is increasing as Heart & Stroke online support groups and resources grow to serve more people and families living with stroke and heart disease.

Our members-only Facebook communities, for example, connected more than 2,000 people with lived experience across Canada in 2018, from remote communities and big cities alike, regardless of their mobility challenges. The groups provide a safe place to share information, encourage one another and vent about setbacks.

Luis Rivas wants to help more people who have experienced a stroke discover the value of a second chance.

As a mentor, Luis is grateful to Heart & Stroke donors for helping him help others. “I love the feeling of giving back the energy and support I received when I needed it.” As the number of people living with heart disease and stroke continues to grow, he — and Heart & Stroke — will be there to help spark hope.

More ways you helped enhance recovery in 2018:

More than 120 people with lived experience of heart disease and stroke are serving alongside medical and research experts on key Heart & Stroke advisory groups. They ensure that the impact of these diseases on ordinary lives is considered in everything we do.

More than 4 million people turned to Heart & Stroke health information resources to learn about preventing, self-managing and living with heart disease and stroke.

Research by Dr. Christiane Hoppmann is revealing the role of spouses in helping stroke survivors make healthy changes.

Who he is: Proud husband and father of three, co-founder/CEO of Little Kitchen Academy, a cooking academy for kids promoting healthy lifestyle through responsible eating choices, and board chair for Heart & Stroke in BC & Yukon.

Why he gives: Heart & Stroke is close to Brian’s heart – literally.

Despite a healthy lifestyle and no risk factors, at 38, Brian started feeling unwell. Initial tests came back negative, but Brian failed the stress test, and his angiogram revealed major arterial blockages typically only seen in autopsies. While recovering from open-heart surgery, Brian wanted to learn everything he could about heart disease, starting with Heart & Stroke resources.

Mary & Suzanne O’Regan Halifax

Who they are: Wives, mothers, grandmothers, sisters-in-law, Heart & Stroke volunteers and founding members of our Women’s Heart and Brain Health Initiative.

Why they give: Mary’s son Danny was born with a congenital heart defect. After he passed away at only nine months old, Mary (above, left) became a dedicated volunteer, fundraising for Heart & Stroke for 35 years. When her husband died of heart disease at 67, she decided to get more involved.

Like Mary, Suzanne had fundraised around the neighbourhood for Heart & Stroke and had been a longtime supporter with her husband. We know less about women’s health than men’s, so many women’s symptoms go undiagnosed and untreated. Mary and Suzanne jumped on the opportunity to improve women’s health together.

They share a strong belief about what’s important:

Who he is: Retired entrepreneur, volunteer, public speaker, member of the Heart & Stroke provincial board in Ontario.

Why he gives: Shishir was only 21 when his father died suddenly of a heart attack. After losing more loved ones and experiencing heart disease himself, Shishir got involved with Heart & Stroke when he retired from his successful business. As an active volunteer who speaks on behalf of the foundation, he feels it’s important to donate regularly, setting an example for others.

Why he gives: Nearly a decade ago, Heart & Stroke tasked Jean’s executive search company with recruiting a CEO for its Quebec team. A year later, he was invited to join the board. Who she is: Business owner, volunteer, daughter, granddaughter, member of the Heart & Stroke provincial board in Saskatchewan.

Why she gives: Heart disease has hit Mackenzie’s family hard. She lost her mother and grandfather to sudden cardiac events; both her father (pictured with Mackenzie, above) and grandmother had heart surgery. At her boutiques in Saskatoon and Regina, Mackenzie raises funds for Heart & Stroke every February, matching donations from her customers. And she does all she can to make women aware of their heart risks.

“I do lots of speaking at different events. I always make sure that I talk about it: We’re all women and what can we do in the fight against heart issues?”

Who he was: Entrepreneur, award-winning business owner, husband, brother and uncle.

Why he gave: Bob had a talent for finding ways to make a lasting impact in his community and the lives of others, says his nephew, Jason Clark. He was eager to help those around him in need — so long as they were the type to work hard. Founder of several successful businesses, Bob lived modestly but was abundantly generous to charities, leaving a bequest to Heart & Stroke when he passed away.

“Heart & Stroke was a charity that was very dear to him and he knew a number of people that it had affected,” said Jason Clark.
