LETTER FROM THE MAYOR DEAR GUESTS, Welcome to Highland and the Highland Arts Council’s 17th Annual Art in the Park. We are excited for the return of the Art in the Park to show off the City of Highland as an art mecca of the area. It takes many volunteer hours to make this event possible, and Lindendale Park is the perfect location for it. The Highland City Council supports Art in the Park as a Benefactor sponsor. A special thank-you goes to each Council member and to other major sponsors: Hearst Publishing, Highland News Leader, Belleville News Democrat, Edward Jones Investments/Matt Armentrout, Edward Jones Investments/Kevin Dewaele, and Edward Jones Investments/DeAnna Domagalski. They have truly invested in our city. Highland’s schedule holds many art-filled events through the Art Affair, Hard Road Theatre Productions, the Street Art Festival (sponsored by Highland Chamber of Commerce), Heartland Community Chorus, the Municipal Band concerts, Art of Soul Workshops and Youth Arts Expo (both sponsored by Highland Arts Council). Highland Arts Council has also donated art to the City for viewing by the community and its visitors. Check out their Art Walk through Highland. One exciting new announcement for the Highland Arts Council is that they have received a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a mural to be placed on the west wall of the Weinheimer Building. This project will allow the entire community to have an opportunity with the artist’s direction to have an interactive experience with this mural. The Highland Arts Council continues to create a city filled with art. We hope you will support the Council and boost their vision for a beautiful city. We are honored to have Art in the Park in Highland and welcome the artists and patrons to our city. I hope you will spend some time in Highland and enjoy its hometown atmosphere. LETTER FROM THE CHAIR DEAR ART LOVERS, The Highland Arts Council celebrates the 17th Annual Art in the Park. You will be dazzled by artists featuring 11 art medium categories of original fine art. Creativity and the arts are the elixir to innovation and new life. We thank you for supporting the arts and creativity. In addition to viewing and purchasing art, entertainment will delight you throughout the weekend. Live music will grab center stage on Saturday and Sunday. A display of art produced by students in local schools will amaze you, and artists will be demonstrating their skills so that you learn about the intricacies of specific mediums. An interactive project will be available for all attendees to express themselves. Your participation in the unity project will help the Highland Arts Council complete its mission. Two special areas of Art in the Park will thrill the kids. “Kids Kreation” will give kids a chance to express their artistic abilities either creating onsite or taking a bag of supplies to work on at home. Thanks to Paulette Todd and Kids Art Club for designing the projects and organizing the area. Wal-Mart generously donated supplies and the Highland Optimists sponsored the area. The Art Gallery…. Just for Kids will allow children ages 5 to 18 to buy art donated by the exhibiting artists for $5. It’s an excellent way to teach children the value of viewing and purchasing art. All of this, plus fantastic food and art displays make this an event that shouldn’t be missed. HISTORY OF ART IN THE PARK

The Highland Arts Council (HAC) was developed in 2003 to actively promote the arts in and around the community of Highland, through a showcase for local artists and educational opportunities for members of the community to be exposed to the arts. HAC and Art in the Park are governed and organized by dedicated volunteers. The major project is Art in the Park, an annual (2004 – 2021) fine arts event featuring fifty (50) to seventy (70) professional artists. The artistic categories include sculpture, mixed media, wood, fabric and fiber, painting, glass, clay, jewelry, photography, drawing/pastels, and graphics/print making. The two-day indoor and outdoor exhibition and preview party every October brings 9,000 art enthusiasts to the show and awards up to $9,000 in prizes to the exhibiting artists. There is no attendance fee and free parking for attendees. The team is always looking for ways to show creativity and the arts in unique ways. Culinary Arts was used several years by offering Dueling Desserts and Pancake Dan to entertain the attendees. They saw what extremes can be achieved using the medium of food rather than traditional art products. Four of the dance studios in Highland joined forces to present a 3-minute “flash mob” of dancers at Art in the Park in 2016. It exposed visitors to another aspect of the arts and brought in the families of the dancers to view the visual arts in the exhibition. Local musicians will keep your toes tapping by listening to the live music of the SIUE Jazz Band and Jazz Combo, Heartland Community Chorus, the students of Highland Music School, and The Funk Ward. The local talent is amazing and should be appreciated by all 8

who attend. Youth are enticed to buy art at the Art Gallery…Just for Kids where children from 5 – 18 choose art donated by the exhibiting artists. Children choose without the influence of parents or guardians. Youth may also create their own art within the Kids Kreation area also presented at Art in the Park. While art lovers are in Highland, they will be astounded by the murals and donated art featured on the Art Walk. This self-guided tour will give you a great view of the dedication of Highland City Council to the arts. The most recent addition is the mural due to be completed during Art in the Park on the west wall of the Weinheimer Community Center on the corner of 9th and Pine Streets. Robert Fishbone, a well-known muralist from St. Louis will be painting the mural made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Highland Arts Council’s mission is to create a forum for people who share a love and interest in the ARTS; to promote local appreciation for the ARTS through community events that create enthusiasm and add cultural value; to provide a venue for the appreciation and exposure of local visual, literary, and performing artists; to encourage community access to professional visual, literary, and performing artists and a variety of arts forms, music, dance, literature, and theater; to foster and promote community youth involvement in the Arts, whether visual, written, or performing. All people and businesses are welcome to become members and help in our mission. Come! 12-1: THE FUNK WARD The Funk Ward was formed in 2019. Founders Jeff Ward & Dr. Jose Diaz had a concept to create a group based on their admiration for funky, instrumental and jam-inspired tunes. They could be classified as a funk/groove/ jam band with a hint of jazz and soul. Their mission is to inject a cover band that brings something new to the Metro East & Southern IL Regions. We aim to play tunes that make the audience want to jump to their feet and dance, even if they’re not familiar with the song. COMMUNITY CHORUS ENSEMBLES, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR LUANNE MURPHY The Heartland Community Chorus is a performing ensemble for singers in the Southern Illinois area, based in Highland but also representing the surrounding communities of Troy, Trenton, Greenville, Breese, Columbia, St. Jacob, Edwardsville, St. Rose and Pocahontas. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Luanne Murphy, Heartland Community Chorus is beginning its ninth concert season. Its mission is to promote and preserve the tradition of choral music for the cultural enrichment of the Metro East Region. They rehearse every Monday at 6:30 pm at the St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose, Illinois. The season traditionally includes 3 concerts

performing a variety of choral music. However, with the changes of events because of COVID, they have also produced virtual performances. Tickets may be purchased for individual concerts or for the entire season. A nine-member Board of Directors oversees day to day operations and includes members of the Chorus and the community. Heartland Community Chorus appreciates its support from the Highland Arts Council, Highland Area Community Foundation and numerous Highland area businesses and individuals. ARTS IN ACTION: YOUTH ARTS EXPO The Highland Arts Council is seeking young artists to participate in Youth Arts Expo on November 13, 2021 at the Highland Masonic Lodge. Visual artists, musicians, vocalists, dancers, actors and writers in grades 6-12 are encouraged to apply to be a part of this exciting event. All applicants will be featured! The Highland Arts Council is excited to be hosting talented young artists of the region in the fourth annual Arts in Action: Youth Arts Exposition. The exposition will give young artists an opportunity to showcase their emerging talents with the public from 11:30 am-1:00 pm. All are encouraged to attend this free event in support of the young artists. The Highland Arts Council hopes to advance the youth of the community through their support, knowing that these young artists will one day be leaders in fostering the appreciation of the arts in the region. We encourage parents, grandparents, friends, and general public to come to the Youth Arts Expo on November 13, 2021 at the Highland Masonic Lodge, 721 9th Street, Highland, Illinois from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm to encourage future artists. 14

DEMONSTRATIONS & WORKSHOPS ART OF SOUL WORKSHOPS

For seven years, the Highland Arts Council has presented Art of Soul, a 5-week workshop series for artists and non-artists to experiment freely with various mediums. Local and national artists share their expertise as teacher for two hours every Thursday evening. Through the years, we have experimented with watercolors, acrylic painting, origami, polymer clay, felting, screen printing, ceramic clay, drawing, pastels, sculpting with fabric, macrame, calligraphy and more. All materials are supplied. The workshop time is a true multi-generational experience with attendees from 13 - 85 years of age meeting in the Highland Evangelical United Church of Christ social hall. All workshops for one small price of $35. Check HighlandArtsCouncil.org for photos of the seven years of classes and to register for 2022 workshops on February 17, 24, March 3, 10, 17. Classes will be smaller than previous years, but the creativity will be as exciting as always.

A nine-member Board of Directors oversees day to day operations and includes members of the Chorus and the community. DEMONSTRATIONS & WORKSHOPS HARD ROAD THEATRE PRODUCTIONS

Founded in 2001, Hard Road Theatre Productions is a non-profit theatre company committed to providing Highland and the surrounding area with high-quality, affordable, live theatre productions. The usual performance season includes three or four productions that include all ages. They have also helped to improve the performance spaces at the local schools. MURAL ADDED TO HIGHLAND ART WALK HIGHLAND

The Highland Arts Council is proud of its Art Walk and the ways in which art has enhanced our city. Currently, a brochure will take you on a self-guided tour of artwork that has been commissioned or donated by the Highland Arts Council, the Highland Garden Club, the Highland Community School, grants from the Highland Area Community Foundations, the Highland Chamber of Commerce, and specific individuals. We plan to expand the Art Walk and build Highland’s reputation to be the Arts Mecca of the Metro East as a Mural City. The National Endowment

for the Arts has granted the Highland Arts Council a matching grant of $10,000. This is the second time that the NEA has shown confidence in HAC and its mission to bring art to the community. We are honored and thrilled. This grant will help bring renowned artists from St. Louis, Robert Fishbone and his daughter Liza, to paint a mural on the west wall of the Weinheimer Community Center. He began the project in early 2021 and the hope is to have it completed for you to view on your trip to see the artists at Art in the Park. We know that the Weinheimer Community Center was built to bring our community together, and it has done that since 1949 through the generosity of forward thinkers within the city. Help us honor the building and memories

made there and deepen its value through art on its wall. The HAC is extending an invitation to citizens, businesses and organizations from the community who see the value in creating beauty in our city. We encourage you to partner with us to develop a mural that will bring people into our community and expand the local economy. Donors for the matching grant share ownership of Highland’s newest community art. There is still room to buy a brick to be placed under the completed artwork. Stop by the hospitality booth at Art in the Park to pick up a form and a map of the other art locations in Highland. Why not stay over and take it all in…Art in the Park and the Art Walk. Maps will be available at the hospitality booth.

ABBEY HEPNER - SIUE ASST. PROF. OF ART & DESIGN - HEAD OF PHOTOGRAPHY Abbey Hepner is an artist and educator interested in health, technology, and the environment. She received degrees in Studio Art and Psychology from the University of Utah and her MFA in Photography from the University of New Mexico. Her work has been exhibited widely in such venues as the Mt. Rokko International Photography Festival (Kobe, Japan), SITE Santa Fe, the University of Buffalo Art Galleries, Noorderlicht Photofestival (Groningen, Netherlands), and Sheldon Art Galleries. Her work has been recently highlighted in Hyperallergic, Lenscratch, Ars Technica, and Fraction Magazine. Her monograph, The Light at the End of History, was published by Daylight Books in 2021. Hepner serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Photographic Education and currently teaches at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as Assistant Professor of Art and Area Head of Photography.

ANGELA HUNG- LEWIS & CLARK COMMUNITY COLLEGE ASSOC. PROF. OF ART/ GALLERY DIRECTOR Angela Hung took her bachelor degree from York University, Toronto, Canada in 1999 and achieved her Master degree in Fine Art from Fontbonne University in 2001. She attended Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville in the following year for postgraduate studies. Angela has taught at several art schools in Toronto, Canada, St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley, MO. and Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL. She began her teaching duties at Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) in Godfrey, Illinois, in 2007, and is currently the Program Coordinator and Gallery Director at LCCC. Hung has exhibited her work regionally and internationally. Her works were published in several 500 series books by Lark Book including “500 Cups”, “500 Earrings”, “500 Metal Vessels” and “500 Ceramics Sculpture”, “Ceramic Sculpture” and “Korean Metal Art Techniques through the History” in 2019 by Schiffer Publishing.

JOHN TROY - LINDENWOOD UNIVERSITY SENIOR PROFESSOR ART & DESIGN John Troy received his BFA in Painting and Graphic Communication from Washington University in St. Louis and his MFA in Painting from the Tyler School of Art of Temple University in Philadelphia. He worked for six years as Assistant Dean at Tyler while exhibiting his paintings and drawings regularly on the east coast through representation by the Charles More Gallery of Philadelphia. He worked as a commercial illustrator in Philadelphia and St. Louis for publishing houses, ad agencies, and major corporations such as Anhueser-Busch, Monsanto, and McDonnel-Douglas. He produced a line of greeting cards (Hairline Cards) for Cloud Nine Productions and a line of rubber stamp designs for That’s All She Stamped. As an adjunct professor, he taught Drawing, Figure Drawing, Design, and Art Appreciation at the St. Louis Community College at Meramec for eight years. He has worked full time as a commissioned portrait painter. Since 2002, he has taught Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Art History at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, where he currently holds the rank of Senior Professor of Art and Design. As a Journeyman Scenic Artist, he paints stage sets for the MUNY theatre in St. Louis during the summer season. Troy’s latest artwork can be seen at johntroypainter.com.

Patricia Baldwin, an artist from Dixon, Illinois, demonstrated alcohol inks on glazed tiles at Art in the Park in Highland, Illinois. Her subjects were icons for Highland residents…the fountain at the Square, the clock tower on City Hall, and the Louis Latzer Memorial Library. Instead of placing the tiles in a location to share with the residents, the Highland Arts Council created notecards to share her art. Share this beautiful community’s landmarks with others. Paulette Todd, artist and teacher at HAC’s Art of Soul, created notecards of her pastel, acrylic and watercolor paintings as another fundraiser for Highland Arts Council. Eight cards and envelopes in various subjects, such as birds, florals, and more. Paulette has a commercial art degree and over 30 years of experience including 19 years as the owner of Kids Art Club in Highland. Lynnette Schuepbach, artist and chair of Art in the Park, created these cards from the original watercolor illustrations from her first children’s book. These whimsical frogs will make the recipients smile even before reading your message inside. The blank inside allows you to send your personalized message. Lynnette has served as president of Highland Arts Council for several years. Your purchase of the cards will help Highland Arts Council continue its mission of encouraging the arts in Highland and the surrounding area.
