COVID still wreaking havoc on events Last year’s Thumb Traveler presented one of the biggest challenges I’ve had in my career as a journalist — how do you put together a nearly 100-page section that focuses primarily on summer events when everything is canceled due to a global pandemic?

Yet somehow, we managed to get the section out, albeit a little bit late as we worked to confirm what events were still happening and what ones weren’t.

While this year’s section shows a lot of positivity, as many of those events that were canceled in 2020 are scheduled to return in 2021, this year presents its own set of difficulties.

As we put this section together prior to Memorial Day weekend, on a normal year many of the committees that put these events together are still in the early stages of planning and setting dates. But a year after canceling an event and when you’re still in the grips of a pandemic, a lot of people haven’t been so quick to get plans into motion just yet.

A lot is still up in the air about the 2021 season. We are optimistic.

Major events that we missed last year — like the Huron Community

Fair, the Michigan Sugar Festival, the Cheeseburger in Caseville — are back on the schedule this year, and people are optimistic they will look much like they have in the past.

But in reality, we don’t know yet.

As I write this column, we’re still under similar restrictions to what we were under last summer. Coronavirus numbers here in the Upper Thumb are falling rapidly, and people are continuing to be vaccinated, which should only help the situation as we move toward the festival season.

But if the coronavirus has taught us anything, it’s that nothing is certain.

So keep that in mind as you browse this section this year. The schedule of events contained in these pages is always tentative, but maybe this year more than ever before. If you’re unsure about an event, call ahead.

Dates may change. Times may change. The event itself may change.

As we hear of changes, we will report them in the Huron Daily Tribune, and online at www. michigansthumb.com.

Also remember that if restrictions are in place during some of these events this year, it’s not necessarily

the event organizers who are requiring them. Be respectful, follow the rules, and enjoy the fact that we’re able to have events this year.

I’m hopeful that this will be the last year that this section contains the words “coronavirus” and “pandemic.”

Things are returning to normal, and that will allow us to return to the things we love here in the Upper Thumb.

Events or no events, there is a lot to enjoy in this area. Get out and check out some of the wonders of the Thumb.

One of the more recognizable attractions in Huron County is Turnip Rock, located near Port Austin. The rock formation is only accessible by water, but draws sightseers from all over.

Welcome to Huron County Huron County is located in the Upper Thumb of Michigan. It is surrounded on three sides by water — Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron. The county has a land area of 824 square miles, which is 139 square miles greater than the average for the other 82 counties in the state. Of the 28 townships in the county, only 15 are about 36 square miles.

The irregular shore, 93 miles long, makes the other 13 townships irregular in size, ranging from one square mile (Pointe aux Barques Township) to 44 square miles (Sherman Township).

Bad Axe is the county seat and the

largest city, and has a population of just over 3,050 people. Harbor Beach and Caseville are the other cities in the county.

The villages are Elkton, Kinde, Owendale, Pigeon, Port Austin, Port Hope, Sebewaing and Ubly.

Huron County ranks as one of the top agricultural counties in Michigan based on agricultural farm income.

Major crops grown in the county are corn, dry edible beans, sugar beets, wheat and oats. Major enterprises include dairy, livestock and poultry production.

Because of the natural beauty, ideal topography and sandy beaches,

Huron County has an ideal setting for the tourism industry.

The shoreline offers numerous opportunities for vacationers. There are two state parks — Sleeper State Park and Port Crescent State Park and two roadside parks — Jenks Park and Brown Park.

Also, Huron County maintains nine county parks along the shoreline, including Caseville Park, Lighthouse Park, Stafford Park, Wagener Park and Sebewaing Park, all of which offer overnight camping. Others are Philp Park, Port Austin Bird Creek Park, McGraw Park and Oak Beach Park, which are day use only parks.

Bad Axe: The hub of the Thumb

From unique shopping to a great tour of Huron County’s past, Bad Axe offers visitors a wide range of entertainment.

With attractions like the Pioneer Log Cabin Village in City Park to the Huron Community Fair, a week-long celebration in July through August, there’s always something happening in the heart of the Thumb.

Bad Axe got its unique name from Capt. Rudolph Pabst, a surveyor who mapped several trails between Harbor Beach and Sebewaing. Those trails would later become M-53 and M-142, which intersect Huron County vertically and horizontally, respectively.

The intersection where they meet was dubbed “Bad Axe,” and the name took. Pabst, the story goes, established headquarters at an abandoned hunter’s camp where he found a broken axe. Bad Axe became the county seat of Huron County in 1873 and was incorporated as a village in 1885. Twenty years later, in

1905, it achieved city status.

Bad Axe plays host to the Huron Community Fair in late July. The fairgrounds are abuzz with action and a wide array of activities for all ages. After being canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the fair is scheduled to return this year.

Organizers will be following any state restrictions in place at the time.

But the fun doesn’t end with summer. There’s always something to do in Bad Axe, just ask Santa Claus. He visits this city each November for the annual Christmas parade, which draws thousands into town.

A popular spot all year long is The Pioneer Log Village, 205 S. Hanselman St., which is the largest collection of authentically restored pioneer log buildings in Michigan.

The six individual museums include a pioneer home, general store, oneroom school house, chapel, barn and a blacksmith shop. They were originally built between 1875 and 1900, and moved to this site from elsewhere around Huron County in the 1980s. All of the buildings are fully furnished to show what 19th Century pioneer life was like. And the chapel is available for weddings.

Bay Port: Where the fish caught the man Located between Sebewaing and Caseville is the charming Village of Bay Port. surely one has to wonder — why fish sandwiches?

The tradition began one summer when the late Henry Engelhard and his wife decided they would try an innovative way to raise money to help put the couple’s three daughters through college.

Employed by the Bay Port Fish Co. and armed with a secret recipe from a restaurant owner and friend, Henry helped put Bay Port on the map with his taste sensation.

From a stand in their front yard near M-25, the couple sold fish sandwiches and wrote themselves into Thumb-area lore.

The sandwich sale became part of the village’s

The Wallace Stone Plant, known by locals as the Bay Port quarry, still is operating. The quarry, in its heyday, served as a company town and provided jobs and homes for hundreds of people.

A number of parks and access points are located in Bay Port for outdoor recreation. The village’s public access to the bay offers a great vantage point for fishing or just watching one of Michigan’s breathtaking sunsets.

annual celebration several years ago. It now features games as well as other entertainment, but the sandwich is still the most popular thing on the menu.

Two things remain constant — the sandwiches still are so big you have to eat them with two hands, and Henry never did give up his friend’s secret recipe.

The Port Austin History Center is located one mile east of Port Austin, at 1424 Pointe Aux Barques Road. The museum, housed in a 1904 Maccabee Society building, presents the history of Port Austin, Grindstone City and Port Crescent. Exhibits include early area industries, shipping, agriculture and homemaking; the Great Thumb Fire of 1881; Native Americans in the Thumb; and the Port Austin Reef Lighthouse.

The wooded grounds feature walking trails and several other historic buildings, including a log cabin and log barn, a 19th century Grindstone City house, and a 1950’s barbershop. Special events include an annual quilt show, speaker series and traditional craft classes. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

Caseville: The Thumb’s Key North Caseville has celebrated more than 100 summers on the beautiful Saginaw Bay, but the fun is just beginning.

The city is famous for its sandy beaches, marina facilities, breathtaking beauty, and of course, its fishing.

The city was settled in 1836 by Reuben Dodge.

Lumbering was an important early industry with the first sawmill constructed in 1852. Other important early industries were shipbuilding and salt mining.

Famous visitors include President William McKinley, who vacationed in Caseville as a young man.

Caseville boasts one of Michigan’s most popular beaches. A harbor of refuge and great boating facilities bring anglers to the area in search of walleye, perch, trout, salmon and more.

Caseville also plans a number of events throughout the year for the enjoyment of visitors and local residents. Some of the annual events include Cheeseburger in Caseville, Shanty Days, Country RibStock, the Caseville Walleye Tournament,

a spectacular fireworks display, Pumpkin Festival and the Holly Berry Fair.

Cheeseburger has proven to be wildly popular as thousands flock to the city as it transforms itself into “Key North,” complete with wacky events, cool tunes, tasty burgers and tropical attire.

Last year’s Cheeseburger in Caseville Festival was canceled and replaced with a scaled-down Slice of Cheeseburger due to the pandemic, but plans are underway for the full event to return this summer, barring any state restrictions.

Caseville also features a park east of Clay Street. It has a two-court tennis court, horseshoe pits, playground equipment, a ball diamond and restrooms. There’s also a ball field and playground equipment at Caseville Public School.

Go karts, a giant slide, miniature golf and bumper boats also are available in the community.

Caseville Municipal Harbor on Dock Street has spaces for boats as long as 70 feet. Slips are rented on a first-come, first-serve

A skid pier for the handicapped and concrete ramp are located at this site. The area has two handicapped-accessible

vault toilets and handicapped-accessible parking.

Caseville’s Inner Bay alone contains 300,000 shallow sandy acres — truly an angler’s paradise.

Its Outer Bay, however, with depths to 90 feet and countless reefs, offers excellent walleye, salmon and lake trout fishing.

The Charity Islands located in the Outer Bay have a reputation of producing limit-catches from the surrounding deep water reefs.

For some people, the sight of a majestic bald eagle, with sunlight shining off its white head and tail as it banks into the wind, or a northern harrier suddenly swooping toward the ground with outstretched talons, is the stuff dreams are made of. Others spend their time walking in the woods

Grabbing grub with Nunn: The Pasta House in Kinde Scott Nunn

‘Uncomfortably stuffed on comfort food’ was the first thought that crossed my mind after I “finished” eating the main course of my lunch Thursday. I use finished loosely, since I only managed to put away about half of the food my eyes had ordered for me.

Since joining the Tribune approximately 18 months ago, I have been wanting to visit The Pasta House in Kinde, but the opportunity continued to elude me, and then the pandemic set in.

So, when it was time to kick off a series focused on food, and the bill was frankly being footed out of my editor’s budget, of course I was going to make

The Pasta House one of my first stops.

Owner Kevin Wiley recently told me how busy The Pasta House has been with takeout businesses thanks to the support it receives from the community, so I made sure to time my lunch trip accordingly and walked through the door shortly after the business opened at 11 a.m. that particular day.

Specials for the day were the cheesesteak hoagie featuring either steak or chicken, and while I am a sucker for a good cheesesteak, there was no way I waiting 18 months to eat a sandwich at a pasta place.

Continued from pg. 69 Staring down at the double-sided menu it was easy to see the restaurant offered something for just about everyone. From “Italian Teasers, House Specialties, Traditional Pastas and Pizzas” to “Specialty Subs, Signature Burgers, and Sandwiches & Wraps” there wasn’t a shortage of items to choose from. However, my eyes instantly went to the pasta section and most specifically the made from scratch mushroom Marsala sauce.

Now, some might snub their nose to the fungus among us, but I am a fresh mushroom fan and nothing tops a pasta dish quite like a creamy, rich sauce with subtle hints of Marsala wine. Deciding on my sauce was easy, but I had some difficulty choosing the perfect pasta to go with it. Luckily, my waitress Virginia, who has worked at The Pasta House for nearly a quarter decade, suggested the mostaccioli was the best for my sauce selection.

While I could have saved Eric Young a few bucks by ordering the half plate of pasta, I decided I would swing for the fences by getting the full plate, which came with my choice of a side and fresh baked bread.

Temperatures outside were approaching 70 degrees, so a nice salad sounded like the best choice, and I was pleased to find out The Pasta House offers a house-made vinaigrette.

Less than two minutes after ordering my lunch, Virginia returned with my salad, the red wine vinaigrette and a basket with some fresh sliced bread. The dressing was a perfect pair for mixed green leaf lettuce salad it was served with.

The salad was light, crisp, accompanied by some sliced cherry tomatoes, cucumber and croutons, all of which were brought to life by the tangy vinaigrette dressing.

After finishing my salad, I happily kept back a small reserve of the vinaigrette to use with the crusty bread I was served. The timing of my order couldn’t have been better because I caught some fresh bread as it came out of the oven, and after spreading it lightly with some butter, I found, just as I suspected, the vinaigrette also paired well with the bread.

It was about this time that I was able to hail Wiley from the kitchen so I could hit him with a small list of questions. As Wiley

sat down, and Virginia dropped off my pasta dish, I asked Wiley what the most popular lunch item was at the restaurant.

With a nod in my direction, he laughed and said the most popular lunch is the chicken Alfredo or seafood sacchettini.

“I don’t know why,” Wiley said.

Wiley said the pasta dishes were more of a dinner item, but he has a lot of customers that come in, get it for lunch, and take the leftovers home for dinner.

When he said that, I looked down at my plate and thought he was crazy if he thought I would leave anything behind to become dinner later.

From the outside of the

building, and first glance when you walk through the door, you would never know the true size of The Pasta House. However, in its 25th year, the business has gone through a lot of expansion over the years, and while the restaurant occupies one storefront in downtown Kinde, the two attached storefronts serve as a banquet hall and rooms for private parties.

Wiley speaks highly of his town, and had a lot of pride when he recapped some of the decisions that have led him to where he and his family are today.

After hearing the meal of the day, I started to question my decision to dine for lunch rather than dinner.

Later in the day, Wiley said the restaurant was offering a $25 deal on a full slab of barbecue ribs, two sides and an appetizer.

Wiley said while the $25 deal was born out of the restaurant’s 25th year in business, he and his wife have discussed the possibility of keeping it around for the long haul depending on its popularity.

As our conversation wrapped, I found myself second-guessing my decision to order the full

plate of pasta, and after a short tour of the buildings at The Pasta House, I decided my eyes were indeed larger than my stomach that day.

Eagle Bay Public Access is two miles east of Port Austin on Pointe aux Barques Road and has picnicking facilities.

Harbor Beach Public Bathing Beach is an active public beach in downtown Harbor Beach. It is staffed with lifeguards from mid-June through Labor Day. It features a picnic and playground area. Picnic tables and grills are located in the shaded portion of the park. There are two sand volleyball courts and a restroom building.

Jenks Park is a moderately active public beach located four miles southwest of Port Austin on M-25. Pit toilets, running water, hand pump and picnicking facilities are available. Day use only, no camping.

Lighthouse County Park is located nine miles east of Port Austin on M-25. There isn’t a bathing beach, but there is secluded sunbathing in the park. Featured are a lighthouse, museum, shelters, running water and picnicking facilities.

McGraw Park is a moderately active, public beach located seven miles southwest of Port Austin on M-25. It has a day-use area, offers swimming, hiking trails, fishing, playground, flush toilets, running water and picnicking.

Philp Park is a small, secluded beach and roadside park located five miles northeast of Caseville on M-25. It has picnicking facilities and swimming.

Port Crescent State Park is located five miles southwest of Port Austin on M-25 and is a large, active public beach. The beach at the campgrounds is for campers only.

The day-use beach is located seven miles southwest of Port Austin. A vehicle permit is required to get into the beach which has a boardwalk, bathhouse, running water, shelter and picnicking facilities.

Sleeper State Park is located five miles northeast of Caseville on M-25. The shoreline features a half mile of Lake Huron beach, including an inland area with nature trails. A campground is located across M-25 from the beach area and features a pedestrian overpass. Entrance to the park requires a motor vehicle permit. The day-use area is open 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Beach area has bathhouse, picnic shelter, running water and picnicking facilities.

Thompson Scenic Outlook is a small secluded beach and roadside park located five miles northeast of Caseville on M-25. It has picnicking facilities.

Wagener County Park is located five miles south of Harbor Beach on M-25. A small, secluded beach is at the east end of the park. It has shower and rest room facilities.

The park has launch facilities, a picnic area, playground and a wooded hiking trail. Pets are allowed
