Alter Attitudes About Aging & Embrace Your Age!

By Trena Winans, Senior Services Education & Community Outreach Director Our culture seems to surround us constantly with anti-aging messages.

I can’t even begin to count the number of products, programs and treatments I have seen trying to sell a new version of a youth elixir.

Perhaps it is time to ask ourselves why we should want anything that tells us we are not ok as we are— today?

Have you ever found yourself grumbling about the “old” driver in front of you? Despaired about an upcoming birth-day or a new wrinkle on your face? Look around, and you will see negative stereotypes about aging all around us, and if we are honest with ourselves, most of us can observe numerous negative thoughts and beliefs about age within ourselves as well.

Ageism is arguably more prevalent and accepted than any other modern bias. The reality is that negative beliefs about aging have a very real impact on health, longevity, employment and quality of life, and it affects us all. Unless we are aspiring to die young, age will impact every person across all boundaries of race, color, nationality, creed and sexual orientation. The

The Scope of the Problem Next time you watch TV, make note of how many commercials advertise anti-aging products.

Trusted personalities such as Oprah reinforce the message that we must fight age. When older adults are

featured in articles and stories it is usually for either surpassing the 100-year mark, or for taking part in “extreme” activities associated with the young. Must we all skydive when we are 90 to be seen as aging well?

Perhaps some of the most disturbing stereotypes emerge in the relative anonymity of the internet. A recent study by researchers at Yale University found 84 publicly accessible non-commercial groups on FaceBook that came up in a search for 75 words including “old,” “aged,” “elderly,” “retired,” “experienced,” “senile”

Most of us can probably think of numerous times when we have heard, said, or thought about aging in a negative light. Some of it is couched as jokes: the “Over the Hill” birthday party themes, themed gift boxes in the shape of a coffin, or laughing at “senior moments.”

Sometimes it is wistful: despairing about “feeling old,” searching for wrinkle remedies, or bemoaning changed physical capabilities.

Other times, it may be couched as a compliment, but is really condescending or infantilizing— describing older adults as “cute,” marveling that they can “still” do certain things, or speaking with them as one would with a child.

Negative beliefs about age begin in childhood and are reinforced throughout our lives. By the time we reach the peak 1/3 of our lives, most of us have internalized these attitudes deeply. We see examples of it all the time. Regardless of age, many people like to tell themselves

they are “not old enough” to take part in “senior” activities, or to access supports that could alleviate stress and help them more comfortably age in place. What age is “old” anyway?

Studies show it depends on the age you are when you are asked. If you are under 65, old age begins at 65, but if you are over 65 it jumps to 80, and so on.

Ramifications of All That Negativity Ageist thoughts have serious consequences. It is not just a matter of political correctness, but a matter of potential income and health loss, and even a shorter lifespan.

In the last few years alone, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received over 38,000 age discrimination complaints but has found age discrimination very difficult to prove. Only about 1/7 of age-related cases are settled to the benefit of the older adult making the complaint.

Worse, it appears that when people hold negative beliefs about aging, it has a direct impact on their own health and longevity. Studies by Professor Becca Levy at Yale give some hard numbers to the cost of such beliefs. One study found that older adults with positive perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years

longer than those with a negative view. In another, people who held positive beliefs about age were 44% more likely to recover from physical disabilities than those holding negative stereotypes about old people.

Turning it Around Let’s start by recognizing that when it comes to aging, everybody’s doing it! There is much to celebrate about the wisdom and perspective of age.

Some of the positives are indicated in new research showing that as we get older we use more of our brains, helping us see general patterns more clearly than younger counterparts.

Age can also enhance our ability to find the essential meaning in situations and stories. The older brain spreads memories across a wider range of brain structures than the young. As a result, it may take longer to pull up information, but the result is a better ability to see the big picture. Dr Bill Thomas, a national leader in changing age perceptions, proposes replacing the concept of “Senior Moment” with “Mind Expansion Moment.”

Never Too Old to Travel Abroad

By Tom Lowrey, Education Assistant Do you sometimes wish you could travel abroad, but then find yourself nixing the idea because of perceived barriers due to your age? Think again! There may be more travel in your future. Here’s some advice from a local travel expert: Sue Montesi has been a frequent visitor to our Trailside Activity & Dining Center, and has become a favorite Lunchtime Learners presenter. With her beautiful slides and captivating commentary, she has taken us to the cities of Italy and the continents of Africa and Australia.

To date, she has visited 70 countries, with Iceland being the most recent.

On quite a few of her travels, she has been the organizer and leader of

a tour group. “Most of my international travelers are age 50 and above,” says Sue. Who better, then, to give advice regarding the topic of Traveling While Senior? Here is some of Sue’s advice: • If you don’t have a history of international traveling, travel with someone or sign up with a group for international travel.

• Wear a cloth wallet (not leather as it will cause you to sweat) with a neck cord under your shirt or blouse.

Your neck wallet always has your passport, your credit card(s) and ATM card, and your cash, as these are the things you must protect from pickpockets.

• Use a small backpack for your

water bottle, sweater, protein bar or other snack, small packet of tissues, etc. This keeps your hands free.

• Purchase a piece of carry-on luggage with spinner wheels as it will stay upright and its upright handle will be about waist level to assist you with your walking. And it’s easier to maneuver in airport bathroom stalls!

• Throughout the trip, including in airports, only wear comfortable walking shoes with rubber soles.

• If traveling alone or if you have difficulty walking distances in large airports, request a wheelchair from the airline. If the time interval is somewhat short (two hours or less as flights don’t always keep their

scheduled times, it can take time to deplane if your seat is at the rear, etc.) between flights in a large airport, request a wheelchair as you may not be able to walk fast to the gate of the next flight.

Sue also recommends carrying (not packing in your checked luggage) a sufficient supply of medications, no longer using Traveler Checks but having at least one credit card with a chip, and if you have a cell phone and will be traveling internationally that you check with your cell phone provider to see if your cell phone plan includes international calls, etc.

The nonprofit, TED, standing for Technology, Entertainment, Design, offers knowledge and inspiration in the form of free online videos.

These talks give access to the world’s most inspiring voices, discussing a vast range of themes.

who need a low impact, fun way to exercise. Linda Strohpaul and Geraldine Larson are sisters who bring their mom, Donna Jacobs, to class three days a week. They have been attending the Aquatic Arthritis class for nearly five years. Donna, who recently turned 93-years-old, says, “I like the people. It keeps me moving and gets me out of the house.” Donna truly commits to her exercise each week. She has made these classes a priority and it serves as an example to all of us.

As their Senior Capstone Project, the students helped the seniors by doing lawn care and other various outside work. “As we looked at our big yard after the winter winds, we were faced with a LOT of work that could have been overwhelming.

But, after 5 students spent 2 hours (10 hours total), the yard looked totally different and is making our spring work load much more manageable. It was more than just the physical work they did, but also their

Coping With Age-Related Hair Loss Attitude goes a long way in regard to self-esteem. With a positive spin, it’s possible to get through difficult situations and even have a favorable outlook on getting older. But even the most optimistic among us may at times worry about the physical signs of aging and wonder what can be done to make them feel and look their best.

Learn How to Sleep Like a Child Again Many adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.

The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep

per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable.

People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine.

Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts.

Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal,

director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function.

Various strategies can help people get more sleep and enjoy better sleep quality. · Create a luxury bed environment. Splurge on the largest mattress you can afford and one that is comfortable for both parties (if married/coupled). A roomy bed routinely invites sleep. If you have a restless partner, try two separate beds pushed against each other. · Consider white noise. The sounds of the house or outdoors may be keeping you up. Many people find

that the gentle hum of a fan or a white-noise machine with a calming sound effect makes it easier for them to dose off than complete quiet.

It can also block out extraneous noises. · Keep electronics out of the bedroom. It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep. Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep. · See your doctor. If medications or illnesses are keeping you up, a change in regimen may provide the relief you need.
