Easy Lawn Care

W

ith the outdoor season upon us, there are a few simple ways to help your lawn stay lush and green and become the pride and joy of your neighborhood. You can start by giving your lawn a good raking to create a de-thatching effect and “wake up” the lawn for the season.

Fertilizing Cutting the grass removes nutrients that need to be replaced to achieve healthy growth. From the beginning of spring, you should fertilize the lawn every four or five weeks. Nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous are important ingredients for a healthy lawn. Application amounts and instructions are available on most fertilizer packaging.

• In early spring, start the new season by using crabgrass preventer.

• In late spring, apply weed-n-feed that will kill weeds and help your lawn grow.

• By mid-summer or any time apply lawn food for a stronger, healthy & greener lawn.

• In early fall, apply winterized fertilizer to provide additional

nutrients.

Watering How often you need to water your lawn depends on temperature and humidity. When a lawn needs water, the grass will begin to take on a blue-gray tint, and the older grass blades will begin to curl up and wilt. New lawns should be watered once a day so seeds can germinate and a solid root system can form.

Cutting Regular cutting of the lawn is important because it thickens the grass.

Cutting it little and often is better than all in one go. Switch directions and patterns so the grass blades aren’t pressed in the same direction each time. In the middle of summer, you might want to keep the grass a little longer to withstand heat.

With persistence, you can win the battle against weeds using the right tools, herbicides or weed-n-feed products. Also, the grass roots need air in order to grow, therefore it is important to occasionally aerate your lawn to clear away dead roots and thatch to create more breathing space for the lower parts of the grass plus help stems grow better.

ake greater use of your outdoor living space by creating your own unique patio. Consider using sturdy, beautiful concrete patio blocks or pavers for your project as they come in a variety of styles, shapes and sizes. Keep the following considerations in mind as you create your new patio.

Easy Maintenance A patio can be created with many different types of materials. Although the initial cost may be higher, using patio blocks eliminates the need to stain and seal a patio continuously, saving you money in the long run. Use water to keep it clean, it’s that easy.

Eliminate Weeds Use landscaping cloth to eliminate weeds, moss and vegetation from growing up between your patio blocks, especially when placing blocks over rich soil. A layer of sand between the cloth and the blocks is recommended.

Plan for Drainage It’s important to have a level patio, but make sure it slopes away from your home’s foundation towards an area that can handle the additional drainage.

Keep Blocks Tight To help minimize the blocks from moving around, plan for a good solid edge by using extra pavers or some sort of edging. This will also help eliminate creeping weeds from developing.

Overwatering Plants

H

ealthy roots are the foundation for healthy plants. Once it has grown a substantial root system the plant starts putting its energy in growing a larger plant and more flowers. Roots are important to a plant because they are its primary source of water and food and are also important for the uptake of oxygen. The roots of the plant take up water but they also need air to breathe.

Why is overwatering so detrimental to plant health?

This will allow the soil to dry quicker and at the same time bring oxygen to the root zone.

• If the plant isn’t too large, re-pot into a different pot. Be sure to add new soil. This will give the roots nice, clean soil to grow into.

CPR for Overwatered Plants • Move the plant to a shady area, even if it is a full sun plant. Once the roots are healthy move the sun plants back to a sunny location.

• Begin watering only when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch. Do not allow the plant to get extremely dry, this additional shock could be enough to kill the plant. If the plant is wilting badly, you can mist or syringe the plant’s foliage with water which will prevent too much leaf scorch. Do not fertilize until the plant returns to its normal condition. Treating with a broad-spectrum fungicide can be helpful.

• If possible, create additional air spaces around the root ball. One way of doing this is slowly tilt the pot to its side and then gently tap the container, the soil ball should now be loose within the container. Carefully re-stand the pot up when completed there should be small air pockets between the pot wall and around the soil ball.

• Even if you take all of these steps there is no guarantee that your plant will bounce back. It partially depends on how badly the roots have been damaged. If you have a tendency to kill a plant with kindness and are composting more than survive, you might look at changing your soil mix to a lighter, fluffier soil. Make sure you have plenty of drainage holes in your containers. If you tend to keep plants on the wet side you might want to steer clear of plants that are more prone to problems from over-watering.

Over-watering, in simple terms, drowns your plant. Soil that is constantly wet won’t have enough air pockets and the roots can’t breathe.

• Be sure the pot is draining. If no drainage holes exists add some or re-pot the plant into a pot with drainage holes. Do not allow the pot to sit in water, this will keep the soil too wet.
